Le Grand Jazz Session

Michel Legrand Featuring Miles Davis -  Legrand Jazz [IMP 6028 USA 2017 24-Bit 176.4kHz FLAC] Originally released on Columbia Records in 1958. French composer, arranger and pianist Michel Legrand assembled thirty-one American jazz greats over three recording sessions in late June 1958 for his own big band arrangements of eleven jazz standards. The list of the assembled talent is impressive, and likely the greatest ever for one project; Miles Davis (a headline act who appears on three tracks), John Coltrane, Paul Chambers, Teo Macero, Herbie Mann, Bill Evans, Bill Webster, Art Farmer & Donald Byrd are amongst those who play their parts. This release originated from a two-track all-analogue mix down from the original studio session work prints and cut by Chris Bellman on Bernie Grundman's all-tube lathe.   Bill Evans & Jim Hall - Undercurrent [MOFI 1-031 USA 2014 24-Bit 176.4kHz FLAC] Originally released on United Artists Records in 1962, this Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab Silver Label Series release is cut all-analogue from a copy of the original master tape by Krieg Wunderlich. Today's Sunday jazz selection represents the genre in its most stripped back format - music for guitar and piano only, performed by two virtuoso musicians, recorded & produced by Alan Douglas at Sound Makers Studios in New York on April 24th & May 14th 1962. I'm away now for a bit, so the next post from me will be around mid-August. A1 My Funny Valentine A2 I Hear A Rhapsody A3 Dream Gypsy B1 Romain B2 Skating In Central Park B3 Darn That Dream In complete contrast, Digitalia readers also get something a little more lively today.

Fifty-Nine Forever

Bill Evans - Trio 64 [V6-8578 USA 2021 24-Bit 176.4kHz FLAC] A couple of weeks back, I featured the Trio 65 album from a slightly different Bill Evans Trio, and promised this one before Christmas. It could have been around the same time but I felt that it was a little too early in the year to feature an album which featured an interpretation of  Santa Claus Is Coming To Town. Originally recorded in New York on December 18th 1963, that's 59 years ago today, this gorgeously packaged remastered version was cut from the original analogue tape by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound, pressed at Quality Record Pressings and released as part of the Verve/Acoustic Sounds Series. A1 Little Lulu A2 A Sleeping Bee A3 Always A4 Santa Claus Is Coming To Town B1 I'll See You Again B2 For Heaven's Sake B3 Dancing In The Dark B4 Everything Happens To Me

Negroni Trio

Bill Evans Trio - Trio '65 [V6-8613 USA 2022 24-Bit 176.4kHz FLAC] In a former life, I traveled the world for work - nothing glamorous, just living out of a suitcase, day to day, hotel to hotel. This album and it's earlier Trio '64  (coming here nearer Christmas) were the soundtracks to many a hotel lobby bar, when after that second (or maybe it was a third) negroni, the day would be washed away in a haze of cold alcohol and smooth piano jazz.  Twenty years on from that life on the road, Acoustic Sounds have reissued both albums as they were intended to sound, cut from the original master three track master tape by Ryan K. Smith and pressed carefully at Quality Record Pressings as part of the label's Verve reissue series. Time to get that barman to mix another negroni.... A1 Israel A2 Elsa A3 'Round Midnight A4 Our Love Is Here To Stay B1 How My Heart Sings B2 Who Can I Turn To? B3 Come Rain Or Come Shine B4 If You Could See Me Now

Believe In Bill

Bill Evans - You Must Believe In Spring [CR00455 USA 2022 24-Bit 176.4kHz FLAC] Jazz piano legend Bill Evan's final recording session at Capitol Studio in the summer of 1977 was released after his death by Warners in 1981. Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio cut this new double 45rpm pressing for Craft Recordings direct from the original analogue master tape. These seven gorgeous instrumental pieces, dedicated to his late partner & his brother, who both took their own lives, is enhanced by the superb original recording on two 45rpm platters, pressed by Record Technology Incorporated in Camarillo. I've traveled for work all around the world, and whilst there is an air of expensive hotel lobby music to this album, this also makes this the perfect record for any chilled Sunday morning. A1 B Minor Waltz (For Ellaine) A2 You Must Believe In Spring B1 Gary's Theme B2 We Will Meet Again (For Harry) C1 The Peacocks C2 Sometime Ago D1 Theme From M*A*S*H (Aka Suicide I...

Big Band In Widescreen

George Russell And His Orchestra - New York, N.Y. [DL 79216 USA 2021 24-Bit 176.4kHz FLAC] Originally released on Decca Records in 1959, drummer George Russell's homage to New York featured a whole host of jazz talent, including Benny Golson and John Coltrane on sax, Bill Evans on piano and Art Farmer on trumpet. The mighty Jon Hendricks provides the narration and if latin percussion is your thing, then Al Epstein's bongos on  Manhatta-Rico will be a joy to behold. Remastered from the original tapes by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound, this unusual big band jazz album was pressed at Quality Record Pressings as part of Analogue Productions' Acoustic Sound Series and it is wrapped in a high gloss, tip-on heavy card jacket.  Time for some extra widescreen big band entertainment. A1 Manhattan A2 Big City Blues B1 Manhatta-Rico B2   East Side Medley - Autumn In New York - How About You B3 A Helluva Town
