Few artists are as well-positioned for such a serious leap in mainstream attention as Southern Avenue in this post-pandemic world. Anchored in Ori Naftaly’s excellent guitar work and Tierinii Jackson’s commanding vocal, the Memphis-based collective has set the blues world abuzz with a pair of charismatic albums on the famed Stax label - a self-titled LP in 2017 and Keep On in 2019. The former was named Best Emerging Artist Album by the Blues Foundation, and the latter earned a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Blues Album.

Be the Love You Want, Southern Avenue’s third studio album, is a muscular musical treatise on empowerment from a band in full control themselves. The title track kicks in the doors as an important, exhilarating anthem that urges the listener to lean in and create the world in which they want to live. Jackson sings, “Every move that you make, make it count,” with the sort of full-throated charge that sends chills down the spine.

Jason Mraz co-wrote the band’s infectious, up-tempo single “Move Into the Light,” a song perfectly suited for the stage and infused with contemporary gospel power. The positive song furthers the album’s empowerment theme, as does “Push Now,” a slinky, sensational track about facing your fears on which Jackson sings, “You gotta push your limits to see the possibilities.”

The bluesy sway of “Fences” creates enough space for both Naftaly and Jackson to occupy center ring for a minute to showcase their considerable skills. The song serves as a notable high point near the album’s midsection amid several other impressive songs. The pocket crafted by bassist Evan Sarver and drummer Tikyra Jackson on “Let’s Get It Together” allows the groove to carry the listener along. Another highlight is “Heathen Hearts,” a sort of a cappella number co-written by Cody Dickinson of North Mississippi Allstars.

Southern Avenue’s first two albums put them squarely on the musical map. If the world at present allows the band to hit the road to promote their latest and greatest LP, Be the Love You Want is the sort of compelling work that could make them a household name. /Matt Conner, No Depression

On their self-titled 2017 debut album, the boundary-breaking Memphis combo Southern Avenue sparked a one-band musical revolution, embodying an effortlessly organic soul/blues/R&B fusion that reflects the band members’ diverse roots as well as their deep commitment to their chosen style. On their second album ‘Keep On’, the dynamic outfit expands its gritty musical vision to embrace new musical challenges and a more expansive creative vision.

Southern Avenue combines the talents of a prodigiously talented set of young musicians who bring their individual backgrounds to the table to create music that carries the Southern soul legacy into the 21st century, spanning the band members’ wide-ranging musical interests while showcasing the powerful chemistry and electrifying live show that they’ve honed through extensive stage and studio experience. Since the release of their debut, Southern Avenue has played in over a dozen countries and wowed audiences at such festivals as Bonnaroo, Firefly, Electric Forest and Lockn’.

Guitar phenom Ori Naftaly originally built his reputation in his native Israel before joining forces with deeply expressive Memphis-bred singer Tierinii Jackson and her subtly powerful drummer sister Tikyra Jackson. The band’s lineup is rounded out by versatile keyboardist Jeremy Powell, an early alumnus of Stax Records’ renowned music academy.

‘Keep On’ brilliantly captures Southern Avenue’s combustible chemistry, with the emotion-charged energy of such distinctive originals as Whiskey Love, Savior, Too Good for You and We Are Not So Different reflecting the players’ evolving talents as well as the influence of the extensive roadwork that they’ve invested in the band.
The musicians recorded the album with producer Johnny Black (Jessie J, Daughtry, Estelle) at Memphis’ legendary Sam Phillips Recording, with guest appearances by seminal Stax Records artist William Bell, noted Memphis musician Gage Markey (who serves as guest bassist on most of the album) and a horn section comprised of Art Edmaiston (JJ Grey & Mofro, Gregg Allman) and Marc Franklin (The Bo-Keys, Gregg Allman).

Memphis, Tennessee, is one of the outstanding music cities of America. Southern Avenue runs from East Memphis due west, where it turns into E. McClemore Avenue, home of Soulsville, better known as Stax Records. This young Memphis group named themselves and their self-titled debut release, Southern Avenue, in a deliberate undertaking to continue and expand upon the soul, blues, and gospel tradition associated with this fabled city.

Fronted by the vivacious and vigorous vocalist Tierinni Jackson, the band has the recognizable throwback sound of Stax, but also adds a distinctive contemporary essence, giving them a razor sharp modern identity. Originally started by guitarist Ori Naftaly as a blues band, they morphed into their current lineup with the addition of Tierinni’s sister Tikyra Jackson on drums, Daniel McKee on bass, and keyboardist Jeremy Powell. The Jackson sisters sang and played in the local churches, tuning them into the inherent qualities required to perform soul music in Memphis; the other members proving just as proficient in their capabilities.
