Good News Friday: Oklahoma Homophobe Sally Kern Is Outed ... From Office

Sally Kern, The Grand Homophobe of Oklahoma, has been outed.

Um, from office, I mean. Due to term limits, the bigot cannot run for office as a state representative anymore and so she’s out. And, even better, is the party that Freedom Oklahoma, an LGBT advocacy group, is throwing to honor the fact that Kern is out.

The Freedom Oklahoma party, dubbed “Farewell Sally”, will take place on May 24th in Oklahoma City and will not only celebrate Sally kern leaving office — hopefully for good — but will also cheer the deaths of several anti-LGBT bills that were pending in the Oklahoma House but are now kaput.

Troy Stevenson, executive director of Freedom Oklahoma:

“We picked [Sally] for very obvious reasons. She said some pretty atrocious things about the LGBT community. I don’t know that any legislator in this country has said worse.”

All the monies raised from the $35-a-ticket event will be used to fund the Freedom Oklahoma’s attempts to recruit political candidates who believe in equality, balancing the budget, funding education.

Toby Jenkins, executive director of Oklahomans for Equality in Tulsa:

“I can tell you all LGBTQ Oklahomans look forward to Rep. Sally Kern’s last day in public office. She has given 12 years of constant attack against gay, lesbian and transgender Oklahomans. She believes what she believes, and she is not even open to the idea that she might possibly be wrong.”

Sally Kern made national headlines in 2008 when she said this about The Gays, and the ALLEGED “homosexual agenda”:

"Studies show that no society that has totally embraced homosexuality has lasted more than, you know, a few decades. So it's the death knell of this country. I honestly think it's the biggest threat our nation has, even more so than terrorism or Islam — which I think is a big threat, okay? 'Cause what's happening now is they are going after, in schools, two-year olds...And this stuff is deadly, and it's spreading, and it will destroy our young people, it will destroy this nation!"

But it’s not just The Gays she has issues with, it’s women and minorities, because she also said this:

“Women usually don't want to work as hard as a man... women tend to think a little bit more about their family, wanting to be at home more time, wanting to have a little more leisure time.”

“We have a high percentage of blacks in prison, and that’s tragic, but are they in prison just because they are black or because they don’t want to study as hard in school? I’ve taught school, and I saw a lot of people of color who didn’t study hard because they said the government would take care of them.”

In addition, she authored several unsuccessful bills in 2015 that would have allowed businesses to refuse service to gay people and would have attempted to nullify a U.S. Supreme Court decision legalizing same-sex marriage.

So, not only are The Gays happy to see her go, but I imagine the black community and most women are also thrilled that … and I’ve been waiting to sing this …

Oklahoma Sets A New Record For Anti-LGBT Discrimination

I’m thinking of moving to Oklahoma, or, as I like to think of it, Oklahomo, after reading this week about a slate of new bills the state legislature is considering.

See, it looks like Oklahomo has no gun violence problem, no environmental issues, no economic concerns, no health troubles; it looks like it’s all good in Oklahomo, which is why I’ve suggested to Carlos that we move …except …

Since they have no other pressing issues in the state, the Oklahomo state legislature is preparing a slew of anti-LGBT measures because, well, it’s The Gays you know. In fact, Oklahomo has bested Texas for the most anti-LGBT measures before its legislature — there were 23 Hate Bills in the Lone Star state last year, but Oklahomo has some 26 pieces of hate pending:

HJR 1059 skips the committee process and doesn’t require the governor’s signature, but if approved by voters, it would amend the state constitution to allow any religious organization, private business, or individual to refuse to recognize any same-sex marriage and to be legally allowed to refuse to provide services and not be sued for discrimination. In addition, it guarantees that child-placing agencies would never be required to place a child with a family if it violated their religious beliefs.

HB 3044, proposed by anti-LGBT loon Sally Kern, bans school counselors, therapists, administrators, or teachers from providing students with guidance or information about “human sexuality” without notifying their parents, thus outing LGBT and LGBTQ students.

SB 1014 makes it illegal for a person to use a gender-specific restroom when that person’s biological gender is contrary to that of the gender-specific restroom.

HB 3049 bans transgender students from using sex-segregated facilities in accordance with their gender identities.

SB 1323 threatens school districts’ state aid if they accommodate a trans student; the only way a district could save its funding would be to reverse the policy and/or force trans students to use single-occupancy facilities.

SB 21 allows students to express religious viewpoints at any school event; the bill runs counter to anti-bullying policies that protect LGBT students if the bully claims that expressing their homophobic views was protected religious speech.

HB 1598 actually makes it illegal to ban ex-gay therapy.

HB 1371 says the state has no compelling interest in forcing anyone to “participate in any marriage ceremony, celebration, or other related activity or to provide items or services for such purposes against the person’s religious beliefs.”

SB 898 updates RFRA with provisions that make it clear that religious businesses can discriminate, even if it means violating local nondiscrimination practices.

SB 440 expands the definition of “religious entity” to include a privately-held business operating with a sincerely held religious belief.

SB 1289 says no municipality can pass a law that goes beyond what is set by state law, including the passage of LGBT anti-discrimination laws.

SB 1328 ensures that no individual would ever have to provide any service “used in a marriage ceremony or celebration of a specific lifestyle or behavior, or to promote, advertise, endorse or advocate for a specific marriage, lifestyle or behavior.”

HB 1597 is another piece of Sally Kern Hate and states that no business shall be required to provide any services, accommodations, advantages, facilities, goods or privileges related to any LGBT person, group or association.

HR 1032 says that “natural marriage” between one man and one woman remains the law, regardless of any court decision — screw you, SCOTUS — to the contrary, and demands that the Attorney General to defend against marriage equality.

SB 973 prevents the government from funding the “licensing or support of same-sex marriage.” So, a county clerk issues a license for a same-sex couple to legally marry, he or she would no longer receive a salary.

SB 805 is another version of the “Preservation of Sovereignty and Marriage Act” that was introduced last year.

HB 1599, another version of the “Preservation of Sovereignty and Marriage Act” cuts off administrative support for same-sex marriage without technically banning it.

SB 811 ensures that ministers can officiate marriages even if they oppose the requirement of a state-issued marriage license.

SB 733 requires marrying couples to undergo a blood test to prove they do not have communicable syphilis or any other communicable disease; if a physician identifies a disease that is communicable — and that includes HIV, HPV and even the flu — the couple cannot obtain a marriage license.

SB 724 establishes covenant marriage — one man and one woman — in which couples undergo premarital counseling and accept limited conditions for divorce.

SB 478 guarantees that no individual or religious entity would ever have to recognize a same-sex couple’s marriage or provide any service related to that union if it violated their religious beliefs.

HB 1663, more Sally Kern Hate, creates a new section of law not to be codified in the state code called the “Marriage Act of Oklahoma.”

Wow, it’s all hate in Oklahoma it seems, though there is one tiny pinprick of light in one bill — yes, just the one — that actually does some good for LGBT people:

HB 1345 would create statewide employment protections on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, though it does not take up housing or public accommodations.

Really, Oklahomo? There is nothing else going on in your state you’re your elected officials have the time to create twenty-six pieces of proposed legislation, all of to allow discrimination of LGBT citizens? Is this what you want Oklahomo?

I don’t believe you do, and even if you do, are you willing to pay, via your taxes, when the state is sued by LGBT citizens, and the United States of America, for discrimination? That’s what will happen. And if you’re fine with your tax dollars going to pay off your state’s legal debts then sit tight and allow discrimination to become the law of the land.

But remember, those people allowing discrimination today are the very people who might face discrimination tomorrow, and who will stand up for you?

Carlos: “What was that show we liked?”

Carlos: “I don’t know. It was funny …”

Bob: “Was Kathy Griffin in it?”

Bob: “Then why are you mentioning her?”
Carlos: ‘We like her and the show reminds me of her.”

So down there in Florida, the House of Representatives just erases language banning gay adoption from its laws!

Big step, right? Woo hoo, right?

Um, not exactly see, the court ruled that banning gay adoption was illegal five years ago but Florida legislators just now got around d to rewording the law. The full bill still needs a House vote, but it has wide support; the Senate and Governor Rick Scott would then also have to approve it before the gay-adoption language is deleted from law.

But Florida Republicans, via House Speaker Steve Crisafulli want you to know that they aren’t fans of The Gays adopting:

"Philosophically, I've never really been there on that, but I'm somebody who operates under the letter of the law. I recognize that this has been taking place for five years, so our bill is going to reflect that."

What he means is that, while most Republicans are still against gay couples adopting children, they're just acknowledging they must abide by the law … five years after it was changed.

So, um, Alaska’s most famous unwed mother, Bristol Palin, is getting married. Palin announced the engagement on social media because, well, that’s how the Palin’s roll.

Her future husband is Sgt Dakota Meyer.

So … she’ll be Bristol Meyer.

And I’m dying over this:

Matt Bomer, my Husband-In-My-Head, whom I watched regularly on White Collar before it ended its run last fall, is returning to TV in, wait for it, American Horror Story: Hotel!

Plus, fellow hottie, and also fellow openly gay actor, Cheyenne Jackson, is also joining the show next season.

Well, some good news out of Oklahoma … a bill introduced to the Oklahoma State House by wacknut Representative, and Republican, Sally Kern that would have legalized anti-LGBT therapy died without coming to a vote.

Now, if Oklahoma could get its act together on other LGBT issues … and get Kern out of office … well, that would be great.

I love Broadchurch, a mystery on BBC America. I began watching last year and while I enjoyed it, it seemed to move a little too slow.

Now it’s back, with a continuation of last year’s story, with a totally new story thrown in.

What hasn’t changed is that Andrew Buchan, left, and Jonathan Bailey, right, are still on the show and are giving me a healthy dose of Man Candy with my murder mystery, court case drama.

Some funny stuff happened at a panel for American Horror Story: Freak Show—besides the Bomer casting news. Jessica Lange once again confirmed that she will not be returning to the series:

 “Yes, I’m done. We’ve had a great run here. I mean, I absolutely love doing these four characters, and in all the madness, I love the writers and Ryan (Murphy) and the insanity of shooting it.”

But the best part was when someone in the audience asked Lange if Lady Gaga joining the cast might make her want to return for another season and she said:

“What does that mean?”

Nothing beats Jessica Lange shade.

A Pair of Oklahoma Asshats

Boy oh boy, the Republicans in Oklahoma really hate The Gays. I mean, how else do you explain the sudden rash of anti-gay, anti-marriage equality legislation that is being proposed by just two of Oklahoma’s wingnuts?

First up, we have Republican state Congressman Todd Russ who says he wants to protect court clerks from having to issue licenses to same-sex couples because, well, gay, and doesn’t want these clerk to have to condone or facilitate same-sex marriages.

Well, Todd, let me make this queer: doing your job by issuing a marriage licenses — or baking a cake or arranging flowers for that matter — is not condoning same-sex marriages, it doing the job for which you were hired and paid; and don’t get me started that there is not a single gay couple anywhere in the world who asked to have their marriage “condoned” by a court clerk or baker or florist. Plus, doing your job doesn’t facilitate same-sex marriage; it just means that you did your job. And if you choose not to do your job, kindly quit and find some job in Haterville that suits your bigoted needs and let someone who will perform the job for which they were hired do it. M’kay?

But, even better than that, under Todd Russ’ plan, you won’t be married when the state says you’re married; you’ll be legally wed when a “religious official” signs your marriage certificate. Then that official would file the license with the clerk.

But what about religious officials who don’t hate, Todd; those pastors and ministers and priests and rabbis who wish to perform same-sex marriages? Are those then legal, or are they still denied because a court clerk hates The Gays? And if that’s the case, then your new law makes no sense; you are allowing religion to dictate law and that ain’t how we work in America.

Russ goes on to say that marriages “are not supposed to be a government thing anyway.” But they are, Todd, they are; and I would suggest that, if you’re married, and I’m unsure about that because you have a bad case of Gay Face, you begin my having your legal marriage annulled, and then find a preacher to marry you and the missus. You want the laws changed, Toddy, you get the ball rolling.

Russ also makes note of the fact that the people of Oklahoma voted, and yes, by an overwhelming margin, back in 2004, for a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage and he hates that a judge, a judge, y’all, decided that treating gay people as less than in Oklahoma was wrong, and reversed that vote in October 2014. He’s apparently unaware that times, and minds, have changed from 2004 to 2014, for most everyone in the country except people like Todd Russ …

And Sally Kern. She’s another wingnut Republican Oklahoma state Representative, and she wants to go Todd Russ one, well, two better, by filing three measures aimed at the LGBT community. Kern, as you may recall, is infamous for saying that the, ahem, “Homosexual Agenda” was destroying the nation and posed a bigger threat to the nation than terrorism. Uh huh, yes she did. Of course, she had no proof, no reasonable argument, to back up her claims, but as bigots do, they just spout hate and call it truth.

First up is House Bill 1599, AKA the “Preservation and Sovereignty of Marriage Act.” House Bill 1599 says that no taxpayer funds or governmental salaries can be used for the licensing or support of same-sex marriage.

Again, Sally, we don’t need your support, we need you to do your job. And as taxpayers, we expect to be treated as all taxpayers and if you don’t want us to get married, Old Girl, get thee to a divorce court and end your marriage, too.

Then we have House Bill 1598 or the “Freedom to Obtain Conversion Therapy Act” which would allow parents to seek counseling and therapy to change a gay child’s sexual orientation without interference from the state.

Meaning a religious wingnut parent could force their child into therapy for being gay; and if we learned anything from Leelah Alcorn — and so many others — who killed themselves after being forced into reparative therapies, we learned that they don’t work, and all they do is damage young people, making them feel even more unloved, unliked and less than.

Last of all is House Bill 1597, a measure to allow businesses to refuse to provide services to the gay community, among others AKA “It’s OK to be a Bigot in OK.” It which would allow businesses to refuse service “to any lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender person, group or association,” and be immune from civil liability.

It’s really just a law that allows people to use their religion to deny services to an American citizen. But, does Sally think … and I’ll stop there for a moment because she clearly does not … that her little bill would allow, say, a Christian baker to refuse service to a Muslim customer; or vice versa? And, if I’m, say, an agnostic, can I use that to deny services to a religious couple or group?

What’s good for the Bigot Goose, Sally …

How is it possible, even in Oklahoma, that rational people — and I’m sure some Oklahomans are rational — look at these two morons who, with all that’s facing their state, devote any of their time to seeking to deny rights to the LGBT people, to allow LGBTQ youth to be forced into a therapy that reinforces an outdated notion that they are somehow damaged, that want to take marriage away from the government and give it to the churches but then make the state follow the law of the church.

We don’t do that in America; not even in Oklahoma.

President Barack Obama, on ENDA: 

"As a result, millions of LGBT Americans go to work every day fearing that, without any warning, they could lose their jobs — not because of anything they've done, but simply because of who they are. ... It's offensive. It's wrong. And it needs to stop, because in the United States of America, who you are and who you love should never be a fireable offense. ...  Americans ought to be judged by one thing only in their workplaces: their ability to get their jobs done. Does it make a difference if the firefighter who rescues you is gay -- or the accountant who does your taxes, or the mechanic who fixes your car? If someone works hard every day, does everything he or she is asked, is responsible and trustworthy and a good colleague, that's all that should matter."

It can’t get any simpler.

Roger Ross Williams, openly gay documentarian, and creator of the film God Loves Uganda:

"One of the biggest anti-gay pastors invited me to his house for dinner. And I got there and thought, 'Oh my God, this is an ambush.' The pastors who are fighting the spread of homosexuality were all sitting there, not smiling. They pulled out the e-mail and said, 'We know that you are a homosexual.' I was terrified because I'd watched them hold up Bibles and say, 'This book says these people must be killed.' I was silent. 'But, Roger, we're going to help you, we're going to cure you.' They then just started praying over me."

Roger Ross Williams is still gay, proving, yet again, that it cannot be prayed away.

Kerry Washington, on the rumors that she’s a lesbian: 

“It’s interesting how much people long to fill in the gaps when someone in the public eye doesn’t share their personal life. I understand their frustration. I like how people will post pictures of me with other women that I adore, hugging on red carpets, and say, ‘See?’ Are we so uncomfortable with love between two people of the same gender that we immediately label it as sexual? But I’ve never been bothered by the lesbian rumor. There’s nothing offensive about it, so there’s no reason to be offended.”

Another reason why I just loves me some Kerry Washington.

Rob James-Collier, of Downton Abbey, on whether it's easier to kiss men or women on screen:

"I found [kissing men] easier. The way I was thinking was that if you kiss a girl you worry about: 

1) How big her boyfriend is; 

2) Is he in the building watching and is he going to kick the s**t out of you?; and 

3) What is my missus going to think of it? 

So we went to the BFI for a big unveiling on the cinema screen, and the missus knew [the kiss] was coming, and we were all sitting watching it and I thought 'Nice one, she can't accuse me of anything', and the missus turned to me and said 'You've never kissed me like that'."

Love that story!

I find it sad that you seek to impose your moronic viewpoint onto everyone else. That tribe understands love ifs love.

Mike Michaud, Maine Representative, and candidate for Governor, coming out:

“When I entered the race for governor, I did so because I love the state of Maine and am tired of seeing it dragged in the wrong direction. There was never any question that it would be a tough race, but I know I have the vision, the experience and the commitment to lead Maine forward. … Once I jumped to an early lead in the polls, I knew it was only a matter of time before individuals and organizations intent on re-creating the uncertainty that led to our current governor’s election three years ago would start their attacks. … So I wasn’t surprised to learn about the whisper campaigns, insinuations and push-polls some of the people opposed to my candidacy have been using to raise questions about my personal life. They want people to question whether I am gay. … Allow me to save them the trouble with a simple, honest answer: “Yes I am. But why should it matter?”

It shouldn’t, and hopefully the voters in Maine get that.

I Didn't Say It........

Zachary Quinto, writing on his website of how Jamey Rodemeyer's suicide as the result of bullying, was the impetus for his own public coming out:
"when i found out that jamey rodemeyer killed himself - i felt deeply troubled.  but when i found out that jamey rodemeyer had made an it gets better video only months before taking his own life - i felt indescribable despair. i also made an it gets better video last year - in the wake of the senseless and tragic gay teen suicides that were sweeping the nation at the time.  but in light of jamey's death - it became clear to me in an instant that living a gay life without publicly acknowledging it - is simply not enough to make any significant contribution to the immense work that lies ahead on the road to complete equality.  
our society needs to recognize the unstoppable momentum toward unequivocal civil equality for every gay lesbian bisexual and transgendered citizen of this country.  gay kids need to stop killing themselves because they are made to feel worthless by cruel and relentless bullying.  parents need to teach their children principles of respect and acceptance.  we are witnessing an enormous shift of collective consciousness throughout the world.  we are at the precipice of great transformation within our culture and government.  i believe in the power of intention to change the landscape of our society - and it is my intention to live an authentic life of compassion and integrity and action.  jamey rodemeyer's life changed mine.  and while his death only makes me wish that i had done this sooner - i am eternally grateful to him for being the catalyst for change within me.  now i can only hope to serve as the same catalyst for even one other person in this world.  that - i believe - is all that we can ask of ourselves and of each other.

"Recently, when Jamie tried to start a Rainbow Club at his high school to promote acceptance of others, the posters were torn down and he was called vicious names in the hallways and online. We had meetings with officials at the school and were working with them to bring an end to it but Jamie felt it would never stop.
We will not say that the bullying was the only reason for James’s decision to take his own life but it was definitely a factor. As his family and friends or even if you never met him but want to help, we must do whatever we can to wipe out bullying for any reason in our society and especially in our schools. Young people are very vulnerable and have enough pressures in life to have to deal with aside from the stress of being bullied. My family’s wish is that no more families have to suffer the unbearable pain of losing a child. No child should have to deal with depression or feel hated because of their beliefs – that is not the Canadian way of treating others."

How horrible to lose a child, but far worse when you realize that one of the factors that lead to Jamie's suicide--the bullying--could have and should have been stopped.
Schools need a Zero Tolerance policy on bullying.
Bully someone and you're out.

Kelsey Grammer, on how he feels about the Tea Party stance on gay marriage:
"I wouldn't sign on to that. Absolutely. I played several [gay characters]. I guess I'm more Libertarian in that way. I think marriage is up to two people that love each other. And if you find the church that you want to get married in you go right ahead ..In my mind the state of marriage is something that has been endorsed by the idea that it is a sacrament within the context of a faith...the word marriage comes out of the religious side of our experience and our history. So I tend to think our government shouldn't be involved in any way..."

Kelsey's kind of a right-wing douche, but he knows how his bread is buttered.
He works in an industry populated by LGBT men and women, and to come out as a marriage-equality hating teabagger would serve him no good at all.

Kelly Clarkson, on stalking Adele:
"I want to stalk Adele so she'll sing with me. I love her voice and I really want to sing with her. She knows that. We were on 'Divas' together and I cornered her in her room and said, 'I really want to sing with you!' I just love her voice. I saw her performance on the VMAs and the EMAs. All these performers came out and did a great job, but then this girl comes out and she's just standing there with a microphone and there's a piano and she just kills everyone! She was the most memorable act of the night. She's just so talented."

I dunno about the rest of you, but I think Kelly and Adele would sound great together.

"So often people will say someone needs to 'repent' from homosexuality. It is something that actually cannot be repented of! People are, or they are not, homosexual.
