Steam Kodok, V/A - 26 A-Go-Go Ultrarities from the 60s Singapore and Southeast Asia Underground (1964 / 1969)

sexta-feira, 16 de dezembro de 2011

Steam Kodok (26 A-Go-Go Ultrarities From The 60's Singapore And South-East Asia Underground -1964/69

Steam Kodok is an above average collection of "Ultrarities From the 60's Singapore and South-East Asia Underground" (as the subtitle to this collection reads). It might be too diverse for those interested in totally hip sounding 1960s music, but that diversity is actually one of the things which lends this compilation a bit more excitement than the standard ones.

Steam Kodok worked for me in portraying a highly diverse and exciting scene of 1960s pop music in Singapore (and the surrounding area). Found in this collection are sides from acts like D'4 Ever, Les Kalifas, Mike Ibrahim and the Nite Walkers, Rosnah and The Siglap Five, Kassim Slamat and the Swallows, Ronnie Ong, October Cherries, The Quests, Naomi and The Boys, Ismail Haron and The Guys, The Dynamics and The Antarctics. Don't be afraid by the mysterious names; this compilation rocks with all sorts of fuzzed out/ soul/folk rock/ surf/girl group sounds and some of it is even in English.

For me the compilation was the most exciting when it had some great fuzz, some great girls, or was at it's most bizarre. Mungkir Janji by D'4 Ever mixes The Yardbirds' riff from For You Love with a haunting male vocal lead, an upbeat rhythm and some subtle fuzz. Mike Ibrahim and the Nite Walkers have a jazzy upbeat frat rocker in the song Chock Chock Kundong, which I'm sure would inspire Los Samplers. The most bizarre and intriguing moment in the compilation comes from Fox, with a song title in an unprintable language - which has some haunting cat howls throughout the moody, sinister tune. Ronnie Ong's version of Buttons and Bows works quite well, actually (and is sung in English), thanks to some amazing fuzz guitars. The capping moment to side one of the lp, is the tremendous version of Donovan's Barabajagal by October Cherries, one of my favorite fuzzy moments on this collection. Side two of this lp compilation has my all time favorite cut, in Naomi and The Boys' song Bad Loser (a Peter Thomas song!). This song has a wonderful sweet female lead singer (who sings in English) with combination fuzz rock / toy piano sounds backing her up. This song was a nice surprise and made me want to hear more by Naomi and The Boys.

Steam Kodok is a really great collection, opening up a door to a side of music I had never heard before. And like compilations like the ones with the Japanese GS bands, The French Yeye, and the Cambodian Rocks compilations, I found this compilation to be an amazing and exciting listen.

Sakura - Like I Do (EP 1966)

quinta-feira, 20 de outubro de 2011

Sakura - Like I Do (EP Columbia ECHK 557, 1966).

Tracks: Like I Do / My Bonnie / Sad Movie / Listen People.

Sakura Teng aka Ying Hua (from Singapore) was one of the more popular female Mandarin song singers from the 60s era. She sang in a variety of languages, from Mandarin to Bahasa Malaysia, English and even Japanese. Many of her recordings were accompanied by The Quests.
A 1967 Radio Weekly article called Sakura a "pint-sized extrovert and livewire". Interestingly, her stage name is actually a literal translation of her Chinese name, 'Ying Hua', (meaning cherry blossom in Mandarin)! Apparently she was given the nickname when she started singing Japanese numbers in Chinese during her stage performances. Sakura's debut EP, featuring the tracks: "Like I Do", "My Bonnie", "Sad Movie" and "Listen People", sold over 25,000 copies when it was released in 1966. The backing band featured in this recording is none other than The Quests (credited as Sounds Anonymous). I think this is such a happy tune, you can almost sense Sakura's fun spirit.

Hong Kong & Macau 60'S Scene (V/A)

terça-feira, 27 de setembro de 2011

60's Hong Kong, Macau (and Singapore) Scene V/A.

In the Sixties, Mainland China was busy with the Cultural Revolution, which branded Rock and Roll as a sign of Western decadence. Nevertheless, the "Beat Wave" hit big in three Chinese territories that remained open to British or Portuguese influence - Hong Kong, Singapore and Macau.

The Thunders (Os Trovões), from Macau

Hong Kong and Macau
The Beatles concert in Hong Kong in 1964 marked the birth of the golden age of the Hong Kong pop scene. From 1964 to 1969, a great number of bands appeared. They sung in English, as Cantonese and Mandarin songs were considered to be old fashion. These bands normally did cover versions of songs from the UK or the US. This scene reflects the multicultural diversity of the city. Musicians of different nationalities were active in the Hong Kong band scene: Chinese, British, Swedish, Macanese, Portuguese, Pilipinos, Singaporeans and Indians, among others. The most popular venues for stage shows and gatherings for youngsters in Hong Kong and Kowloon were called "Tea Dances". These weekend afternoon dance parties took place in night clubs and Chinese restaurants, providing Hong Kong bands with an opportunity to play live. Major bands were signed by Diamond, a subsidiary label of Polydor: Teddy Robin and The Playboys, The Mystics, Joe Jr. and The Side Effects, Menace, Lotus, Anders Nelson and The Inspiration, The Fabulous Echoes, D'Topnotes, Mod East, Magic Carpets, Danny Diaz and The Checkmates, to name a few. EMI on the other hand concentrated on the Mandarin song market, recording artists from the Shaw Brothers (the largest Hong Kong Movie company), such as Connie Chan (Chan Po-chu), Josephine Siao (Siao Fong-fong) and Nancy Sit, who recorded Chinese versions of international hits. Bands who joined EMI were relatively less active and less successful in the market: Thunderbirds (whose lead singer Robert Lee, was the brother of Kung Fu star Bruce Lee), The Thunders (from Macau - Portuguese influence), the only band that successfully crossed over to Hong Kong in the 60s), The Reynettes (who were a Filipino brother and sisters group), The Quest, from Singapore, who were stationed in Hong Kong in 1968. Most of the bands disbanded in 1969. In the 1970s, Teddy Robin, Joe Jr and Sam Hui (of Lotus) all became solo singers. Yet the glory days were over. In the mid 1970s, Sam Hui single-handedly invented a new Canto-pop market. It proved to be very successful in the coming years, thus putting a final stop to the so called "Golden Band Era of Hong Kong".

Teddy Robin And The Striplings (1964)

Singapore
Here, groups were formed, signed, with records being released weekly. Furthermore, in multicultural Singapore bands were playing music but singing them in English (which was the major language), Malay and Chinese. Therefore fans had three streams to choose from. Cliff Richard and The Shadows played a concert in Singapore in late 1961 and that marked the beginning of the Beat group era with bands which were strictly instrumental. Most times, singers were an adjunct to the band. The arrival of the Beatles in 1963 changed the emphasis from the instrumental band scene to self-contained units with singers and instrumentalists, although strictly instrumental bands flourished for a long time yet in Singapore – as there was a need for instrumental music in many situations. Singapore's musical scene was a mix of different influences sung in English, Malay and Chinese. They ranged from popular bands like Quests who came from the early Sixties era, Naomi and The Boys who had a successful four year run, Antartics who personified the second wave of R'n'B tinged groups, then Malay groups like D'4 Ever, Les Kafila's, Mike Ibrahim and The Nite Walkers, Swallows, Ismail Haron and The Guys and two guests from Thailand - Dynamics and Fox. The music ranges from Pop R'n'B, early Heavy to the plain weird. It is a mix of Western influences and Asian ethnic diversity produce something unique that can only be called Singaporean pop.

Ismail Haron And The Guys (EP 1969)

terça-feira, 8 de março de 2011

Ismail Haron And The Guys (EP Parlophone EGEP 667, 1969 /Singapore/Malaysia Malay).

Ismail Haron (full name: Ismail bin Harun) (b. 13 May 1946 in Killiney Road, Singapore) is a Singaporean singer.
Haron is from a big family of 8 boys and 4 girls. He became interested in pop music like everyone else and began to harbour intentions of singing. He said that he had been singing in front of schoolboys since he was 7 or 8, at assembly periods. He was from Queenstown Secondary Technical School.
The first group he joined was Valiants. He was with them for only a few months. Then he teamed up with Vigilantes some of whom were his secondary school classmates, to record their first EP under the Eagle label, with a series of Malay songs adapted from English hits, namely "Senyuman Terakhir" ("Green Green Grass Of Home"), "Pulang Pada-Ku", "Mari Sayang" ("Hang On Sloopy") and "Mari Menari" ("La Bamba"). His 1968 album with The Vigilantes called "Jangan Marah Lili" contained the hit "Enam Belas Lilin" ("Sixteen Candles"), which remained in the Malaysian charts for 15 consecutive weeks. Another EP that he recorded under Panda in the same year contained songs like "Impian Suchi", "Tangisan Hati", "Gadis Peladang" and "Mengusek Mambang".
Ismail was actually the second vocalist for The Vigilantes. The first vocalist for this band was a Singaporean Peranakan singer, Solo Chu, with his only album containing songs "Kau Tinggal-kan Diri-ku", "Jangan Salah Sangka", "Di-Goda Kenangan" and "Harapan Hati Kaseh".
Prior to this, The Vigilantes was an instrumental band with Eagle Records and had managed to record an EP with songs "Till We Meet Again", "I Fell Into A Trance", "Love In Bloom" and "Reminiscence".
Meanwhile, The Vigilantes had decided to change their name to "The Guys" due to changes in the bands' line-up and the style of their music performance. Also, the band and Ismail Haron had secured a contract with the world's recording giant, EMI. In 1968, they began their recording stinct with EMI with an EP containing "Ribin Biru" ("Pretty Ribbon"), "Ku Ta'kan Jatoh Chinta Lagi" ("I'll Never Fall In Love Again"), "Tunggu-lah Puan" ("Keep On Runnin'") and "Delailah" ("Delilah"). As most of his rendition was based from Tom Jones' popular song and that he emulated the singer's way of performance, he was later given the moniker "Singapore's Tom Jones". He said he did not mind but Tom Jones was not his main idol. He said his main inspirations were black singers. He said he was the first to do James Brown songs in Singapore.
A few more EPs ware released in later part of 1968 and early 1969 with more hits like "Sembilan Bulan Ku Nanti-kan", "Kenangan Manis Di-Kuala Lumpur", "Bersedia" ("Get Ready"), "Bebas-kan Daku" ("You Keep Me Hanging On"), "Sudi Sudi-kah Dikau?" ("Gimme Gimme Good Lovin'") and "Ku Tiada Minta Lahir Ka-Dunia" ("The Music Played"). However, the year 1969 witnessed the end of The Guys' recording career and their final work being put up was for another artiste, Eddie Ahmad, with "Khayalan" ("The Fool On The Hill"), "Rintehan", "Chipta'an-Ku" and "Hanya Mimpi".
Ismail Haron also recorded four English songs with The Guys in one EP under EMI - "My Elusive Dreams", "The Rose", "A Minute Of Your Time" and "Hungry For Love".
In 1970, Ismail Haron embarked for a solo career with his first solo EP under EMI titled "Kehilangan Chinta" ("Without Love"). He took a break for a live performance in Hong Kong in the same year for a few months. By this time, he was under the management of Quill Organisation. They decided to form a supergroup and got Roland and Eddie from Guys, saxophone player Andrew Oh from Pink and Purple, John Choo (organ, sax) and Philip Koh (drums) from Blackjacks. They were even spotted by Robert Stigwood who was manager of Bee Gees and ex Cream who wanted to manage and record them and bring them over to the West. They were even offered a gig in Japan which somehow never materialised. Instead they played in Bangkok at Montieth and at Udon Thani further North near the Lao border. Udon was a US base and they were playing in club for US soldiers and officers.
Then they came back to Singapore and continued playing the clubs in 1971 and 1972. The band changed personnel at this time. Various members came and went. Finally the group broke up. Ismail continued to record a few more solo albums - "Ismail Haron & Maria" (1972), "Ilham Pujangga" (1972), "Ismail Haron" (1972), "Antara Pujangga Dan Insan Biasa" (1973), "Sutra Mulia" (1974), "Hulurkan Tangan" (1975) and "Potret Sindiran" (1975). Among his popular hits within these periods were "Dendam-ku Kerana Maria" ("I Did What I Did For Maria"), "Antara Anak Dan Ayah" ("My Boy"), "Tolong Damai-kan" ("Mammy Blue"), "Ilham Pujangga", "Wati", "Persembahan-ku", "Hey Hey Sunny", "Junainah", "Kehilangan Chinta" and "Apa Khabar Sayang" ("Hello Darling").
Between 1972 and 1976, Ismail Haron recorded a few duet songs with diva Anita Sarawak. Songs include "Alam Terpuja" ("You Make Me Feel Brand New"), "Rahsia-Mu Rahsia-Ku" ("Sealed With A Kiss"), "Janji Tetap Janji" ("My Girl"), "Gabus Tarbus" ("House Of Bamboo"), "Asmara", "Rahsia Di-Ayer Jerneh", "Menunggu Nasi Minyak" and "Kesah Dol dan Minah".
He returned to Singapore in June 2003 because he wanted to see his family. Meanwhile, during his stay in his hometown, he continued to perform in hotels and on TV shows, both in the republic and the neighbouring Malaysia; one of which was on the programme "Ogy And Salih" in conjunction with Eidul Fitri celebration. Ismail's comeback concert held at Downtown East, Singapore in December 2008 was well accepted by both young and old. He also recorded his comeback album under Life Records containing a mix of new compositions as well his old 60s recordings originally under EMI plus a brief biography on himself. On 29 March 2009, Ismail Haron and his previous EMI colleague Junainah performed live at the Malaysian Handicraft Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
In an interview with Malaysian daily Utusan Malaysia, Ismail Haron mentioned that he plans to migrate to Kuantan, the east-coast city of peninsular Malaysia, as a permanent resident to continue with his singing career.
