lending the regional blues style of his native St. Louis with strains of gritty Southern rock and country, Jeremiah Johnson cut his teeth on the Gulf Coast blues circuit before returning to Missouri and launching a successful career in the 2010s. He established himself with a series of independent albums and signed with German blues specialists Ruf Records, which released highlights like 2018's Straitjacket and 2020's chart-topping Heaven to Betsy. Johnson returned in 2022 with the crafty Hi-Fi Drive By.

Named by his father after the titular character in the 1972 Robert Redford western, Johnson began playing at a young age, studying jazz during his college years, then playing in a number of rock bands. He migrated to blues music while living in Texas' Gulf Coast region, and in the mid-2000s took home first place in the Houston Blues Society Regional Blues Challenge for three years in a row. By the end of the decade, he'd returned home to St. Louis and formed the Jeremiah Johnson Band. Combining his love of electric blues with the St. Louis sound, he folded in elements from his rock years along with jazz and country influences, releasing a pair of independent albums, 9th & Russell (2010) and Brand Spank'n Blue (2011), backed by regional horn section the Sliders. His career received a boost in 2014 when Australian filmmaker Gary Glenn made Johnson the subject of his documentary Ride the Blues, which featured a live concert and a series of interview segments about Johnson's career trajectory. It set the table for his first solo release, Grind, which arrived the following year and was produced by Devon Allman, son of guitar legend Gregg Allman. In addition to receiving heavy airplay, the album hit number eight on Billboard's Blues chart. Working again with his backing band, his 2016 release Blues Heart Attack fared even better, reaching number five on the same chart and featuring a wider array of his different musical styles. Johnson signed with Germany's Ruf Records in 2018 and worked with fellow St. Louis bluesman Mike Zito to record his next release, Straitjacket, before touring Europe the following year.

In early 2020, Johnson hit a new career peak when his album Heaven to Betsy topped the Billboard Blues chart. After his European support tour was cancelled due to the global pandemic, he quickly returned to the studio and recorded the lean back-to-basics set Unemployed Highly Annoyed which came out in October of that year. 2022's Hi-Fi Drive By continued Johnson's streak of quality releases and featured guests like pianist Victor Wainwright and harmonica player Brandon Santini. ~ Timothy Monger

Jeremiah Johnson - Unemployed Highly Annoyed

Talented singer-songwriter and guitarist Jeremiah Johnson returns with Unemployed Highly Annoyed, his second album of this year and a personal response to the unprecedented coronavirus pandemic. One of the hottest prospects on the blues scene over the last decade, Mississippi native Johnson knows a thing or two about hard work. By all accounts, Johnson has come up the hard way, day-jobbing as a billboard labourer while recording and self-releasing some fine blues records. That hard work paid off when 2015s Grind hit big on the Billboard Blues Chart, and since then Johnson has gone from strength to strength. With this year’s earlier release, Heavens To Betsy riding high and a full European tour scheduled to back it up, 2020 was set to be a stellar year for Johnson. That is, until Covid-19 hit the brakes.

Johnson’s response has been to get creative. This is a true ‘lock-down recording,’ with a what-you-see-is-what-you-get aesthetic and a group of just three musicians comprising of, Johnson, (Devon Allman Project alumni) Tony Antonelli on percussion, and multi-instrumentalist Paul Niehaus IV (head of the Blue Lotus Recordings label) on bass and keys. Niehaus also handled production, recording and engineering, of which Johnson states: “We weren’t worried about the “perfect” notes and achieving that “polished” sound. We love the passion and energy of the songs, so we kept it as live as possible,”

For a three-piece, the band certainly kicks up a storm. “Burn Down The Garden” races out of the tracks with a good dose of high-energy rock before smoothing out into an upbeat ballad, with plenty of kick, some nice breaks and sparkling guitar. “Seems like the whole world’s breaking down,” sings Johnson, “I have a little faith things will come around.” Johnson’s writing and arranging is uniformly strong throughout this set. He knows when to change gears, when to stoke the fire and when to let it glide, providing plenty of variety to keep a listener interested.

The title-track smoulders wonderfully, a swaggering, sweaty rocker with energy and joyous ferocity, which brings to mind Elvis Presley’s rejuvenating sessions at Stax. These really are top-class musicians, a power-trio who manage to generate more lightning than bands twice their size. “Have a little faith, in the human race.” Johnson’s voice, often overshadowed by his passionate guitar, is worthy of singling out. It cuts through the storm very effectively; strong and on-point. That said, some of the best moments on this record come from the group’s extended instrumental jams. There’s a delightful level of empathy here; Johnson, Antonelli and Niehaus sound like they’ve been jamming together for decades. They play tight and sound loose, in the best possible sense.

“Love and Sympathy,” possibly the mellowest track, loses none of its potency for being taken at a slower tempo. Johnson never over-sells the pathos and, even in first gear, the band inject enough muscle and tension to keep things rolling nicely. “You miss your family, I miss mine too.” It’s a sentiment many of us will recognize. Johnson delivers the message with honesty and sincerity. The album ends on an upbeat with “Rock ‘n Roll for the Soul,” an all-out blast of shameless rockabilly and a paean to the mid-fifties revolution. Full of Chuck Berry riffs and Little Richard energy, it’s a great way to close the show.

Everything that it does, Unemployed Highly Annoyed by Jeremiah Johnson does well. Rock fans in need of solace, escapism, fun or an adrenalin-shot to the system will find it all here. Johnson has used his lock-down time well. ~Chris Wheatley

Some artists need smoke and mirrors. All Jeremiah Johnson needs are songs. In the age of manufactured pop, the acclaimed St. Louis bandleader is a beacon of time-honored songcraft, writing on acoustic guitar, digging deep for raw lyrics and insisting on studio production that bottles the sweat of his shows. The approach might sound old-school, but on latest record Heavens To Betsy, the result is some of the most vital music of the new decade. Released in 2020 on Ruf Records, Heavens To Betsy is another bold creative leap for an artist on fire. It's been just two years since Straitjacket hit #6 on the Billboard Blues Album chart and scored rave reviews across the board (Blues Blast: "This is grade-A primo stuff"). It was the cherry on top of Johnson's triumphant early career, following up 2014's Grind, 2016's varied Blues Heart Attack, and the confessional Ride The Blues documentary. But while Johnson is rightly proud of that early catalogue - and still serves up house-rocking takes on the Straitjacket material each night - he's always kept one eye on the horizon. "On Heavens To Betsy, I wanted to try something different than any of my previous releases. I really took the 'song first' concept and got back to my roots in blues-based Southern rock." The specter of the US South can be felt in every fiery lick and blue-collar observational lyric. Yet Heavens To Betsy is no exercise in autopilot roadhouse blues. The raging sax of Frank Bauer, either backing up or butting heads with Johnson's driving guitar, has always given the band an added dimension, and with the addition of former Devon Allman percussionist Tony Antonelli, the groove.

Born and raised in St. Louis, Jeremiah Johnson is the voice of Mississippi River blues blending with the struggles of everyday life. He began learning guitar at age 6, drawing inspiration from his rich St. Louis blues heritage and legendary guitarists, like Alvin Lee, Eric Clapton and Hank Williams Sr. and Jr. With these influences, Johnson began building his musical foundation.

After relocating to Houston, TX, in 1999, Johnson finished in first place for three consecutive years at the Houston Regional Blues Challenges, sponsored by the Houston Blues Society. During his 10 years there, Johnson merged Texas style with St. Louis blues to create the unique sound you hear today.

In 2011, Johnson was the proud winner of the St. Louis Blues Society IBC Challenge and went on to the semifinals to represent St. Louis in Memphis, TN. One year later, Sirius XM’s B.B. King’s Bluesville picked up the Jeremiah Johnson Band, where they can be heard nationwide, as well as on Touch Tunes Jukeboxes in bars and clubs and on radio stations across the country.

Boasting a five album discography, Johnson performs with Benet Schaeffer (drums), and longtime band mate Jeff Girardier (bass), bringing the Jeremiah Johnson Band to its rockin’ bluesy peak.

Grind, Johnson’s latest CD, produced by Devon Allman, features Grammy award winner Yonrico Scott on drums. Grind has been featured on SiriusXM’s B.B. King’s Bluesville, and on the international radio show “Confessing the Blues”, broadcasting on 50 stations in 10 countries worldwide. Grind reached the #8 slot on the Billboard Blues Charts the week of November 7th, 2015.

In September 2014, Johnson filmed his docu-concert, Ride the Blues, directed by Australian Producer/Director Gary Glenn, at the historic Capitol Theater in downtown Burlington, IA. The film is live music video about Johnson’s rise to prominence, featuring intimate interview segments, still photography, guitar solos and stunning vocals. Donations from concert attendees were generously given to the theater and to the National Blues Museum, connecting Johnson’s roles of musician and music advocate.

JJB is currently recording a new album with Connor Ray Music, scheduled to come out this Spring.
