Max The PyschoKitty menshunned his an Buddah's stuggle against NEW FOOD an NEW BOWLS! We salute their victory!
We had a similar struggle, though the victory was harder to win and we were not so determined each day as Max an Buddah.
It all started the day Ayla showed up. We had been eatin Friskies fer dinner (and 9Lives Tuna on Fridays) and sometimes got Fancy Feast fer breakfast. Life was routine an comfertable. There was always Meow Mix dry crunchies available all a time.
Well, when The Big Thing got Ayla, he learned about "healthier" canned stuff. Kitties, let us tell ya that if ya ever hear the word "healthier" and "cat food" at the same time, start bitin some Bein toes. Cause ya wont like it! It seems that "healthier" means "veggies" an carnivories like us dont want "veggies"!
The tricky part is that The Big Thing (TBT) only got the "healthy" stuff cause he cares about us. It is difficult to subvert a Bein on a health mission when it is "for our own good"!!!
So our wunnerful Friskies went off the pantry shelf that is dedicated to OUR food, and this "other" stuff went on. Granted, TBT aint no fool. He kept all the Friskies to mix with the new stuff gradually. He didnt jus plop the new stuff inna bowls an say "eat".
Ayla was used to "evo" canned stuff. It wasn't horrible, but we weren't thrilled. But it was 'spensive too. Like $5 a pound. We can almost get shrimp fer that, and real chickie and cow fer sure! Fish efen! But he bought a bunch of "Merrick" cans.
OK, we gotta say we got nothin against Merrick. There were lotsa flavors in it that sounded great. An we bet that kitties that grew up eatin it love it. Even wif awful veggies init! But we are not used ta it...
TBT started by mixin Merrick stuff in with our reglar Friskies a little atta time. We dint like that, but it wasnt too horrible. Ayla liked it. Well, she ate it, anyway. After 2 weeks, TBT started 1/4 Merrick to our Friskies. We started leavin some of it uneated at first, but it was gone by morning. We were kinna hungary.
After a few more weeks, he started 1/2 Merrick. We liked that less... We mean, we think there are even "carrots" in that stuff! But mostly even sneakier veggies we dont know, like all pulverized init!
When he went to 3/4 Merrick, we hated it completely. We would eat enough to keep body an soul together, but that was it. Even Ayla stopped eating much. We were gettin along on the dry crunchy Meow Mix.
When TBT tried 100% Merrick, we gave up eatin much of it. We picked bits of meat out of the "soup", but even that dint taste too good!
Keep in mind that TBT was willin to toss uneatin food out fer 2 months! An we were eatin less an less of it each coupla weeks. Things were not goin well...
Well, on Ayla's 2 month anniversary March 16th, he gave up. WE WON, WE WON, WE WON!!!
TBT came home wif CASES of Friskies cans! He efen went an found about efry flavor we hadnt tried before! Um, yer not gonna beleef this, but he actually keeps records of what we like an why ("Yum", "smell", "oils", "toothiness", etc. REELY! That's where the Sunday Cat Food Review comes from... So he efen came home with individual cans of stuff we had nefer tried before!
So far, fer 2 weeks, we haf hadda new untried flavor efry day! All used up though. Tomorrow, we start gettin the ones we rated "best". An when those run out, we will get the newer "best" of the new flavors we tried.
Is THAT cool or what?
So, we dint fight as hard as Max an Buddah in the short-term, but we struggled more in the long-term.
An now we are gettin our favorites ferefer and efer! Ayla efen likes the Friskies better than her old stuff.
An TBT is gonna donate all that stuff we dint like to some Beins who feed feral kitties who are happy ta eat anything they can get. Makes us realize how lucky we are...
Victory tastes like... Friskies canned cat food!

The M-Cats Mouse Hunt (Aftermath)
SKEETER:
Whatta Hunt! We caught(by my unsure count), 11 real mousies, 7 voles, and 3 "THREE!" Moles.
I couldnt be efrywhere at once, of course, but I know that The Feline Americans caught 6 voles, Eric & Flynn caught a real serious fighting mole, Victor and Cecil caught one of the mousies, Tigger caught 2 mousies, Jake almost got a mole by hisself, and Cecil/Bert/Jake/Victor did werk together ta get a mole.
They declared it tastey". Well sure... We all loved the taste of the various types of mousies (and no shame in enjoying them).
We all had chickie broth an Niptinis on the deck between mousie hunts. That was real relaxin...
An we all had a great OUTDOOR POOP/PEE session after... That was great. Some of the guys "did it" outdoors ("au natural") fer the first time. There is somethin kinna 'citin about that if yer not used ta it. Rakin real dead leafs an twigs over yer "stuff" is great.
An of course, there was lots of talkin. Mancats DO talk among themselfs ya know. Some girlcat questions, some puter stuff, some jus "daily" stuff. It was great.
Some of the mancats got outside fer the first time ever. Given the inexperience, I hafta say they handled themselves well. Nokitty panicked bein outside, they caught onto the mousie huntin business real quick (with some helpful advice from sperienced hunters), an some of them them efen caught a mousie.
OK, so maybe there was a question (like "OK I grabbed one, now whadda I do wif it?"), but they all did fine. I helped them, and they ALL did great. Some knew JUST what ta do. An they helped the others, too.
And, I will haf you know, we efen discussed cooking details like Alton Brown (Good Eats), measuring cups, salt-shakers, and scales. And rain and snow problems. Between huntin the mousies, of course.
AND had some great "natural" food, I might add.
Then there was the Burpin contest. That was fun! Bert&Jake, Cecil, an Victor did very well. I had the biggest loudest deepest BURP, though. Well, I'm old an sperienced... But I sure heard some impressive ones from the other guys! Very satisfying an Mancatly!
My thanks to Mr Tigger, Angus, Speedy, Miles&Sammy Meezer, Socks, Eric&Flynn, Speedy, Derby, The Feline Americans (Charmee, Fuzzypants, Pumpkin, and Puffy), Victor Tabbycat, Bert&Jake, an Cecil the Couger for comin ta help with da mousies. I hope I dint miss anykitty! If I did, let me know so I can add you.
We really reduced the population! There are some left, but The Big Thing is pleased that there are so many fewer...
Would ya beleef it? He offerred me some treats after the party an I was too full of voles ta want any! That's a first!

The Great M-Cat Club Mousie Hunt
I took lotsa pictures of the back yard. One thing I gotta point out is that it is fer M-Cat Club Members. I decided we needed ta do somethin to get the club goin" wif a "adventure". LC an Ayla are plannin their own party in the near future.
An I gotta real cool "swamp" across the street fer a future adventure! Fer brave M-Cat members!
So, guy-members, here is what ya be seein from the deck.
Goin round from the far left ta the right...

The lawn is great fer moles

Vole Country!
More vole country!

Mouses like this wild area on the right. Lottsa seeds they eat!
Is that a great Mousie hunting area, or what?
And there are details...
The decks are high to look from.
There are ponds ta drink from.
And there are special areas to pee an poop in (an unner the low deck is great!)... Like the far right fence area...
Plus the litterboxes inside if ya want 'em! Trust, me, their there.
An the astonishing ladder ta climb!
An here is what vole holes look like. They dig up from mole tunnels!

Skeeter's Great Mousie Hunt
LC: Skeeter asked me ta set up the administrative details of the Great Mouse Hunt while he is out takin pictures. Aktally, I KNOW he jus thinks I have a "heavy camera paw", but I like doin the detailed stuff anyway...
First, the purpose: We haf too many "mousies" in the yard. We catch what we can, but ya can only watch so many holes at once! So The Big Thing wants us to catch lots. So we are organizin the Great Mouse Hunt.
Second: "Mousies" are moles, voles, and real mouses. Here are pictures...

ID clues: Mouse - Ears, long tail, snout, round body. Vole - Hardly no ears, short tail, longer body. Mole - No ears, no eyes, wide paws, short tail. Don't worry, none of 'em are bigger than a play toy, though moles are a little larger then the mouse or vole.
Third: When teleportin through Chatzy, ya will aktally arrive just INSIDE the house near the deck door. We know some kitties arent used ta being outside that much, so we dont want anykitty ta panic. An iffa yer not comfertable outside, the first outside ya'll see is a high deck that's safe ta sniff aroun on. The door will stay open fer goin in an out.
Fourth: The weather WILL be good. It will not rain here! The Big Thing has made "ARRANGEMENTS". An the Moon will be up an almost full-bright. The will be no nasty-blowin wind, so we will be able ta hear the mouse crawlin among the dry crunchy leafs...
Fifth: There will be 7 litterpans inna basement. But as we will be out most of the time, efrykitty is encouraged to use the glorious outdoors. The Big Thing encourages us to. Belief it or not, our "business" is aktally good fer the plants. There will be a large designated area where the fallen leafs are thick and easily pawable fer coverin up!
Sixth: Food is, well, mostly mousies. There will be some Dr Hills and Evo dry crunchies, and some reglar-day stinkey-goodness fer the unlucky cats (or who dont really want to EAT a mousie. 'Sides, we dont know who many mousies will get catched. So it wont be fancy inside food but nokitty will go hungry.
Seventh: Drink will be mostly outside pond water (trust us it really tastes best), but there will be reglar inside water and chickie broth too. Skeeter has advised me that he is determined to have a few niptinis snuck away, but let's say that may or may not happen (The Big Thing is nervous about hafin a dozen nipped-out kitties runnin aroun outside).
Eighth: The Big Thing will be generally watchin over us from the upper deck. He will haf a flashlight to shine in case any fightin breaks out (over, for example, ownership of caught mousies), but will try not to use it while we are stalkin mousies.
Ninth: Mentionin the fence again. Efrykitty is perfectly safe inside it. But ya CAN get ofer it iffen ya know how and try hard. We discourage tryin. There are some large woofies outside of it. An some weerd animals in the dark like rackoons an possims (an efen vishus deer). So stay inside the fence.
Tenth: Skeeter says he has took some pictures of all the fenced-in yard and will post them tomorow. He says it will take a while ta fuss with them ta make them "good fer planning". Thursday, he will post the teleporting site address an password...
Hope ta see you there!

In Search Of...
The Big Thing here: I've been trying to find some cat statues to put on the front steps for a year now. No luck.

Like this...
But not expensive material. Just something that would be OK outside in the rain and snow. At least real-cat size or larger. Concrete, plastic, resin, aluminum, whatever. And cat. Not lions, or tigers, or bears (oh my). I'm just not having any luck searching for them. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Treats and toys offerred as a reward...

Smudge
In memry of a very nice little kitty who has gone over the Bridge...
They go quietly into the dark night.
Those little cat feet, so silent and sweet.
The paws that touch us gently
Carry our friends so suddenly away…
There is no law that forces our friends
To stay with us some set number of years.
Some can remain with us a long time.
Some can not…
Love is not measured by time
It is not measured by years.
It is measured by love and intensity.
A love we get to share…

Thursday Thirteen on Friday - Toys
AYLA: I love my toys, I sure do!

Softie Mouse is the bestest efer! I carry him aroun all ofer the house! I bat him unner stuff just to get him out. He dont got no stuffins in him, but that is so great!

My next favorite is Mr Rattly Mouse. I love him lots too. He is real good when tossed up on the bed. I follow that rattly sound anywhere.

Fevver-butt thing is lots of fun too. I jump SO high to catch it when tossed.

Squishy Mouse is good. I chase him roun an roun when he is tossed. I chewed of a arm...

The soft balls are good. I've got some wif red colors an some dark ones. They bat aroun good but I dont carry them.

The hard squiggle things are cool ta carry aroun. They skitter across the floor real good, too. They feel neat to bite and carry.

My biggest fever. I love fevvers! Sometimes I walk aroun wif it it in my mouf a long time...

Snakie-chewy. It feels weird. When The Big Thing makes it wiggle, I pounce efry time. Its the squiggliest. It is funny ta bite cause my teefs go right through the holes.

The Wand Toy. Sigh... I'll chase it as long s The Big Thing makes it walk along the floor or fly around...

The rattle ball is weird. Sometimes I will chase it fer a hour. Sometimes not. I cant push it unner chairs cause it is big an hard. Thats annoyin. I like to stuff things unner chairs.

The little pouch is cool. It slides good. Makes a good little pillow, too. Sometimes I just sit wif my chin on it.
The Big Things fingers are good toys. I can gnaw (carefully) and bunny kick them when he pretens his whole hand is anofer little kitty. That's nice cause Skeeter an LC dont play like I do.

I like pompoms, too. They are real fuzzy an they feel good in my mouf. Like a mousie. I useta haf 5 of these, but I ript them all aparts. The Big Thing says he cant find these many-color ones anymore. So, Im bein careful wif dis las one!

Middle Name Meme
TT tagged Ayla with a MIDDLE NAME MEME. PB&J tagged all 3 of us. Thank you all.
Here is how it works:
1. You have to post the rules before you give your answers.
2. You must list one fact about yourself beginning with each letter of your middle name. (If you don't have a middle name, use your maiden name or your mother's maiden name).
3. At the end of your blog post, you need to tag one person (or blogger of another species) for each letter of your middle name. (Be sure to leave them a comment telling them they've been tagged.)
PRINCESS AYLA ISABEL SPENCER:
I – In Charge – I am in charge of this house. The Big Thing, Skeeter, and LC jus don’t know yet!
S – Siamese – Well, of course! ThiS I AM. ;)
A – Aristocratic – I AM a PRINCESS, after all!
B – Beautiful – I am sure LC weeps at night in envy…
E – Elegant – I pose so much better than Skeeter or LC. I even look elegant in the litterbox!
L – Luxuriant – I haf the world’s silkiest softiest fur. I stretch SO long and lean.
SKEETER BUDDY SPENCER:
B – Benign – I’m the strongest cat in the house, but I don’t get all bossy about it.
U – Useful – I catch a lot of annoying moles, voles, and mousies outside.
D – Dedicated – I am totally dedicated to The Big Thing. He is the center of the universe!
D – Dancey – Yes, I will stand up and dance fer treats. I love them THAT much.
Y – Yawny – I love to nap, so I yawn a lot. Also it shows off my big mouth full of sharp teeth!
LC DIANA SPENCER:
D – Destroyer – Of Frogs mostly. I catch one efry coupla days. There seems ta be an endless supply…
I – Independent – Im not a lapcat! Or a bedtime snuggler. An no one better picks me up!
A – Assertive – Skeeter may be bigger, but I don’t let him boss me around at all.
N – Native – Im an American Domestic Shorthair. That means Im from HERE!
A – Aloof – I’ll come by an rub against The Big Thing, or stay near. But he is “staff”…
We couldn’t possibly tag a kitty fer each letter of our middle names, so we is taggin 3 groups of kitties:
The Zoo
Dr Tweety et al of the Fab 5
The Big Piney Woods Cats

St. Patrick's Day!
Lightpaw Lap(high)lander here:
Today seems ta be me own proper day, so I am gettin' ta post! The Big Thing, he isnt green; the other kitties, they arent green; in fact there's not much of the green anywhere in the house. I normally stay in the big TV Room, since the walls are a nice shade of shamrock, if ya know what I mean. I have noticed The Big Thing drinks his beer out of nice green bottles, so he's alright.
The day started good. Everyone in the house came and wished me a Happy St. Patrick's Day. The eating kitties got they Fancy Feast Breakfast and I got me usual saucer o' beer. The Big Thing was wearin his one green shirt (and efen green socks - now how many Guy Beins have green socks, I ask you?) and all was well with the world.

After breakfast the other kitties went to sit in the sun. I avoid that being of fair complexion and all, but they like it.

After a while, Ayla asked Skeeter when the door gets opened. Being that she has just recently been allowed ta go outside with Skeeter and LC on a regular basis, she is anxious to do so each nice day. She was a touch disappointed when Skeeter (seems like a nice Irish nickname, but the poor lad is ORANGE) told her there is no particular time so "it just happens O'Cassionally" (pardon the pun).

Well about that time, The Big Thing noticed they were all near the door and decided ta take some nice pictures (fer postcards perhaps?). He doesn't often find them all together, and even then had trouble getting them all in the same picture.
So he had this bright idea ta open the door "just a crack". That usually gets them crowding around. The poor lad, he no sooner opens it just a little when Ayla twists her head a bit an squeezes right through!

I mean, in one way, she is a whole 9 months old today and not a tiny kitten anymore, but in the other way she is still ONLY 9 months old and she is a slender lass indeed! Skeeter and LC just stared at each other saying "how did she DO that". I was laughing; "good for the clever little lass"! I like a clever lass...
Well, given that Ayla was out (of the picture, so ta say), he opened the door and they all went out. He took more pictures.
I reviewed them later in the afternoon. Pretty good fer freehand camera-holding, I must say (those are often blurry for the poor boy). I attribute it to The Day, and that he was blessed by The Saint hisself.

Skeeter, who almost nefer goes out in the daylight (wise old kitty, he) went right out and immediately saw a squirrel ta chase. The squirrel bein too fast fer his old feet, he came back up on the deck and smelled the nice flowers growin there.

Ayla followed him back on the deck. She loves that boy (as a Big Brother). She checked out the flowers too.
Then they all came back inside. Ya won't believe what they found. Now ya got ta be understanding that Skeeter and LC have lived most of their lives with The Big Thing getting kibble available during the day and some Stinky Goodness fer dinner. A while ago, they started getting Fancy Feast fer Breakfast "sometimes", and since Ayla arrived, "every day". Well, today they got Fancy Feast fer "lunch" too!
LC was happy cause she was late fer breakfast and Ayla had eaten her portion. Skeeter was happy, cause he just enjoys eatin good-smelly stuff. Ayla was happy cause she is jus always hungry!
The Big Thing was happy cause he needed to go do some work outside and needed to have the gate in the fence open while he did it.
All in all, a pretty good St. Patrick's Day fer all concerned! May the wind always be at your back...
.

More Outside Time!
AYLA:
It was great getting outside coupla days ago fer a hour, but I'm STUNNED! The Big Thing left the deck door open ALL DAY yesterday and 3 hours today!
It was all warm an sunny here both days, so we could all go out or come in as we pleased. The Big Thing was out with us doin some stuff Skeeter an LC says brings flowers and pretty bugs an more birdies. I dint see any bunch more birdies or any pretty bugs, but they tole me it takes a while. Well, they gone through this a buncha times, so I'll trust them. Anything that brings more birdies souns good, an Ive nefer seen a "pretty bug".
I efen had some play-fights with LC. I jumped aroun corners at her, bounced at her wif my back all arched up, jumped ofer her when she was noticin, and all kinna stuff. We both ran the WHOLE LENGTH of the yard several times!

We efen played paw-whap through some yellow flowers. Ya reach between the leafs an flowers and try ta tap the others paws. I didnt to too well... But maybe if I play wif her more, I will get better at it an she will lick my head like she does Skeeter...
So I got to wander farther away from the house than before. Skeeter an LC say that efrythin inside the big tall fence is OURS! Wow, I dint know. They said, sure he builded the fence to claim this whole space jus fer us kitties.

I found a big pile of sticks to climb on. It was tricksy cause they was real loose an shifty!

A pile of big pieces of trees to explore.

LC showed me her favrit place ta sit unner shrubs an watch birdies (I LOVE watchin birdies)! Can ya see me unner them?

Part of the yard has lots of little trees that are neat to sneak aroun in...

Sometimes ya efen see a squirrel. Here I am starin at one across the yard!

I ATE MY FIRST GRASS! I saw Skeeter doin it and tried it myself. It isnt tasty, but oddly inneresting ta do. Skeeter says it helps if ya lick too much fur or eat some fevvers or somethin.

Skeeter sits up on the deck a lot watchin over LC an me.

Tagged With a New Meme!
We got tagged with an unusual meme by Aged Cat . This one is certainly different! Here are the rules:
1. Pick up the nearest book.
2. Open to page 123
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the next three sentences.
5. Tag five people and post a comment to Empress once you post it to your blog so “I” (empress, not us) can come see!
1. Book is ‘Twisted Whiskers’ by Pam Johnson
2. Page 123 is in the chapter“Cats and Their Human Families"
3. Sentence 5 was the introduction to a list of things concerning “when the children grow”.
4. Next 3 sentences: “Teach the proper handling of animals. If your child grabs a tail or a fistful of fur, gently get him to let go and pet your cat to demonstrate how softly an animal is to be petted. Your petting the cat will also calm and reassure him.”
5. Tagging 5 seems excessive. We’ll tag 3. And we’ll alter it to be a book about pets (however far you want to stretch it is fine).

Thursday 13 - Outside Adventure
AYLA:
I got ta go outside again (finally). I hadnt got ta go out fer a WHOLE BIG MOON! Well, I was in heat fer a while, then on some medicine. An The Big Thing has found a coupla places in the fence he though mebbe I could get through.
Well, he got those all fixed up and said I could go out! Now, I been TRYIN ta get out efry time Skeeter or LC was let out. An the other times I was alowed out, The Big Thing carried me to the lawn. So today he jus goes an opens the deck door and waits...
I was afraid ta go out on my own (well Skeeter and LC went right out) but it was differnt hafin to step outside by myself! I kep sniffin outside, runnin inta the house an then goin back ta the open door.
But I finally did go out... The Big Thing tooked pictures!

I stayed up on the deck at first, lookin all around the yard. That was pretty excitin itself.

But I finally hopped off the rail and went off onto the lawn.

Skeeter had been waitin for me on the lower deck and we stepped off together.

Skeeter and LC found a spot where there was new exposed dirt. They smelled it very carefully.

They got tired of that, so LC sat down and Skeeter went off by hisself.

I went over and checked out the spot myself. I did smell REAL innerestin!

Skeeter and LC decided ta wrassle some.
Skeeter kindly lays down an lets LC do the pouncin.

They get pretty strong about it. I'm not ready fer that. I've played "paw-whap" wif both of them, but they go whole-body! I worry sometimes, but then they stop an groom each other.

Skeeter went off ta get a drink from the little pond.

I followed him an ended up explorin the "flowerbed". I havent seen any "flowers" yet, but Skeeter tells me they are plants that will grow tall then it gets warmer. L says they are good to hide in.

I saw a bug in the flowerbed. I watched it real good to learn what it did (which was not much).

We were outside a LONG TIME (a hour). When The Big Thing told me ta come in, I came in this time. I didnt last time and he didnt let me out fer a long time. So, Im gonna be good so I can go out more often!
