Sassy. Gay. Republican ... Hypocrite.

For some reason, about a year ago, 21-year-old Alex Newman Mesa decided to switch political parties; he even went so far as to create a new Twit-name for himself: Sassy Gay Republican.

And then he began sharing his thoughts, er, thought, on Twitter, mostly the one he had criticizing the Affordable Care Act mandate that everyone have health insurance:
“I'm conservative because if democrats can force us all to pay for health insurance, what else will they force us to pay for?”
And because he’s such a rightwingnut, and gay, to boot, some of his posts have gone viral; but on September 12 he posted something that went viral in ways he didn’t expect.

Sassy Gay Republican Alex Newman posted that he was in a serious crash while working as a pizza-delivery driver and went to the hospital:
"The hospital they sent me to didn't take my insurance, so now I'm having second thoughts about not having free healthcare cause this is bad."
Oops. Wasn’t it just a few months earlier Alex blasted the idea of the ACA and now he’s lamenting it? And so what does a hypocrite do: he created a GoFundMe page and begged people to help him pay his bills.

But then a few days later, he Tweeted that Worker’s Compensation would cover his hospital visit but that his car insurance would not be covering the collision:
"Guys (please) pray for me during this rough time. Really didn't plan on insurance bailing on me. I'll see what God wants me to do."
Oh, the hypocrisy; a Republican, and an ACA opponent whining about his insurance coverage and asking for donations, and then asking for donations to buy himself a new car; oh, but he did.

And because he’s such a polarizing figure and hypocrite, Twitter came for Alex Newman accusing him of making up the accident, using old photos that weren't his, and being a fraud.

Newman said he received death threats, including comments from people telling him to kill himself or saying they hope that he can "never walk again."

Now, that’s not nice but let’s look into this horrific crash ...

The Arizona Department of Public Safety [DPS] confirmed there was a crash involving three vehicles at Loop 202 and milepost 25 on September 12, but would not confirm who was involved.

Newman says he was entering Loop 202 and was distracted by a nearby car on fire when he slammed into the vehicle in front of him at 65 mph.

DPS reports that no one in the crash was taken to a hospital, and now Alex Newman says he decided to go to the hospital later that day after developing pain in his lower back. Newman has proof his car was towed, he has proof he was ticketed for speeding, and proof he got pain meds the night of the accident.

But still, it must have been a horrible accident because he was scarcely able to get out of his car and photographing the vehicle and then Tweet about it before going home:

And then, later that night, Tweeting about how he was lucky to be alive after an accident he very clearly walked away from:

And he now says that—because he has insurance through his parents—his Tweets about insurance were for his car, and that he’ll use the GoFundMe money to buy himself a new vehicle:
"I did just use the donation money to buy myself another car so I can get working again," he said.
Wait. The Tweets were about car insurance? Then do tell Alex, why the first Tweet awas about the hospital not taking your insurance ... unless you were trying to use your car insurance?

Newman raised about $3,000 online from 125 people, some of whom donated just so they could comment:
"We're just trying to point out the irony of your life choices, but we're still giving you money — money that you need because you don't understand how insurance works."—This man gave $5
Newman says he created the fundraiser to cover potential medical costs, though, since he is improving, he isn't expecting to need physical therapy:
"I feel like if I ask from the government, I feel like I’m stealing in a sense because when it comes to the government, people are being forced to pay into things they might not agree with or want to do.”
And so he used the internet to beg from strangers. Oh, and it’s not the first time Alex Newman used a money beg for help; he also created a GoFundMe page a few years back to help him go to rehab.

Alex Newman doesn’t believe in the ACA, especially when he can stay off Obamacare and use MamaAndPapacare or beg for coins from strangers.

On This Date In ISBL History: Nick Comes Out, Gets Kicked Out, And Then Guess What Happened?

As I am in Oregon helping my Dad recuperate from knee surgery, I thought I’d do something I’ll call “On This Date In ISBL History” and repost some things from back when the blog was new, and newish … this was originally published November 6, 2013:

It’s long been said that members of the LGBT community often create new families for themselves out of friends and lovers that they meet along the way. We do this because, sometimes, our own families want nothing to do with us when we come out to them.

I was one of the lucky ones for my family was mostly, Um, okay? So what?

Carlos, on the other hand wasn’t so lucky. His mother accepts him as a gay man, and accepts me as his partner, but his father wants nothing to do with him; or me. So Carlos made a new family out of friends he made when he moved to Miami and friends we both made when we moved to Smallville. And he stills gets choked up that my sister calls him ‘brother’ and my father calls him ‘son,’ and all my nieces call him Uncle Carlos.

So, as LGBT men and women, we make do, and we build new families to take the place of our birth families that no longer want us when we come out.

That’s the case with Nick. Nick is an 18-year-old young man, a freshman at Kennesaw State University, who lives in Marietta, Georgia. Last month someone he knew told Nick’s parents that he is bisexual and they weren’t having it. They kicked him out of the house; while he was at work, they took the car that was in their name, even though he made the payments on it; they took all of his belongings from their house and threw them on the front lawn.

Bad? Not even bad enough. They then used the fact that his bank accounts were "custodial accounts" and they emptied his bank accounts into theirs; taking all the money he’d saved over the last three years working as a bagger at Publix.

Lovely parents; role models, really.

But Nick didn’t give up, and people who knew him didn’t give up either. The mother-in-law of Steve Bevers, one of his co-workers, took Nick into her home instantly, and set up a crowdfunding page on GoFundMe to help him on with his life.
"When I heard about what happened to Nick I was flabbergasted. I couldn't understand how a parent could do that. While I'm sure there are multiple sides to the story, I just was amazed. I was hurt. The first thing I asked was, 'Does he need a place to stay? Does he need some money?'" — Steve Bevers
So Steve Bevers set up the GoFundMe page for Nick on October 22nd, to help him pay for school, maybe get another car, and finance a place of his own when he’s able. In just a couple of weeks the site has raised $26,000 — as of this morning — for Nick.

Complete strangers, who don’t know Nick, might never know Nick, have stepped up to help him when his own parents told him to get out of their house.

Last week, Nick uploaded a video to the site to thank his supporters and tell his story:
"This whole thing started when my stepmom caught wind of me being bisexual. I don't know where she got her information from, but I know it wasn't from me. She didn't like that and neither did my dad. I got told some very vulgar and disgusting things... That's why I didn't tell them, because I wasn't ready. And I didn't tell them for the exact reaction I was scared about, and that's exactly what happened."
Now, while Nick may be sleeping on the sofa at the Bevers home, he is still working, and planning to continue his education; he’s using the donations to pay for school and get himself a car so he can get back and forth to classes.

Complete strangers did this for him when his own family threw him out of the house.

As I said, we sometimes create new families for ourselves when our own families don’t want us because we’re gay, or something, but in the case of Nick, his new family is made up of people who might never meet him, who realize that just because he’s bisexual doesn’t mean he doesn’t deserve to be loved.

Apparently Nick's father released his own version of what happened in their family and tried to paint Nick as “the bad guy” in all of this because Nick had the nerve to consult an attorney about getting the money back that his parents stole from him.

Nick was a straight A student in high school, and has done very well in college, all the while working nearly full time.

Yeah, he sounds like a bad guy. Or maybe just a young bisexual man trying to make his way through life after his family disowned him.

PS Naturally, the GoFundMe page, while still up, is done; Nick accepted donations just to pay for college and housing and plans to pay it forward.

Random Musings

So, anti-abortion activist Randall Terry is claiming that he has been receiving death threats from someone in a Texas town not far from the Geller shootings:

"Coincidence? God knows."

And so now, because it’s the new ‘It’ thing to do, Terry has started a GoFundMe to raise $200,000 to protect himself and his family from these Muslims.

Seriously? A money beg?

Sidenote: I was flipped off the other day by a hillbilly in a pickup, so I’ve started my own GoFundMe page to help raise some money for therapy to get over it; and by ‘therapy,’ I mean tequila so I only need about thirty bucks … Help me!
This is rich …

There’s an outbreak of Chlamydia at a high school in the Crane Independent School District in Texas that has forced administrators to send a warning notes home to parents. As of now, there are twenty reported cases of the STD, meaning that 1 in 15 students at the school is infected.

Talk about an STD Petri dish, but I digress …

What’s really rich about this story is that the high school offers a three-day sexual education course once a year that emphasizes abstinence but that Crane ISD "does not offer a curriculum in human sexuality.

So they don’t tell kids how to protect themselves should they have sex, they just tell them not to have sex, and then keep their STD doctors on speed dial when the Chlamydia Outbreak occurs.
Well, this week, after returning from Miami, we took Carlos’ car in to have that pesky engine light checked and it turned out that it was a bad gas cap that affected the sensors in the gas tank and flicked on the light. But then my car needed some servicing, too, after having 1500 miles put on her in a week, and so she went in for some new rotors and pads — whatever that means — and that was another added expense.

Then there was MaxGoldberg.

One night, while getting ready to go to sleep, Max came onto the bed and sat by my head. He kept twisted his head and licking the inside of his mouth — if you’ve ever seen Grimm and seen a hexenbiest change, you know how Max looked.

Well, I thought nothing about it; food caught in his teeth maybe, but the next morning, after his breakfast, he was still doing it, and then drooling a lot, and then drooling blood. Off the vet — funny side note: MaxGoldberg in the cat carrier, howling so loudly that he sounded like a police siren — and it was determined that one of Max’s fangs had bent and every time he closed his mouth it was gutting his tongue and gums; it was also determined that the other fang was loose and might do the same damage.

Now, MaxGoldberg is fang-less; healing nicely, but fang-less.

Other Sidenote: how lucky am I to have Carlos because the vet called with the diagnosis and the cost of tooth extraction and sedation and blahblahblah and quoted a price well over $700! Carlos shrieked, and said he wouldn’t pay that and in an instant the price suddenly dropped to a hair over $400.

I would have never thought to bargain; I would have forked over my credit card and then maybe thought about not eating for a month to pay that bill.

Four-hundred is still a lot of money, but Max is one of our babies and well worth it.
So, I love me some BBC America, and this week I tuned into Ripper Street, sort of a police procedural that takes place in Whitechapel, in London, around the time of Jack Attacks.

Now, the show isn’t about The Ripper, just about that area, but it does star a couple of hotties: Matthew Macfadyen as Detective Inspector Edmund Reid, and Adam Rothenberg as Captain Homer Jackson, a flamboyantly dressing American doctor.

So far one episode in, I’m liking the show and, as always, the Man Candy.
Another MaxGoldberg Sidenote:

I was still at work when Carlos picked Max up that night, but I called home to see how he was doing. No answer. I figured they weren’t home yet, so I waited and called another time …

Well, actually, I called nine times in forty-five minutes.

Carlos wondered if I would call the house that mush if it was him coming home from the hospital.

I wondered about that, too …
I’m just gonna say it: People are stupid.

I mean, how else do you explain that when the story broke that an aide to New Jersey Governor Chris Christie was pleading guilty in Bridge Gate that all hell would break loose because of the headline:

“Christie Ally Expected To Plead Guilty”

Twitter exploded with the news that Kirstie Alley was going to jail.

Seriously; people are dumb.
Well, I kinda already knew this …

Irish men have just been voted the Sexiest Men In The World according to MissTravel.com, a US-based travel and dating website.

In second place, but trailing by over 1,000 votes were Australians, followed by Pakistani men, American men and English men.

I could ‘a told y’all that … case in point:

First we had Marco Rubio announcing his run at the White House with an ode to Game of Thrones and now Scott Walker is channeling a little Star Wars — dubbing himself Scottwalker — as he readies for his ill-fated campaign.

Seriously? Grown-assed men, running for the highest office in the land, channeling TV shows as their jump-off point?

Grow the eff up already.
Carlos and I are being sued. Oy! And, well, it seriously looks like we’re going to lose because the facts in the case are irrefutable: we’re homosexuals.

See, an Omaha woman, sixty-six-year-old Sylvia Driskell, who says she is an ambassador for God and the Baby Jeebus, is suing all homosexuals and is asking a federal judge to decide whether homosexuality is a sin.

Driskell contends “that homosexuality is a sin and that they [The Homosexuals] know it is a sin” because “why else would they have been hiding in the closet(?)”

Oh lordy, someone needs to lay hands on this woman and it looks like it is that federal judge, John Gerrad, because he has refused to allow Sylvia to be a legal spokestool for God and his son, Jesus Christ.

Whoosh! Time to put that cash back in the bank accounts!
