It's a question every artist has to grapple with: If you're not pushing yourself creatively, how can you grow? That's exactly what Paul Gilbert tackles—with fervor—on his new solo album, I Can Destroy.

On the album, which was produced by Kevin Shirley (whose credits include Mr. Big's 2011 album, “What If”), Gilbert cuts a wide swath of styles and textures. There's the full-frontal assault of “Everybody Use Your Goddamn Turn Signal,” the jazz-blues lament of “One Woman Too Many” (which also features Gilbert's patented Makita drill-bit riffery) and the gut/heart punch of “I Am Not the One (Who Wants to Be with You).” Its playful title references the ubiquitous Number 1 hit Gilbert enjoyed as lead guitarist for Mr. Big.

Paul Gilbert, Jimi Kidd - Raw Blues Power

Bitrate: MP3@320K/s
Time: 43:30
Size: 99.6 MB
Styles: Blues rock
Year: 2002

[3:44] 1. Girls Watching
[3:40] 2. A 180
[2:59] 3. Pacific Coast Highway
[6:27] 4. Good Foot
[3:49] 5. 12 Days Of The Blues

[3:28] 7. Stranded
[2:49] 8. Play Guitar
[3:07] 9. Sookie Sookie
[9:27] 10. Blues Power

There was almost certainly a lot of lip-pooching going on at the sessions for Raw Blues Power, which teams shred virtuoso Paul Gilbert with his uncle and childhood hero, Jimi Kidd, for a disc of blues-rock. The results certainly sound nothing like anything resembling traditional blues, instead gravitating more toward the late 20th century bastardization of the genre as a platform for fast playing. Accepting that as a genre of its own, Raw Blues Power contains some fine dual playing from Gilbert and Kidd. The songs are mostly interchangeable and veer toward power pop at times (such as the anthemic "Freedom"). For Gilbert, late of Mr. Big, the project is surely a step in an interesting -- or at least new -- direction. The record doesn't necessarily push in bold new directions, but it's well played, well produced, and the musicians are clearly having a good time at the gig. ~Jesse Jarnow

Jeffology: "A Guitar Chronicle" is a tribute to Jeff Beck, one of the greatest blues/rock guitar players in rock history, and features Gregg Bissonette, Bruce Bouillet, Vivian Campbell, Phil Collen, Warren DeMartini, Tony Franklin, Paul Gilbert, Jake E. Lee, Steve Lukather, George Lynch, Mick Mars and more! Only five of the eleven songs are instrumental ("Led Boots" with Campbell, "Cause We've Ended As Lovers" with Collen, "Head For Backstage Pass" with Bouillet, "Rice Pudding" with Lee, and "Behind The Veil" with Lukather), a bit odd since Beck was more noted for his instrumentals, and didn't sing himself for the most part. However a fine collection of tracks in honor of the legendary, influential English guitarist.
