Matt Bevin: America's Worst Governor

Kentucky’s Republican Governor Matt Bevin has once again proven he’s unfit to lead a homeowner’s association, much less an entire state.

During remarks to the Louisville Rotary Club, Bevin responded to a question about what can be done to stem gun violence. He first read the GOP mantra about mental health and firearm safety—as opposed to actual gun control—but then took aim at …wait for it …it’s epic … teachers:

“One thing you almost didn't hear anything about while we had people pretending to be sick when they weren't sick and leaving kids unattended to or in situations that they should not have been in—a little girl was shot, 7 years old, by another kid, because they were somewhere that they weren't intended and because a parent didn't have any option, put them in a situation so that they could go to work, it left these kids in a compromised situation where they encountered a gun and there was not enough awareness."

Bevin seemed to be referencing a March 12 shooting where a 7-year-old girl was shot by her 11-year-old brother inside their home while their guardian, their uncle, was outside. But he didn’t say anything about that, he blamed striking teachers for the death of a child.

Of course, this is not the first time Bevin has claimed teacher protests have put children in harm's way. After a teacher rally in April 2018 shut down dozens of school districts across Kentucky, Bevin told reporters that children were being sexually assaulted or ingesting poisons somewhere in the state because teachers were not in class.

And, of course, as Republican’s tend to do when they put their foot in their mouths, Bevin lashed out at the media for reporting what he … reporting exactly what he said:

"The only thing you all are pumping out there is talking this 7-year-old girl who was shot—really? That's pretty sad. And it's why our state is struggling because we're not focusing on things that are important."

The death of a child by gunshot is unimportant, y’all in Kentucky and so, please remember that your governor—for now, because Bevin, who gleefully praises the NRA for its endorsement is seeking reelection—seems less interested in the death of a child than he is in painting teachers striking for a living wage as the cause of that death.

And it’s ironic, because the first thing NRA-goose-stepping Republicans do when there’s a shooting death in America and people began screaming for stricter gun control, is to shout that this should not be a political issue, and yet here is Matt Bevin doing exactly that.

You don’t politicize the shooting death of a child … of anyone.

Mitch McConnell Screwed America on Gun Control ... All In The Name Of The NRA

So, what did Mitch McConnell, who worships ate the altar of the NRA and keeps his permanently pursed lips pressed tightly to Wayne LaPierre’s sphincter, do in the days following the mass shooting in Orlando, in the days after that fifteen-hour filibuster to demand action on gun control, following that epic 26-hour Democratic sit-in, in regards to the news that ninety-percent of Americans, including Republicans, want some form of gun control?

Well, he covered his ass because it’s an election year and dead Americans don’t matter to Mitch McConnell as much as staying in office and cashing those Blood Checks from the NRA.

Yup, mere minutes after House Democrats ended their historic sit-in to demand that Speaker Paul Ryan allow a vote on gun control, Mitch McConnell let it be known that he was going to allow the Senate to vote on two gun control bills making it look like he was coming down on the side of humanity, of stopping this gun crazed lunacy in the country, of finally doing the right thing for We The People.

Except he didn’t; both bill failed, as McConnell had planned. Now he can shrug and say, “I tried,” and then go back to snogging LaPierre’s bunghole.

McConnell allowed the Senate to vote on Senator Susan Collins’ bipartisan version of the "no fly, no buy" terrorism watch list bill — which the NRA opposes — and he would allow a vote on Senator Ron Johnson’s NRA-endorsed bill; or, at least a bill the NRA didn’t “officially” endorse.

The Collins Bill would also mandate FBI notification if anyone who has been on the terror watch list within the past five years tried to purchase a firearm; the NRA calls that unconstitutional.

The Johnson Bill would mandate that the Department of Justice have a mere three days to find a reason to deny a gun purchase to someone who is or had been on the no fly or terror watch lists; after the wait, and considering no name on the list, the weapons could be purchased.

But since Mitch McConnell serves only Satan, er, Wayne LaPierre, he used a procedural tactic to assure the failure of both bills.

When Collins Bill survived an initial "test" vote — something it was not expected to do — McConnell swung into action and suddenly put both bill up together, thereby splitting the number of votes that the Collins bill could have gotten. And then to make it even more difficult, the Collins Bill vote was not to pass it, but to fail it; in effect, if you voted ‘Yes’ on the Collins Bill it was a vote to fail it.

Yes = Bad.

No = More NRA checks for Mitch McConnell.

The Collins bill got 52 votes, but not the 60 needed to pass, so the Senate, and Mitch McConnell, can say they tried, but the votes just aren't there.

They tried; the GOP tried. But, in effect, what they did was to make it look like they wanted some form of gun control, especially the part about allowing people on a terror watch list buy guns, but what they did was to make sure that fellow Republicans, and NRA goose-stepping, ass-kissing lapdogs, like Senators Ron Johnson, John McCain, Rob Portman, Richard Burr, Roy Blunt and Marco Rubio—who said he was done with the Senate when he was running for president but that was apparently a lie—are up for challenging reelection races this fall.

So, Mitch McConnell never wanted gin control; he wanted to make it look like he wanted gun control, and then he worked to make the NRA-opposed bill, the Collins Bill, fail, so he could save himself and the rest of his GOP cronies and their cushy jobs at the expense of dead Americans.

How you like the GOP now?

Well, then, Vote Them Out.

SC Congressman Mick Mulvaney Wants To Talk Video Games and Movies But Not Guns

Yesterday, in my anger and frustration, I wrote to South Carolina Senators Graham and Scott, as well as Congressman Mick Mulvaney.

So far, only Mulvaney has responded; here's what he said about Orlando:

"June 13, 2016

Dear Mr. Slatten,

Thank you for contacting me regarding gun control in light of the recent tragedy in Orlando, Florida. This is a very important issue and I am glad to hear your thoughts.

As a parent, I cannot even begin to imagine - and indeed, do not want to imagine - the loss the families in Orlando have suffered. My thoughts and prayers have been and will continue to be with the victims' friends and families of this tragedy.

Seeking to lay blame after an inexplicable tragedy is a natural and normal reaction, and such is obviously the case with the recent massacre of the innocents in Orlando, Florida. As we struggle to arrive at explanations for the inexplicable, and to lay blame, I hope we focus first and foremost on the individual responsible. To the extent the discussion moves toward broader societal issues, I hope we look at more than just gun control.

We must, as a nation, be willing to talk about mental health, the glamorization of violent video games and movies, the true cost of broken homes, and the general culture of death that permeates our society. Any attempt to single out our constitutional protections and liberties as a cause of this tragedy would be misplaced.

Yes, as you can see he wants to "talk" about mental health issues ... he worries about violent video games and movies, broken homes.

He DOES NOT think we need do ANYTHING about gun control.

He wants to, what, legislate movies and video games, but not worry about loopholes where anyone can buy an arsenal.

But then a simple 1.3 second Google search reveals that Mick Mulvaney received an A+ rating from the NRA and is an NRA candidate.

No wonder he doesn't worry about gun control or dead Americans.
