Maarud is known to many as one of the best blues guitarists in Norway. He has toured domestically and internationally with various bands, to the delight of their audiences and the press. The concerts are invariably described as potent live show which combines various elements from blues to psychedelic rock.

Together with his brother Henrik Maarud (drums), he started the band «MaarudKara» at the age of six. The band came second in the Talentiaden (1997) on NRK, and released the album First Blues the year after. In 2000 he started his solo career backed by his band A. M. Band, still with his brother drummer and with blues in their repertoire. The band released two albums Ripped, Stripped & Southern Fried (2003) and Commotion (2004), and was nominated for the Spellemannprisen 2003 in the class Blues/country for the debut album Ripped, Stripped & Southern Fried. In 2006 he initiated the bandet The Grand, with the same lineup as A. M. Band, but had a more rocky and psychedelic expression. The band released the album The Grand (2007).

The Notodden Blues Festival, founded in 1988, has hosted dozens of artists from Mississippi, including B. B. King, Otis Rush, Bo Diddley, Pinetop Perkins, James Cotton, Bobby Rush, Charlie Musselwhite, and Super Chikan. In 1996 Notodden and Clarksdale, Mississippi, became sister cities, and cultural exchanges have included performances by Norwegian artists at Clarksdale’s annual Sunflower River Blues and Gospel Festival.

Norway is both geographically and culturally distant from Mississippi, but as the popular Notodden Blues Festival demonstrates, there seem to be no boundaries for the appreciation of the blues. African American entertainers were performing in Norway by the end of the nineteenth century, and blues was featured on traveling vaudeville shows and musical revues such as “Plantation Days” and “Chocolate Kiddies” that toured Scandinavia in the 1920s. The Mississippi-based Utica Jubilee Singers appeared in Norway in 1930, and in 1937 the swing band of Mississippi native Jimmie Lunceford, which included blues in its repertoire, began its first European tour with two performances in Oslo. The first American solo blues artist to appear in Norway was Josh White, who visited Oslo in 1950, and during the latter 1950s blues vocalists Joe Williams, Jimmy Rushing and Big Joe Turner (with pianist Pete Johnson) all appeared on jazz shows.

Amund Maarud (git/voc) Henrik Maarud (drums), Simen Aanerud (piano) og Bendik Brænne (sax) Egil Stemkens (bass).

With the album ”Electric” Amund Maarud (30) is kind of back where he started deeply into the blues tradition. The album marks Amund´s 20 years as a blues musician with release as early as the age of 10! However for those who think this is a regular blues release, do think again. There are a variety of styles on this album, and people in guitar rock tradition will probably note this as a rock release. Amund Maarud first started in the band Maarudkara at the age of 6 with his brother Henrik on drums and his father on bass. They came second on the yearly talent competition on NRK in 1997 and released the first album ”First Blues” the year after. Later he had his youth playing in the houseband at the Oslo´s legendary blues club Muddy Waters.

”Some choices you just make without considering options. When I was 10 I just decided to become a bluesguitarist fulltime. It didn't seem any more strange to me than the wish to become a fireman” says Amund Maarud.
