They say opposites attract and you don’t get much more opposite than Carlos and me.

Case in point: this morning I woke up at 5:45AM and used the bathroom. I got back in bed and realized I was awake and not going back to sleep so I fed the cats, turned the heat on and paid some bills.

Carlos, on the other hand, awoke at 6:50AM to use the bathroom and then came into the office and asked why I was up. I told him why and then he said, “Well, I’m going back to bed until the alarm goes off.”

That was at 6:56AM and the alarm goes off at 7 AM.

Opposites.

Floridian ... which explains everything ... Cynthia Kelly is suing Hershey because she claims its holiday-themed Reese’s peanut butter candies lack the artistic details shown on the packaging that made them worth buying.

Kelly says she would not have paid $4.49 for a bag of Reese’s Peanut Butter Pumpkins had she known that the candies not only lacked the “cute looking” carved eyes and mouth shown on the packaging, but any carvings at all and so she wants $5 million.

Only in America, I think.

It has been brought to my attention that the stick figure decals on the back windows of many cars are NOT pedestrian "kill" scores but are meant to represent members of your family.

I will be removing mine ASAP to avoid any further confusion.

For too long, we have refused to acknowledge that American history taught in schools is white history. Not this one. This history is Black AF. 

Barbra Streisand’s memoir, My Name is Barbra, tells the story  of her life and career, from growing up in Brooklyn to her first star-making appearances in New York nightclubs to her breakout performance in Funny Girl on stage and to directing film and touring and recording; the book is, like Barbra herself, frank, funny, opinionated, and charming. 

I was looking at old photos this morning and came across this one of Carlos and me on our first date, which lasted eleven days in July 2000 when I flew from Sacramento to Miami to meet him. This is from our days in Key West on that first date.

And it was Senator Johnson who voted to acquit in the impeachment hearings, so maybe Ron should take a good long seat.. Sit this one out, Senator.

Elliot Page, trans actor, condemning Texas government officials for declaring that medical care for transgender youths is child abuse:

“I am horrified by the inhumane and downright dangerous declarations by the Texas Governor and Attorney General. Trans youth deserve gender-affirming care and to be able to live their true, authentic selves without fear and oppression. I stand with trans youth and their families.”

Texas. It’s hate and fear and loathing as long as the GOP is in charge. They won’t fix their electric grid issues or stem the tide of mass shootings, but they will punish parents of trans kids and trans kids.

Billy Porter, on how he feels after revealing he is HIV+:

“I’ve been positive since 2007. And, you know, having lived through the AIDS crisis, it was heavy for me. It was a heavy year, 2007. “ I have to start in 2007. In June of that year, I was diagnosed HIV-positive. Having lived through the plague, my question was always, ‘Why was I spared? Why am I living?’ Well, I’m living so that I can tell the story. There’s a whole generation that was here, and I stand on their shoulders. I can be who I am in this space, at this time, because of the legacy that they left for me. So it’s time to put my big boy pants on and talk. I was the generation that was supposed to know better, and it happened anyway. It was 2007, the worst year of my life. “I was on the precipice of obscurity for about a decade or so, but 2007 was the worst of it. By February, I had been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. By March, I signed bankruptcy papers. And by June, I was diagnosed HIV-positive. The shame of that time compounded with the shame that had already [accumulated] in my life silenced me, and I have lived with that shame in silence for 14 years. I lived with the shame of it for a really long time and last week I released that shame, I released that trauma and I am a free man, honey! Free! I’ve never felt joy like this before. And, you know, we talk about it in the Black church. You know, this joy that I have—the world didn’t give and the world can’t take it away. I got it. I got some joy now. It really feels good, it really feels great.”

Once again, this proves that Silence = Death; that we are only as sick as our secrets, and we need not feel shame for a health condition, no matter what.

Andrew Wommack, faux-Christian, on putting a warning label on The Gays:

And if warning labels did help, perhaps God should slap one on your face as being a hypocrite and a liar and all kinds of stupid, and for spreading hate; all things far more dangerous that being gay.

Of note: Wommack claims to have he prayed away “the curse of mildew.” He says Jesus protects Christians from COVID by “turning off your virus receptors” and yet dozens of Wommack’s followers became infected with COVID at one of his own Bible retreats.

Lastly, Andrew Wommack says he knows COVID is “no big deal” because his wife and son were “raised from the dead.” But they are clearly brain dead.

Kirstie Alley, Scientology loon and has-been actress, saying depression is not a mental illness:

“You aren’t really allowed to say this in the very liberal community because they think what you’re saying is stigmatizing mental illness. Well, this is what I’m here to say — I don’t think you’re mentally ill if you’re depressed. You know people say to me, ‘Well, you’re a Scientologist.’ I feel lucky that I’m a Scientologist. Because in Scientology what you do is you find out why you’re so screwed up. And you find out why are you depressed, there’s a reason people are depressed. So, she uses Scientology as a psychiatrist but thinks psychiatry is a sham?

Elliot Page, previously known as Ellen before coming out as transgender, on adopting a male identity at a very young age:

“All trans people are so different, and my story’s absolutely just my story. But yes, when I was a little kid, absolutely, 100%, I was a boy. I knew I was a boy when I was a toddler. I was writing fake love letters and signing them ‘Jason.’ Every little aspect of my life, that is who I was, who I am, and who I knew myself to be. I just couldn’t understand when I’d be told, ‘No, you’re not. No, you can’t be that when you’re older. You feel it. Now I’m finally getting myself back to feeling like who I am, and it’s so beautiful and extraordinary, and there’s a grief to it in a way. The most significant difference is that I’m really able to just exist. Just exist by myself, like be able to sit with myself. Not have some constant distraction, all these things that aren’t conscious or aren’t even overly overt. For the first time in, I don’t even know how long, [I am] really just being able to sit by myself, be on my own, be productive, and be creative. It’s such an oversimplification to say it this way, but I’m comfortable. I feel a significant difference in my ability to just exist—and not even just day to day, but moment to moment. This is the first time I’ve even felt really present with people, that I can be just really relaxed and not have an anxiety that’s always pulling. In terms of acting, I don’t think I quite know yet. I am just a lot more f****** comfortable and present, so it’s hard to imagine that that’s not affecting the work, because, really, being present’s ultimately what you’re going for—you’re just ultimately trying to crack open and be present and connect to the truth of a moment. So I’m imagining the more I get to embody who I am and exist in the body I want to exist in, there’ll be a difference.”

So many of us go into life and through life knowing who we are, even if we have to come to terms with it because it may not be the “norm,” but imagine a young trans kid? That’s a struggle for acceptance, not only from your friends and family and the world, but from yourself.

Busy Philipps, actress, on teaching her mother about different pronouns after revealing her own daughter is non-binary:

“[My] mom is older and wants to understand the pronoun conversation more. I said to my mother, Here’s the deal: You don’t have to understand it.’ That’s how I feel about all human rights—you don’t have to understand it. You can choose to believe what you want, but you don’t get to have jurisdiction over anyone else’s body or belief system.”

You don’t have to understand why anyone would use they/them as their pronouns, but you cannot deny them their choices.

I mean, what does it hurt to use they/them? Who does it hurt? But then who does it hurt when you don’t?

Elton John, honoring Dr. Anthony Fauci on World AIDS Day for his early work on the global HIV/AIDS crisis and his effort to educate the public on the COVID-19 pandemic:

"What a wonderful and fitting way to mark World AIDS Day, by honoring one of the biggest champions in the history of the AIDS epidemic. "There are very few people on this planet who have dedicated themselves to a lifetime of service to save millions of lives like Dr. Fauci. His unwavering commitment to public health and innovation has transformed the approach to HIV, and it is his leadership and persistence that will ultimately help us overcome the Covid-19 pandemic."

Fauci, the longtime director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, served as the National Institutes of Health's AIDS coordinator before becoming the first director of the NIH's Office of AIDS Research, where he served from 1988 to 1994. He faced protests and condemnation from activists in organizations like the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power [ACT UP] for his handling of the deadly disease as it claimed more than 100,000 lives in the United States, but he would go on to collaborate with activists on research and drug trial development.

Hero. Or Heroes. Elton John deserves heaps of praise for his work rising money for AIDS research.

Ryan Phillippe, actor, on how his Baptist parents shunned him for playing a gay teen shunned by his parents on One Life To Live:

“I thought my parents were going to disown me [for deciding to do Cruel Intentions]. I had grown up going to, like, Baptist school and Christian school. My first role ever coming out of the Christian school when I was a senior in high school, I played the first gay character on a soap opera—first gay teenager ever—and so I was shunned at that point. So, they were already out of the picture. I mean this was 1992, and I was playing a gay teenager and I was in a Christian school. They weren’t happy about it.”

Life imitating art. Even worse his parents didn’t want him to play gay and so they shunned him. I wonder what they might have done if Phillippe was actually gay.

Melissa McCarthy, actress, apologizing for HBO Max’s $20,000 donation to Exodus Cry, an organization led by Benjamin Nolot, who is virulently anti-LGBTQ and anti-choice:

“It has come to our attention that our 20 Days of Kindness, which is something—a  kindness up that we started to kind of shine a light on 20 great charities—had one in there that, there’s no other way to say it, we blew it. We made a mistake, and we backed a charity that, upon proper vetting, stands for everything that we do not. So, I want to thank everyone, on social media who said, ‘What are you doing? Are you sure you want to back this?’ Because the answer was no we do not. We have pulled it. We are so incredibly grateful for you ringing the bell and helping us be better, We’re sorry for our mistake. Oh boy, are we sorry for it. [I] can’t believe that we missed it. And that’s it. And I just want to say that I hope it doesn’t ding the other charities because they’re really doing some amazing things, and 20 Days of Kindness Is really meant to shine the light on all of those wonderful charities. So, let the kindness continue… and thank you. Thanks for the help, we really needed it.”

The donation was made as part of a 20 Days of Kindness campaign to promote McCarthy’s new film Superintelligence. Nolot, who now claims his views have changed, has a history of inflammatory rhetoric towards homosexuals and abortion, and has referred to homosexuality as ‘an unspeakable offense to God’ and compared abortion to the Holocaust.

Thanks to Melissa McCarthy who, unlike Nolot, realized that when you know better, you do better.

Braunwyn Windham-Burke, of the Real Housewives of Orange County, coming out as a lesbian:

“It’s been something that I think everyone’s kind of known has been coming, but I’m finally comfortable enough to say, I like women. I’m gay. I’m a member of the LGBTQI+ community. I’m a lesbian. It has taken me 42 years to say that, but I’m so proud of where I am right now. And I’m so happy where I am. To be able to be comfortable in my own skin after so long is just so nice. I love [my husband] Sean. I love him dearly, he is my person, he is my family. But I’m not attracted to men and I never have been. We are in unchartered territories. Sean and I are still married, I plan on staying married. We are not sleeping in the same bedroom right now, but we are in the same house. We are raising our kids together, he’s my best friend. He knows the girl I’m dating. I grew up in a time when, you know, my idea of what being a lesbian was you had short hair, you wore flannel. There’s a very masculine stereotype, so when I was younger I never really thought that I could be that. I knew I was attracted to women. I always have been. But I liked makeup and hair and I didn’t quite understand what to do with that.”

Windham-Burke has been married to her husband Sean Burke for more than 20 years, and they have seven children. She also revealed this season that she is an alcoholic..

After reading this I watched RHoC that night, and while, during that episode she had yet to come out, she did reveal that she had been living her life doing what others wanted of her, keeping quiet, not being true to herself. And now, at 42, she’s coming into her own.
