With a brand new CD in hand, The Strange Tones have emerged from their undisclosed secure location. And this time, they're inviting you into their home. The band’s new CD, At Home With The Strange Tones offers a rare glimpse into the lives of these Portland, Oregon-based sonic crime fighters. The Strange Tones have blended a unique concoction of original blues, rockabilly, surf, and vintage R&B, and finished it off with a private eye twist. They’ve shaken and stirred these elements into their own original sound and style known as Crime-A-Billy.
The band’s previous CDs have earned much acclaim throughout the Northwest and beyond. We're On Our Way earned the coveted Muddy Award for "Northwest Recording of the Year" by the Cascade Blues Association, while both We’re On Our Way and Crime-A-Billy made the Top 20 Chart in Spain for FM Blues Radio and on Real Blues Magazine’s Top 100 Charts. The Strange Tones step up to the plate with their new release. Their experience and continued development as a dynamic band with notorious live shows and a distinctly Northwest flavor are well captured in At Home With The Strange Tones. Special guests include keyboard legend DK Stewart and harmonica ace Jim Wallace.
"That's the Crime-A-Billy album I've been looking for…. I love that thing start to finish!" - KINK 101.9 FM, Steve Pringle
"The Strange Tones have their own unique flavor in music. Perhaps you can call it Blues Noir … this is going to be a favorite recording by the band for many years to come." - Cascade Blues Association President Greg Johnson
"This album truly captures the unique vibe of Portland and is an instant soundtrack to life and liberty here in the River City. Long live Crime-A-Billy. - Tom Addis, "Blues Palace" DJ, KMHD 89.1

18. Blue And Lonesome (6:16)

A decent early-'70s release from Billy Boy Arnold, Catfish sees the singer recording in the U.K. with Tony McPhee & the Groundhogs backing. Arnold is in fine form, with excellent harmonica playing throughout, and singing with conviction. Unfortunately, his British band is workmanlike at best, and never really catches fire. Having said that, Catfish does showcase Arnold very well, especially on "Just a Dream" and Little Walter's classic "Blue and Lonesome." Although for fans only, there's little doubt that anyone who loves postwar harmonica playing would enjoy many of the songs here. ~Review by Thomas Ward

6V6 - Fire Bottle

Released: 2003

8. World's In A Tangle [4:43]
9. Tryin' To Make A Livin' [3:45]
10. Let It Be [3:20]

The 6V6 story begins with Russell Miller, growing his own bass player. Russell has been playing guitar and singing since 1970, and most of it has been the blues. Although versatile enough to cover any style of music, he would rather sing in his blue eyed soul style to a new arrangement or tune, that swings through chord changes just a little differently than you might have heard before. It is a fresh style, and one that keeps you dancing, but impossible to realize unless you have a top caliber bass player capable of stealing lines from the likes of Ray Brown or James Jamerson. That's where 17 year old Aaron, his son, has contributed since he was old enough to perform. His incredible ear was soaking up lines and grooves from everywhere and handily applying them to his chosen trade, the bass. Father and son enjoyed playing together so much, drummer Gene Duncan, longtime band-mate of Russell's, was pressed into service to build a little three piece blues band. Gene is one of those consummate players for whom the only important thing is how good the band sounds.

After their demo CD managed to garnet airplay from the great blues DJ, Frank Black at WGLT in Normal, IL, a subsequent professionally produced CD brought appearances on nationally syndicated "Blues Deluxe" radio show and web based ABSBluesCast.com. 6V6 began to push a little farther from home doing blues festivals as far north as Wisconsin and as far south as Kentucky. Having opened for the likes of Buddy Miles, Big Mike Griffin, Walter Trout, and Jimmy Thackery led to a memorable evening of Aaron sitting in with three members of the Fabulous Thunderbirds. In 2002, 6V6 took top honors against seven top local bands in the Blues Blowtorch Society's Central Illinois Regional Blues Challenge. This sent them to Memphis to compete in the International Blues Challenge, and they represented the blues well.

The most recent addition to the band is Randy Hoffman, a seasoned bluesman having played with some top local and regional bands. He can comp the jazzy guitar chords and carry the blues rhythm right to the audience. The subsequent release of their new CD, Fire Bottle, has been placed by GLT and 101FM Teneriffe, Australia, in the Top 25 rotation as submitted to Living Blues Magazine, and has again been featured on Blues Deluxe and ABSBluesCast.com.

You may find 6V6 in some dark, out the way club, or soaking up the sun at regional blues festivals. Wherever, we can guarantee you'll be grooving big time on our blues.

Notes: This album present recordings during a three weeks stay of the Mojo Blues Band in Chicago, undoubtedly the blues metropol of the United States. Without actually having planned such a project the band decided on a spontaneous recording session.
Erik Trauner, Christian Dozzler, Markus Toyfl and Dani Gugolz experienced Chicago "live". They were invited to barbecues in the heart of the South Side, encountered living blues legends, had memorable wild jam-parties in the back yards of terrace- houses and spent long nights in black blues clubs.
Even though only little can still be heard of traditional blues in Chicago, the "Mojos" consistanly strayed in its persuit until they made the aquaintance of several musicians who may be the last of their kind.
The Mojo Blues Band invited such musicians as Willie Kent, A.C. Reed, Taildragger, Big 'Mojo' Elem and Timothy Taylor to their recording session at ACME-studios in Southport Street.
In a 16-hours-marathon recording session the different cultures, languages and mentalities melted into one another to become a friendly whole - all made possible by the common love of music. Inspiration for the title came from a gigantic gourmet fair, named "The Taste Of Chicago", presenting local restaurants and organized at the time by the City of Chicago.
Consequently, this album can be regarded as an acoustic delicacy. Furthermore this record documents the first bridge between musicians of Chicago and Vienna in the history of the blues.

In 1973, he gave up his on the road musical career to help raise his only son, Dave L. Riley, Jr. Now that his son is grown, Riley is continuing with his music career. Riley formed his own band in 1996 and soon enlisted his son, Dave “Yahni” Riley, Jr., to play bass.
In 1998 Riley’s neck was broken in a car crash with a drunken driver, ending his career at the prison and leaving him unable to play the guitar for nine months. He has now regained most of his playing ability. His first CD, Living on Borrowed Time, is the story of his own personal tragedies. His second CD, Blues Across America has been a great success. Right now he is busy touring all over the country with his band. In addition to his son, his band consists of drummer Sam Carr, and Arkansas harp man, John Weston.

Before he was old enough to legally take a drink, Tommy Bankhead was playing the blues with a long list of legendary musicians that included Howlin' Wolf, Elmore James, Sonny Boy Williamson, Joe Willie Wilkins, Robert Nighthawk, and Joe Hill Louis. He started in his teens and for half a century remained a high-caliber bluesman. A Mississippi native, he settled in St. Louis at the end of the '40s. Bankhead made a name for himself with his guitar, but he also possessed refined skill on the bass, drums, and harmonica. His few recordings include Please Mr. Foreman with the Blues Eldoradoes in 1983, and Message to St. Louis with the Cryin' Shames, which was released in 2000 by Fedora Records. In addition, Bankhead and his guitar were featured on the classic Howlin' Wolf song "Moanin' at Midnight." Just 1,000 copies were made of the album Bankhead recorded with the Blues Eldoradoes, and many of them were bought by fans at live shows throughout the Midwest. Vintage Vinyl later made the recording available in CD for at as a limited-edition.
Despite Bankhead's few recordings, he played with the best in the city, including Little Milton, Oliver Sain, Ike Turner, Henry Townsend, and Albert King. When he wasn't playing or performing, Bankhead held jobs at times as a deputy sheriff and a security guard. During the '50s, Bankhead formed his own group, the Landrockers. They played in St. Louis roadhouses and bars and sometimes headed into Illinois. When the city was still segregated, he played at such clubs as the Morocco Lounge and the Hotel Harlem. During the '90s, his health started to decline and he passed away in 2000 from respiratory failure.

[6:34] 14. Don't Change Horses

This realises the promise of Window by adding an extra ingredient: the groove. it's a groove that comes from constant work with an active working band. Saxophonist Tony Marshall and Marshall Gill, a guitarist from the BB King school of searing sweetness, fulfil most of the solo honours. Bassist Danny Blomeley and drummer Phil Considine are veterans of Victor's 'child slavery band'. And what a tight unit they are, personally and musically (groove triumphs over song on Won't Fit There). Twelve out of the 14 selections are Kyla co-writes or originate from within the Brox circle (Victor is responsible for Working On Your Love; incidentally, brother Sam is producer). Coming Home displays an empathetic Kyla, working out the work/life balance (She Knows) or her issues of self-doubt (Things I'd Change, Guilty), but also a tougher Kyla. This means that all the raunch is concentrated in one song, Do I Move You (a smouldering Nina Simone number), which actually intensifies the impact. The other cover, Don't Change Horses, is a real find. Rescued from the back-catalogue of seventies West Coast funksters Tower of Power, the song is a certified show-stopper, mixing real emotion (a plea for a second chance) with outrageous showmanship ("Giddy up, hi ho Silver…"). And, with the Blomeley/Considine rhythm team piling on the coal, it builds up a fine head of steam. If Don't Change Horses represents the zenith of the Kyla Brox Band, then Working On Your Love demonstrates the latent strength of the Kyla Brox Duo, with Kyla and Danny giving an object lesson in how less is more.

Henrik Freischlader (born November 3, 1982) is a German blues guitarist, singer, songwriter, producer, and autodidactic multi-instrumentalist from Wuppertal, Germany.
During his teenage years, he started his career as a blues guitarist and singer in bands such as Lash and Bluescream. In 2004, he formed the Henrik Freischlader Band and released his first album "The Blues" in 2006. The follow-up album "Get Closer" was released a year later in 2007. A live album then followed in 2008 entitled "Henrik Freischlader Band Live". Henrik Freischlader's style of music cannot purely be considered blues. He often blends in musical styles such as rock, jazz, soul, and funk, even though blues is the basis of all of his songs. His guitar-playing is influenced by Gary Moore, Stevie Ray Vaughan, B.B. King, Peter Green, Albert Collins, and Albert King. As he grew up, Freischlader taught himself how to play the drums, the bass guitar, the guitar, and various other instruments. On his studio album "Recorded by Martin Meinschäfer" (2009) he plays all instruments - guitars, bass guitar, drums, percussion, and hammond organ. In addition to this, he composed the songs, wrote the lyrics, produced the record, and released it on his own record label Cable Car Records. A second live album - "Tour 2010 Live" - was published in late 2010 after an extensive tour through Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. In 2011, Freischlader released the album "Still Frame Replay" on which he, again, plays most of the instruments. Moritz Fuhrhop (hammond organ) and Max Klaas (percussion) joined him in the studio for "Still Frame Replay". As special guest, his friend Joe Bonamassa plays the solo guitar on the title track.
Henrik Freischlader has played with his band throughout Europe. Current band members are Theofilos Fotiadis (bass guitar, backing vocals), Björn Krüger (drums, backing vocals), and Moritz "Mo" Fuhrhop (hammond organ). In September 2012, Henrik Freischlader Band released their latest album "House in the Woods" which was recorded live by all four band members at Megaphon Tonstudios - with additional vocal recordings. In fall 2012, they went on an extensive tour through Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Hungary, the Netherlands, and Belgium. For spring 2013, shows in the UK, Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, the Czech Republic, and Hungary have been scheduled.

Henrik Freischlader has been the supporting act for Joe Bonamassa, B.B. King, the late Gary Moore, Peter Green, Johnny Winter, and other blues legends.

If there's a pantheon for unsung blues heroes, Pee Wee Crayton belongs in it. Like T-Bone Walker, whose style Crayton's closely resembles, he came from Texas, heading for the West Coast early on. Though he recorded prolifically throughout the late 1940s and 1950s, he never quite garnered the attention he deserved. That's a shame, as Early Hour Blues--collecting several cuts from Crayton's final two albums--attests. The material is an appealing mix; Texas and West Coast, instrumental and vocal, sensual ballads and uptempo rockers, the latter of which display some impressive guitar gymnastics. Rod Piazza, who helped produce the albums from which these songs are taken, does harp duty on several tracks. This aptly titled collection is evocative of a late night in a bar, somewhere where last call happens at around 4 a.m., and is definitely worth a listen or several. --Genevieve Williams

Picking up from the first volume, which featured prewar blues harmonica tracks recorded between 1927 and 1941, this second installment covers the post-war period from 1946 to 1952, and includes interesting sides from Jazz Gillum ("Take One More Chance with Me"), Little Walter (the stately "Sad Hours"), Sonny Terry (his half-field holler "Harmonica Rhumba" is truly amazing), and the one-man bands Doctor Ross ("My Bebop Gal") and Joe Hill Louis ("Walkin' Talkin" Blues"). Mixing well-known artists with the not so well-known, this interesting compilation pulls back the curtains on a seldom investigated corner and era of the blues harmonica, and taken with the first volume, makes a fine survey of the little instrument that could. ~Review by Steve Leggett

The first ever solo album from the former Bakerloo, Colosseum and Humble Pie lead guitarist. Clem’s history also includes guest musician appearances with The Hamburg Blues Band, Jack Bruce, Billy Cobham and Dave Sancious, Roger Waters, Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, Jon Anderson, Chris de Burgh, BB King and Bob Dylan.

Recorded in late 2012/early 2013 in Germany and the UK, here is a feast of classic guitar rock that will appeal to fans of well crafted, superbly performed and produced blues and hard rock. Good songs loaded with great guitar from this fine electric guitarist.

The title of the album refers to the controversy surrounding the relationship between the media, ‘celebrities’ and members of the general public, who often feel victimised by the sometimes ruthless attention of the press. Clem collaborated with legendary Cream lyricist Pete Brown on several of the original songs.

Features guest performances by Chris Farlowe and Maggie Bell and keyboardist Ronnie Leahy. (‘Route 69’ marks the reunion of Maggie and Ronnie, who began their careers together in the legendary Stone The Crows). Chris and Maggie also feature on a new version of ‘I Don’t Need No Doctor’, the Ray Charles classic that was such a massive hit at ‘live’ performances during Clem’s time with Humble Pie.

Clem and his excellent band will be touring Europe extensively from September 2013 onwards to promote this fantastic new album.

Michigan native Laith Al-Saadi, long considered a brilliant blues guitarist and singer, gathered a band of legends for his latest effort 'REAL.' - recorded at the historic Ocean Way Studios in Hollywood, California. Joining him was a dream band of all-stars including Jim Keltner (Drums - John Lennon, George Harrison, Traveling Wilburys, Eric Clapton, etc...), Lee Sklar (Bass - James Taylor, Phil Collins, Jackson Browne, etc...), Larry Goldings (Organ - John Scofield, Maceo Parker, James Taylor, etc...), Jimmy Vivino (Rhythm Guitar, Background Vocals - Bandleader for CONAN, Fab Faux, Levon Helm, etc...), Tom Scott (Sax - Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell...), Lee Thornburg (Trumpet - Tower Of Power, Chicago...), Nick Lane (Trombone) and Brandon Fields (Baritone Sax).
Produced by Jeffrey Weber, the project was recorded live to two tracks, with no mixing, editing, overdubbing, auto-tuning, limiting and compression. “ Laith is the real deal,” explained Weber. “He has jaw dropping technique and an evocative vocal character that captures the unbridled passion of his lyrics. He made a believer out of every one of us.”
The unforgiving nature of two-track recording is a challenge for most artists, but not for Al-Saadi. “ This project is meant to celebrate the feel, joy and spontaneity of music in the moment and of the moment – which is so often lost in the sea of overproduced, auto-tuned, pieced together tracks.
The new album features all original material written by Al-Saadi except for one track - 'Ophelia', which was recorded as a tribute to one of Al-Saadi's musical heroes who passed away in 2012... Levon Helm. A collection of songs inspired by the great musical traditions of New Orleans, Chicago Blues and Southern Rock... 'REAL.' is sure to delight Audiophiles, Blues & Roots music lovers and Telecaster/Guitar aficionados alike! Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy today!!!

The REAL DEAL! "... Laith proves this every time he plugs his Tele into a Fender Amp and plays directly from his heart to your ears. Just stunning and simply beautiful at the same time. Something in the Michigan water I suspect." - Jimmy Vivino
(Guitarist/ Musical Director for the TBS late night show 'CONAN', Former member of The Levon Helm Band).

Heard this guy perform live at the Hard Rock in Orlando one night during a fund raiser. He blew the roof off the place! It was a rather sad story, however. Turns out he has Stage 4 Cancer of the Larynx, and this was one of his last shows. But holy smokes, this guy can sing some blues! The entire CD is a pleasure to listen to, and has earned a permanent position in my car's CD changer. Danny's the real deal, no doubt. Check it out:

01. Sweet Home Chicago: you've heard it before, but you haven't heard it like this. Danny brings such a rich, warm, real feel to this track that you'll believe you're sitting in a smoky blues club on the South Side in the 1960s. This was the song that hooked me at The Hard Rock.
02. Murder in the First Degree: This song is killing me! Danny spins a new twist on Murder with a bit of a rockin' feel that's sure to pack dance floors coast to coast.
03. Down at the Luau: This rockin' original is a terrific song! Think the Beach Boys meet Don Ho in Oahu in the 60s.
04. Before You Accuse Me: Bo Diddly's B-side to "Say Bossman" didn't receive worldwide recognition until Clapton covered it in the late 80s. Leave it to Danny Blues to bring it back into the limelight another twenty years later. The harmonica on this song will give you chills. It just doesn't get more bluesy than this. Six stars.
05. Sunny Side of the Blues: This has got to be one of my favorite blues songs of all times. Eirinn Abu kills it on sax, and Tony Smith nailed the mix. Wow. I think I've played this blues, soulful song ten times in a row at one point. If there were a song in the dictionary to define the blues genre, Sunny Side would be on the short list. It's that darn good.
06. Can't Rock No More: Danny Blues' original coming of age, or rather leaving age, song is a fun, lighthearted song that will have you finger snapping and leg tapping before you know it. This song has a severe hook - it'll be stuck in your head for days.
07. Slipped, Tripped, Stumbled and Fell: Danny Blues rocks out once again with this all-original soon-to-be classic song.
08. Danny slows it down again with First Thing on My Mind and dives as deep into his soul as he can hold his breath.
09. She's So Right: Danny showcases his surprising vocal range with this wonderful track.
10. You know it. You've heard it. But you ain't never heard Sweet Caroline quite like this! Neil Diamond just called, and he's jealous.
11. Christmas Blues: Wow! A Christmas Blues song! Now my collection is complete!
12. The whole room teared up leading to a standing ovation as Suzanah Free joined Danny on stage for this amazing rendition of Wonderful World. The ovation had to last at least two minutes. It was breathtaking.

Overall, LOVE this CD. And if you're a blues fan, I think you'll love it too. ~Gift Card

Chicago blues artist Jan James releases her fifth album! Limousine Blues (Blue Palace Records) is James's most traditional blues album offering 10 original songs in the roots genre.

James returns to what she calls the "front porch" of blues, referring to the Delta style popularized by artist like Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters. Recorded in Chicago at Bombay Studios.

James and her songwriting/guitarist partner, Craig Calvert have teamed up with songwriter Terry Abrahamson, known for his work on Muddy Waters' "Hard Again" release on Epic. "Build Me A Man" opens the CD, this swampy blues stomp demands a "better man" with the intention for Jan to build her own if need be. Montgomery" is an acoustic tribute to Robert Johnson, while the title track, "Limousine Blues" simmers in a much darker vein ala SRV. "I Got A Feelin'" shows the lighter side, while "Rise Above" brings blues blues blues in a classic slow thriller.

Tina Turner, Janis Joplin, The Rolling Stones’ Jan James’ performances havealways provoked these comparisons. With her sandpapered voice and tough-blossom ethos, Jan has clasped the enthusiasm and acclaim of US and European audiences to her blues-rocking heart.

The Detroit Metro Times voted her “Best Female Vocalist” just in time to send her off to her new hometown, Chicago, where she soon became a favoritein venues such as Buddy Guy’s Blues Legends, Taste of Chicago, and The House of Blues. Along the way Jan has shared the stage with greats such as Koko Taylor, BB King, The Divinyls, John Mayall, Little Feat, and James Brown.

In time the buzz spread to Europe and Jan went on to release her European debut album Last Train on the Netherlands’ Provogue label. This collection was co-produced by Jan, Craig Calvert, and well-known Chicago producer Steve Shafer. Mastered by Greg Calbi (famous for his work on classic albums by The Rolling Stones, John Lennon, Cheap Trick, and many others), Last Train’s infectious mix of flat-out rock-and-roll, blues, andheady gospel music received spirited praise from the European press.

The Rebel Blues are a staple to the Alaskan music scene. They have toured the state, recorded two albums, and played alongside acts such as Gary Hoey, Big Bill Morganfield, G.E. Smith and Moon Alice, Charlie Musselwhite and Frank Stallone just to name a few.

Now they stand poised, ready to storm the rest of the country, nay, world, playing their brand of rock-infused blues. With the headstock of the guitar pointed towards the Heavens, the keyboard amp cranked to 11 and infinity, the bass rumbling, shaking you to your very core, the drums pounding out a heavy groove, the harmonica screeching out a haunting melody and vocals tantalizing you and causing you to bob your head and nod in agreement, the boys of the Rebel Blues Band look to get their message to the masses!

They play with the intensity of one thousand suns, come hungry like the wolf, and melt faces with unforgiving relentlessness. So come, minions, and join the ever-growing Rebel Blues army as we take it to the streets! Tonight, we ride!

Rooted in a fondness and deep-seated appreciation for the forefathers of American blues, Ship it on the Frisco packs traditional blues blended with modern day roots revival into one handy musical parcel. These native St. Louisans tell modern day stories of life and love in the River City (and other midwest towns reachable by freight train). UJ Miller's vocals swim against the current with soulful purpose. Scott Neale's blues harp adds the kind of grit you would find on a diesel locomotive. Kurt Jackson's walking bass lines thumped on his homemade standup washtub bass keep the tunes driving while Rick Nenninger's drums and washboard keep a purposely simple but delightfully edgy beat. The Down Home Blues Band is a proud product of the City of Saint Louis and the life that goes along with it.

Once an eclectic group of musicians cobbled together to back Taj Mahal, the Phantom Blues Band have become a full-fledged force on their own. The sextet's third release finds these crusty roots veterans churning out a vibrant set of traditional Texas blues, gospel, Latin, and good-time swampy rocking with obvious chops, but also a live spark others in their genre often find it hard to re-create in the studio. The horns of Joe Sublett (sax) and Darrell Leonard (trumpet) bring R&B into the mix, which informs the band's sound. Solid originals like the driving "Boogah Man" and the Curtis Mayfield-styled "So Far from Heaven" combine with rearranged covers from Son House (a tough, grinding "Death Letter") and Jimmy McCracklin ("Shame, Shame" sounds like it was cut in Stax's prime) and the gospel standard "I Can't Stand It," among others. The entire group gets co-writing credit on "Change," the set's one sociopolitical commentary that touches on the economic inequality in the country today as it name-checks General Electric, the stock market, the housing crisis, and of course banks, all to a bumping, danceable beat. Even when they get serious and lyrically incisive, the music keeps the mood light and party-ready. A beautifully subtle reading of Charlie Rich's "Feel Like Going Home" displays church, pop, and country influences and Leonard's funky "Where Did My Monkey Go?" sounds like prime Crusaders, whose co-founding member Joe Sample guests on piano for "So Far from Heaven." The sound is terrific too, with full, round bass from Larry Fulcher and crisp beats from drummer Tony Braunagel that ground these songs. Three good, non-flashy vocalists including the terrific Mike Finnigan keep the groove varied, making these 50 minutes fly by. Three releases in, the Phantom Blues Band are one of the finest acts working in their crowded field, delivering the bar band rocking goods while displaying world-class chops. ~ Hal Horowitz.

Inside Out

Champion Jack Dupree - Complete Blue Horizon Sessions (Double CD)

Champion Jack Dupree was one of the first American blues performers to leave the States and settle in Europe, where racial restrictions were less prominent. Arriving on the Continent in 1959, Dupree was well established and in a good position to take advantage of the British blues boom when it hit in the early to mid-'60s. Never one to let contractual obligations stand in the way of a recording session, Dupree tracked sides for a wide array of European labels, including several for Mike Vernon's Blue Horizon Records in 1968 and 1969, which resulted in two LPs, When You Feel the Feeling You Was Feeling and Scooby Dooby Doo, a scattering of singles, and a live set for a projected third album that was never released. All of that material -- 38 tracks in all -- is presented here in this wonderfully varied two-disc compilation. Dupree began his musical journey as a barrelhouse New Orleans piano player, and elements of that driving style stayed with him throughout his 50-year recording career (he first cut a record in 1940 and was still active as a performer when he died in 1992), but along the way he also developed into a complete entertainer, exceedingly casual and comfortable around audiences, capable of delivering thundering, gutbucket blues pieces, but also able to turn things smooth and elegant (witness his almost Vegas-styled jazz take on "The Sheik of Araby," included on the second disc here). That versatility is certainly on display in this anthology, which features Dupree working both solo and with crackerjack young British blues musicians, and the live tracks included allow a glimpse at Dupree's loose and confident stage manner. Among the highlights in this well-sequenced set are his signature "See My Milk Cow," a stomping version of "A Racehorse Called Mae," a delightfully wry "My Home's in Hell," and the absolutely churning, burning, and rocking "Grandma (You're a Bit Too Slow)." Dupree's huge personality shines through in track after track, and because of that, and because of the variety of musical settings, The Complete Blue Horizon Sessions makes a nice and substantial introduction to this engaging musician.

King's third album didn't have any hits or well-known standards of his repertoire, though one of the tracks, "The Woman I Love," became a small hit after getting overdubbed years later. The influence of big band jazz is actually fairly prominent here, with saxes and trumpet playing a big part in the arrangements. Jump blues like "I've Got Papers on You, Baby" and ballads like "The Fool" veer almost as close to jazz as blues with their brassiness, though cuts like "Sweet Thing," "We Can't Make It," and "The Woman I Love" put the slow-burning, guitar-oriented blues for which King is most known closer to the core. Elsewhere King puts shades of gospel ("Come by Here") and doo wop ("I Love You So") into his brand of polished urban blues. The 2003 CD reissue on Ace adds eight bonus tracks, including previously unissued takes of "You've Been an Angel" and "Why I Sing the Blues," as well as the previously unissued "Yesterday," which comes close to pop balladry (and is not the same tune as the Beatles song of that name). Also on hand as additional items are some other odds and ends from his Modern label days that were deemed to fit in with the album's jazzy mood, including a cover of "Trouble in Mind" and collaborations with the Count Basie Orchestra (on "Everyday I Have the Blues") and the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra (on "Yes, Indeed!"). ~Review by Richie Unterberger

B.B. King (b. September 16, 1925 in Itta Bena, Mississippi) is a U.S. blues guitarist and songwriter. He is among the most respected electric guitarists; Rolling Stone magazine ranked him third in its list of the hundred greatest guitarists of all time.

Born as Riley B. King, he began broadcasting his music live on a Memphis radio station called WDIA. At first, he used the name The Peptikon Boy on air, which later was changed to The Beale Street Blues Boy, and then further shortened to just Blues Boy or B.B.

King’s first hit on the R&B charts was “Three o’Clock in the Morning” in 1951. He first found success outside the blues market with the 1968 remake of the Roy Hawkins tune, “The Thrill Is Gone”, which became a hit on both pop and R&B charts, a rare feat. King’s mainstream success continued throughout the 1970s with songs like “To Know You Is To Love You” and “I Like To Live The Love”. From 1951 to 1985, King appeared on Billboard’s R&B charts seventy-four times.

King continues to record to this day, recording both compilations of classic songs with other top artists, and new collaborative material with artists like Eric Clapton.
