Em Itália, tal como em outros países, a música da juventude dos fabulosos anos 60 foi acima de tudo constituída por pop, beat, rock garagem e canções de protesto, do agrado de muitas jovens.
A música beat foi importada de Inglaterra na esteira da Beatlemania e do Merseybeat, com canções e ritmos simples, mas foi o suficiente para quebrar a monotonia da música italiana e da liderança dos 'cantores' de Sanremo. O Beat italiano feito nos anos 60, era constituído por música alegre e associada a uma revolução de mentalidades, vestuário e postura, com a inclusão da moda hippie, um pouco estranha, colorida e pacifista. Foi acima de tudo uma espécie de revolta dos jovens, através dessas simples e ingénuas canções de protesto para afirmarem a sua liberdade, assim como a alteração do seu aspecto e vestuário com cabelos longos, calças boca de sino, medalhões e outros adereços. Entre 1966 e 1968 surgiram canções memoráveis associadas à Beat.
Em Itália, foi a época do surgimento de fantásticos grupos como, Equipe 84, Nomadi, Rokes, Ribelli, Corvi, New Dada, das "Meninas do Piper 'Patty Pravo e Caterina Caselli, entre muitos outros.
In Italy The fab Sixties were above all Beat Music and related (folk beat, garage beat, beat 'nero' and protest song), different aspects of a music that many people love too, maybe too much.
