Malcolm Scarpa is a composer, guitarist and singer and is a veteran of the Madrid blues and pop scene. He is considered to be a cult artist, brilliant composer and passionate performer, unique and eccentric. Scarpa is recognized by the media, by the musicians and by a select cohort of fans but unknown to the general public.

One of the best known harmonica players in Spain, Ñaco Goñi has been in the frontline of the blues scene in the country almost from its start, approximately 30 years ago. Grown out of the once celebrated musical neighborhood Prosperidad, his trajectory has been intimately linked to Madrid's particular history, where he started out when he was about fifteen playing with older pioneers and friends like Malcolm Scarpa, Whisky David, and Tonky de la Peña (with whom he recorded the groundbreaking Blues Corner, the first blues album in Madrid).

Los muchísimos seguidores de este dúo están de enhorabuena con esta compilación no al uso que dado a la luz la discográfica vasca Gaztelupeko Hotsak. En efecto, "1980- 2000" recoge los casi 20 años de colaboración musical entre estos dos talentos madrileños que en paralelo han estado trabajando en otros frentes musicales, en especial Scarpa. La mitad de los temas de la compilación pertenecen a "Doin´ our Kind" (Cambayá,1991), "Berriz Blues Sessions" (Gaztelupeko Hotsak 1997) y el disco homónimo de Ñaco Goñi (Gaztelupeko Hotsak, 1996). Si bien las recopilaciones suelen ser subjetivas en la elección de los temas, en este caso podemos decir que ha sido de lo más acertada, aunque uno hubiera dado más margen a los temas propios, como en el caso de "Love with a feelin´" de Scarpa, no incluído. Pero ahí están "Me and my buddy", con la frescura de una primera toma de grabación, el yodel de "Long Gone lonesome blues" de Hank Williams, o el sonido delta de "Rattlesnakin´ Daddy" de Blind Boy Fuller.
Pero a este conjunto brillante de temas hay que añadir las grabaciones en directo sacadas de aquí y allá, que sin duda van a sorprender. Para empezar están las versiones de "Honest I do" y "Crawling King Snake"en registro casero con cassette mono, que nos muestran al dúo en plena fase de aprendizaje (son significativos los títulos) y que inspiran una ternura especial, con ese Malcolm cantando a voz en grito la letra. Al encanto de los balbucientes pasos musicales hay que contraponer la destreza de "The Jitter Jive", un ragtime en directo que Scarpa alterna con sonidos de blues, chasquidos de lengua, percusión del golpeador de guitarra o el vals. O "Blowing the blues" otro ragtime en el que Ñaco Goñi se nos muestra pletórico de swing. "Hot Nuts", está en la línea de canción de vodevil con letra pícara que tanto gusta a Scarpa, mientras que en "Black Snake Moan", un viejísimo tema de los años 20 a cargo de Blind Lemon Jefferson aparecen los dos músicos con la querencia por el blues más arcaico. Esta media horade música en directo bien hubiera valido un disco entero, que, repito, los seguidores del dúo van a saber apreciar.
En conclusión, diremos que "1980-2000" se configura como uno de los mejores discos de blues aparecidos en el Estado en muchos años. ~Eduardo De Mujika

With this album you’ll hear the sublime work, which has earned him great compliments and jobs accompanying artists like Johnny Copeland or Tonky Blues Band, among many others. There are quite a few original songs, which stand out including duels with Antonio Serrano, another big harmonica in Spain. "30 años..." is blues from the beginning to the end.

A life totally dedicated to the Blues. At the age of 14, in 1981, he quit school and went down into the Madrid metro to accompany singer/guitarist Malcolm Scarpa, a duo that has endured all these years. Ñaco has taken part in important musical events, with Los Bluescavidas, also with the Finn Ille Hammalainen, with Amar Sundy, with Zack Pratter, with Malcolm Scarpa (whom he recorded a second LP with: Malcolm – Ñaco “Berriz Blues Sessions”, and performed with in both the San Sebastián Jazz Festival [along with Tapia eta Leturia Jazbana] and the Getxo Blues Festival ’99). Ñaco also worked up a project with the great harmonica player Antonio Serrano called “Armónicas de fuego” (“Harmonicas of Fire”). Also participating in this project were: Pancho Company, Francisco Simón, Jose Luis Martín, Dan Rochllis, and Malcolm Scarpa.
