America-born blues artists Dov Hammer and Sagi "CG" Shorer first met in Tel Aviv in 1999. By then each had paid plenty of "blues dues", leading their own bands, grinding through the bar circuit, and backing visiting blues artists such as Billy Branch, Zora Young, Deitra Farr, Paul deLay, Lucky Peterson and King Earnest Baker. Since then, collaborating as "CG & The Hammer", they have played hundreds of shows in clubs, concert halls and international festivals. They have toured the USA three times, including representing Israel twice at the International Blues challenge in Memphis, TN.

"Something Good" is the band's fourth album. After more then a decade of playing blues in Israel, the band decided to return to the source, and made the pilgrimage to Memphis TN, where they recorded 12 new songs at the historic "Sun" studio. In this special atmosphere, recording where B.B. King, Howlin' Wolf, Ike Turner, Elvis, Johnny Cash and others had made their great hits, the band tapped into the magical source of the music which has inspired them. The result is CG & The Hammer's best album to date, a unique melding of blues, rock 'n' roll and country, with the band's own original songwriting, passionate vocals, wailing harmonica and fiery guitar.

Louisiana Red (born Iverson Minter) was a flamboyant guitarist, harmonica player, and vocalist. He lost his parents early in life through multiple tragedies; his mother died of pneumonia a week after his birth, and his father was lynched by the Klu Klux Klan when he was five. Red began recording for Chess in 1949, then joined the Army. After his discharge, he played with John Lee Hooker in Detroit for almost two years in the late '50s, and continued through the '60s and '70s with recording sessions for Chess, Checker, Atlas, Glover, Roulette, L&R, and Tomato, among others.

Louisiana Red moved to Hanover, Germany in 1981, and maintained a busy recording and performing schedule through the subsequent decades into the new millennium, his 21st century releases including 2001's Driftin' on Earwig, 2002's A Different Shade of Red on Severn, 2004's Bad Case of the Blues on Mojo Tone, 2005's No Turn on Red on Hightone and Hot Sauce on Red Lightnin', and 2008's Back to the Black Bayou (recorded in Norway with producer/guitarist Little Victor) on Ruf. John F. Klaver is a Dutch guitarist, singer, composer and music teacher. He began playing the guitar at the age of eleven, inspired by Gary Moore, Robben Ford and Jimi Hendrix. After graduating, he took private guitar lessons as well as music theory classes at the University of the Pacific in the USA. Back in the Netherlands, he was admitted to the conservatory of Amsterdam and received lessons from Jesse van Ruller, Martijn van Iterson and Eef Albers.

In 2007 he started his own formation, the John F. Klaver Trio, that would later become the John F. Klaver Band. The first accomplishment was the CD “Jetpepper”, that was released in 2008. The second album, “Coming Back For More”, followed in April 2011. The album was a major success, being voted Best Dutch Blues CD 2011. Well-known music magazines also noticed John and devoted several articles not only to the band, but also to the amplifiers and effect pedals that John builds himself under the name of ‘Klaver’.

Also in 2011, John and his band won the Dutch Blues Challenge and thereby were voted Best Blues Band of The Netherlands. The same award was presented to John in 2013 after winning the Dutch Blues Challenge for the second time. In 2024 John won the DBC for the third time, but now as a soloist. The third album “Wheels in Motion” (November 2012), featuring guest musicians Big Pete (Best Dutch Blues harpist 2011) and Evan Jenkins (Matt Schofield Band), also won Best Dutch Blues Album of the year and showed that John F. Klaver and his band should be reckoned among the leading Dutch blues acts.

Guitarist Gary Hutchison received the OMA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004. Oreo Blue has been invited to participate in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN, twice by both the Ozark Blues Society in 2009 and by the Fort Smith Riverfront Blues Society in 2013, respectively. The “newest” member of Oreo Blue is John Seaberg on bass who is renown for his time as bassist and songwriter in The Steve Gaines (Crawdad, Lynyrd Skynyrd) Band. Nik Clovsky is a regular guy. The Marysville resident coaches kids at Everett High School and works at Washington state’s juvenile justice office. He’s well-known in his community and not so much elsewhere.

But as a young bass player during Seattle’s grunge scene in the ‘90s, Clovsky had no idea he wasn’t famous.

For a while, Clovsky played for the creative release it gave him, then transitioned to writing original music. He still loves rock, but blues giants are what inspired him to continue his journey of producing authentic, stripped-down music. Early influences like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath gave way to Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker.

He wrote five songs and recorded them with what he had: nothing expensive or technical. He played the blues with an acoustic guitar and sang raw vocals. Clovsky had no intention of recording an album.

Then he attended a jam session under a gazebo at his aunt Nancy Miller’s house in Marysville, where he met Tony N, a local producer who owns a recording studio in Arlington. The pair bonded over songwriting instantly.

“It happened so fast,” Clovsky recalled. “Next thing I knew we jumped into the studio.”

He worked at night and on weekends to create a full-length album. Produced by Tony N, Clovsky’s 11-song record, Wooden Music, was released online in January. The acoustic album has its roots in the blues, with elements of rock and Americana. A variety of upbeat and slower, more reflective songs help ground the album.

When Dov Hammer and Sagi "CG" Shorer, two America-born bluesmen first met in Tel Aviv, Israel, in 1999, both had already paid plenty of dues, both as sidemen (sharing stages with such blues greats as Willie Kent, Paul deLay, Zora Young, Billy Branch and the late King Earnest Baker among others) and leading their own bands. The two soon joined forces to create the group now known as "CG & The Hammer".

While deeply rooted in the blues styles of Chicago and Texas, the band has never tried to copy a "classic" sound, instead updating and continuing the evolution of the blues and giving it their own unique flavor. They have toured the USA three times, visiting Ohio and Chicago in 2004 and touring Florida, Mississippi and Tennessee in 2005, including festival performances at the River City Blues Festival in Ohio and the International Blues Challenge in Memphis TN. In 2009 they returned to the south, playing in Alabama, Florida and making an unforgettable appearance at the International Blues Challenge, as well as being chosen for the "Kings of Beale Street" show in Memphis.

Their first album "Feels Like Home" was released in 2002 to great critical acclaim, featuring 12 new original blues songs. In 2008 they released their 2nd album "Blues Heaven", which was chosen by the Blues Foundation in Memphis as one of the top 12 independent blues albums of the year. From bars to festivals to concert halls, CG & The Hammer continue to thrill audiences with a combination of passion, energy and honesty. Their music is never a re-creation of sounds from the past, but rather an updated, vital celebration of the blues as the soundtrack of real life.

Jay Lang is a Mississippi native who grew up in the Delta, where he attended many local blues festivals featuring the Piedmont and Delta styled blues. T-Model Ford was an early influence. Later he moved to Oxford, Mississippi where he played with members of the Burnside family and started his first band, Jay Lang & The Devils Due. Jay has since moved to Wisconsin, but his focus is still on the music he grew up listening to and playing. This is his third album release.

The album grew out of the pandemic. During his downtime, he reviewed his backlog of unrecorded songs and determined the time was right to do an acoustic record. The album consists of ten original songs and one cover. Jay plays guitar and bass on most cuts along with providing all vocals. He is joined on some cuts by Paul Taylor or Brad Porter on drums, Harold Tremblay on harmonica, Eric Carlton on piano, Bob Dowell on trombone on one track, and with Nate Robbins playing bass on tracks 8 & 10.

Jay is a talented songwriter with some interesting stories to tell, all of which just adds to his warm vocals and intriguing acoustic and slide guitar work. In recent years, Night Train's musical project has favored performance with acoustic instruments: harmonica, acoustic guitars, dobro, double bass, drums played mostly with brushes. "Blues for Breakfast" mirrors this "unplugged" setting and was recorded live on magnetic tape to capture the natural and slightly vintage sound.

The album contains original songs and Night Train reinterpretations of some classics of African-American music. Early in the morning, opens the CD and is a song from '47 by Louis Jordan and one of the first examples of Rhumba Blues. We wanted to keep the Latin feel, trying to emphasize through music the goliardic spirit that characterized much of the author's work.

Blues for breakfast, the song that gives the title to the CD, is an original shuffle and tells of the difficulty of getting up early in the morning after spending the night out playing. With I ain't got you we wanted to pay homage to both the author Jimmy Reed and the Blues Brothers, who must be credited with having contributed greatly to the spread of the Blues. For this reason, we recovered part of their arrangement. Hallelujah I Love Her So is one of Ray Charles' biggest R'n'B hits. We reinterpreted it in a swing key, slowing down the beat.

Mississippi bound, the second original of the album, is a funk song and has a programmatic title: it talks about the fact that to play the Blues you have to appropriate the roots of the genre. Kidney Stew is a fun piece by saxophonist Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson, which is rarely revisited. The theme is exposed by the harmonica – here amplified in Chicago blues style – while the gait is swinging.

With How long blues, a song from the late twenties by Leroy Carr, we wanted to immerse ourselves in the most traditional blues. For this we used the washboard – the washboard used as a percussive instrument – and the dobro guitar played with the slide. The funky style of New Orleans is the basis of the original If you don't love me, which recovers, for the lyrics, a classic Blues theme: the end of a love story.

Nobody knows you when you're down and out is a ballad written in the late twenties for the great Bessie Smith, the empress of the Blues, which boasts countless covers including one, splendid, included in Eric Clapton's album Unplugged, which we were inevitably inspired by. A train shuffle could not be missing – by affinity. Junior Parker's classic Mystery Train is revived here with a nod to rock'n'roll. The album closes with an instrumental, Nice and Easy, a jazzy Blues composed as a tribute to the great Charlie Christian and Kenny Burrell, guitarists placed in the jazz field but both characterized by a deep sense of the Blues. This piece makes use of the precious collaboration of the talented jazz musician Francesca Bertazzo Hart, present here with scat singing and solo guitar interventions.

The King Brothers are no strangers to the blues. With Lee on guitar and lead vocals, and Sam on drums, the siblings have an accumulated experience that spans fifty years. Raised in the San Francisco Bay area during the prolific 1960's, the brothers were influenced by singer Jimmy McCracklin, who lived across the street, and inspired them to take up music. The both played with Albert King, and The Texas Cannonball, Freddy King, is a second cousin so they carry on the distinctive name with honor and pride. This album was recorded over a ten-year period at three different studios: Sacred Cat in Sacramento, Sun Studios in Memphis, and High Rye Studios in Kintnersville, Pennsylvania. Accordingly, there is a very long list of performers on the album related to that time span and the disparity of locations where the songs were recorded. In the liner notes, James established that all of the songs “have an occult connection, and the blues and roots genre is the perfect format to explore events beyond everyday physical life. In this life, you may see apparitions, spontaneous auras, experience missing time, or witness something strange in the sky. One thing is for sure, most folks are skeptics, and no one believes this mess until it happens to YOU.”

James plays acoustic guitar and harmonica, provides the vocals and produced the album. The album is his third release in the blues and roots genre. Firecracker was released in 2009, and Southland was released in 2013. James grew up in the coastal southern towns of Biloxi and New Orleans but presently calls Philadelphia home. Regular bandmate Ron Baldwin joins him on organ and electric and acoustic piano. Seventeen other musicians fill out the list of performers on the album.

In his album notes, James references the album as an “esoteric twist in modern blues…mixing traditional blues and different approaches”. Clearly “Beatnik Jam” and “High Strangeness” are well outside the realm of blues or roots music. Some of the other songs might pass through some gray areas of blues but do find a basis in a turn on the blues. “Your Spell on Me” on the surface with its voodoo spells does sound like it would be well outside the realm of blues, but in fact might be one of the album’s bluesiest, easy-going songs with its love spell. Gary Rex Tanner writes, sings, records and produces music on his own terms just outside the established parameters of the commercial music business. Not clearly definable in contemporary terms, it only takes a few minutes of hearing his music to discern where he is coming from, for most people. His music, transcending genres, clearly allows the listener to share the experience being felt by the performer and make it the listener’s own. If you like straightforward music with wry humor, deep feeling, catchy melodies and thoughtful lyrics, try a couple of Tanner’s tunes and see if you agree. Tanner’s latest endeavor is a biographical book about his father, with an accompanying CD entitled “The Oklahoma Gamblin’ Man” He has produced six originals albums, whose songs have been covered by various artist in various genres. Originally from Modesto California now live in San Diego with his wife Daisy. Gary Rex Tanner has written songs for mainstream artists such as country singers Don Williams, Del Reeves, Henson Cargill and blues artists Corey Stevens and Saffire 'the uppity blues women.' His four commercial albums, co-produced by his pal Mississippi Slim, highlight his versatility as a singer/songwriter/producer. The son of R.L. Burnside continues to grow his father’s Hill Country blues sound but turning it into his own. Born in Holly Springs, Mississippi, he grew up in the backbone of the Hill Country sound. He learned to play by listening to the music that regularly occurred on the back porch of homes. Growing up he played alongside R.L. and his neighbor and another mentor in Junior Kimbrough. He initially played drums in his father’s band and was first recorded at age ten playing drums with the group Sound Groove Machine. He quickly moved on to playing guitar, bass and providing his own vocals. Still in his teens, he moved to Memphis where he encountered another mentor, Little Jimmy King, who had him playing regularly in his band. He also had the opportunity to play with Albert King, B.B. King and Bobby Bland among others. He released his first record, Live at the Mint, in 1998 on Lucky 13 Records. He grew up playing music with Luther and Cody Dickinson who lived in nearby Hernando, Mississippi which led him to join the brothers in The North Mississippi Allstars from 2001 – 2004. He was featured in that band’s 2003 release, Polaris, which featured Duwayne on lead vocals on two songs. In 2005, Duwayne released his second album, Under Pressure, again on Lucky 13 Records. That record led to his nomination for Best New Blues Artist at the 2006 W.C. Handy Blues Awards. He released a third album, Acoustic Burnside, in 2022. Along the way he opened his own juke joint, the Burnside Bar & Grill, in Holly Springs to carry on his family legacy.

James Harman, harp and vocals, has had an illustrious career having backed up Big Joe Turner, John Lee Hooker, Freddie King, Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Albert King, T-Bone Walker, Lowell Fulsom, Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson, Johnny “Guitar” Watson” and Albert Collins among others. Harman’s first album was released in 1987 however his most important work were four albums for the Black Top Record label including 1995’s “Black and White”. In 2000 he released “Mo’ Napkins Please” on Cannonball Records. His last recording was 2003’s “Lonesome Moon Trance” on the Pacific Blues imprint.

“Bonetime” is James Harman’s twelfth album and first for Electro-Fi. This compilation includes twelve previously unreleased tracks especially chosen by him for this project. Harman calls himself the King of Bones as many of the musicians he has worked with are gone. However these relics live on as do many of the great players contributing to this project.

The song “Bonetime” which opens the album features guitarists Junior Watson and Kirk Fletcher and the rhythm section of Buddy Clark, bass; and Alan West, drums. “I Am The World’s Badluckest Man” features that rhythm section but with Gene Taylor, piano, and Nathan James, guitar. Harman’s harp and clear vocals often times remind me of Kim Wilson.

“Ain’t It Crazy” features guitarists Fletcher and Jeff Turmes who later worked with Janiva Magness. “Big Boned Gal” features guitarist Kid Ramos. “Bad Feets/Bad Hair” features Fletcher, Turmes, Taylor, Clark, and West. Turmes is overdubbed playing multiple saxes and the background vocalists include a young Candye Kane.

Harman has twelve Blues Music Award nominations and won twice last year for his part on the “Remembering Little Walter” cd. Harman is now sixty-eight years young and he still tours. There are many stories I’m sure that he could tell. We have to thank Electro-Fi for releasing this as you can never have too much music from James Harman. I hope that there is much more that follows. Jay Lang is a Mississippi native that has spent most of his life exploring, performing, and writing southern roots music. Growing up in the Mississippi Delta, his earliest musical memories are from attending local blues festivals with the likes of T-Model Ford and Willie Foster. Later he moved to Oxford, Mississippi where he learned from playing with members of the Burnside family. It was in Oxford where he started Jay Lang & the Devils Due, a raucous, driven blues band that took no prisoners.

Blues Vol 2 is Jay's follow up to 2024's Blues Vol 1. It's mostly interpretation of acoustic blues standards like “Statesboro Blues” and “Squeeze Your Lemon” as well as originals and even a cover of the James Booker classic “Keep On Gwine”.

Nathan James is well-known for his work with James Harman, who took him under his wings and on the road when he was only very young. What would Nathan’s mother have said when James stood on the doorstep asking if he could do so? Sadly, Judy James passed away not long ago, so she is unable to tell the story. Nathan dedicated his new album "Intuition" to his mother. The title refers to a lesson his mom taught him, namely to trust it always. Ten all original songs on this album. Nathan almost literally did everything to create the music; drums, percussion, bass, double bass, guitars, hammond, banjo, mixing and mastering. Oh yeah, and he sings too, made the album cover himself and put it out on his Scared Cat Recordings label. By the way, he builds his own guitars too. Incredible. Ross Garren added additional keys and harmonica and Carl Sonny Leyland plays piano on two songs.

Fans who know Nathan from his work with James Harman and Kim Wilson might be a bit surprised here. Nathan is an excellent blues player, but his solo work is so much more than that. It is American roots music created by a temporary musician. His songs are personal and his production is a blend of old-school and modern sound engineering. After the pandemic, due to a series of life changes (including the passing away of his mother) Nathan relocated from the Southern California coast to the heart of the San Jacinto Mountains. They have appeared at the world famous ‘Chicago Blues Festival’ six times and toured virtually every one of the United States and most of Canada. Mack’s dynamic stage show is a favorite at clubs and festivals everywhere.

Nigel grew up in Saskatoon, Canada, listening to the music of the ‘60’s, Bebop jazz and Big Bands emanating from his Dad’s stereo. Saskatoon’s university and location guaranteed that everybody touring western Canada played there. The types of artists were varied and eclectic: Muddy Waters, Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Stevie Ray Vaughan, just to name a few.

The ‘blues explosion’ in the mid-eighties led to a weekly gig at ‘Buds on Broadway’, which featured touring blues artists from all over. As Saturday jam session host, Nigel met and performed with blues legends such as Eddy Shaw, Phil Guy, Amos Garrett, Brent Parkin and Big Dave Mclean.

In the spring of 1988 Nigel and his band relocated to the musical hotbed, Vancouver, BC. From this west coast base Mack built a strong local following and toured around western Canada.

In 1992, Nigel received a call from Chicago blues band leader Eddie Lusk inviting him to perform during the Chicago Blues Festival with ‘The Professor’s Blues Revue’. Nigel seized the opportunity and began touring the US with a vengeance, racking up seventeen American/Canadian coast to coast tours over the next ten years.

1996 saw the release of Mack’s first full length all-original CD High Price to Play. It garnered critical acclaim, a nomination for ‘Best Blues/R&B Album’ at the 1997 ‘West Coast Music Awards’ and three songs on major TV sound tracks!

Nigel Mack followed High Price to Play with Road Rage, released in 2001. Essentially a live album, Road Rage blends blues classics with original songs and three studio tracks. It continues to be a favorite among fans.

When not touring, Nigel spends the majority of time recording and performing in and around Chicago. A decade earlier, the seeds of this move had been planted. On that first trip, Eddie Lusk had said, “This is where you should be!” With the release of ‘Back In Style’, his chart-topping, all-original album, Nigel Mack is building on past successes and bringing his own brand of Chicago blues to a new generation of blues fans.

The nine sides on Unk in Funk (1974) are among the last newly recorded material that Muddy Waters (vocals/guitar) would issue during his nearly 30 year association with Chess Records. Backing up the Chicago blues icon is a band he'd carry with him for the remainder of his performing career, including Pinetop Perkins (piano), Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson (guitar), Bob Margolin (guitar), Calvin "Fuzz" Jones (bass), and Willie "Big Eyes" Smith (drums). They run through a better than average selection of Waters' classics with newer compositions more or less tossed in, presumably to keep the track list fresh.

Although Waters certainly has nothing to prove, he attacks his old catalog with the drive and command of a man putting it all on the line. That same spirit of quality and authenticity shapes his umpteenth overhaul of "Rollin' and Tumblin'," as Waters' guitar - the only time he plays on the whole platter - rekindles his singular sounding fretwork. Demonstrating why they were suitable rhythmic foils for Waters, Jones and Smith's gritty timekeeping perfectly holds down the slinky methodical groove churning beneath the update of "Just Had to Be with You." This allows the artist a chance to let loose with some inspired vocal improvisations.

The bouncy frolic of "Trouble No More" and the vintage Chicago R&B vibe of "Drive My Blues Away" offer the most authentic presentation of Waters then and now. While the newer songs, "Katie" and "Waterboy, Waterboy," reveal that the ol' mule still has a bit of kick in him yet. "Electric Man" is one of two cuts by Amelia Cooper (Waters' granddaughter) and Terry Abrahamson, typifying the style of self-aggrandizing lyrical plodding over generic blues changes that had marred several of the blues legends' later efforts.

All is not lost, however, thanks to some playful interaction between Waters and harp blower Carey Bell Harrington. Cooper and Abrahamson's other contribution - "Unk in Funk" - shares its credit along with talent agent Ted Kurland. Again, while the sentiment is well-intended, the playing is marginalized with little to no substantive territory gained. /Lindsay Planer, AllMusic

Despite the prominent presence of celebrated blues artist Howlin’ Wolf in her family tree, singer Zora Young (1948) grew up singing not blues, but gospel. Even when the Mississippi native shook off her roots at the age of seven to relocate with her family to Chicago, it wasn’t until later that she switched over to R&B, and evolved into a powerhouse blues vocalist with three decades of experience behind. She has performed with a long list of artists, including Junior Wells, Jimmy Dawkins, Bobby Rush, Buddy Guy, Professor Eddie Lusk, Albert King and B.B. King.

Sarah Streeter (1953) was born in Mississippi and raised in Chicago, from early childhood, where she sang in gospel choirs in South Chicago churches. At age 14, she began singing blues at the Morgan’s Lounge Club, and in the 1970s she played with musicians such as Sunnyland Slim, Magic Slim, The Aces, Buddy Guy and Junior Wells.

Bonnie Lee (1931-2006) was an Chicago blues singer, known as ‘Sweetheart of the Blues’, best remembered for her lengthy working relationships with Sunnyland Slim and Willie Kent. She was born Jessie Lee Frealls in Bunkie, Louisiana, and raised in Beaumont, Texas. In 1958 she moved to Chicago, and chose the stage name of Bonnie Lee, working as both a dancer and singer. In 1982, partnered with Zora Young and Big Time Sarah as ‘Blues with the Girls’, Bonnie Lee toured Europe and cut this joint album in Paris, France.

Bourbon Jones was originally founded in 1993 by Long Beach residents Chris Hanlin, Mario Barmosca, Mikey Meyer and Anthony Arvisu. After touring extensively throughout the Midwest, deep South, and West Coast, the band settled into a now legendary four year Sunday afternoon residency at the Blue Café in Long Beach. Over the years, many musicians came to sit in: Rocco DeLucca, Hook Herrera, Bernie Pearl, Guitar Wooten, legendary Louisiana harpist Lazy Lester, and many former members of such bands as War, the Blasters, Fiona Apple, and the James Harman band.

The whole thing started with me and Barmosca. It was 1992, and I had just moved back down to Long Beach after a disastrous relationship up in LA. I had no band, no girl, no car, and few friends. For awhile I slept on people's couches until I could get an apartment. I was really starting over. All this made me pretty depressed. I wanted to make music, but I didn’t know what direction to take. I really just wanted to play some blues.

We were 4 years into making music the Bourbon Jones way when the idea of doing a "gospel" record was introduced. Barmosca grabbed the bull by the balls and threw us all aboard The Glory Train. Approximately 1year in songwriting and rehearsing (mostly the 5 hours gig every Sunday at The Blue Cafe) with production guidance by Stephen Hodges readied us for a long day of tracking at Capitol Studio B. Fourteen songs were tracked live in a ten hour session, a couple of overdubs and mixing for a few days at Jabbz in Long Beach and here you have it. Far from being a religious record Glory Train is in the tradition of Alan Lomax, a musical journey to the promised land. /Chris Hanlin
