Este é o segundo álbum de estúdio da banda de rock americana The Beau Brummels. Lançado em agosto de 1965, o álbum contém alguns êxitos que chegaram ao top 40 dos EUA. O álbum foi produzido por Sylvester Stewart, mais tarde conhecido como Sly Stone. O Volume 2, ao contrário do álbum de estreia da banda, “Introducing the Beau Brummels”, não teve tanto sucesso comercial, para além de uma fraca distribuição e promoção do material da banda.

A sua formação original era composta por, Sal Valentino (vocalista), Ron Elliott (guitarra solo), Ron Meagher (guitarra baixo), Declan Mulligan (guitarra ritmo, baixo e harmónica) e John Petersen (bateria).

No início o grupo interpretava pop/rock próprio da época. No entanto, tinham uma forte influência do folk rock. E como a maioria das bandas americanas desse estilo, com o tempo foram desenvolvendo uma sonoridade que acabou por dar origem ao country rock.

Em 1968, já reduzido a um trio, The Beau Brummels sofreu mais um desfalque. O baixista Ron Meagher abandonou o grupo, mas os elementos remanescentes, Sal Valentino e o guitarrista e compositor Ron Elliott mantiveram-se em actividade, enveredando por um estilo mais country.

O seu principal período de actividade decorreu entre 1964 e 1969. Mais tarde, com nova formação, The Beau Brummels, reuniram-se na metade da década seguinte (1974-1975) para um revival sem o brilho criativo que marcou a sua carreira nos anos 60.

Voltaram a reunir-se depois, em 2013.

The Beau Brummels - Triangle (1967)

The Beau Brummels were an American rock band. Formed in San Francisco in 1964, the band's original lineup included Sal Valentino (lead vocals), Ron Elliott (lead guitar), Ron Meagher (bass guitar), Declan Mulligan (rhythm guitar, bass, harmonica), and John Petersen (drums). They were discovered by local disc jockeys who were looking to sign acts to their new label, Autumn Records, where Sylvester Stewart—later known as Sly Stone—produced the group's early recording sessions. Initially, the band's musical style blended beat music and folk music and typically drew comparisons to The Beatles, while their later work incorporated other music genres such as psychedelic rock and country rock. 

The Beau Brummels hit it big in the early 60s with their hits “Laugh Laugh” and “Just A Little” which were produced by Sly of the Family Stone. As English as they tried to appear, they were an American rock band hailing from San Fransisco. 

I wholeheartedly recommend that you check out their early material, especially a record called From The Vaults, but it’s their adventurous and refreshing 1967 Triangle that steals the show. Sal Valentino is the voice of the Brummels, a vox of raw power and vibrato, certainly a highly unique voice that matches an almost unclassifiable and surprising album. Triangle has everything: it’s a tightly produced country record that is rooted in rock; it’s straight and folky and underlined by psychedelic imagery. 

The production always drew me in on these records. By records, I mean, if you like this one, you’re in luck because there’s also Bradley’s Barn, a sequel of sorts to Triangle that was recorded in Nashville with some exceptional picking and production. Sometimes modern music can sound over produced – Bradley’s Barn and Triangle are like that, but in an inviting, interesting way, rather than a glossy, manufactured way. 

Merle Travis’ “Nine Pound Hammer” is masterfully covered on this record, the most inventive version I’ve heard and one that always catches bluegrass audiences by surprise. Songs like the excellent “Magic Hollow,” “The Wolf of Velvet Fortune,” and “Painter of Women” are songs you’ll never hear anywhere near a record deemed “country.” Other’s, like Randy Newman’s “Old Kentucky Home” and “Are You Happy?” are straight up good timers. 

Pick this one up, it may take a little getting used to, but it’s well worth it. The Beau Brummels are a seriously underrated treasure. Note to Beau Brummel fans: you’ll be wanting this.
