Architecture Wednesday: The White House on the Isle of Coll

There are a lot of people, myself included, who might be turned off by a house out in the middle of nowhere … and this house, the White House, though it sits by the sea, is located in Grishipoll, Isle of Coll, Argyll and Bute … wherever that might be.

Plus, again, a turn-off, the home has a huge crack in it.

Luckily there were some folks, and the fine folks at WT Architecture, who weren’t afraid to tackle it because now it’s an amazing house … location and cracked walls included.

This new home is built on, in, and around the ruins of ‘The White House’ where Boswell and Johnston visited during their tour of the Hebrides in 1773.  Yes, the original home is two-hundred-forty-three years old … I’d be a little cracked, too.

The cleft ruin is only partly occupied, with a living room connecting a wing of domestic accommodation to the west — sheltered by a massive dry stone wall that extends into the landscape — and the private sides of the home to the east.

This really is a great home, with its ancient walls and its modern amenities. Now, if I could only found out how to get to Grishipoll, Isle of Coll, Argyll and Bute.
