9. Aha (4:40)

Soul-blues singer Sugaray Rayford released 2019's Grammy-nominated Somebody Save Me as his debut for Eric Corne's Forty Below Records. His fifth album, it provided an international breakthrough for the singer with its excellent balance of soul, modern blues, and contemporary R&B. The edges got a bit harder on 2022's In Too Deep, saturated in gritty, funky R&B. Human Decency ties the disparate ends together, melding all styles inside Rayford's commanding, resonant instrument. Corne plays various instruments, produces, and wrote the music and all but two lyrics, while the singer co-wrote the other two and also plays various instruments.

Furthermore, the pair employ most of the same musicians, including guitarists Rick Holmstrom and Eamon Ryland, drummer Matt Tecu, keyboardists Drake "Munkihaid" Shining and Sasha Smith; newcomer Saundra Williams appears on backing vocals and there's also a horn section. Opener "Failing Upwards" is a roiling, funky soul-blues, based on the core riff from 10cc's "Wall Street Shuffle." Led by guitar, thudding kick drum, and a growling B-3, Rayford reveals the lyric's intent from the jump. His blues shout indicts the subject for having all the clothes, cash, looks, and connections, but lacking an inner life. Williams' backing vocals underscore the tune with heady gospel overtones.

The title track single is a cut-time, deep soul groover, pushed by blaring horns, swirling B-3, and shuffling drums, while guitars and bass bring up the rear with a swirling flute adding a vintage pop touch. Rayford croons and then exhorts listeners to see the true extent of our commonalities as human beings, no matter which side of belief and principle we are on. The song is an inspiring finger-popper, perfect for the club floor. It's answered by the gritty, clavinet-drenched Southern funk of "Stuck Between." As Rayford and guest Sam Morrow trade verses with passion, the horns skitter, bump, and strut atop breakbeat snares and snarling keyboards. "Strawberry Hill," another horn-driven beauty, recalls the swing in Stax/Volt. Rayford's crystalline baritone is uniquely expressive in phrasing, sure, but also in how he reaches all the way inside a note to excavate hidden nuances from its marrow.

Check for it on the cut-time soul-gospel sizzler "Run for Cover," with smoking horns and soaring support from Williams. "Dirty Rat" slithers in all steamy; it's a nighttime R&B club jam before changing shape and transforming into a socially conscious mid-tempo soul ballad. "Ain't That a Man" melds the horn-blasted pulse of Sam & Dave with Williams' testifying gospel-response vocal, over Holmstrom's ringing dirty electric slide guitar. Human Decency is Rayford's most consistent outing. His discipline as a singer is unimpeachable, and his willingness to take chances with phrasing and range are exhilarating. These songs, arrangements, and performances are excellent for him. The growth revealed here in Rayford's abilities elevates him from a very fine singer to perhaps becoming a great one. /Thom Jurek, AllMusic

Sugaray Rayford - Somebody Save Me

Size: 94,7 MB
Time: 40:59
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2019
Styles: Blues Rock, Blues Soul
Art: Front

01. The Revelator (3:04)
02. Time To Get Movin' (3:37)
03. You And I (4:53)
04. My Cards Are On The Table (4:22)

06. Angels And Devils (3:21)
07. Sometimes You Get The Bear (And Sometimes The Bear Gets You) (4:35)
08. Somebody Save Me (4:34)
09. Is It Just Me (3:28)
10. Dark Night Of The Soul (5:10)

Somebody Save Me is an ambitious album that slides gracefully between the new blues of Gary Clarke Jr. and Fantastic Negrito, the rock & soul stylings of The War & Treaty, and the vintage Daptone vibe of the late Charles Bradley and Sharon Jones, bringing a fresh take to classic sounds.

The album was written and produced by Forty Below Records founder, Eric Corne. Best known for his work with blues legends John Mayall and Walter Trout, Corne and Forty Below have also launched the careers of several talented new artists, such as Sam Morrow, Jaime Wyatt and Kail Baxley. A number of mainstays from Corne productions feature strongly here including guitarist Rick Holmstrom (Mavis Staples), bassist Taras Prodaniuk (Dwight Yoakam), drummer Matt Tecu (Jakob Dylan), keyboardist Sasha Smith (Sam Beam), guitarist Eamon Ryland (The Happy Mondays) and the horn section from Late Night with Conan O’Brien. Corne recorded the bulk of the record live and the chemistry of the performances infuses the songs with a spontaneity and raw emotion.

The ten songs on the album explore contrasting themes of darkness and light. There is social commentary, several love songs, including two gorgeous soul ballads, “My Cards are on the Table” and “Somebody Save Me”, the Stax inspired “You and I” and the more Motown leaning “Is it Just Me.”

The album is full of inspired arrangements with several unexpected twists and turns; like the John Barry (James Bond) inspired bridge of “Angels and Devils”; the wobbly 1950’s inspired keyboard solo and lush strings of the title tracks, recorded with The Section Quartet (Ryan Adams, Father John Misty); and the gospel choir, shape-shifting keyboards and dramatic horns of “The Revelator” which seamlessly blends blues, soul and jazz with a hint of reggae. But at the center of it all is Sugaray Rayford’s commanding voice, tying it all together.

With his 8-piece band and personal charm, Rayford’s live shows are quickly becoming known for their high-energy and celebratory nature, with Rayford whipping the crowds into a frenzy, like a Gospel Preacher. In the studio and in person, Sugaray Rayford is developing a reputation as a force to be reckoned with and an artist to watch in the coming years. ~Martine Ehrenclou

12. God's Word (6:17)

Walter Trout is no ordinary artist. Survivor Blues is no ordinary covers album. From the day he conceived the project to the moment he counted off the first song in the studio, Walter Trout had a bolder plan for Survivor Blues. "I'm riding in my car sometimes," says the US blues titan. "I've got a blues station on – and here's another band doing Got My Mojo Workin'. And there's a little voice in me that says, 'Does the world need another version of that song?' So I came up with an idea. I didn't want to do Stormy Monday or Messin' With The Kid. I didn't want to do the blues greatest hits. I wanted to do old, obscure songs that have hardly been covered. And that's how Survivor Blues started...".

"Life ain’t got no shortcuts“ by Jay-Bee & the Ultratone All Stars takes you on a musical journey through the black South of the USA. The 11 songs written by Jens Bohlen (aka Jay-Bee) demonstrate Blues with a lot of Soul, a splash of Gospel, Swing, Funk and New Orleans elements. The album has been produced and recorded by Tony Braunagel (Grammy Award Winner, Blues Award “Blues Drummer 2018” Winner) in Johnny Lee Schell’s (Grammy Award Winner) Ultratone Studio in Los Angeles. Besides Jens Bohlen on guitars you can hear members of the Phantom Blues Band (Mike Finnigan, Larry Fulcher, Johnny Lee, Tony) and many other excellent studio musicians from L.A. on this CD. E.g. Josh Sklair (Grammy Award Winner and former bandleader of Etta James) and Lenny Castro on percussions add their unique sounds, just to mention a few. In total, 18 musicians participated in the recording sessions. Outstanding is the unparalleled soul-blues voice of Sugaray Rayford (Blues Awards 2018 nominee). He brings the songs to life and his passion and energy speak straight to you heart.
Exciting harmonies, soulful melody lines and sophisticated arrangements with horns (arranged by Thomas Kässens ) and choir are typical for Jens Bohlen’s blues. The lyrics of his songs cover the important aspects of life: joy and sorrow, love and pain, life and death.

13. Ain't Nobody's Business (Feat. Annika Chambers, Victor Wainwright, Gracie Curran, Sugaray Rayford, Erica Brown & Jeff Jensen) (7:29)

I’ve always enjoyed albums in which one artist explores music with several other artists in order to see what direction that collaboration takes. In my collection are albums of duets featuring Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennet, among others, and now I’m delighted to add the latest from Mick Kolassa who has teamed up with different friends on a new album of duets, Double Standards.

You might remember that on Kolassa’s previous album, You Can’t Do That, featured a team up with Mark Telesca, turning Beatles classics into acoustic blues numbers. He’s shown that he has no problem taking chances with his music and he’s gathered some very talented musicians and singers to make this a very enjoyable album.

Double Standards is produced by longtime collaborator and all-around guitar wizard Jeff Jensen, who also plays guitar and even adds vocals to one song. Vocalists include Sugaray Rayford, Heather Crosse, Victor Wainwright, Annika Chambers, Tas Cru, Tullie Brae, Eric Hughes, Erica Brown, Patti Parks, David Dunavent, and Gracie Curran.

Aside from Kolassa and Jensen on guitar, musicians include Bill Ruffino on bass; James Cunningham on drums; Chris Stephenson on organ; Eric Hughes adds his harmonica to three songs; Jeremy Powell plays piano on two tracks, Alice Hasan on violin; and Colin John and David Dunavent play guitar on one track each.

The album starts off with a fun Willie Dixon number, 600 Pounds Of Heavenly Joy, which features Sugaray Rayford with Kolassa. The two have great gruff voices and this is a lot of fun to listen to and a great invitation to what must surely be an interesting journey. Jensen’s guitar adds a sweet element to the song.

A second Willie Dixon classic, I Just Want To Make Love To You gives Kolassa a chance to team up with Heather Crosse. Crosse is a strong vocalist, and the way her voice has an edgy low growl makes this song one that catches you right away and won’t let go. Definitely going to be receiving airplay on Time For The Blues, and I suspect many other shows! I don’t have any of Crosse’s other recordings, but you better believe I’m ordering the others right now. Meow…

Victor Wainwright joins Kolassa for a great version of It’s Tight Like That. Originally written and performed by Hudson Whittaker, better known as Tampa Red, this is one of those great songs that features Red’s fun wordplay. This is a great example of Hokum Blues, and I, for one, hope that we will hear more of this style. Wainwright, who has just announced he’s joining the Ruf Records family, is one of the best keyboardists alive, and his vocals rock. Eric Hughes blows a great harp on the number.

One of the most alluring and sensual songs ever recorded, Fever, showcases Annika Chambers’ great voice. This jazzy number is deeply rooted in the blues, and Stephenson’s organ adds a deeper dimension to the song. This is a great late night song to unwind to after a long day, or to hold that certain someone a little closer for an even longer night…

Tas Cru steps up to the microphone for the next song, the powerful Nobody Knows You When You’re Down And Out. Hasan’s violin gives the song a sweet melancholy introduction before Kolassa’s vocals come in. This version of the song pulls out all the stops and Kolassa and Cru wring every drop of emotion out of the lyrics.

BB King’s Rock Me Baby features a great collaboration between Kolassa and Tullie Brae. Stephenson’s keyboards set up the song and while Kolassa’s vocals are good, Brae takes things higher. This is another song that will be appearing on a number of shows. It’s just plain fun and while it doesn’t try to capture King’s signature guitar sound, it takes on its own soul and remains very true to the spirit of the original.

The iconic Key To The Highway has been covered by just about every blues artist over the years. Now we can add Kolassa and Eric Hughes to that list. Hughes has already added his sweet harp to a couple of previous numbers, and here he brings both his harp and vocals to the song. It’s a good interpretation of a classic tune.

One more Willie Dixon number, Spoonful, features Kolassa and Erica Brown. They turn the song jazzy with Stephenson’s keys taking the lead. Kolassa has chosen his songs wisely, mixing some of the better known works by Dixon and Tampa Red with others that are great, but perhaps not as well known. Listen for Jensen’s guitar break and they way he trades off with Stephenson. Very nice interpretation.

Patti Parks joins Kolassa on a great cover of Hudson Whittaker’s It Hurts Me Too. This is one of Tampa Red’s most covered songs and one that resonates deeply with most audiences. It’s one of those songs where the singer just bares his or her heart and pours out the emotion. A truly wonderful gem of a song, and a great interpretation.

Early In The Morning features David Dunavent on guitar and vocals. This is a rocking blues number that will be showing up on my show, and I suspect many others as well. For those who like their blues with a bit of an edge, this is the one for you!

Another number from Hudson Whittaker, aka Tampa Red, Don’t You Lie To Me (Evil), brings Gracie Curran and Kolassa together. More great keys work from Stephenson overlaid with some funky guitar and Curran’s vocals are sweet and soulful at the same time.

Jensen teams up with his old friend on their version of Outside Woman Blues. Whenever they team up there are bound to be a few surprises, in this case a more rocking number than most of the previous tracks. Jensen is one of those guitar slingers who always turns in a great performance, and once you hear him, you’re always looking for his next release.

All of the previous vocalists join Kolassa on a fun, seven-minute version of Ain’t Nobody’s Business to close out the album. Everyone seems to be having a great time and it sounds like the recording of the album was a great party and a wonderful excuse for friends to get together. Wish I could have been a fly on the wall for this one!

Mick Kolassa may not be a household name, but within the blues world he is a well respected musician. He keeps that old school sound alive and isn’t shy about sharing the spotlight with his friends and colleagues. Since discovering his talents a few albums back, I have become a big fan of his work, and Double Standards will have a welcome place in my collection. ~Professor John

His music has even been endorsed by the legendary Brian Wilson, who could hear the star quality in this undiscovered jewel. Somehow, to most people, he has managed to slip through the net, but not any more. Italian soul ambassador Luca Sapio made it his mission to bring Sugaray's music to the forefront and tracked him down to record his latest album, 'The World That We Live In.' It was recorded in Luca's analogue studio in Italy, with racks of vintage gear and a killer house band. What they have so magically created is an album which sounds like an instant classic.

Caron Sugaray Rayford grew up in Texas, his childhood marked by poverty and loss. His mother struggled to raise three boys alone while battling cancer. He was at church everyday and played and sang for the lord when his musical career began at the age of seven. Running on the gospel highway was not exciting like singing devilish blues records in the field of Son House, Howling Wolf and Muddy Waters.

"Whether it be Soul, Blues, Gospel, or all points in between, the fact still remains that you are not going to find much of a better artist to sing them than Sugaray". At 6'5", Sugaray, born Caron "Sugaray" Rayford, is a big man, which is one of the reasons he is really able to belt out a song, but his ability to get even deeper into the music comes from his rich musical past. "His love for music began as many great singers had, in Church, at a young age, singing and playing the drums. It is from those roots that he found his love for Gospel and Soul".

About 14 years ago he got into music a bit deeper with being the lead singer for a R&B/Funk band called Urban Gypsys. It is with that band, that his career started to become finely honed as he had the opportunity to share the stage with many greats, which included, "The Average White Band, Dennis Quaid, Joe Louis Walker, Kal David, Super Diamond & Venice, to name a few". Later on he joined a more bluesier band called, Aunt Kizzy’z Boyz, where his popularity as a mighty fine blues singer continued to grow. In 2006, the band placed second at that years International Blues Challenge (IBC). It was via that years IBC that Sugaray Rayford caught the attention of Randy Chortkoff, the head of Delta Groove Productions, which led to Sugaray being chosen as lead frontman for a few Mannish Boys shows, which also lead to him being the lead frontman for their critically acclaimed release, "Double Dynamite". In 2010, Sugaray released his Solo Debut "Blind Alley".

5. Take It To The Bank (4:23)

Here’s a great album from the big man with an even bigger voice – the Texas-born, California-based Sugaray Rayford, who has put out a winner in his latest release, “Southside”, which comprises of all original songs written by him and writing partner Ralph Carter. All bases are covered from funk to soul and blues, with a great grooving band. “Southside” is a follow up to his Delta Groove Records release, “Dangerous” in 2013, and he also featured on The Mannish Boys recordings for the same label – here he is firmly out front and sounds to be having a complete ball! A prominent feature on all tracks is the absolutely terrific guitar work of Gino Matteo – a true master of all blues styles.

The album kicks off in a laid back jazzy groove with “Southside Of Town”, with the big man’s voice imposing itself straight away, and with superb contributions from the band, including Leo Dombecki’s keyboards and the saxophone and trumpet of Allan Walker and Gary Bivona. The following “Miss Thang” rides on a tough guitar motif from Matteo as the band get funky. More guitar fireworks start “Texas Bluesman” which rolls along in fine style on this ode to all things from the Lone Star State, and of course, another heartfelt vocal from Rayford.

The soulful “Call Off The Mission” is horn-fuelled and the rhythm section of Ralph Carter (bass) and Lavell Jones (drums) push things along nicely; “All I Think About” is firmly again in funk territory and again all about the groove! It has, like a few tunes on the album, a very Memphis feel to it. The lengthy “Slow Motion” ends this fine album – a soulful, dreamy (and saucy!) ballad, perfect for Sugaray Rayford’s voice. Highly recommended for all lovers of blues and soul – a classy offering from a great singer! /Grahame Rhodes
