Le Grand Jazz Session

Image
Michel Legrand Featuring Miles Davis -  Legrand Jazz [IMP 6028 USA 2017 24-Bit 176.4kHz FLAC] Originally released on Columbia Records in 1958. French composer, arranger and pianist Michel Legrand assembled thirty-one American jazz greats over three recording sessions in late June 1958 for his own big band arrangements of eleven jazz standards. The list of the assembled talent is impressive, and likely the greatest ever for one project; Miles Davis (a headline act who appears on three tracks), John Coltrane, Paul Chambers, Teo Macero, Herbie Mann, Bill Evans, Bill Webster, Art Farmer & Donald Byrd are amongst those who play their parts. This release originated from a two-track all-analogue mix down from the original studio session work prints and cut by Chris Bellman on Bernie Grundman's all-tube lathe. Street Treats

Donald Byrd - Street Lady [MOVLP3396 NLD 2023 24-Bit 176.4kHz FLAC] Originally released on Blue Note Records in 1973. Dutch reissue label Music On Vinyl have completed an amazing job on this brand new reissue of Donald Byrd's funky-soul-jazz album Street Lady . Whilst the label don't make a habit of revealing their lineage & mastering information on releases, this pressing does show the benefits of having your own pressing plant and managing quality control throughout.... this record sounds fantastic and it is pressed really rather well. The vinyl is so quiet, I would put it up there with QRP pressings. This album is really well recorded, it is super funky and if like me, you have a have a love for organic grooves laden with flute, trumpets, arp synths and Fender Rhodes, it will make your Saturday. Enjoy. A1 Lansana's Priestess A2 Miss Kane A3 Sister Love B1 Street Lady B2 Witch Hunt B3 Woman Of The World

Chant Number One

Donald Byrd - Chant [LT-991 USA 2019 24-Bit 176.4kHz FLAC] Not breaking with current tradition, this Sunday night's jazz slot is taken by another classic album, reissued and now out-of-print by Blue Note as part of their Tone Poet Series. I usually prefer for the music to speak for itself on Sunday nights ....so all you need to know is that this album was recorded with Rudy Van Gelder in 1961, however it sat in the Blue Note vaults released until 1979. Accompanying the Byrd trumpet are Pepper Adams on saxophone, Herbie Hancock on piano, Teddy Robinson on drums and Doug Watkins on double bass. This recent pressing was mastered from that very same original master tape at Cohearant by Kevin Gray and pressed at RTI. It comes wrapped in a high quality tip-on gatefold jacket by Stoughton Press.  Have a great Sunday evening everybody. A1 I'm An Old Cowhand A2 You're Next A3 Chant B1 That's All B2 Great God B3 Sophisticated Lady

Byrd In Mono

Donald Byrd - Byrd In Paris [SR10/1 FRA 2021 Mono 24-Bit 176.4kHz FLAC] Originally released on the Brunswick label in 1958, in France & Germany. I mentioned a few weeks back about the growing number of European (& Russian) labels releasing poor quality unlicensed jazz records, using compact disc (or worse) sources. Sam Records is not one of those labels. Fred Thomas runs Sam Records as a one-man-band, out of Paris, focusing on exceptional quality remasters from original tapes, pressed onto good quality vinyl. The label specialises in repressing releases from old French labels from the fifties and sixties, such as Brunswick, Barclay and Philips, most of which never saw release outside Europe. Back in those days, many American musicians hot footed to France, releasing a plethora of products only for the French and European markets. I have acquired a couple of his releases, here is one from trumpet legend Donald Byrd repressed from the original mono recording. I don't poss...

Analogue Master

Donald Byrd - Places And Spaces [BN-LA549-G USA 2021 24-Bit FLAC] Over the last few years, those nice folks at Blue Note have contracted Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio to master new quality vinyl pressings of key legacy releases from their back catalogue using the original analogue reels. The results are spectacular..... Originally released in 1975, Places And Spaces was an album of disco-soul and punchy neo-funk from jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd which spawned classics such as  Change (Makes You Want To Hustle) and his most famous single,  Dominoes .  A1 Change (Makes You Want To Hustle) A2 Wind Parade A3 Dominoes B1 Places And Spaces B2 You And The Music B3 Night Whistler B4 Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)
