Originalmente como The Surfaris, The Original Surfaris formaram-se em 1960, em Fullerton, Califórnia, EUA. O grupo que é referido neste LP gravado pela Diplomat (1965) não foi o único com este nome (Surfaris). Na época, no Sul da Califórnia, havia pelo menos mais uma banda com o nome de The Surfaris, e uma delas gravou o grande sucesso “Wipe Out “, em 1963. Assim. The Original Surfaris não devem ser confundidos com esse famoso grupo The Surfaris, os tais que produziram "Wipe Out". 

The Original Surfaris foi forçado a mudar o seu nome quando os outros Surfaris obtiveram o referido grande sucesso e interpuseram uma acção judicial sobre o nome do grupo. A banda que tinha conseguido o êxito ganhou a acção em tribunal, mas o outro grupo foi autorizado a chamar-se The Original Surfaris, aparentemente porque se havia formado primeiro.

Devido aos nomes iguais, como já referimos, o caso deu origem a um processo judicial e, no julgamento que se seguiu, o juiz concedeu a uma das bandas, o uso exclusivo de "The Surfaris". No entanto, o juiz também permitiu que a banda de Fullerton poderia continuar sob o nome The Original Surfaris, embora continuassem a ser conhecidos nos vários locais onde tocavam como "The Surfaris".

O título Wheels Shorts-Hot Rods foi assim colocado para que o disco tivesse algum impacto, destaque e sucesso de vendas devido à moda (muito breve) da música “Hot Rod”, um desdobramento do som surf, que surgiu na costa oeste dos EUA. O LP foi lançado quando o grupo The Original Surfaris já se tinha dissolvido. O grupo tinha planeado lançar realmente um LP de música surf em 1963, mas o projecto foi arquivado na sequência da referida acção judicial envolvendo os outros Surfaris.

Entre outubro de 1962 e janeiro de 1963, eles gravaram no estúdio do produtor Tony Hilder uma série de canções escritas por Larry Weed, tais como "Moment of Truth" ou " Delano Soul Beat", entre outras. A faixa " Delano Soul Beat " acabou por ser recuperada neste LP.

Foi no início de 1963 que, enquanto a banda estava em digressão, o tema de surf instrumental "Wipe Out" foi lançado com grande sucesso por todo o país. Este tema foi escrito e realizado por uma outra banda de Glendora, Califórnia, que, como já referimos, também se chamava The Surfaris. 

Depois da moda do hot rod ter ficado para trás, The Original Surfaris começaram a mudar o seu estilo musical, e Jim Tran juntamente com Al Valdez deixaram o grupo. A banda então começou a interpretar mais temas vocais, e soul and blues no seu repertório, acabando por se separar em maio de 1965.

Banda de qualidade respeitável, conseguiram gravar alguns singles obscuros e o LP.

Mais uma excelente compilação ao estilo "Hot Rod". 

O Hot Rod é um estilo musical muito específico, uma espécie de subcultura e que é normalmente apreciado pelos amantes das altas velocidades e das corridas de carros. São essencialmente canções sobre carros “preparados/artilhados” ou sobre a velocidade, sendo um estilo musical semelhante ao da música Surf. Teve um especial impacto no sul da Califórnia. Na década de 60, seguindo a “onda”, um núcleo de talentosos compositores e arranjadores/produtores, especialmente de Los Angeles, começaram a alimentar a “mania”, evidenciando-se entre outros, Brian Wilson dos Beach Boys , Jan Berry de Jan e Dean, Roger Christian (um DJ de KFWB), Usher Gary, Terry Melcher, e Bruce Johnston. Os temas, os grupos e a própria música eram assim uma espécie de subproduto do ambiente geral dessa região onde aconteciam com frequência corridas de carros ilegais (na rua), desde os anos 40, influenciando desse modo o panorama musical. 

Mas naquela época, tal como aconteceu com a surf music , a ascensão do pop/rock, do folk rock e da música de protesto, acabou por fazer submergir o Hot Rod.

Hot Rod City (V/A) - Recorded in 1963. Originally released on Vault (104). 

The original LP version of Hot Rod City was performed by two basic groups of surf and hot-rod musicians operating under three names. The Grand Prix and the Quads were conceived by songwriter-producer Richard Delvy, and the Customs were conceived by songwriter-producer Gary Usher. This 1995 reissue adds eight additional songs and alternate takes, including two previously-unreleased tracks by Delvy's main band, The Challengers. The members of the Challengers also formed the core of The Grand Prix and The Quads.

More big names - Gary Usher, Richard Delvy, and others - hiding under little pseudonyms - The Grand Prix, the Customs and others - in a chrome-headered collection rightfully rescued from the crusher by the bespectacled historians at Sundazed. This release includes the alternate take bonus tracks "Candy Apple Buggy", "Goin' 88", "Nifty '50", "Hot Rod City", "Competition Coupe", and also a few tracks that weren't included on the original album; "She Rides With Me", "The Blonde In The 406" and "Little Queenie".

Gary Usher and Richard Delvy, flush from their success with the top-ten album Shut Down (which they produced), was asked by Vault Records to try and duplicate that success on their label. Vault had already contracted surf-rock band The Challengers to play on the tracks, but never having written car tunes before, Usher was brought in to lend an authentic touch.
Given three fictional group names to work with - The Customs, The Quads, The Grand Prix, and the aforementioned backing group, The Challengers, Usher also brought in friends Dick Burns (The Hondells), Paul Johnson, Bobby Hart, Paul Johnson, Dennis McCarthy and others to quickly shape an album of hot rod tunes in order to strike while the iron was hot. The resulting album, Hot Rod City, while no masterpiece, captures the raw energy of the drag-racing circuit, and includes several songs of interest to Beach Boys fans. Included are the previous Usher compositions "RPM", a cover of Chuck Berry's "Maybelline," and three Beach Boys songs, "Little Deuce Coupe," "Shut Down," and "409." In comparison with the originals by the Beach Boys, these covers are pretty weak, with the vocalists unable to match the harmonies and vocal prowess of Brian Wilson, and Co., but otherwise are competently played. Other songs, like "Competition Coupe" with a miscast lead vocal by keyboardist Dennis McCarthy, fail completely, but other songs, namely "Nifty '50" and "'54 Corvette," are fun slices of mid-sixties Americana.

One of those classic Surf And Hot Rod albums! featuring the "Wrecking Crew". 

Named after a popular L.A. car club of the time, the Knights were not an actual band, but yet another pseudonym for the studio group masterminded by surf and hot rod producerGary Usher. Usher utilized the best studio players of the day, who also worked with the Beach Boys and Jan & Dean, including Tommy Tedesco, Glen Campbell, Leon Russell, Frank Capp, Ray Pohlman, Hal Blaine, and Jerry Cole. Originally issued on Capitol in July 1964, Hot Rod High combined revved-up hot rod themes ("Midnight Auto," "Three Wheeler," "Hot Rod U.S.A."), high-school hijinks ("Ditch Day," "Skippin' School," Chuck Berry's "School Days"), and cover versions of "Be True to Your School," "Rock Around the Clock," and "I Get Around." As Beatlemania was in full bloom, Gary Usher and crew were still cranking out these platters, just as the British Invasion would deem them passé and drastically change the musical landscape. While the playing time on this disc is only 26:41, in the case of many surf and drag reissues, less is more.

Gary Usher - Hot Rod U.S.A. (1960/1965)

This release collects 30 tunes (mostly hot rod & surf) that Usher had a hand in as producer and/or performer between 1960 and 1965, most taken from rare collector 45s. While there are occasional touches of Buddy Holly, girl groups, or The Four Seasons, it sounds like nothing as much as a collection of Beach Boys/Jan & Dean outtakes from the early '60s. That's not to say, though, that they're on par with the average early Beach Boys albums; it's pretty innocuous (if not downright formulaic) stuff, and after a while you might start to wish it was The Beach Boys and not so relentlessly lightweight. Some of the better tracks are actually the ones on which he and/or his studio charges eschew the sub-Beach Boy approach altogether for raunchy, reverb-soaked surf instrumentals. This set includes some rare, virtually unknown cuts that Brian Wilson himself co-wrote, by the likes of The Super Stocks, the Timers, and Rachel & the Revolvers, but its appeal is really limited to surf/Beach Boy fanatics.
