We Got a Halloween Card!

Well, it arrived yesterday (?) but The Big Thing was kinna busy (he has 3 day old newsiepapers sittin around unread), so he dint look throuh our mail til late to night. We gotta Halloween card from Skeezix, Mao, Rocky, an Trip!

We sure wish we had thought of that. The Big Thing gets holiday cards sometimes, but we almos nefer do. That was so excitin! Almost like a bag of treats!

The Big Thing put it down onna floor so we can look at it alla time...

We've been wantin to make cards of our own. The Big Thing figured out a way to make one, but it involved complicated ways of rotatin images around in Word an was kinna clunky.

Well, guess what? We were sortin through old CDs that came with the old computers, an we discovered a Greeting Card Maker! We havent looked at it yet (we're busy gettin ready for our Gotcha Day Party), but we're gonna look at it careful next week a see if it still works. Wouldn't that be cool!

An we did somethin else recently about sendin cards. We gotta card from Skeezix earlier, an the stamp was HIS PICTURE! So we found where that could be done. An we gots stamps wif his picture on it too! Jus kidding, we gots stamps wif OUR picture on it!

We used one to send printouts of our bloggie to The Big Thing's Mom an Dad. We are gonna save the others for sendin to kitty friends. Wow!

LC's Gotcha Day Story

(From The Big Thing's Cat Diary, 1993)

LC came to me on Halloween 1993. I decided that the reason Tinkerbelle and Skeeter didn't play together was because of Tinker's age and solitary habits. I took a chance and decided to get a playmate for Skeeter since he was still young. Going back to the same pet store where I got Skeeter, I found two kittens in a cage: One was an utterly cute and friendly calico, while the other was aloof and tried to hide. You guessed it, I ended up with the aloof one! It took two of us to unhook her claws from the screen cage and get her into a box (the calico was already promised to another customer). LC is a “tuxedo” female. As with Skeeter, it took 2 days to get her to come near me, but she is not as oriented to me as Skeeter is. Partly, that's because she fulfilled expectations of being a playmate to Skeeter!

LC is a cat's cat! She and Skeeter hit it off at once and have become nearly inseparable. Skeeter is her "big brother". They play together constantly; he lets her bunnykick to her heart's content (she doesn't seem to hurt him very much) and she is just feisty enough to make up for his advantage in size and weight. She doesn't care to be held like Skeeter does, but she has learned that I have magic fingers that please her greatly.

Her name comes from her black/white markings. She has a strong resemblance to a dairy cow (like Elsie from Borden's). From "Elsie", came the letters "LC", which in turn stands for "Little Cow".

I had to do quite a lot for her health those first few months. Her black cowl extends below her eyes, so I didn't suspect at first that the beautiful black color inside her ears was the result of a serious ear mite infestation. It took several visits to the vet and drops/cleaning by me twice a day for weeks before that cleared up. Possibly as a result, she then developed an infection in both eyes. Her eyelids would seal shut from dried "stuff" every time she slept. I didn't notice that until I realized she was moving around uncertainly and finding her food by smell rather than sight (her black face and very dark eyes make it hard to tell when her eyes are open). The poor little thing was going around blind until I got home each evening and dabbed her eyelids clean with water each day. It took over a week of antibiotics before the problem cleared up! After that, she turned out to have worms, which meant that Tinker and Skeeter certainly had gotten them as well. I had to dose the bunch of them!

Not a good start for a pretty kitty, but she got over it all. The vet receptionist calls her "Lucky Cat" because the vet said that most people would have returned her to the pet store, which would have been the end of her!

LC is a frog-hunter, for some odd reason. She loves them as toys and as food. Skeeter will go sniff one of her frogs sometimes, but they aren’t warm-blooded and he can’t seem to see them as alive if they don’t move. LC knows, though. She loves live baitfish, too. She didn’t learn it from another cat; it’s all her own discovery!

LC has a weakness for being scratched under the chin. She’s quite affectionate as long as she is not being held, which she will not tolerate!

Skeeter's Gotcha Day Story

(From The Big Thing's Cat Diary, 1992)

Having heard of the enjoyment that some other cats have gotten from having a playmate, I decided to get a playmate for my adult cat Tinkerbelle in Fall 1992. I had in mind finding a female Siamese (my family had female Siamese cats when I was young, and I seem to get along better with female cats than males), but I ended up with an orange male kitten!

On Halloween Day, I passed a pet store I hadn't noticed previously. Upon entering, I was assailed by commotion, noise, and a multitude of workers busily engaged in renovating the entire shop. As I turned to leave, the owner told me they were quite open for business and asked what I was looking for. It turned out that the only kitten available was an orange tabby male. What a sight! The poor thing had been alone in a small cage and engulfed in dust, noise, and strange people for over a week. He clung to me and cried; my heart went out to him and I brought him home.

How purr-fect! My Halloween cat was orange and was born (as near as can be determined) on the 4th of July. It took two days before he would come anywhere near me, but by getting down on hands and knees (closer to eye level), I eventually got to scratch him on the head. Talk about a complete change! After that, I couldn't get him away from me for weeks! I learned that any approach from above panicked him, especially combined with a reaching out (and down) of hands. I concluded that he was abused by humans as a kitten and feared hands! The noise and dust from the pet shop renovation seemed to have him permanently afraid of sudden noises. It seems that, even when I buy a kitten, it has been psychologically harmed. From that rough beginning, we have become inseparable.

His name took some time to discover. I worked on his orange/white color, his Halloween adoption date and his 4th of July birthdate. I finally decided that he hung around me like a mosquito, so I named him Skeeter.

Unfortunately, Tinkerbelle did not take to Skeeter as I did. Poor little Skeeter wanted nothing more than to become friends with Tinker, but she would bat him and drive him away. He put up with that for months before he gave up trying to curl up next to her or eat out of the same food bowl. He was happiest when draped over my shoulder like a bag of sugar, purring away. While Tinker was my companion from our times of troubles, Skeeter became my favorite cat. He is so friendly and affectionate. When we are outside together, he wants to stay nearby.

Skeeter became a dedicated lap cat! If I sit down for a minute, he is there to hop up and curl up on my lap. He will even leave a heated waterbed in preference for my lap and some scratching. Sometimes his eyes roll up from the pleasure of being scratched around the head. One time, I think he actually passed out from it.

There’s a little bit of a saber-tooth cat gene in Skeeter. His upper fangs extend beyond his lower jaw! It is so cool to rub my finger along his jaw and feel the tooth points. It’s a good thing he’s not a “biter”! He has got to be the friendliest, easy-going, person-oriented cat ever. And so handsome with his symmetrical white boots and chest. Too bad he is so afraid of strangers and noise; he’d have been a non-purebred ribbon-winner at any show.

2nd 10,000th Visitor Winner

Skeeter: OK, OK LC, stop head-buttin me. I'll announce it already. Geez....

1! Its a odd number.

Cheysuli...

Ya came so close! Gretchen wins 2nd prize. Two pouches of treats!

Oh Mouse-droppings! We were entirely breathless an hadda to go lay down on sometin soft fer a few laps! When The Big Thing saw the die wasnt bouncing anymore, we both held our breafs for a few seconds while he put on his glases an bent down to see it.

We sure haven't had THAT kinna excitment is a few Big Moons!

Gretchen, ya gotta tell us where to send it. See the suggestions in the previous post to Chen an Ollie about how to send us. Or jus tell us if you arent worried.

We loved the suspense; MOL!

10,000th Visitor!!!!!!!

We don't know who it was, but that wasn't the contest... It was guessin the right day or closest full day.

The 10,000th visitor came to our bloggie at 7:39 PM EDT. We happened to notice 9,997, so we watched it carefully for a while. We are surprised at so many posts the past week, but maybe we should have expected that. For the record, our guess (a few weeks ago) was November 12th. MOL!

The only 10/29 guess was Chen&Ollie, so they win the tent an 2 pouches of treats. 2nd place is tied at Gretchin and Cheysuli. We haf decided to roll a single dice. Odd number an it is Gretchin. Even number an it is Cheysuli... That is absolutely out of our control and fair as we can figure it.

Hold on, we gotta go find a dice! Ah, a quality Backgammon die (we can trust that). The Big Thing spins the one die into the air...

It hits the hard wooden floor an bounces around... and bounces... and bounces

Its a...

We're holding of with the results fer a little bit... He, he... Oh the results are recorded an there's no changin it. It's all settled. But we want to have our fun with this. ;) Bwa-ha-ha

OUR MUTUAL GOTCHA DAY PARTY -

We mentioned the food an toys for our Nov 1st Gotcha Day Party. Today we wanna mention the sittin and loungin places, the nappin places, and the place for any nip-woozy kitties to rest a few laps. Places to sit an chat, or rest a bit, are imporant too! And, er, "facilities"...

There are comfy chairs to sit on...

And softy beds, both good fer sittin on an chattin.

The Big Thing will put a coupla folded blankie in the (dry) baftub for any woozy kitties to rest away from all the runnin aroun an noise...

We haf made sure there are lots of clean litterboxes. We "know a kitty" who deals in temporary use of them an we (well, The Big Thing - that's what he's here for) will scrub them out good before the party. We've got lotsa fresh scoopable litter stuff accumulated.

Note the privacy dividers between the litterboxes!

We've got some games to play, too, but thats for tomorrow's post...

Miss Peach Meme

Well, about eferyone has been tagged now with Adan/Michico’s Miss Peach Meme (opened to all by several kitties), so we thought we would try it.

Skeeter: The bestest things I do for The Big Thing are to sleep on his lap, sit an talk next to him when he is at the computer, sleep next to him at night, an sometimes earthworm unner the blankies when it looks like he is cold. I stay near him inna cave, an I stay very near him outside (to protekt him, of course). I wouldn’t be afraid to be outside on my own, all alone, no one near me, with woofies barkin and vishus deer maybe jus over the fence… So I stay real near to him to make sure he is safe.

An I try to lick the food bowls so clean he doesn’t hafta wash them…

LC: I like to stay close (but not too close) to The Big Thing to help him get exercise. I help him stretch out to reach me (an just barely to encourage more stretchin). I make sure he has to more around a bit to reach me. Ya know, like stayin onna floor so he bends over, sittin onna ottoman so he bends from his middle to reach me, laying just out of reach onna bed. That sort of stuff. I know he appreciates it a lot! I’d jus as soon sit onna him or right close, but he needs the exercise!

I also help him to get up an open the deck door A LOT so he keeps movin.

We both help this spreads some positive kitty-vibes to help Miss Peach get better an eat more.

10,000th Visitor Contest Update

LC:

Just wanted to post the guesses. We are at 9,751 right now.

Leavin...

SKEETER:

We haf been watchin Miss Peach tryin to stay warm in the snuggly blankets and other stuff . Me and LC are so very sad if she is gettin ready to leave. But we are old enough to unnerstand that it happens. An that it will happen to us too. We’ve figured out that we don’t last here as long as Beins. But they don’t last forever here either. So we unnerstan that we hafta go away and that they do too.

The partin is hard, even if it is only for a while. Some Beins last so long there are many of us waitin for them to join us over The Bridge. But we go there an they do join us eventully. We don’t forget.

An it seem they don’t either. They remember us each an efry one an rejoice at the reunion. They remember efry single special place each of us loved to be scritched, individually an that tells us that we have been part of their lives an memmories the whiole long years we’ve been apart.

Ya cant ask for more than that, ya know?

We are getting along in our years. We know what is gonna happen some day… One day, I will wake up and LC wont be around any more. Or LC will be around and I wont. An The Big Thing will be sad and miss one of us. And he will hold the other closer an cry a lot.

But they-who-remain will go on with their lives and enjoy the warm days and mousie adventures, the snuggllins, the togetherness, and the food an treats… They wil ‘member who is gone and will be met again some day. We almos feel sorry for the Beins that they haf to wait so long.

But that’s the way of the world. Some get to meet their old friends sooner than others. Sure, we want to stay aroun with The Big Thing long, but we kinna want to see Tinkerbelle, and Jeremy, and our Mom and long-missed litterkin too…

It’s a hard thinkin, but it all works out eventally. We’re promised a chance to meet our friends an kin an our Beins again. It’s all we ask…

OUR MUTUAL GOTCHA DAY PARTY

ANNOUNCING –

OUR FIRST PARTY EFER!

We are celebratin our mutual Gotcha Days. Skeeter’s in 1992 an LC’s in 1993. Both on October 31st.

In considerashun of Bein activities on that day, we are holdin it on November 1st.

We are plannin on lotsa good food (Tuna, Ham, Shrimpsies, an of course some tastey speshul stinky goodness for those wif allergies or diets). We will be providin a list of those later. And Crunchies an treats, of course.

The cave will be all decorated wif paper ribbons to jump at and balloons to pop.

There will be clean litterpans in many discrete locations. The Big Thing will be doing prompt clean-out.

The door to the outside will be open to those kitties who want to check out the ponds and the shrubsies an such (an the outside is protekted by a real tall fence, so no vishus deer can get in).

There will be fishy an mousies videos to watch in one room anna piniata to claw at inna another room (at a specific time). The Piniata will have various treats an temptashuns.

Two words: Open NiptiniBar!

Onsite Butler/Maid/Litterbox Cleaner (The Big Thing).

Many comfy chairs, floor pillows, a tent, a multi-level kitty condo, a kingsize heated waterbed, 2 endless waterbowls (one reglar, one chicky-flavor).

Toys! Our whole bowl an even the large wiggly ones on sticks! Some special ones RENTED FOR THE OCASHUN! An The Big Thing hisself will personally make the RED DOT run aroun!

We’ll be puttin out some large paper bags to rush into, some small carpets to paw under and push aroun, there will be lotsa tables to get on (and stuff to push of them), a few stacks of magazines to scatter aroun, and The Big Thing has efen agreed to put up fresh rolls of bafroom paper to unroll! There will efen be some boxes to hide in (decoratd, of course).

We tryin fer a few balls of yarn, but The Big Thing fears injuries an horribel entangelments. We’re still werkin on that possibility. Can’t promise it, HE seems very firm (so far).

There are 2 (count them TWO) decks to sit on outside (perfectly safe, we assure you we do it alla time) with froggies an crickets to listen to after dark and squirrelies an birdies to watch inna light.

No Bein music or aniya that stuff HE thinks makes a good party. He’s the Staff for this party an his opinion doesn’t count. This is a kitty-party!

We’ll post the Chatya ID stuff here a couple days before the party…

BTW, the (dry) bafftub will serve as a place for any overnipped kitties to drouz it off (it will be softly lined wif blankies) an no blame will be attached an none mentioned. ;)

To try to keep the party available for friends at various places, the party will start at 3PM EDT. It will end “whenever”.

Pictures will follow soon as the decorations go up an the other arangments are made…

Skeeter and LC

WOW, We Went to a Party!

SKEETER and LC:

Fat Eric was celebratin his 12th bifday AND 4th Gotcha Day at the same time. Whatta blowout! Eferyone was there. He had great food, great decorations, great food, lotsa visitors, great food, extra litterboxes, efen some outdoors stuff to do (though we arrived late).

And thanks to Fat Eric, we know how to do it do. And just in time. We'll be announcing our double Gotcha Day party real soon! An we wanna thank Cheysuli too for postin a comment on our bloggie about how to do it. We needed both you guys' help!

We'd nefer done that before an it was REAL 'citin! We are both still kinna bug-eyed an runnin aroun the cave! It was INTENS talkin to so many kitties (RIGHT THERE in CATNESS themselfs an all).

Where would we be wifout friends to help us figure out things? We wouldn't efen have a bloggie, we guess wifout help from ofer kitties!

Happy 12th birfday AND 4th Gotcha Day, Fat Eric. An that was a great story about how those both happened years apart...

Blog Construction Work Today

SKEETER and LC:

We've been all jealous-like of the kitties whos bloglists show which other kitty blogs that have been updated. You know, where you look at somekitty on their blogroll an it looks like "Skeeter and LC updated". It looked like it could really save time visitin updated sites, cause not everykitty posts everyday, ya know?

So 3 weeks ago, we tried to set up an account with 2 different update sites. One replied in 2 days, but we couldn't get the account verification to work. So we waited a couple days an tried again. We were promised a reply "soon". When we realized that it had been 2 WEEKS, we emailed them again. FINALLY, we got an apology and the nice Beins even did the confirmation for us, so we could sign right in wifout a buncha more trouble.

The other updater site nefer did get back to us AT ALL, but we're not namin names (YET). It mighta been our fault anyway, an we're not sure, so that wouldnt be fair.

Since it was all rainin today an we had been sleepin like all night an day, we decided to explore it.

So we had a Bloglines account all set up and stared at the screen. And stared. And stared. We didn't have the slightest idea how to start usin it! The FAQs were not much help (have ya ever seen any that were?). Dont get us wrong, we aint gripin about Bloglines; we're delited that they provide such a cool service. An it being for free doesnt upset us either. ;) We're prety sure that ANY site would have confoosed US at first. But we find a useful FAQ about as often as we catch a mousie (which is not as often as we'd like).

Well, we got nerve an pashunse (even if not much nowledge), so we started trying stuff to see what would happen. We figured out that we hada set up a NEW FOLDER for our speshul list, an we found a neat shortcut to put in our bookmarks. How that works wifout takin us off our own bloggie is beyond us.

We're waitin to see what happens. Bloglines says they update each hour, so we are looking forward to see where that shows up. We'd like it to show up next the the names in our sidebar blogroll, but we dont see how that would happen (we didnt see anything that changed our bloggie template, but ya nefer know). We suspect we will hafta go to the Bloglines site (not a problem).

It took a while to add all the blogs in our sidebar to the NEW FOLDER (we named it KITTY BLOGROLL UPDATE), but it wasnt too bad. Mostly, we get bored doing the same thing over an over. There is a way to copy a whole list of sites, but we couldnt figure that one out.

We'll post about how well it works when we find out ourselfs...

Our Gotcha Day is Comin Up

October 31st. Halloween. For both of us in different years!

Isn't that WEIRD? We're gonna tell our stories about it (for each of us separately). We're really looking forward to it, too.

Birthdays are cool. We mean, we wouldn't be here wifout a birfday. But we almos fer sure wouldn't still be aroun (after 15 and 14 years) wifout a Gotcha Day by a good Bein. So we like that day better. So we're gonna try an make it a Big Deal.

How do ya throw a internet party? We have a stash of food an treats an nip, we have a lotta space in the Cave, we have a big fenced in back yard, an we have a lotta litterboxes (and very private temporaries are available). But we're not sure how ta have visitors teleportin in over the internet, ya know? The Big Thing has agreed to be "Butler/Waiter/Cleaner-Upper". If ya don't wanta say how publicly, our email is
s k e e t e r a n d l c - 2 1 1 8 @ c o m c a s t d o t n e t.

If any experienced party-throwers could clue us in, we'ld love to try it...

Things We Like to do Inside

SKEETER and LC: Its all drizzly and wet outside. The Big Thing is happy about that, but we aren't. LC sneaks out for a little bit, but she comes back in wet an icky. So, we took some pictures of things we like to do inside.

We sleep mostly. Sometimes together...

And sometimes alone.

We eat...

We wait by the door to get out (or at least to sniff out).

We sit aroun waiting for the rain to stop.

We play with toys (too hard to get a action picture).

Skeeter sits on The Big Thing for chin scritches until he (or both of them) falls asleep.

Tuesday, October 23, 2007

LC: I hafta wonder about Skeeter sometimes... He got a rare chance to go outside late at dark when it is all quiet and peceful (which he likes). But when he came in he ran for his litterbox to pee and poop. Inside, when he could have done it outside where it makes more sense.

I worry about him sometimes, I really do. He is not right in the head (or behind, whatever).

We Learnt Somethin NEW Today

SKEETER AND LC: We spent some time today figurin out how to put a "Gotcha Day" countdown clock inna our bloggie (it worked - take a look), but we were unhappy at how crowded all the sidebar stuff was. They were just packed together like those little sardinies inna can, ya know?

So we tried to figure out how to put some space between them so they didn't look all like it was one big picture. Now, we aren't trying to step on Skeezix's paws or anything (purrs for his endlessly helpful advice), but we try an figure stuff out fer ourselfs when we can. We saw there was a

at the end of every template code part, so we tried adding some of those. That dint work! We had already tried just "enter" a few times and knew that dint work eether...

So we hunted inna "Creating Web Pages" book and found a code (IT WORKED)! If ya wanna spread out the sidebar stuff inna template, all ya gotta do is add

at the end of each separate picture thing. Thats "left arrow, BR, right arrow, left arrow, BR, right arrow"... Thats < BR > < BR > but ya gotta remove the spaces.

We are findin it easier to paw into the template thingie rather than use the widget (though at least we know what that widget is thanks to Skeezix). So our sidebar pictures are more distiknt an separated now.

Thats so COOL. The Big Thing is so impressed we are gonna get some treats an a little nip to celebrate!!!

10,000 Visitor Contest

SKEETER and LC: Ooh, we just had to say how excited we are to see kitties sending in their guesses on the date. We have written down our own date (not that we have any control over it). But dont worry, our guess isnt in the contest!

The Big Thing says we can't win our own contest (apparently that wouldnt be fair). But he did say if we got it REAL close, he would get us a prezzie too. He is real nice about things like that (and we bet we get somethin whatever the right date is). MOL!

But he says we need to learn to share, so we are gonna hafta put the contest prezzies inna boxes ourselfs to send away to the winning kitties (sob!). That's gonna be hard. He will wrap the boxes all up an put the names an stuff on them, but we hafta see them go outta the cave! That's why he said we hafta put them in the boxes, "to partisipate".

Still, we are all kindsa excited! It is fun seein all the dates bein guessed at (an sometimes with cool xplanations). An we've nefer done this before, so it is all new and different.

10,000th Visitor Contest

Oops, we said the deadline was Oct 23rd Midnight. Gee we thought last dark was the 20th. It is extended to Oct 24th Midnight... We are new at this contest stuff... Gotta give a couple days, we guess...

Dragonheart and Parker, you can make new guesses if you want to. Since we changed things some an all, ya know?

PRACTICAL

OK, this is "Practical" to US. The weird things The Big Thing uses to keep things workin in the cave... He has LOTS MORE STUFF, but we dragged these together cause we see them most often...

Skeeter and LC

10,000th Visitor Is Comin Up

SKEETER and LC: The Big Thing pointed out to us that we are comin up on the 10,000th visitor. That seemed like a really HUGE number. So we haf decided to have a CONTEST.

Whateverkitty guesses the right day when it happens gets eligible for a PRIZE.

Here's the rules:
1. Ya gotta guess before midnight Oct 24 by a comment on our bloggie.
2. Give the date (1 per blog).
3. If there are multiple kitties who guess the right date, we will make a random drawing (names on paper inna hat).
4. If not the right date, closest counts.
5. First drawn right date kitty gets a cube tent an some treats.
6.. 2nd right date drawn kitty gets some treats.

Our thanks to Skeezix who helped us unnerstand some likely errors in this sorta thing! (We hope we din't make any boo-boos).

Decisions by US are final.

Chair Wars

SKEETER: A couple weeks ago, The Big cleared alla junk offa the nice solid easy chair.

I adopted it as my favorite new sittin spot cause I can see alla way down the hall. LC likes curlin up on the carpet in the room at the other end for the same reason.

Well, I went to hop up there today, and look who was there!

I told her that was MY spot an I wanted to sit there. She jus glared at me an said it was her spot for right then.

So I went an sat on HER favorite spot an gave her The Evil Eye for a while. I told her how much I was enjoying sittin on her spot, too.

I finally had to use BOTH eyes...

She finally got up "to drink some water" (she CLAIMED). I immediately went an took over MY spot again!

I Really Love Playin in Water

LC: So much so that The Big Thing hadda move the water to somewhere it could drain. I shovel the water out wif my paws until it is all gone unless there is a real lotta it. Bowls near our food dont work at all.

So we got the nefer-endin waterbowl. That is too much fer efen me to empty. The kitchin was a pond before The Big Thing got us that.

I still like to empty the bowl some, but it never runs out. But the cool new thing is that bubbles appear like magik inna container! I love to try to catch the bubbly things.

Sometimes I hafta wait an stare at it fer a long time. But the bubbly thing allas show up eventually.

Sometimes I have to drink alla water outta the bowl to get to bubble-things to show up again. Than I whap at them some kinna fierce.

Still havent caught one though. I bet they wuld taste great...
