In certain genres, the live album is a perilous affair, fraught with the danger that the live performance will fail to match the more polished magic of the studio. With certain genres like the blues, however, the immediacy of the live performance is frequently the desired result, even in the studio. House Rockin' and Blues Shoutin' captures the live performances of a handful of bands, singers, and musicians delving deep into electric blues at the Rhythm Room in Phoenix. The standards of the genre are on full display in this collection, from soulful singing to electric guitar and harp work to tried and true lyrics about hard-living and no-good women. Featured performers include the Fabulous Thunderbirds, the Mannish Boys, Long John Hunter, Floyd Dixon, Big Pete Pearson, Henry Gray, Sonny Rhodes, Paul Oscher, Chief Schabutti Gilliame, Robert Lockwood, Jr., Louisiana Red, and Billy Boy Arnold. While full bands and vocals constitute most of the arrangements, solo performances, including "Long John's Country Blues" by Hunter and "C.C. Rider" by Lockwood, offer welcome variety. There's also the occasional instrumental, including a spry version of "Henry's Houserocker" by Gray. One might wish for the presence of one or two female performers, but with all of the testosterone floating around in these songs, they probably steered clear of the Rhythm Room. For the blues aficionado, House Rockin' and Blues Shoutin' will serve as a powerful dose of the real thing. ~Review by Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

With roots originally planted deep within the frozen terrain of northern B.C., Roadside Recovery is the third full-length album from Canadian all-girl band, Miss Quincy & The Showdown. The album boasts a penetratingly powerful soundscape that bridges the gaps between rock ‘n’ roll, blues, soul and a speckle of gospel.

The album effortlessly transports listeners to a timelessly cool wood-panelled rock bar you’d expect to frequent in Austin, Texas, where patrons drink beer with a side of whiskey and are treated to live performances from amateur bands that eventually take the music industry by storm. Roadside Recovery kicks off extremely strong with the track “Bad Love.” With a thumping bass line that mimics a heart pumping with adrenaline, it perfectly sets the stage for the other nine powerful tracks that follow.

The collection has a beautiful storyline to it, carrying a strong build through standout tracks like “Making Money” and “Wild Fucking West,” until it climaxes and brings things home with the title track. The band also shows their diversity by slowing things down slightly with numbers “Talkin’ Trash” and “Take It to the Well,” which show a vulnerable, sexy side and perfectly round out the album.

One consistent element is the raunchy-bluesy guitar riffs, superb drum lines and incredibly powerful vocals paired with enticing lyrics, with which Miss Quincy & The Showdown mesmerize. Roadside Recovery is a robustly memorable album that is exemplary within its genre, bringing in classic elements you would expect from bluegrass forefathers of the 1930s but never losing its modern aesthetic. Although he now calls Canada home, Maple Blues Award winner David Vest is an authentic, Southern-bred boogie-woogie piano player and blues shouter. Born in Alabama in 1943, David grew up in Birmingham, not far from Tuxedo Junction. He played his first paying gig in 1957, and by the time he opened for Roy Orbison on New Year's Day 1962, he was a seasoned veteran of Gulf Coast roadhouses and honky tonks.

At the age of 17, David went on tour with Jerry Woodard and the Esquires, some of whom later became key members of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section and the Muscle Shoals Horns. While still with Woodard, he jammed with Ace Cannon, Bill Black's Combo and the Jimmy Dorsey Band in clubs along the Florida Panhandle, where fellow Alabaman James Harman would soon make his mark.

He had seen Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash in the 1950s. He saw Bo Diddley, Jimmy Reed, and John Lee Hooker in the prime of their careers. Sam Cooke, Clyde McPhatter and Hank Ballard, too. About the time he turned 21 he found himself onstage backing Big Joe Turner, who said that David Vest's playing made him feel like he was back home in Kansas City.

He had also worked the southern gospel circuit, appearing on programs with the Statesmen and the Blackwood Brothers. His first recording featured the last song written by Alton Delmore. David himself wrote the first songs ever recorded by Tammy Wynette, as detailed in Jimmy McDonough's bio of the country legend. He also dated a sister of the Louvin Brothers, toured with Faron Young (who threatened to kill him), backed Red Foley in a show where all the stars got robbed, worked in a theatre with Fannie Flagg and became the first American artist to record an album in Romania, after his appearance at the Sibiu Jazz Festival.

Later David would receive the "direct laying on of hands" from piano legends like Big Walter The Thunderbird and Floyd Dixon. He would tour extensively with Jimmy T99 Nelson and Miss Lavelle White. Katie Webster told him, "I knows it when I hears it."

From 2002 through 2006, he shared lead vocals and frontman duties in the Paul deLay Band, culminating in his performance on an award-winning live CD, which reached the Top Ten on Billboard's national blues chart. During his years in Portland, David won five Muddy Awards from the Cascade Blues Association, including Best Keyboard Player.

After deLay's untimely death, Vest joined forces with Kenny 'Blues Boss' Wayne and various other pianists, including Ann Rabson, to form the supergroup Northwest Pianorama.

David's many festival appearances include the Tremblant International Blues Festival, Seattle's Bumbershoot, the King Biscuit Festival, the Portland Waterfront Blues Festival, the Winthrop Rhythm & Blues Festival, the Edmonton Labatt's Blues Festival, the Calgary Blues Festival, the Baltimore Blues Festival, Houston's Juneteenth Festival, the Ritzville Blues Festival, the Salem Arts Festival and the New Orleans Jazz Heritage Festival (with Miss Lavelle White).

In 2005, an Oregon Public Broadcasting "Art Beat" feature on David Vest was voted a "Viewer Favorite," beating out Pink Martini and other NW notables.

In 2012 he recorded and released East Meets Vest, backed by members of Downchild and Fathead. Holger Petersen of CBC Saturday Night Blues called it "one of the best Canadian blues albums of 2012."

David's piano work can also be heard on Bill Johnson's Juno-nominated Still Blue, and on David Gogo's Christmas with the Blues.

Guitar Slim Jr. was born Rodney Armstrong in New Orleans in 1951. His father is Eddie Jones, Guitar Slim, a Blues artist most famous for his best selling song, “”The Things That I Used to Do”.

Guitar Slim Jr. has worked with many blues musicians, and received critical acclaim with his debut album, “The Story of My Life”. It received a Grammy nomination in 1988 for Best Blues Traditional Album.

Guitar Slim Jr has worked for many years around the New Orleans Blues club circuit, and has toured with Stevie Ray Vaughn. He continues to play in New Orleans venues, including the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.

A get down and dirty, raw, rootsy blues band is how I would describe.44 Pistol. Hailing from the Stafford area their exciting live new album, ‘Live At The Vaults’, gives a great insight into the down to earth blues they produce.

Pete Wearn on vocals, harmonica and slide guitar, Ash Jones on guitar and backing vocals, and Mick Askey make up this interesting trio. Some of the tracks on the album are self penned or are traditionally arranged classic blues standards. The album was recorded live at Market Vaults in Stafford, engineered and mixed by Tom Wojtulewicz and mastered by Doug Rouxel.

First up ‘Help Me’, originally recorded by Sonny Boy Williamson, is a rolling mid tempo 12 bar blues. It is well performed with harmonica input. Next a self penned upbeat R&B number ‘Salvation’. This has a great guitar solo.

With harmonica, driving rhythms and raw guitar on this Slim Harpo’s up tempo 12 bar rocky blues, ‘Got Love If You Want It’ , the guys laid down a great sound which was one of my favourite tracks on the album. On to a Lighnin Hopkins standard ‘Let Me Play With Your Poodle’, an excellent rockin’ 12 bar blues.

The classic blues song ‘Baby Please Don’t Go’ was reminiscent of the early works of Them. Followed by the self penned track ‘Born In The Borderlands’, which got ‘down and dirty’ with an earthy raw feel.

‘The Sun Goes Down’ , another self penned track, has a swamp rock earthy feel. While ‘Wish I Was In Heaven’, a classic Delta blues, has some great slide guitar, show casing the drums with some Bo Diddley rhythms and gusty vocals.

The traditional Elmor James number, ‘Shake Your Money Maker’, was a great rockin’ track with excellent harmonica. Some class slide guitar on the raw R&B number, ‘What’d I Say’ by Ray Charles.

The standard blues ‘Forty Four Pistol’ and the name sake of the band, had some drivin’ slide guitar, as did ‘Shake Them Down’ which was a great rockin’ blues. I believe Pete Wearn uses his home made guitar for the authentic delta sound. An excellent sound whatever.

The final track on the album was the great r&r classic ‘Got My Mojo Working’, great for audience participation and especially for a live album.

I enjoyed the fact that the album wasn’t ‘polished’. It gave a ‘what you see is what you get’ flavour and the energy of the band was evident. A great snapshot into the live performance and I hope I will catch these guys at a gig in the near future. ~ROSY GREER – Lancashire Blues Archive

Michael worked with Chuck Berry in the late sixties on the east coast and also recorded at Electric Lady Studios produced by Jimi Hendrix. In the early seventies, after moving west, Michael joined Banana, keyboardist for the Youngbloods, in his band. Michael worked as a side man with jazz singer, Randy Crawford ("Street Life"). In addition to gigs at major venues, her band also played opposite Ronnie Laws, Herbie Hancock, Eddie Harris, Stanley Turentine and other jazz luminaries. For two years, Michael worked with San Francisco organist, Merl Saunders with stints behind singing acts like Hodges, James, and Smith, and others. Michael performed and recorded with Bay area fusion group WBBH. Philip Elwood, in the San Francisco Examiner review, wrote: "A beauty on the LP called 'Lover's Lullaby' features...Barclay on guitar. Barclay, an impressive front man and guitarist, also is an excellent singer." Michael composed the instrumental piece Elwood refers to. After gigs with Dorothy Morrison ("Oh happy day") in the notorious Marin jam band, Fast Company, Michael formed and recorded The MICHAEL BARCLAY BLUES BAND. Michael has also supported Julian Lage, Dorothy Morrison (‘Oh Happy Day’), Bo Diddley, Norton Buffalo, Nick Gravenites, Sarah Baker, Stu Blank and others. He produced the recordings of the late Pattie Santos (It's a Beautiful Day). Michael was a featured performer at: The Russian River Blues Festival; and, The Sonoma County Blues Festival, on two occasions, where the band was received enthusiastically. Recently, Michael signed contracts and completed the production of a blues themes album forThe Hollywood Edge, a TV and cinema music library; as well as Human Factor Music, Crucial Music, Sound Exchange, and Rumblefish among others. Once again Michael and the band performed recently on the same bill with Duke Robillard. At the beginning of his career, he backed Chuck Berry; now in his later years, Michael backed Bo Diddley among many others - a fitting history for the Northern California Bluesman from NYC> Michael has released 4 CDs that are available on itunes, CDBaby, and Amazon among others. Born in Worcestershire, the younger sister of the late John and Michael Bonham. Deborah was only five when John joined Led Zeppelin, and this powerful introduction sparked in her the overwhelming desire to write and perform. Her home was The Old Hyde farm, where she lived with her father, John Henry Bonham snr, known as Jack, in the cottage at the back of The Old Hyde Farm. Her brother, John and his family, lived in the main House. While living there, Deborah and John's son Jason started writing and recording their own songs. At the age of 17, at Robert Plant's house in a nearby village, she recorded her first demos. Deborah sent out the songs anonymously and soon landed her first record deal with the major label Carerre Records, for whom she recorded the critically acclaimed album 'For You and the Moon'. The album reached the top 5 in the NME chart, was Simon Bates Record of the Week on BBC Radio 1 and sold extremely well in Europe, being voted 'Record of the Year' by Musik Mart, Germany. A period of recording for the Japanese label SAM Co. followed, and with press and radio promotion including interviews for Burrn and J Wave Radio. English label RPM, released the single, 'Perfect World' in 1995.

1997 saw two extremely successful trips to the US. Firstly, she performed live on LA's Rockline radio to three million listeners throughout North America and Canada, followed by a guest appearance with Jason Bonham and his band at the Whiskey A Go Go in Los Angeles. The success of the first trip led to a US tour with her band to open for The Jason Bonham Band kicking off in Los Angeles at the 'House of Blues' with guests SLASH and TERRY REID. Dallas Fort Worth, Houston, New York and Chicago 'House of Blues' subsequently followed.

Back in the UK Deborah began recording 'The Old Hyde' (2004), the long awaited follow up to her debut album, which featured Jason Bonham on drums throughout and a special guest appearance from Mick Fleetwood. Reviewers were equally impressed - Classic Rock lead the compliments '...the album has balls...a classy set of bluesy hard rock'

Country Music Round-Up simply said '...quite superb' and the influential All Music Guide judged that it was '...one of the best blues-rock albums of the early 21st century, not a bummer in sight'.

Deborah's last album 'Duchess' (Warner Rhino 2008) was perceived by the press as her finest work to date. Consisting of 13 original compositions, it featured her forceful working band bassist Ian Rowley, keyboardist Gerard Louis, guitarist Peter Bullick and Jerry Shirley of Humble Pie on drums. Each song showcases Deborah's soulful singing and her effortless, sensitive approach to a gamut of styles from blues and soul to country and rock, and includes a moving duet with Paul Rodgers on 'Hold On' with Jason Bonham on drums. Reviews of 'Duchess' were glowing: Blues Matters! described Deborah as '...a blues mama par excellence'; the USA's Blues Revue listed her as '...one of the New Women of Blues' and Modern Guitars proclaimed '...a celebration of soul, strength and family... the album stands as her finest work to date'.

A blistering live set adds to the magic of Deborah Bonham and suggest that this is a band that must be seen and heard live. Having played festivals from Canterbury to Glastonbury, Bulldog Bash to Donington, Cambridge to Cropredy, Ripfest to Harley Davidson's European Festivals, Deborah's live performances have seen her open shows and duet with such luminaries as Paul Rodgers, Jools Holland, Fairport Convention, Ann Peebles, Paul Weller, Robert Plant, Foreigner, Nazareth, (Dan McCafferty performed his first-ever duet on tour in the UK with Deborah, singing the Lorraine Ellison soul classic 'Stay With Me Baby'). Humble Pie, Lonnie Donegan, Van Halen, Alannah Myles, Peter Frampton and Donovan. Deborah also performed alongside Ozzy Osbourne in the Czech Republic, where she returned for more shows in January 2011, and France, Germany, Portugal and Austria in 2012. UK and European dates are being scheduled throughout 2013 to coincide with the release of the new album 'Spirit'.

Yet another adventure down the road of our musical life. this was recorded at Barry's "Running Horse" in nottingham england a great venue for any band. we had just finished a three month tour in europe and we recorded this at the end. we had a great time as usual. we just mixed it and here you have it... we decided not to 'fix it' in the studio with overdubs so there is the human element there. we aren't a pop band and needless to say some nights are better than others and this was the night we recorded...champagne, beer, whiskey, lots of our fans and fun. the band consists of: lightnin'willie-guitar/vocals;giles king-harmonica/vocals; spy-bass/vocals;and sam "sqeaky wheels" kelly-drums. these are some of the best guys in the music business... life is short as i am learning and i am proud to work with such stellar musicians if it was over tomorrow i would have no regrets. being a musician you are always learning...i can't play like my heroes nor can they play like us. we thank all those that have come before us without them i don't think we'd have the music we have today. each generation has it's own i'm glad some of the past has prevailed to inspire musicians like us. until the next cd...

b. Joshua Gilmore, c. 1947, Ocala, Florida, USA. After teaching himself to play guitar at an early age, Gilmore began performing in public with a small band of like-minded youths. At first, he played and sang in church, his repertoire largely religious music, but gradually incorporated secular music and thus widened his audience although he and his band’s club dates were usually in establishments they were too young to legally enter.

In the 60s, Gilmore moved to the southern end of his home state where he became a popular figure on the local blues scene and was often called upon to accompany visiting musicians. He recorded from the mid-70s, releasing some EPs and there was also a late 80s album but it was not until the early 90s that his recordings began to appear regularly. Gilmore has appeared at numerous blues and/or jazz festivals, including Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, Mississippi Valley, Montreux, Riverwalk, Taiwan, and at the Blues Foundation’s International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee, where he appeared in 2006 to great acclaim, winning the Best Band division. Among Gilmore’s sidemen in the mid-00s were Regi Oliver (saxophone/keyboard), George Caldwell (bass) and Dave Wooten (drums).

Harmonicadave (aka Dave Hunt) is back with his great new album ‘Box Full of Blues’, a collection of Southern blues anthems, cool swamp tunes, and harmonica driven rockers. This 10-track album was produced by Andy Littlewood, and features guest musician spots by Mick Simpson, and The MEP Collective.

Bio:
It all started for Harmonicadave about 100 years ago as a little kid playing drums to "The Little Red Rooster". Dave turned pro at the age of 18 and toured Germany, during that trip to Frankfurt the singer was so ill she had to return to the UK, so Dave took over vocals, he soon got the front man bug and never went back to playing the drums again.
In 1971 Dave formed the band 'Grecco', with Rick Woogar, Lee Baker, Andy Dransfield and Mick Clark. They had a great following and managed to reach the finals of the Melody Maker Rock Competition, coming in second place. In the mid 70’s, Dave played in the blues band 'Snatch', along with Steve Wilkinson, Craig Laing, Colin Wight and John Laforge. Dave took to playing harp after some great tips from Tony Wilkinson of the Bamboo Beat Band.
Dave's travels then took him to Spain, where he worked with ‘The Blue Thunder Band’, and played at prestigious Harley and Fiesta gigs, performing to huge sell out crowds. He played at the Calpe Bike Festival and was made an honoree member of ‘The Crusaders Harley Club’. Dave performed alongside big names such as B.B. King, Linda Gail Lewis (Gerry Lees Sister), and Dutch star Stephen Ackles. He also appeared on a number of Spanish TV & radio shows, and built up a big following through performing at his own blues nights staged at The Heartbreak Hotel Rock Bar, Daytona Rock Bar, Western Saloon, and The Guinness Bar in Benidorm.
On his return to the UK Dave continued to do his own solo gigs, as well as working with other artists such as Blues Boy Kings, Starving Sid, Donna Shaw, Foot Nose Blues Band, and The Spitfires. In 2012, he signed a deal with UK label Mad Ears Productions, and through his work with the label has featured as a guest musician on album releases by Mockingbird Hill, Mick Simpson, and Malaya Blue.

Duffy's long anticipated eighth album, Find Your Way Home, was just released this April, 2014.
Based in Portland Oregon, Duffy is in the Cascade Blues Association and Washington Blues Society Hall Of Fame, and a recipient of both organizations' Lifetime Achievement Award. She has won the CBA's Female Vocalist Award so many years in a row that they renamed it the Duffy Bishop Female Vocalist Award.
Duffy started performing professionally in her early teens. Over the course of her four decade career she has shared the stage with many legends including Ruth Brown, John Lee Hooker, Etta James, Gatemouth Brown, Lou Rawls, Bonnie Raitt, Shemekia Copeland, Bo Diddley and Bobby Blue Bland to name a few.
With her long-time collaborator, guitarist and husband Chris Carlson, they have played venues across the USA, Canada, Norway, Japan, Hong Kong, and Austria.
When not touring with their band, Duffy and Chris join Teatro ZinZanni, a circus/ cabaret/tent show in Seattle, San Francisco and Europe. Duffy stars in the lead role as Madame ZinZanni, a role also performed by Thelma Houston, Joan Baez and Ann Wilson.
Duffy played Janis Joplin in a Seattle production of the original play Janis. Sam Andrew, guitarist for Janis' band Big Brother and the Holding Company, was an advisor on the show. Through that connection, Duffy performed with Big Brother and toured Japan with the band.
Duffy performed the role of Dr. Frankenfurter in The Empty Space Theater's production of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

“The Headcutters”, from Itajaí – SC, is considered to be one of the most highlighted blues bands in Brazil. Using the 40s ands 50s sound and style, they follow the legendaries Blues records labels from Chicago of that time.

The band’s name serves as tribute to the Blues idols from the 50s, such as Muddy Waters, Little Walter and Jimmi Rogers, who in that period were called “The Headhunters”. Thus, THE HEADCUTTERS comes as a reference to those great masters who were clear and strong influence to the band.

Performing very charismatic, exciting and catching concerts, the band has been gathering a faithful audience in every show since it’s beginning. Featuring Joe Marhoffer (harmonica and vocals), Ricardo Maca (guitar and vocals), Arthur “Catuto” Garcia (acoustic bass) and Leandro Cavera (drums).

The band has played in several blues festivals, produced concerts and shared stage with various national and international bigshots such as Phil Guy (irmão de Buddy Guy) Eddie C. Campbell, Gary Smith, Billy Branch, Carlos Jonhson, J.J. Jackson, Lynwood Slim, Mitch Kashmar, Donny Nichillo, Igor Prado, Blues Etílicos among others.

The Headcutters has just released their “Back To 50’s” CD, a full vintage recording accomplished through tape rolls and 50’s style valved equipments, made at Itajaí’s Historical Museum. An album that has been receiving both national and international critical acclaim, and that shows a real time travel, with all the sound and magic from the 50’s, which represented Chicago Urban Blues.

The first album in this set, is a live acoustic take , with Kyla Brox on vocals and flute, Danny Bromeley on guitar and Tony Marshall on saxophone. Some tracks have appeared on previous albums, with most being self penned, but with a live and acoustic rendition they have a whole new feel.

Superb vocals from Kyla, as you would expect, with Danny playing acoustic guitar, with all I can say is brilliance! Great guitar solos throughout, but he particularly comes to life on the up tempo number ‘Too Young To Care’ , what a player! Kyla also shows her expertise as a flautist on ‘Don’t Mess With My Man’ and ‘Do I Move You’. There is some wonderful sax playing from Tony with jazz overtones on the final five tracks of this superb acoustic album.

So many different tempos fill this album, but one track immediately springs to mind. ‘Feeling Good’, a classic, which is performed with such feeling and sensitivity, absolutely magic. Another track, ‘All Breaking Down’ is haunting with flute and sax and superb vocals from Kyla, it also has a fair bit of audience participation which adds to the ambiance of this live performance.

The final track on the album ‘Gone’, is one of the most iconic tracks. So beautifully sung and played, it does give you goose bumps!

Moving on to the second CD in the set, recorded live at The Great British R&B Festival in Colne in 2012, with the full band. Kyla on vocals and flute, Danny on bass guitar, Tony on sax, Paul Farr on electric guitar, Rick Weedon on drums and John Ellis on keys, it bursts into a full on band sound with ‘Ball And Chain’, some great Hammond input. A classic sultry jazzy blues and Kyla can sure hold a note!!!

A couple of ‘funky’ numbers follow, with guest Franny Eubank on harmonica on ‘Shaken And Stirred’, which was certainly ‘in the groove’.

With a mix of slow and up beat rockin’ numbers, it was great to hear vocal input on the final track, ‘Wang Dang Doodle’ from the master of early blues/jazz, Mr Victor Brox. A great take on this classic number.

Superb vocals and flute playing from Kyla and some outstanding sax playing throughout the album from Tony. As a live album, it gives you a true picture of how good this band really is.

Bob Corritore has always been one of our favorite harp players. Born and musically bred in Chicago, Bob honed his skills by learning from many of the greats who either lived in our toured thru the Windy City. As such, he’s got that old-school feel in his soul that always puts the song first, which is why he has been such an in-demand sideman and producer throughout his career. His latest album for Delta Groove is entitled “Taboo,” and it is a departure of sorts for Bob. This is a set of all-instrumental harp blues that puts Bob at the forefront, and allows his versatility to grab center stage.

Joining Bob for this foray into the varying sounds of the blues harp are some killer musicians, including Junior Watson and Jimmie Vaughn on guitars, Fred Kaplan and Papa John DeFrancesco on keys, and Richard Innes, Brian Fahey, and Dowell Davis on drums. Virtually on every cut, Bob steps aside from his harp playing to let those talented cats stretch out a little, adding to the verve and flair of the overall set.

A perfect case in point is the leadoff “Potato Stomp,” with Bob’s harp working in perfect tandem with Doug James’ sax. They re-create that interplay on the jazzy swing of “Mr. Tate’s Advice,” and on the uptempo “Shuff Stuff.” The latter two also feature Jimmie Vaughn on guitar.

Bob explores some varying genres’ herein as well. Farfisa organ coupled with Bob’s reed work make the “Harmonica Watusi’ reminiscent of some of the great instrumentals from the Sixties. “Harp Blast” is a stone shot of Chicago blues, while the Latin-flavored spice of “Fabuloco (For Kid)” is done in tribute to Bob’s good friend, guitarist Kid Ramos. The loping pattern of “Ruckus Rhythm” recalls the great Jimmy Reed sides for Vee-Jay, and Bob closes the set with his own version of “After Hours,” with the slow-burn of “Bob’s Late Hours,” punctuated by Junior Watson’s guitar and Fred Kaplan’s piano.

We had two favorites, too. “Many A Devil’s Night” has a brooding, dark vibe as Bob plays this minor-key blues on the chromatic. And, the title cut takes you down to a South Seas paradise as his harp leads work effortlessly over a smooth rhumba groove.

Another harmonica great, Charlie Musselwhite, has nothing but praise for Bob Corritore’s “Taboo.” We echo these sentiments, as Bob has indeed hit on a winning formula! Until next time…Sheryl and Don Crow.

Meena Cryle and Chris Fillmore, the group's songwriting team, share a deep artistic connection that goes back more than 20 years. Today their understanding is nothing less than intuitive. "Chris and I are like Jagger and Richards or Ike & Tina Turner," says singer Cryle. They recorded their debut album Try Me outside Memphis in the summer of 2009; the collaboration with legendary producer Jim Gaines (Santana, Stevie Ray Vaughan, John Lee Hooker) and a slew of top-class guest artists was a huge challenge and important stepping stone. Their strong follow-up Feel Me was released in 2011 and marked the first appearance of bassist Marlene Lacherstorfer. She and drummer Frank Cortez have been the backbone of the band for the past three years.
Meena Cryle & The Chris Fillmore Band were runners-up at the European Blues Challenge 2011 in Berlin and went on to receive accolades from the jury and audience at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in 2013. That same year, Meena was also nominated for the Amadeus - Austrian Music Award.
After more than 200 concerts in the current line-up, the band decided it didn't need any help from session musicians in making their third record. "The past two years," reports front woman Meena, "have turned us into a tough, tight unit. The other members of the band know my every move and understand every tiny signal, so they know how to follow my emotions. They give me the perfect musical framework and are all great musicians." Because they wanted Tell Me to be an album without limits, the band chose to work with Berlin-based producer Raphael Tschernuth. During the extremely intense sessions at the Golden Retriever Studio, their new producer helped them put that wish into practice. "I've known Raphael since I was a kid and have worked on a number of projects with him in the past. We know each other inside and out and complement each other perfectly. This gave all of us more confidence to try out new things, to experiment more, and to play with more freedom," says Chris Fillmore with satisfaction.
The easy, organic feel of the twelve songs on Tell Me truly does reflect that newfound sense of self-confidence. The album features rock-oriented cuts ("Enough is Enough"), deeply soulful grooves ("I Beg You" – which sounds like a mixture of John Lee Hooker and Foo Fighters), high-spirited songs that recall the spirit of Sun Records ("Give It Back," "Take This Pressure Off Of Me") – but regardless of style, all four band members play with passion and commitment. Thanks to the use of analogue recording equipment and rare ribbon microphones from the 1930s, Meena's powerful voice sounds richer and more natural than ever before. Her partner Chris Fillmore demonstrates once again that he's more than just an outstanding guitar player; as songwriter, arranger and co-producer, he forms – together with Meena – the foundation of the band. The energy that flows between the two soul mates makes Tell Me a uniquely gripping listening experience.
Meena Cryle believes in the transcendent power of music. "I don't think when I sing," she says. In the process, she also allows her listeners to escape from reality – at least for a little while. Her next tour with the Chris Fillmore Band is set to begin in March 2014. Blues singer, musician, and songwriter Ray Bonneville is a Juno Award winner originally from Canada. Before he reached his teens, his large family moved to the United States; a few years later, when they returned to Canada, Bonneville stayed in the States on his own. He found work as a member in different bands and as a studio musician, playing both the harmonica and guitar. When he discovered being a musician wasn't paying all of the bills, he studied flying and put in enough hours to get his pilot's license. He was influenced by and performed with great bluesmen like the legendary Muddy Waters and Bukka White. In 1993, Bonneville finished his debut recording On the Main. It was followed by 1997's Solid Ground, which underscored his growing writing and playing skills. Gust of Wind, which earned Bonneville a Juno Award for Canada's Blues Album of the Year, was released in 1999 and Rough Luck came out in 2000. The folk-tinged Roll It Down followed three years later, while 2007's Goin' by Feel boasted a darker, smokier sound and a tribute to New Orleans in the song "I Am the Big Easy." Bonneville reunited with that album's producer, Gurf Morlix, for his next album, 2011's Bad Man's Blood. The album won him an Internatioinal Blues Challenge, Solo/Duet Of The Year award in 2012. Bonneville toured long and hard throughout 2013. When he was ready to record again, he and co-producer and engineer Justin Douglas entered Austin, Texas' Shrine Studio and emerged with Easy Gone. The album was released by Red House in April of 2014.

Austin Walkin' Cane is a blues singer, songwriter and slide guitarist that performs acoustic solo, duo & electric band sets. Austin Walkin’ Cane has toured Australia, Nepal, Colombia, France, Germany, England, Wales, and the US, from New Orleans, Louisiana to Juneau, Alaska with only a guitar & suitcase in hand.

Austin walked for ten years with a cane due to an arterial venous malformation at birth. While performing on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, a homeless man called out "Hey Walkin' Cane got some spare change for a brother?!" Austin took the jibe as his nickname. In 1996, after years of battling the inevitable, his left leg was amputated below the knee. A year after the surgery, he returned to the music scene stronger & without need of a cane.

In 2002, Austin & Karen Starks were married at Sun Studios in Memphis, Tennessee and began recording his 706 Union Ave. cd at the legendary studio immediately after the ceremony. "The thought of getting married & recording in the same room where many of my heroes took their first steps was incredible." AWC's 2008 cd, Murder of a Blues Singer, was inspired by an after hour diner conversation with blues legend Robert Jr. Lockwood. "The stories were flowing like the grease off our plates", subsequently the album is saturated in classic delta blues, as were the tales of Lockwood's stepfather, Robert Johnson. Mr. Lockwood had agreed to perform on the record, but fate had changed that path. The Walkin' Cane Band captured the perfect "live in the studio" feeling that Austin & co-writer Chris Allen had envisioned for these songs. The band is a well oiled machine. Special guests on Murder of a Blues Singer include Colin Dussault, Eroc Sosinski and one of Cleveland's finest gospel groups, the Prayer Warriors.

In 2011, an acoustic cd, A World Of Blues, was released. The Allen/Charanghat original songs were recorded live at the Brothers Lounge as a testament to Walkin' Cane living on the road. The album uses excerpts of Austin's world travels in addition to the show recorded in the heart of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame city.

During the summer of 2014, One Heart Walkin' was recorded in two days at the historic G.A.R. Hall in Peninsula, OH. Built in 1850, the former schoolhouse & Civil War Veteran's hangout, set the perfect mood for this album. Listening to Cane's most recent album is like being a passenger on the old Illinois Central Railroad. These “Damn Fine Blues”, take the listener from the south side of Chicago, through the deep south of the Mississippi Delta. You’ll stop in Memphis, Clarksdale & Bentonia, and ride to the end of the line of New Orleans, Louisiana.

All of the songs on One Heart Walkin' were co-written with songwriter and grade school friend, Chris Allen. The album of Allen/Charanghat originals came to life with the help of legendary producer & bassist Don Dixon, harmonica extraordinaire Dave Morrison, Allen on acoustic guitar, Freddie Perez-Stable on drums & members of the Revolution Brass Band, bringing in the sound of New Orleans.

Guitarist Mick Abrahams was one of a legion of young British musicians who would be introduced to the blues and heavily influenced by Alexis Korner's seminal Blues Incorporated band. Abrahams joined his first outfit, the Crusaders, with pianist Graham Waller in 1964, the band pursuing a British rhythm and blues sound not unlike Korner's. The guitarist would run through a number of similar bands before landing in McGregory's Engine with bassist Andy Pyle and drummer Clive Bunker.

Sometime during the summer of 1967, Abrahams met Ian Anderson and Glenn Cornick of a band called the John Evan Smash. Sharing an enthusiasm for blues music, the four men – Anderson, Abrahams, Cornick, and Bunker – formed the band Jethro Tull. This Was, Tull's 1968 debut album, was a stunning blend of British blues and rock that featured an unusual dynamic created by the clashing of Anderson's vocals and jazzy fluteplay and Abrahams' wiry fretwork, which was often compared favorably to Eric Clapton. Although the critically-acclaimed album would find a modicum of commercial success, tension within the band over a future musical direction would result in Abrahams leaving Tull to play the blues.

The word “authentic” is often used as a highest form of praise regarding modern music. Perhaps this is because the industry is oversaturated. Accessibility to music has mushroomed with the advent of the internet, leaving countless acts to fight for attention in an increasingly competitive market and leaving music listeners with the tasks of acknowledging those artists who are merely regurgitating something else and seeking out those artists with relevant input – the authentic articles. This elusive authenticity is part of what sets Brent Johnson out against his competition. Johnson claims that he doesn’t consciously try to emulate the bluesmen he grew up listening to, opting to write whatever songs are rattling around in his head. The resulting record, Johnson’s debut Set the World on Fire, is Johnson’s own, authentic brand of blues.

Brent Johnson is a master at nursing his songs, giving each track the time needed to develop fully. Most tracks clock in just over or just under the five-minute mark, making lots of room for instrumental portions and tight guitar work. Tracks evolve seamlessly: take the final minute of the album closer and title track, “Set the World on Fire,” which sees the song shift into a psychedelic reggae rhythm with a progression reminiscent of Supertramp. “As the Years Go Passing By” (which clocks in just over thirteen minutes) straddles the line between a quiet 12-bar jam and a guitar-happy rock track. Johnson’s vocal performance is captivating as well, with Johnson often sounding as though he were channelling Don Henley (particularly on “Don’t Take it With You”). Set the World on Fire has an incredibly developed sound, credit being largely due to his six-piece band. Some of the strongest elements come from the subtleties of a second or third guitar in the mix (the fantastic “Meet Me in the Morning” stands out for this)

Set the World on Fire is a difficult album to fault. It’s mature, developed, and definitely authentic. It does, however, suffer from the occasional track being simply forgettable. “Glass Ceiling” offers a fantastic riff from the second guitar, but the repetition feels a little tired and doesn’t do much to counter the rather generic melody and progression it supports. The quick rhythms of “The Hucklebuck” make it feel a little too much like a caricature.

Regardless, Set the World on Fire should be on your listening list. Each song is thoughtfully executed with deliberation, and the strong moments outshine the forgettable ones by a long shot. The Review: 8/10 ~Review by Richard MacDougall

Some of the time he sounds like Junior Parker - there are three Parker numbers here, including a very fine reading of 'Sitting & Thinking' - and some of the time like Muddy Waters, but to say this is not to classify Rhodes as a chameleon. He admires excellent models and some of their style has rubbed off on him without in turn erasing his own, which may be discerned in his intense, absorbed renditions of his own songs like 'Country Boy' and 'All Night long They Play The Blues'. This is deep blues music, tinted with some humour but no hilarity. The listener who agrees with the proposition in the title will like this album very much indeed.

On 2011's Bad Man's Blood, singer/songwriter/guitarist Ray Bonneville revealed himself as a songwriter in the same tradition that begat J.J. Cale: equal parts blues, rockabilly, folk, country, and R&B. On Easy Gone, he establishes that he is also a unique stylist. His words and metaphors are skeletally spare, stiletto sharp. There aren't any extended guitar breaks. His pace is unhurried and deliberate, rhythm and melody parts of the same animal. Produced with Justin Douglas, Bonneville's band is small and his grooves tight. The settings in these songs are the American highway, the road in all its seduction and fury. His traveling characters are all vulnerable to the gnawing hole of loneliness; they're hungry for connection but can only inhabit it for a moment if at all, because they're haunted -- or pursued by -- the spirits of restlessness and movement. Bonneville has always been drawn to hard-bitten characters, not for what they signify, but simply for who they are. In the first person songs here, his narrator is inseparable from them. "Who Do Call the Shots" is a snaky, mercurial blues with snarling guitar lines that testify against the harsh blackness: "Four hundred miles of dark road on this no mercy night/Lie-telling shadows tryin' to fool my eyes...Riding a line thin as razor between eternities/used up luck against a long cold sleep…" "Shake Off Them, Blues," with its slippery, sleepy NOLA R&B, is deceptive in its emotional depth. "Where Has My Easy Gone," with Eliza Gilkyson on backing vocals, is sweet, weary Americana that asks questions we all have to answer as we age. "Love Is Wicked" contains a brooding Willie Dixon-esque groove that retells the eternal "Frankie and Johnnie" story with the drama of a film noir script. "Lone Freighter's Wail" is a tender, soulful, ballad whose title image bears witness to the lost and those who will be: "I wail for the old man/Alone on a porch/looking back on/what is no more….I wail for the drifter/who is like me/no direction/or sure place to be…" Hank Williams' "So Lonesome I Could Cry," with a low-moan harmonica and silvery guitars, is a modern country-blues that exemplifies its subject matter chillingly. The murder ballad "Mile Marker 41," uses sinister slide and fingerpicked electric guitars, a tense bassline, and martial snare; it connects directly to Cale's slow-churning grooves that ratchet tension like a coiled rattlesnake. The evil in its narrative is balanced by his protagonist's suffocating, consumptive paranoia. The songs on Easy Gone depict aspects of the wandering life without romanticizing it. Bonneville skillfully strips the veneer from popular illusions about the freedom of the road. His characters choose it or are cursed by it, but either way, they accept it as the price of doing business. Easy Gone is not just another chapter in his remarkable late-blooming saga, but the finest one to date. ~Review by Thom Jurek

A masterful guitarist, Paul has been playing guitar since the age of ten. Drawing upon the influences of guitar legends such as Jimi Hendrix, BB King, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughan, Paul has honed his skill to near perfection. He honors the songs of the greats by playing them with amazing precision and at the same time, investing them with his own intense feeling. After his solos, it is not uncommon to see people cheering jubilantly while shaking thier heads in disbelief and awe.
Originally from Abbotsford BC, Paul joined his first band " Legal Tender" at the age of sixteen, playing the bass guitar. The band was a popular band at local high school dances and festivals for 3 years when he moved to the far north for a job and a re-dedication to playing guitar rather than bass. After working in a Sawmill in Ft St John BC for 2 years, Paul decided to move back to the Lower Mainland and pursue a career as a musician.
For the following 8 years Paul played in various bands working the club circuit of western Canada, honing his guitar and vocal skills and meeting many people who would become instrumental in the formation and success of Texas Flood in the years to come.
In 1993 Paul formed Texas Flood with Jerry Adolphe, veteran Vancouver drummer of well known bands "Chilliwack" and " Jim Byrnes", and fellow club musician Simon Hardman. Through the nineties Texas Flood toured relentlessly ,eventually securing the Monday night slot as a house Band at The Yale Hotel in Vancouver in the year 2000, a Monday night party that lasted three year. The year 2000 was a busy one that included a full festival tour as a backing band for Chicago lap steel legend "Freddy Roulette" and a trip late in the year to do some shows in Austin Texas, a lifelong dream of Paul's.
Through his work at The Yale, Paul struck up a friendship with Canadian rock legend "Jerry Doucette" and began to play second guitar in the "Doucette" band and continues to do so to this day. Try to catch these two, both formidable guitar talents, together onstage.
Since relocating to Alberta in 2004, Paul has continued to work steadily with Texas Flood and as of March 2014 has just released their new CD " Long Time Comin' ". Texas Flood is committed to keeping the rockin' blues alive.
