Johnny and His Cellar Rockers foi a primeira banda do guitarrista holandês Jan Akkerman, formada em 1963. Também contou com Pierre van der Linden, que mais tarde se juntou a Akkerman na formação de The Hunters [NL] e Focus.
A banda fez versões de muitas músicas, incluindo "Sukiyaki" e "A Picture of You".

Jan Ackerman é um excelente guitarrista, compositor e arranjador holandês. Nos anos 70 foi membro de um grande e famoso grupo, “Focus”, autor de magníficas obras a solo, tendo participado em vários projectos musicais interessantes, ou como guitarrista de concertos.
Jan Akkerman nasceu em 24 de dezembro de 1946, em Amsterdão. Aos 8 anos de idade, Jan começou a estudar viola e recebeu uma bolsa de estudos no Amsterdam Music Lyceum. Aos 12 anos, tocava com a sua primeira banda, Johnny and The Cellar Rockers que já incluía o baterista Pierre Van Der Linden, futuro companheiro de Jan noutras bandas.
Jan Akkerman, fundou o grupo Johnny and his Cellar Rockers que incluía, para além de Jan Akkerman e o seu irmão Cocky, Pierre van der Linden na bateria, mais tarde acompanhado por Cor Engelsma (baixo) e Jan Burgers (guitarra ritmo).
The Cellar Rockers tocaram pela primeira vez sem vocalista. O grupo não precisava porque interpretava rock instrumental, um género musical muito popular na época, ao estilo dos Shadows. A banda rapidamente se tornou muito popular em Amesterdão e arredores.
No final dos anos 50, o jovem guitarrista também participou no The Friendship Sextet e, nos anos 60, apresentou-se também como líder de The Hunters, uma banda que tocava principalmente versões.
Johnny And His Cellar Rockers conseguiu um contrato de gravação com a Philips e lançou o seu primeiro single instrumental "Exodus" / "Melody In F Rock", pela Decca. "Blue Tango" / "Una Aventura Mas" foram as primeiras edições em 1962. Jan também começou a tocar o seu próprio material com a banda Johnny and his Cellar Rockers, e lançou posteriormente, mais composições.
Pierre van der Linden foi substituído, em 1962, por Sydney Wachtel. Os membros do grupo entenderam que estava na hora de evoluir e inovar. A música instrumental estava em declínio e por isso, decidiram experimentar um novo género musical, o “beat”. A música "All My Loving", escrita por John Lennon e Paul McCartney, serviu de base para mais um single que era composto por duas músicas, “Close Your Eyes” e “Be-Bop A-Lula, lançado pela Decca holandesa, em 1964.
Em 1965, Jan Akkerman e a sua banda decidiram mudar o nome para" Johnny and the Hunters", que rapidamente se transformou em "The Hunters ". Nesta fase, surgiram alterações à formação do conjunto.
The Hunters era também, assim como os "Cellar Rockers", um grupo de apoio a vários outros vocalistas principais, como a cantora americana Peggy March, em 1966.
