10. Drift Away (4:28)
11. Lord, I Wonder (3:54)

A piano-pounding institution on the Southern Louisiana swamp blues scene during the late '50s and early '60s, Katie Webster later grabbed a long-deserved share of national recognition with a series of well-received Alligator albums. Poor Kathryn Thorne had to deal with deeply religious parents who did everything in their power to stop their daughter from playing R&B. But the rocking sounds of Fats Domino and Little Richard were simply too persuasive. Local guitarist Ashton Savoy took her under his wing, sharing her 1958 debut 45 for the Kry logo ("Baby Baby"). Webster rapidly became an invaluable studio sessioneer for Louisiana producers J.D. Miller in Crowley and Eddie Shuler in Lake Charles. She played on sides by Guitar Junior (Lonnie Brooks), Clarence Garlow, Jimmy Wilson, Lazy Lester, and Phil Phillips (her gently rolling 88s powered his hit "Sea of Love"). The young pianist also waxed some terrific sides of her own for Miller from 1959 to 1961 for his Rocko, Action, and Spot labels (where she introduced a dance called "The Katie Lee"). Webster led her own band, the Uptighters, at the same time she was spending her days in the studio. In 1964, she guested with Otis Redding's band at the Bamboo Club in Lake Charles and so impressed the charismatic Redding that he absconded with her. For the next three years, Webster served as his opening act. The 1970s were pretty much a lost decade for Katie Webster as she took care of her ailing parents in Oakland, California. But in 1982 a European tour beckoned, and she journeyed overseas for the first of many such jaunts. The Alligator connection commenced in 1988 with some high-profile help: Bonnie Raitt, Robert Cray, and Kim Wilson all made guest appearances on The Swamp Boogie Queen. The lovably extroverted boogie pianist encored with Two-Fisted Mama! and No Foolin' before suffering a stroke. She died on September 5, 1999 at the age of 63. ~Bill Dahl

The Goldband label is most known for the Cajun artists it recorded, such as Iry LeJeune and Cleveland Crochet, but it also put out releases by numerous blues musicians. These included some pretty respected, if secondary, blues notables like Lazy Lester, Lonesome Sundown, Juke Boy Bonner, Hop Wilson, and Katie Webster. They, and several much less familiar names, can be heard on this 26-song compilation of Goldband blues sides, mostly done in the 1950s and 1960s. The blues records done during this era at Jay Miller's studio in Crowley, LA. (by Slim Harpo especially) are justly more famous than the Goldband blues sides as far as Louisiana blues goes. But there was a different sound to the Goldband blues stable, although its studios were located just 50 miles to the west, particularly in the overlap with Texas blues, as Goldband's Lake Charles headquarters were close to the Texas border. There was also some spillover from zydeco and Cajun music, as Clarence Garlow, Thaddus Declouet, and Rockin' Sidney -- all represented on this anthology -- did some R&B and blues sides for Goldband, although they are principally zydeco artists. Cookie & the Cupcakes, who also have a track, are thought of more as a swamp-pop group than as a blues one. Most of this, however, is neither swamp pop nor zydeco-influenced, but fair though not wondrous electric blues/R&B of various shades, not too refined but not always that swampy either. Jimmy Wilson's "Trouble in My Home," for instance, sounds a little like the minor-keyed anguished blues of early Otis Rush, though he lacks Rush's superb guitar and vocal skills. The CD is worth investigating for those who are heavily into Louisiana R&B of the 1950s and 1960s, and on the lookout for some variations from the usual regional stew that aren't so well known. ~Richie Unterberger

Most of you know Katie Webster the two fisted piano pounding soul singing Swamp Boogie Queen. She was all that, and much much more. She was my musical mother on stage, and in the studio. She was a loving family member who would come stay with my family in Mississippi frequently when were not touring. I meet Katie through the recommendation of Tony Coleman, and Russell Jackson. I flew to San Francisco and Katie her sister Myrtle had cooked a down home Louisiana fest, and make me feel right at home. After dinner we went to piano, and Katie started putting me through the paces with swamp pop, boogie woogie, juke joint blues, Memphis soul, jazz standards, and gospel jems. She would smile, and go from song to song. Then, she gave me a list of two hundred songs, and said she would choose from the list to play at Bumpbershoot Festival that weekend in Seattle, Washington. That was my introduction Momma Kat. When we arrive in Seattle she reduced the list to thirty songs that she selects from for the concert. We performed twelve. Katie liked my voice, and insisted that I sing with on “Love Deluxe” on her Two Fisted Mama CD. She became God Mother to my youngest son (Keisean Jackson) and loved teaching him to play her style of piano. We had great times touring the world, and recording great music. But, my fondest memories is seeing Katie in the kitchen cooking her famous gumbo, telling jokes, singing, and just being Mama Kat. Thank you, Katie. You remain in our hearts, and your music is in our soul. ~Vasti Jackson

Katie Webster first came to prominence in the 1950s, when both her over-the-top persona and ham-fisted blues piano style were regarded as Louisiana state treasures. A period of semi-obscurity was broken in the mid-1980s when she recorded a whopper of a comeback album supported by such big names as Robert Cray and Bonnie Raitt. While Webster is best known for her lethal left hand and ebullient Swamp Blues flourishes, she is also an accomplished singer, performing standards and originals with her trademark delivery.

Black Cat Bone (BCB) is a blues-rock band from Tübingen, Germany. The original line-up with the brothers Hans Jörg (guitar, vocals) and Robert Müller (drums), Stephan Wegner (bass) and Albrecht Schäfer (keyboards), was formed in 1979 and they made their first appearance under the name Black Cat Bone at the Rock Against The Right-festival in Tübingen. Since then they have given concerts and performed at festivals all over Europe.

B.B. King - Blues Summit

Year: 1993
Bitrate: MP3@320K/s
Time: 62:42
Size: 146,3 MB
Styles: Blues
Scans: Full

1. Playin' With My Friends (w. Robert Cray) (5:18)

3. I Pity The Fool (w. Buddy Guy) (4:36)
4. You Shook Me (w. John Lee Hooker) (4:59)
5. Something You Got (w. Koko Taylor) (4:02)
6. There's Something On Your Mind (w. Etta James) (6:02)

9. You're The Boss (w. Ruth Brown) (4:07)
10. We're Gonna Make It (w. Irma Thomas) (3:51)
11. I Gotta Move Out Of This Neighborhood/Nobody Loves Me But My Mother (B.B. King Orchestra) (8:57)
12. Everybody's Had The Blues (w. Joe Louis Walker) (4:35)

On this release, King comes close to equaling his past triumphs on small independent labels in the '50s and '60s. He's ditched the psuedo-hip production fodder and cut a 12-song set matching him with blues peers. His duets with Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, and Albert Collins are especially worthy, while the songs with Koko Taylor, Ruth Brown, and Irma Thomas have some good-natured banter and exchanges, as well as tasty vocals.

The master gives willing pupils Joe Louis Walker and Robert Cray valuable lessons on their collaborations. There's also a medley in which King invokes the spirit of his chitlin circuit days, taking the vocal spotlight while his Orchestra roars along underneath. /Ron Wynn, AllMusic

She was real blues history! In her youth Katie was a member of the Otis Redding Band; then she started her own career. As a child she listened to the boogie woogie stars Pete Johnson, Albert Ammons and Meade Lux Lewis. She learned also a lot from the musicians who lived in her neighbourhood, Lightnin’ Slim and Slim Harpo, who created the Swamp Blues. On this CD – a live-recording from Greece – you can hear what great artist Katie was! She was known by her fans as Two fisted mama, Piano pounding, soul-singin’ swamp boogie queen!

Various Artists - Ain't Gonna Hush: The Queens Of Rhythm & Blues (3 CD)

From the mid-50s to the early 60s, R&B belonged not just to men with guitars, but to women who sang with hungry voices on stages and in studios across the US. Their roots were planted in the blues of Ma Rainey, Mamie Smith, Ida Fox and Bessie Smith, the gospel of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the jazz of Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington. Their legacy lies in the recordings collected on "Ain’t Gonna Hush" by journalist (Mojo, Record Collector) and R&B authority Lois Wilson.

Selected because of their collectability and popularity on the club scene, the 76 tracks on the 3 CD set "Ain’t Gonna Hush" include contributions by crowned queens of soul Etta James and Aretha Franklin, and other luminaries like Big Maybelle, Ruth Brown, Little Esther, LaVern Baker and Betty Everett. But lesser-known names are also well represented, whose recordings, like most of the songs collected here, sold poorly, but fetch huge prices today. Their lack of success was not due to ability, performance or quality of songwriting; every artist here (including Kentucky-born rockabilly musician Joyce Harris) shouts, screams and hollers as if their lives depend on it, every song is perfectly crafted. But due to bad luck, lack of promotion or simply the fact that with a market flooded with choice, the competition was tough and these 45s fell through the cracks. Here those unfortunate turns of fate are redressed with a collection that compiles the forgotten alongside the famed. Ain’t Gonna Hush reasserts the eminence of revered voices and proposes the coronation of a larger cast of R&B Queens.

Katie Webster, the queen of swamp blues piano, one of America's great rhythm and blues vocal and piano stylists, along with Hot Links. Most of the selections are Webster originals and based on real-life experiences.
"I Know That's Right" blends Katie Webster's Louisiana style with straight blues and boogie-woogie. Katie Webster is a master pianist. She intersperses powerhouse runs, nimble phrasing and gospel riffs, and keeps everything moving in a casual, yet hypnotic fashion. Webster's vocal style has elements of down-home acerbity, fervent pleas and plaintive questioning, as well as comedic and intense aspects. She never sings a chorus or melody the same on any number, and it's extremely interesting to hear her changing direction or varying the way she sings from stanza to stanza. Katie Webster is the kind of singer who never gets boring or tiring...the album sizzles and shimmers.”

If American music is unique, it is largely due to its bedrock foundation of blues and gospel music, two forms of music that emerged in the late 19th and early 20th century. Anchoring the sounds of African America, these styles underlay the musical innovations of the century: jazz, rhythm and blues, rock, soul and hip hop. They are known and cherished around the world and in every corner of the U.S. It would be impossible to imagine American music without them. ~Charles McGovern

Katie Webster is a powerful singer who can really belt out the blues, but perhaps her greatest skill is her two-handed piano solos. On this CD she is featured on a fairly wide range of material within the idiom including a zydeco-flavored blues, a sincere blues ballad ("It's Mighty Hard"), a couple of Motownish soul numbers, a rock and rollish "Those Lonely Lonely Nights" (on which she shares vocals with Lonnie Brooks) and, best of all, a variety of basic blues. Although she also contributes some atmospheric chordal organ, it is Katie Webster's piano playing that gives her music its most distinctive personality. A fun set. ~Scott Yanow

Katie Webster plays barrelhouse boogie-woogie, New Orleans R&B, Gulf Coast swamp pop, deep bayou blues and Southern gospel-flavored soul like nobody's business; her 35 years of professional piano work has appeared on at least 500 singles, including the original version of "Sea of Love," and countless albums. Music critics and fans around the world acknowledge her as the premier female blues piano player anywhere. Alligator Records' Deluxe Edition collects 15 of her very best tracks from her three albums since 1988, and there isn't a filler track to be found. Webster never once failed to deliver on her sassy and sensuous blend of barrelhouse boogie-woogie. Some of the high points of Deluxe Edition include several duets -- "Love Deluxe" with Vasti Jackson and the classic "Who's Making Love," which finds Kim Wilson (the Fabulous Thunderbirds) and bluesman Robert Cray jamming with the Boogie Queen. Wilson also accompanies Bonnie Raitt and Webster to wail "On the Run." Other standout tracks include her remake of "Sea of Love" and the non-vegetarian "A Little Meat on the Side." "The Love You Save" and "Two Fisted Mama" are sure to go down in the music history books as prime examples of Webster's swamp boogie styles. But perhaps the best cuts of the 15 are the blues-rich vocals and sax of "Try a Little Tenderness," a sure winner, and "Never Let Me Go," a torch-bearing ballad. Alligator's Deluxe Editions are just that -- the best songs by the best artists in their catalog. And Katie Webster ranks right there at the top of that rich list. ~Michael B. Smith

Swamp Blues, the looser, more rhythmic variation of the standard Louisiana sound, also brings more contemporary elements of New Orleans, zydeco, soul music, and Cajun to bear on its style. The guitar work is simple but effective, and is heavily influenced by the boogie patterns used on Jimmy Reed records, with liberal doses of Lightnin' Hopkins and Muddy Waters. Unlike the heavy backbeat of the more popular urban styles, its rhythm can be best described as laid-back, making even its most uptempo offerings share the same mood and ambience of the most desultory of slow blues.

J.D. 'Jay' Miller, is the Crowley, Louisiana record man who single-handedly put swamp-blues music on the map. Thanks to his vision and expertise, we continue to enjoy his productions such as I'm A King Bee by Slim Harpo, I Hear You Knockin' by Lazy Lester, Hoo Doo Blues by Lightnin' Slim and numerous more classics. These recordings have all been documented in our compre-hensive Excello reissue series. Now, we take a look at Jay Miller's R&B recordings. The roots of Louisiana R&B can be traced to a mix of the hit sounds of Texas and New Orleans, with distinct Creole and Cajun undertones. Specifically, the main influences are Clarence 'Gatemouth' Brown, Guitar Slim and Fats Domino. Jay Miller scored first time out with R&B on Excello with Guitar Gable's infectious instrumental Congo Mombo in 1956, followed closely by the swamp-pop standard Irene, sung by Gable's vocalist King Karl. For the next three years Guitar Gable and King Karl had regular singles on the Excello label, culminating in This Should Go On Forever which provided a US Top 20 hit for swamp-popper Rod Bernard. Not only this but Gable's band was used as Miller's session group, recording everything from swamp-blues to rock'n'roll. Much of the early R&B material here is much sought-after on the original Excello singles, that is the sides by Vince Monroe, Joe Hudson & His Rocking Dukes (with stand-out vocalist Lester Robertson), Eddie Hudson (with superb vocal group accompaniment from the Gaynotes), Carol Fran, and Jay Nelson & the Jumpers. There are also two rare sides from Excello's sister label, Nasco, by Classie Ballou and Chuck Martin. By 1961, Jay Miller had formed a new studio group, whose principal members were ex-Clifton Chenier saxophonist Lionel Prevost (who has his own record here as Lionel Torrence), pianist Katie Webster, guitarist Al Foreman, and drummer Warren Storm. This combo generated a joyful, enthusiastic New Orleans R&B-type sound behind artists such as Charles Sheffield, Sonny Martin, Bobby Jay and Tabby Thomas. Special mention must be made of four previously unreleased sides: King Karl's storming rocker Baby Baby Come To Papa, Charles Sheffield's shouter You're Gonna Need Somebody, Marva Allen's charming Here Comes The Night Owl and Katie Webster's Never Let Me Go - with overdubbed full symphonic orchestral accompaniment, which works! My notes to this CD are based on an unpublished interview with Jay Miller in 1995, shortly before he died. Miller gives a fascinating insight into his business operations, recording techniques and his relationship with Ernie Young of Excello Records. Of his unique sound, he said: "It wasn't technical as far as audio but I had a sense of something. Maybe that was the best thing that could have happened. I didn't know too much about it, I didn't go by the book, because I went by these two things - my ears!!! I've had so many compliments about the sound I got." The exemplary productions from Jay Miller's tiny country studios in Crowley extend to his R&B recordings. Louisiana Roots is the Jay Miller R&B Legacy.
