10. Change Of Heart (3:44)

Joanne Shaw Taylor's soulful vocals and lead guitar style drew praise from Annie Lennox and Stevie Wonder at the outset of her career, but she's earned her stripes the old-school way, putting in the hard yards on the road and in the studio. That said, there's nothing workmanlike about her song-focused approach to the blues, invigorated on Heavy Soul by the self-imposed challenge of attempting to blend the soul-pop direction of Nobody's Fool (2022) with her blues roots.

Such an experiment could miss both targets, but Shaw Taylor achieves a seamless fusion that's a natural fit for her smoky vocal tone and stinging, articulate lead guitar lines, shading the blues-informed chord sequences of 10 filler-free songs with Motown-style beats (Drowning In A Sea Of Love) and gospel backing singers (Sweet 'Lil Lies, Wild Love). Heavy Soul strikes a winning balance between maturity and raw, gut-punch blues. /Rich Davenport, Classic Rock

10. The Leaving Kind (4:02)
11. New Love (4:06)

After eight acclaimed studio albums and an electrifying live set, Joanne Shaw Taylor has positioned herself at the forefront of the contemporary blues-rock revival. For her latest release, Nobody’s Fool, the two-time British Blues Awards Vocalist of the Year has reunited with producers Joe Bonamassa and Josh Smith to explore a “retro pop” style with synth keys, heavy bass beats, and even a guest cellist. Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics also guests.

While Nobody’s Fool focuses as much on JST’s vocal and song-writing talents as on her fretboard wizardry, it’s still a guitar lovers’ album. There’s guest shots by Joe Bonamassa and Bones UK guitarist Carmen Vandenberg, but JST spices most of the tracks with her lethal Telecaster snarl. Nobody’s Fool should win JST a broader audience while delighting her existing fan base.

Producers Bonamassa and Smith contribute on guitar, and they’ve assembled a distinguished group of sidemen: drummer Lemar Carter has worked with everyone from Carrie Underwood to Mick Jagger; Calvin Turner who contributes the dynamic bass grooves, tours with Bonamassa’s band; and Deron Johnson, who has performed with Stanley Clarke, David Sanborn, and Miles Davis, adds his impressive keyboard skills to the mix.
The title track, “Nobody’s Fool” has a country-rock feel and revolves around a strong chorus, country-flavoured bottleneck guitar, and kick-ass drumming from Lemar Carter.

“Fade Away” is a JST original, written in memory of her mother and dwells on the way that time sweeps away our fleeting opportunities for communication with loved ones. It’s a song that could pass for modern country, and provides JST with an opportunity to showcase her considerable vocal chops. She delivers a throaty, smoky performance over acoustic guitar, piano, and Tina Guo’s cello. Cellist and pianist create a crystalline backdrop for JST’s fingerstyle arpeggios and heartfelt vocal.

“The Leaving Kind” is another wistful ballad with a chorus that haunts the listener’s mind. Unlike “Fade Away”, however, this song ends with a brief but searing solo that reminds us of JST’s powers as a lead guitarist.

JST gets back into her wheelhouse on “Then There’s You” and shows off her abilities as a blues/R&B vocalist. Drummer Carter and bassist Calvin Turner provide a rock-solid foundation for her performance and having Bonamassa and Smith playing rhythm doesn’t hurt.

Dave Stewart, of the Eurythmics, discovered JST when she was a teenage Joannie B. Goode and has been a mentor to her ever since. He’s back to help out on “Missionary Man”, providing a tidal rush of synth keys over the bass-heavy rhythm. It’s the only track on the album that isn’t a JST original, but it fits the overall feel of the set well.

“Just No Getting Over You (Dream Cruise)” and “Won’t Be Fooled Again” give us two sides of a painful break-up. “Just No Getting Over You”, as the title implies, embodies the ache of lost love, while “Won’t Be Fooled Again” offers an uplifting lyric and features a tasty solo as Bonamassa steps out of the producer’s booth and straps on his axe.

“Bad Blood” opens with an Ennio Morricone spaghetti-western riff that takes us into a memorable, hooky chorus. It’s a mid-tempo rocker enlivened by serious Duane Eddy twang and choral support from a girl-group trio, and it’s another song that should appeal to a general audience. JST’s fills and brief solo are inspired here, as is her smooth-but-urgent vocal.

“Figure It Out” is an up-tempo rocker with another strong chorus. The back-up trio echoes JST’s vocal effectively, and Lemar Carter drives the bus with creative fills and a rock and roll backbeat. This number introduces another Brit prodigy, Carmen Vandenberg, who collaborated with Jeff Beck on his Loudhailer album. Vandenberg salts her licks with distortion and dissonance, giving the song a punk/metal edge.

How should an album of songs that focuses on lost love and vanished opportunities end? With an upbeat affirmation of the possibility of new romance and better days ahead, of course. “New Love,” as the title suggests, wraps up JST’s latest offering on a high note, with driving rhythms and a horn-driven chorus behind Shaw Taylor’s six-string heroics.

It’s an enjoyable counterpoint to Joanne Shaw Taylor’s straight-ahead blues-rock repertoire, and it gives us a sense of some of the ideas she may develop in the future. Don’t miss it. ~Stephen Guppy

3. Send Me A Doctor (with Eric Sardinas) (4:07)
4. Put Your Hands Out Of My Pocket (5:30)

11. I Shoot You Down (with Eric Sardinas and Erja Lyytinen) (4:34)
12. Just As I Am (with Coco Montoya and Shakura S'Aida) (6:23)

Meena first played in a band when she was fifteen. She developed into a wanderlust type and studied in Africa, the United States and Vienna, among other places. In the US, Chicago stole her heart for its atmosphere and blues music. Because of her temperament and good voice, several people wanted to make her a second Tina Turner or Janis Joplin, but when Thomas Ruf came across her it was the blues that would determine her life. On the CD 'Try Me' we hear a singer with a beautiful, sometimes somewhat melancholy voice. Most of the songs have a calm and compelling tempo. The title song is a good example of this. There are also several beautiful guitar solos on this CD by Coco Montoya, Eric Sardinas, Joanne Shaw Taylor, Erja Lyytinen and Chris Fillmore. These kind of solos are always very pleasant to listen to and never get boring. A well-known cover on this disc is 'I'd Rather Go Blind'. It may not be the most beautiful version I know of this song, but this version is very beautiful and penetrating. 'Try me' is a CD that is more than worth listening to.

Joanne Shaw Taylor's "The Blues Album" is much more than a mid-career shrug of the shoulders. A decade on, most of Britain’s noughties blues cubs have strayed from the genre that launched them. But while Oli Brown’s rebirth as a Mephistopheles-bearded berserker in RavenEye has stuck, the equally questing Joanne Shaw Taylor’s latest album – with Joe Bonamassa at the desk – reaffirms her vows. For many a musician at their career mid-point, a blues covers album is a creative shrug of the shoulders. Shaw’s feels different, firstly because she gives less weight to the sacred cows, and mostly picks the cultsters you can kick around without the purists pissing blood.

A louche take on Little Milton’s "If That Ain’t A Reason" is perfect for Taylor’s smokering vocal, while Little Village’s "Don’t Go Away Mad" is sufficiently obscure for her to claim ownership. Even when it’s a big name, Taylor takes the road less travelled: for example covering not Fleetwood Mac’s "Need Your Love So Bad", but that ’68 single’s B-side, "Stop Messin’ Round" – and kicks its teeth in. As a back-to-basics statement, this album is hard to beat. /Henry Yates

Having famous fans such as Joe Bonnamassa and Glen Hughes and being described by Jools Holland as a dazzling talent, it’s hard to deny that Joanne Shaw Taylor has certainly mastered her craft and become one of the worlds most formidable guitar players. Having signed to Sony/Silvertoneat the beginning of 2018, Joanne is back for her 6thalbum, ‘Reckless Heart’ which was recorded during the summer of 2018 at Rust Belt Studios in Michigan.

Joanne is thrilled to be releasing her new album: "I decided for this album I wanted to go further back to my roots. A large part of that was my decision to work with Al Sutton. Al’s been a good friend of mine since I moved to Detroit in 2008 and I’ve always been a big fan of his work with the Detroit Cobras, ThornettaDavis and most recently Greta Van Fleet. Working together was something we’d always discussed and in particular that he’d like to hear me do something more raw and live. The other main reason for recording in Detroit was the calibre of musicians in that town, and we were lucky enough to score some of the best in Ron Otis, James Simonson, Phil Hale and Chris Codish. I couldn’t be happier with it; we managed to incorporate my love of soul, blues and rock into the album and I think it’s probably my most honest work to date.

Joanne Shaw Taylor - Almost Always Never

Year: 2012
Bitrate: MP3@320K/s
Time: 64:38
Size: 148,5 MB
Styles: Blues-rock
Scans: Full

1. Soul Station (6:16)
2. Beautifully Broken (5:48)
3. You Should Stay, I Should Go (4:09)
4. Piece Of The Sky (3:51)
5. Army Of One (5:16)

9. A Hand In Love (3:39)
10. Standing To Fall (6:47)
11. Maybe Tomorrow (6:31)
12. Lose Myself To Loving You (5:25)

Joanne Shaw Taylor has the looks of a cherub, with a round baby face and a shock of blonde hair that makes her look even younger than her 26 years. But when she picks up her guitar and starts tearing into a tune, she channels the sweaty energy of a smoky blues bar at midnight. Her singing is just as gritty and soulful, a throaty growl that conveys the blistering emotions that are her stock in trade. She doesn't waste any time getting down to business.

The album opens with "Soul Station," an ode to recovery and salvation, but the extended solo she lays down to close the tune sounds like a battle between angels and demons with its shrieking bent notes and searing distorted arpeggios. Having made her point with her opening volley, Taylor shows more restraint on the rest of the album, although her playing is always just as impressive. "You Should Stay, I Should Go" is a sparse R&B shuffle with some good Hammond B-3 by David Garza and a short sharp blues-rock solo.

"Standing to Fall" is a slow funky rocker that includes a long break that plays off Taylor's short bursts of bent-note arpeggios against Garza's sideshow Hammond and Billy White's ominous bass guitar, while "Army of One" shows off her acoustic side with showers of quiet chiming notes set off by White's slide guitar work.

The lyrics are the album's only weakness. Taylor's words are laden with clichés and awkward descriptions of dead-end relationships. Her powerful vocals and anguished pyrotechnics convey a world of pain and betrayal that her lyrics don't ever quite capture. /J. Poet, AllMusic

Detroit. Few words draw up such emotion and imagery as that one word sentence. It’s really a novel on its own, and it says more about music than most books ever could. One of the things most people forget in this modern era of music is the deep root of blues that comes from Detroit. One man who hasn’t is Paul Lamb and his band The Detroit Breakdown.

Paul grew up in Detroit, listening to a mix of great rock radio like Bob Seger, Stevie Wonder, George Clinton and drew from other outside influences like Hendrix and Stevie Ray as he began to play guitar. After travelling the country seeking out his musical soul and playing with the best of the best, Paul has finally found what he was looking for right here at home.

Listening to Paul Lamb and the Detroit Breakdown is a musical time capsule. It will take you through the drive and riffs of the 70’s, but also has the modern pulse that comes from recording at the legendary Rust Belt Studios(Kid Rock, Uncle Kracker) that keeps it all fresh. He’s not rehashing a memory, he’s brought this music to life.

After extensively touring Europe, highlighted by appearances at Glastonbury and touring with Walter Trout, Peter Green and many others, Paul and the Detroit Breakdown are bringing their music back home, similar to the path Hendrix followed. It all comes back around, much like it does with music and Detroit. Paul carries the torch as well as any native from this great city could ever do.

Joanne Shaw TaylorTaylor embodies all the elements of modern blues, even if she sings with a distinctively British accent. Given her extraordinary dexterity as a guitarist and well-developed vocal chops, Taylor was already a sensation on the blues festival circuit in both the U.S. and Great Britain when only in her mid-twenties. Taylor caught the blues bug as a young teenager growing up in the Birmingham area. She heard guitarists Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert Collins, and Jimi Hendrix and knew then that was the kind of music she wanted to pursue, eventually full-time. Producer Dave Stewart (of Eurythmics fame) said of Taylor, several years previously when he first heard her: "I have played with all sorts of blues musicians all over the world. I even made a film, Deep Blues, where I went to Mississippi and recorded with some legendary players such as R.L. Burnside and Jesse Mae Hemphill. Last year I heard something I thought I would never hear: a British white girl playing blues guitar so deep and passionately it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end!" (Taylor was just 16 years old at that time.) Stewart was so impressed with her playing and musicianship that he asked her to accompany his supergroup, D.U.P., in touring Europe in 2002. She was also offered a record deal but the company went bankrupt. Seven years later, in May 2009 and with Taylor 23 years old, she released her stunning debut album, White Sugar, for Ruf Records, a German label with U.S. offices and a strong U.S. presence. She followed it up with extended U.S. touring, including shows with pianist and singer/songwriter Candye Kane. For her debut, Taylor went to the producer she most admired, Jim Gaines, who also produced good albums by her favorite blues players, including Jonny Lang, Luther Allison, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Carlos Santana. Accompanying her on White Sugar were veteran Memphis recording session players Steve Potts on drums and Dave Smith on bass. Good things are in the offing for this up-and-coming blues and blues-rock talent, and a glance at her website reveals a frantic touring schedule. She's clearly willing to work at her craft and put in the kind of air and ground miles needed to build a grassroots following in today's music business. ~ Richard Skelly

One night. One shot. No safety net. If there was pressure afoot as Joanne Shaw Taylor walked onstage at The Borderline on May 12th, 2013, then the bandleader used it as rocket-fuel, channeling the vibe into the set of her life.

Now, six months later, that explosive performance is captured on Songs From The Road - a live album with the soul power to jostle the greats off the podium. “I’m really pleased with it,” says Joanne. “It’s everything I wanted it to be.”

“The timing is good,” agrees Joanne. “My fans, and especially the blues fans, have been asking me for a live album for a while now. I’m glad that we waited, and didn’t do it two years ago, because hopefully I’ve improved. We’ve done three studio albums now, so I think the live album ties all the albums together.”

British blues guitarist Joanne Shaw Taylor comes off as a talented, if unfinished, young blues artist on her second album, Diamonds in the Dirt. Leading a quartet also including Steve Potts (drums), Dave Smith (bass), and Rick Steff (keyboards), Taylor turns in a set of original songs that serve as platforms for her electric lead work. The CD booklet prints all her lyrics, which she sings in a smoky, throaty alto, and the words turn out to be a succession of clichés, with a heavy emphasis on fire imagery, as titles like "Let It Burn" and "World on Fire" suggest. Bad behavior, bad luck, and bad love are alluded to, all of which are more than enough to justify the emotion Taylor expresses in her singing and the fervor with which she plays the guitar. Still, those leads often seem to have little to do with the songs from which they spring, and they tend to be more displays of technical virtuosity than expressions of feeling. Producer Jim Gaines may realize that the playing is more flash than substance, since he often chooses to fade out songs on the lead playing, an otherwise odd decision. Taylor's limitations are really just those of youth, so maybe it is better to focus on her strengths as a player, which come across as soon as she puts her fingers on her instrument. (Her voice has real possibilities, too, once she really learns how to use it. ) ~ William Ruhlmann
