Peter Karp - Blue Flame

Size: 123,9 MB
Time: 52:59
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2018
Styles: Electric Blues, Blues Rock
Art: Full

01. Rolling On A Log (4:19)
02. Train O'mine (2:57)
03. Your Prettiness (4:12)
04. Valentine's Day (3:17)
05. Treat Me Right (4:53)
06. The Turning Point (4:13)
07. Loose Ends (3:58)
08. The Arson's Match (3:26)
09. From Where I Stand (4:16)
10. You Know (3:51)
11. The Nietzsche Lounge (3:45)
12. Round And Around (6:49)
13. Young Girl (2:56)

This one follows just about a year later from Alabama Town and although diehard Karp fans will recognize several of these songs, they are recorded here in a new session with various star-studded guests. Like its predecessor, this one features Mick Taylor, Todd Wolfe, Paul Carbonara, and Dennis Gruenling. New guests include Dave Keyes and Kim Wilson. More than ever before, Karp displays his multi-instrumental skills handling multiple guitars, organ, piano, accordion, and harmonica. He also has a core band handling rhythm, keyboards and mandolin across his mix of blues and roots tunes – with the accent where he wants it—on his songwriting.

Karp’s eye for detail, the range of emotions, and clever sense of humor prevail. While the album may have benefitted from more new material, there are some real gems here that make this a strong effort. Listening to Mick Taylor solo on “The Turning Point” is always enjoyable. Kim Wilson takes his spot-on harp solo in “The Arson’s Match” and Dennis Gruenling’s harp colors “Your Prettiness” and “From Where I Stand,” two of the best tracks. Throughout Karp impresses with his expressive voice and passionate playing.

Karp has led a nomadic life, played with many great artists and has a well of experience to draw from. His wordplay is quite good. In fact, one of my favorite songs of his is “Dirty Weather” from his Blind Pig album Shadows and Cracks, one that I wish he would have reprised here. In any case, there’s bristling animation and energy in these baker dozen’s tunes that surpasses much of Karp’s previous work. It’s apparent immediately with Karp’s opener, “Rolling on a Log,” with its swirling B3 and Kim Wilson’s harp. The energy rarely lets up except when called for on tunes like “Valentine’s Day” and the mandolin-driven “From Where I Stand.” Karp’s personas of an amped-up bluesman and charismatic singer-songwriter are both well represented here. ~Jim Hynes

Black Cat Bone has been Southern Germany's best blues-rock group since the early 1970s. Taylormade, their fifth album, was recorded and released in Germany in 1997. In 1995, Black Cat Bone met former Rolling Stones member Mick Taylor at a festival in Switzerland. Taylor had always been one of Hans-Joerg Mueller's heroes, and a dream came true when he agreed to participate in the recording sessions for this album. With excellent production and crystal-clear sound, this disc is highly recommended to all lovers of intelligently performed rock and blues. /Amazon

05. You Shook Me (13:02)
06. Can't You Hear Me Knockin' (11:43)

There's a bit of false advertising behind the 2003 double-disc Mick Taylor release, Shadow Man. The album in question is not a Taylor solo recording, but rather it features Taylor as a sideman, to a singer named Sasha Gracanin. It turns out that Gracanin specializes in an over-the- top R&B style of singing, and hogs most of the spotlight. And as evidenced on such tracks as "Turn Off the Light" and "Shadow Woman," leaves little space for Taylor's guitar. Expectedly, there is, of course, the obligatory Stones cover -- "Honky Tonk Woman" -- which shouldn't come as a surprise. The second disc of the set fares far better, as it's the six-track live set, 2003's 14 Below, which allows Taylor more than enough room to do his thang. Certainly not the best Taylor release out there, but may appeal to Stones obsessives. ~by Greg Prato

John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers And Friends - 70th Birthday Concert (2 CD)

Though almost always well-intentioned, events like this usually don't pan out on record, let alone on DVD. Thankfully, this is not one of those occasions. John Mayall in his 70th Birthday Concert is as spry, ferocious, and on top of his game as ever. There is nothing tired about the presentation or the performances. Mayall's own umpteenth version of the Bluesbreakers is yet another example of his uncanny ability to pick the right cats for the job. They play with plenty of fire, brilliant musicianship, and taste. There are two discs in this package encompassing 19 cuts. The show broke down as follows: the bland play two burning tracks on their own - "Grits Ain't Groceries" and "Jacksboro Highway" - before Mayall joins them for three, including a stunning rendition of "Dirty Water".

Mayall then invites Mick Taylor to the stage for no less than four cuts - two of which are "Blues for the Lost Days," and "Oh Pretty Woman". But it gets better. Eric Clapton and Chris Barber join the Bluesbreakers for seven cuts - "Hideaway" (what else?), and a beautiful duet performance of "No Big Hurry" between Eric and John. Both Clapton and Taylor are in hungry, fine form, and hold nothing back. The last finale features Taylor and Clapton, and is a guitar orgy, as one would expect. What it all adds up to, however, is a stinging, overdriven performance of modern electric blues by a master bandleader who shows no signs of slowing down physically, and most importantly, creatively. Highly recommended. /Thom Jurek, AllMusic

John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers - Crusade

Year: 1967
Bitrate: MP3@320K/s
Time: 45:49
Size: 107,5 MB
Styles: Blues
Scans: Full

1. Oh, Pretty Woman (3:40)

9. I Can't Quit You Baby (4:35)
10. Streamline (3:19)
11. Me And My Woman (4:05)
12. Checkin' Up On My Baby (3:59)

The final album of an (unintentional) trilogy, Crusade is most notable for the appearance of a very young, pre-Rolling Stones Mick Taylor on lead guitar. Taylor's performance is indeed the highlight, just as Eric Clapton and Peter Green's playing was on the previous album. The centerpiece of the album is a beautiful instrumental by Taylor titled "Snowy Wood," which, while wholly original, seems to combine both Green and Clapton's influence with great style and sensibility. The rest of the record, while very enjoyable, is standard blues-rock fare of the day, but somewhat behind the then-progressive flavor of 1967. Mayall, while being one of the great bandleaders of London, simply wasn't really the frontman that the group needed so desperately, especially then. Nevertheless, Crusade is important listening for Mick Taylor aficionados. /Matthew Greenwald, AllMusic
