Junior Watson’s Live from Outer Space is the third release on the Bluebeat Music label out of Santa Cruz, CA. The album was recorded live at the 2007 Torre Alfina Blues Festival.

Despite playing the role of perennial sideman, often in fine bands that left much to be desired in the visibility department, Mike "Junior" Watson was, and is, one of the most influential blues guitarists of his generation. In fact, following Robben Ford's defection into fusion, Watson was rivaled only by Hollywood Fats as king of the hill in California, and by Jimmie Vaughan anywhere else. While he and Vaughan have radically different approaches, Watson's arch-top-cheapo-through-reverb-tank sound has much in common with Hollywood Fats', as does his ability to nail seemingly every traditional electric blues style. But whereas Fats was a master of mimicry, Watson had a spontaneous, original bent laced with his oddball sense of humor. After starting out with harpist Gary Smith in northern California in the early '70s, he teamed with Rod Piazza's Mighty Flyers (née Flying Sauce Band) for 11 years, where he was instrumental in injecting the Chicago-styled blues band (and countless others in its wake) with ample doses of swing, culling licks from guitarists Bill Jennings, Tiny Grimes, and Billy Butler. Along the way he gigged with Charlie Musselwhite, Jimmy Rogers, Luther Tucker, and others, eventually joining the '80s edition of Canned Heat, with whom he continued to tour until the late '90s. ~Dan Forte

This entire album is a delightful, gentle blend of jump-based R&B songs with a few tender blues tunes. This all combines to make a most enjoyable CD. Given the pedigree of the assembled line-up, you cannot fail to enjoy this album. With a good choice of seldom covered material and top-shelf musicianship, these fellas have made a consistent album that fans of the genre can savor. "This becomes a swingin' blues hoot ? Catch a jazzy, swingin' jump blues sound on this disc. Great studio material that is the epitome of the West Coast jump scene!" -Big City Blues. This is the sort of music that should have almost universal appeal. "Back to Back" doesn't disappoint.

There are few words more over used and abused than the words “legend” or” legendary” as it relates to the coverage of blues music. It has rendered the word virtually meaningless. It is like an overused curse word. It should be saved and put into play at just the right time and used very sparingly or it loses its gravitas.

With this in mind, I will say without reservation or apology Junior Watson is a legend. He is on the very short list of contenders for greatest blues guitarist of his generation. Watson is held in the highest regard amongst his peers, which to be honest, he has very few…if any.

This, along with a handful of other factors, makes Nothin' To It But To Do It by Junior Watson one of most anticipated albums of 2019. Those factors are rooted in the reality that over the past 40 years Watson has been as busy as any musician in the blues field, but has recorded relatively few albums under his own name.

He was famously a founding member of the Flying Saucer Band later renamed the Mighty Flyers and then Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers. After nine years with Rod Piazza he joined the already well-established California based ensemble, Canned Heat. He stayed on with that band for another nine years. It is there he played with one of the band's founding members, the recently departed bassist, Larry Taylor.

Watson, along with Taylor, played with drummer Richard Innes in both Kim Wilson’s Blues All-Stars and The Hollywood Blue Flames led by Al Blake. He stayed busy as a reliable accompanist to harmonica players and vocalists perhaps most notably with the late Lynwood Slim. His recording credits as a featured guest artist are as long as my arm and include great recordings with William Clarke, James Harman, Fred Kaplan and others. For many years he led his own band, the Junior Watson Trio, which included bassist Kedar Roy who can be heard on this brand-new recording.

His abilities as a stellar ensemble player in the traditions of Robert Lockwood Junior, Eddie Taylor and Louis Myers are often overshadowed by his creative, wildly extemporaneous improvisational abilities as a soloist. Watson plays in the moment and he owns every note. He often incorporates a jazz sensibility to his playing in the vein of Bill Jennings, Tiny Grimes or Billy Butler for instance, but it is important to note that Watson is his own man. He has long ago developed his own voice on his instrument and has developed that most elusive quality, an instantly recognizable style.

He is the consummate blues man, but is saddled with the prefix “west coast” to describe his abilities. True, his affection for the blues of his homeland is a matter of public record, but his knowledge and abilities in all facets of blues guitar is underappreciated. His broad vocabulary on the instrument is astonishing.

He is also a very effective singer, who is generous in sharing the vocal mic on his occasional “solo” albums. He continues this tradition on Nothin' To It But To Do It.

This album, which is scheduled for an October release, lives up to its expectations. In my view, it exceeds them. Those expectations not only include the talents of this legendary musician, but the brilliance of the album’s co-producer and recording engineer Kid Andersen. Kid seems to have the Midas touch, as he has made simply one outstanding album after another, many on musicians who have only a fraction of the talent and experience of a Junior Watson.

The album’s Executive Producer is Jim Pugh. It is being released on his Little Village Foundation label. Pugh’s organ work in particular helps to make Nothin' To It But To Do It such an enjoyable record.

Like his long overdue 1994 debut album entitled Long Overdue, Watson uses two fine singers to go along with his own vocal performances on a few tracks. The album also includes some outstanding instrumentals.

Alabama Mike sings a couple of songs and his two turns behind the mic are outstanding. He is an authoritative and authentic blues singer. He has emerged as a star in the blues field over the past few years?. However, the real revelation here is Lisa Leuschner Andersen. She has sung backup vocals on a number of tunes recorded at her husband’s (Kid Andersen) Greaseland Studios in recent years, but the songs on this album represent her first blues recordings as a prominent lead singer. Her natural instrument, choices and instincts are stunning. she comes at listeners on the album's second track, the old Jesse May tune Don’t Freeze On Me like she was shot out of a cannon.

Watson again taps the talents of bassist Kedar Roy and he plays alongside drummer Andrew Guterman. Guterman is a young man from Maryland who has relocated to the San Jose area. He is a devotee of all that is good in the world of real blues drumming and that includes having some serious jazz chops. Picture a cross between S.P. Leary and Richard Innes and you get the idea. ?His versatility is a real asset when one is in the employ of Junior Watson. As far as Roy is concerned, he remains one of the best bass players working out their today. ?

Sax Gordon Beadle is also on board. This New England resident has worked with Watson for years and their mutual musical empathy is in full effect here. Fills and solos toggle between Pugh and his work on both the Hammond B3 and Farfisa compact organ, Beadle’s tenor sax and of course the electric guitar stylings of the one and only Junior Watson.

An album highlight (and there are many) is the reunion of Watson with Gary Smith who Watson calls his first boss and others simply the Godfather of the bay area blues harmonica players. Here they dust off an old Dusty Brown song from the Bandera label entitled, Well You Know.?

While there is enough fiery fret work to keep guitar geeks drooling for the next ten years or Watson’s next release, whichever comes first, that isn’t the point. Nothin' To It But To Do It is about song before solo and the selections here are simply stunning. From Watson original The Pee Wee Classic, an homage to one of his heroes Pee Wee Crayton, to a Ska version of Ellington’s Caravan to some of the most obscure covers this fan has ever heard, the song choices and sequencing are sublime.

It isn’t about new vs. old, originals vs. covers, it is about good vs. bad. Here on the brand-new Junior Watson album there is nothing but great songs played with joy and creative abandon.

Nothin' To It But To Do It receives my highest recommendation and is a serious contender for BLUES JUNCTION Productions Album of the Year. ~David Mac

With Rick Estrin offering to write the liner notes, there's a clear indication of a quality product here. Hummel's multi-harpist "Blowout" fests began modestly enough, as a special occasion for the first Martin Luther King holiday at a club in Berkeley back in 1991. It went so well that the club owner invited him to make it a regular tradition. Hummel seized on the idea, taking it on the road and extending the invitation to more and more heroic figures in the blues harp world. It wasn't long after this inception that this CD was released. Mark was riding a total high at this time and this disc demonstrates that excellently. With a great, uplifting feel, "Hard Lovin' 1990s" definitely deserves space on your shelf.

Besides their own compositions, The Red Wagons' repertoire borrows and re-elaborates, in an original way, songs of artists such as Louis Jordan, Ray Charles, Louis Prima, Buddy Johnson, Percy Mayfield, etc. The band usually performs in the most important festivals and clubs in Italy, often featuring Mitch Woods, Herbie Goins and the Chicago blues singer Deitra Farr. His guitar playing is rooted in blues, swing, jump, while occasionally taking on a television theme or throwing in some cartoonish riffing for fun.

Whatever route Junior’s strings take, he is always in command of the controls. Junior sure knows how to have fun while plying his well-honed craft. "Jumpin’ Wit Junior" reveals little twists and turns and he affords a lot of soloing time to his cohorts. Junior has a knack for making the familiar sound new and interesting.

Sophisticated, sultry, playful, and she knows how to put the jazz in blues and the blues in jazz. Adrianna Marie was made to sing this music and in her sophomore release, KINGDOM OF SWING, she is back with her dream team band. Produced by Duke Robillard, this cast is undoubtedly a roomful of blues, featuring Al Copley, L.A. Jones, Duke Robillard, Doug “Mr. Low” James, Rich Lataille,Mark Earley, Doug Woolverton, Carl Q, Junior Watson, Brian Fahey, Kedar Roy and Bob Corritore. It’s a romping, swinging and crafty album of originals and a few re-imagined covers that features Adrianna Marie singing every bit as sultry, sassy and smart as the vintage songstresses she adores so much.

The songs arrive in a variety of grooves, with subjects ranging from romance and fun (naturally) to reflections on the music itself. This album is “big” as in big band; complete with lush layered instrumentation and genre perfect chords and head arrangements, sublime solos and driving riffs. Prepare youself to be transported to a time of fast cars, strong drinks, posh night clubs and well dressed men and woman either in love or playing at it. ~by Tom Hyslop

The Hollywood Blue Flames - Deep In America (2 CD)

A tasteful and elegantly modern blues band with jazzy overtones, the Hollywood Flames came together in 1975 on the West Coast as the Hollywood Fats Band, led by guitar phenom Michael “Hollywood Fats” Mann and featuring Larry Taylor on bass, Richard Innes on drums, Fred Kaplan on piano and Hammond B-3, and harmonica whiz and vocalist Al Blake. The group specialized in a kind of informed update of the classic electric blues bands of the 1950s, but were also capable of eerily accurate acoustic versions of old country blues standards from the 1920s or shifting into New Orleans piano romps, keeping traditions alive while giving them a sonic push forward at the same time. Mann’s death in 1986 brought the band to a close until 2005 when the original members reunited as the Hollywood Blue Flames, this time with guitarist Kirk Fletcher aboard, and continued making vital blues music in the same vein as the original group.

Deep in America is the band’s third album released under the Hollywood Blue Flames name, and while it would be wrong to say that Mann isn’t missed, Fletcher plays on these tracks like the only feasible substitute. It works, and it works for the same reason the Hollywood Fats Band worked -passion and intelligence. These guys know the history of the blues but they seem to understand the genre’s emotional center as well, with tracks like the perfectly and wearily poised “Leavin’ California”, and they also don’t forget that people need to step it up and dance - check out the easily rolling piano shuffles “Crescent City Rock” and “Hushpuppy” for proof of that. A second disc is included in this package that features vintage live cuts from the original Hollywood Fats Band - so in a way, Mann is aboard here, too. /Steve Leggett, AllMusic

Mitch Kashmar is one of the finest blues singers and harp players in the world today, and a gifted songwriter to boot. But despite unanimous rave reviews for his years of performances on the stages of clubs and festivals up and down the West Coast – and no fewer than fourteen foreign countries – the big breakthrough he’s deserved for long has eluded him until now. Which is not to say he’s deservedly obscure – just ask the harshest critics of all, his fellow blues musicians. He’s shared the stage with some of the biggest names in blues over the years, including Big Joe Turner, Eddie ‘Cleanhead’ Vinson, Lowell Fulson, Jimmy Witherspoon, John Lee Hooker, Pee Wee Crayton, and Johnny Adams, among others.

Kim Wilson – no slouch on harp or vocals himself – offered this assessment: “Oh man, is he tough!” Charlie Musselwhite: “Your playing and singing are superb.” John Hammond: “…unbelievable; a great singer and up there with the best harp players I’ve ever heard.” And the late William Clarke had this to say: “Out of all the younger generation of blues harp players, Mitch Kashmar is my favorite. He’s also a first-class vocalist — his singing really knocks me out.” And Stevie Ray Vaughan paid what must be the ultimate compliment from one musician to another: “Can I sit in?” They’ve all known what the rest of the blues world is about to find out: Mitch Kashmar is a force to be reckoned with in the blues.

Personnel:
Mitch Kashmar – vocals & harmonica
Jr. Watson – guitar
Ronnie James Weber – upright & Fender bass
Richard Innes – drums
Bob Welsh – piano/guitar on "Runnin’ Off At The Mouth"

Special guest artists:
Arthur Adams – guitar & vocals on "Knock 'Em Dead"
Abu Talib – guitar & vocals on "Lizzy Mae"

Veteran straight-ahead harmonica player and vocalist Johnny Tanner steps away from his regular unit, His Aces, based in Phoenix, Ariz., for this all-star laced retrospective gathered from two California recording sessions – Pasadena in 1997 and Berkeley in 2001. The resulting product is a well-paced collection of blues that, despite sitting in the can for the past 14 years, delivers with a warm, contemporary feel.

Tanner has been active musically for the better part of the past 40 years. One of his first bands, the Seattle-based Blue Lights Band, featured Barrelhouse Chuck on keyboards, and produced one song – “When Mt. St. Helen’s Blows It’s Top” – that received wide airplay after the volcano erupted a short while later. He’s toured widely and shared the staged with a who’s who of the blues scene, including Sunnyland Slim, Lazy Lester, Lil’ Ed and Eddie C. Campbell, among many others. His harp playing is rock-steady in a traditional style on both diatonic and chromatic, and his energetic tenor vocals swing steadily throughout.

Two of the most prominent West Coast guitar players – Junior Watson in Pasadena and Rusty Zinn in Berkeley – are featured prominently throughout in sets that vary between jump and Chicago stylings. The Southern California set also includes the Hollywood Fats band rhythm section – Fred Kaplan on keys, Larry Taylor on bass and the late Richard Innes, to whom the CD is dedicated, on drums – aided by sax players Jeff Turmes and Tom Faberge. Innes also holds down the bottom on the Bay Area set with Randy Bermudes on bass. Chicago veteran Billy Flynn shares guitar duties with Zinn and takes the lead on two numbers.

The Little Walter standard “I Got To Go” kicks off the set, aided by a steady guitar-driven rhythm pattern from Zinn and Flynn, before Watson propels “Lovey Dovey” with a driving guitar solo beneath and between Tanner’s vocals. The Tanner original “Searchin’ The World Over” follows, featuring a high-register harmonica solo in the style of Jimmy Reed, as he sings about a lost love. The theme continues for the horn- and keyboard-fueled “Bring Her Back To Me.”

A traditional vocal take on Guitar Slim’s “I Done Got Over It” features the horn section before Tanner launches into “It Ain’t Right,” the first of two Little Walter covers in the set. Next up, the original, “Blue Vapor,” is a slow burner that provides plenty of space for Johnny to work out on the diatonic in a number that shines above the rest. Another tip of the hat to Chicago follows, with Tanner sandwiching covers of two Sonny Boy Williamson tunes — “Checking On My Baby” and “Stop Breaking Down,” — around Howlin’ Wolf’s “I Don’t Know.”

Two originals — “Run Around Woman” and “Lighthouse For My Soul” – bookend Little Walter’s “Nobody But You” (featuring Flynn) before another original, the instrumental “Out Arizona Way,” concludes the set.

There’s a timelessness to the blues, and that feature is clearly evident here. Available through CDBaby or Amazon, Tanner delivers a disc that’s just as fresh as the days it was recorded. Perfect for anyone who loves traditional blues delivered in a clean, uncluttered manner. Fine musicianship’s on display throughout. ~Marty Gunther

Bluesguitarists meet. Two of the most talented and dedicated norwegian bluesguitarists hooks up with Legend Junior Watson. Produced by Kid Andersen.

"Vidar Busk, Kid Andersen and Junior Watson giggle before they start playing “In The Støt,” one of 12 great songs on “Guitarmageddon.” Then they tickle the audience with some silly lyrics and a blazing barrage of pure joy from their guitars.

“Guitarmageddon” is first and foremost a blues album, but there’s a fair amount of rockabilly, too, especially on “Caveman Rock.” There’s even a little surf guitar thrown in. My favorite song on the album is “Let’s Drink … Another Bottle Of The Blues,” a scorching blues battle between Watson, a West Coast guitar wizard, and Busk and Andersen, who hail from Norway. I also love “Off the Record,” a sexy slow blues. I like the singing on the album just fine, but the guitar playing gets me so jacked up I have a hard time getting to sleep at a reasonable hour when I listen to Busk, Andersen and Watson play. And, yeah, sometimes I start giggling." ~Carl Abernathy

Lynwood Slim - Lost In America (Feat. Junior Watson)

Junior Watson, David 'Kid' Ramos,
Joel Foy & Dave Gonzales (guitar)
Fred Kaplan - Piano; Larry Taylor,
Thomas Yearsley & Tyler Pederson (bass)
Rob Stupka & Brian Fahey (drums)

Lynwood Slim was born in Los Angeles, California in 1953, as Richard Duran. He started playing the trumpet at age 12 and later harmonica when he was 15. His early influences include Jimmy Reed, Little Walter and Big Walter Horton. He played the Los Angeles music scene then moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1977 and to Amsterdam, Holland in 1988, returned to Los Angeles later that same year. He started working with Junior Watson, as well as Hollywood Fats Band alumni Larry Taylor, Fred Kaplan and Richard Innes. He became a major force on the music scene, winning awards for best blues band in 1986.

This disc would be unremarkable if not for the guitar work of Junior Watson and the producing credits of Canned Heat bassist Larry Taylor. While the mix of blues and rockabilly is fun, there is an overall sense of restraint that keeps things from really taking off. It's odd that the combination of talents assembled here sounds more like a tired bar band than a posse of blues legends.

Sonny Rhodes - I Dont Want My Blues Coloured Bright

Size: 123,7 MB
Time: 52:37
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 1976/1994
Styles: Modern Electric Blues, Texas Blues
Art: Full

01. One More Drink (2:42)

03. Just Got In (2:40)
04. All Night Long They Play The Blues (4:25)

10. Stranded (2:39)
11. Sitting And Thinking (6:50)
12. Worried Time, Hard Time (2:11)
13. Next Time You See Me (3:34)

Some of the time he sounds like Junior Parker - there are three Parker numbers here, including a very fine reading of 'Sitting & Thinking' - and some of the time like Muddy Waters, but to say this is not to classify Rhodes as a chameleon. He admires excellent models and some of their style has rubbed off on him without in turn erasing his own, which may be discerned in his intense, absorbed renditions of his own songs like 'Country Boy' and 'All Night long They Play The Blues'. This is deep blues music, tinted with some humour but no hilarity. The listener who agrees with the proposition in the title will like this album very much indeed.
