Henderson is a Texas blues artist who, in the 50's and 60's, gained a reputation in and around Texas, moved to California, signed a record deal, recorded one fairly well received LP, then proceeded to nearly succumb to heroin, divorce, etc. He withdrew from the musical forefront, working for many years in the Texas oil fields, before moving to the UK in the 90's and rediscovering his musical heart. "The Wilderness Years" is an intensely autobiographical work which chronicles Henderson's journey from the brink of destruction to acceptance/redemption in his 50's. While he is a very fine guitarist and singer and backed by a strong band, it is the brilliant song writing of this collection that make it truly something special. The set begins with "Song For My Father", an up tempo Texas rocker, which recounts Henderson's last conversation with his terminally ill Father. The listener will barely have time to absorb the words of wisdom given to TW by his Father when the intro sounds for track number two. At this point, I advise you to stop all that you are doing and focus your attention on a truly remarkable piece of work titled "Black and White". It is a story about Albert Pope, Jr, a friend of Henderson and fellow musician, who remained bitter and angry for most of his life because of an old Texas census law that once required that anyone of African descent be counted as two-thirds of a person. The lyrics are powerful and emotionally delivered by Henderson's passionate vocals. You will perceive in his voice Henderson's own personal feelings of bitterness as he cries out for justice like the blood of Abel through the chorus of the song and the words "How could anyone dare to measure two-thirds of a man?".
