When I returned to the UK, I was looking for good players, but what I found were great musicians through Pete Giles’s Morley Cheeks jam sessions. Of course, it’s very difficult to maintain a fixed band with guys who are constantly in demand. What I have is bunch of musicians who enjoy playing my material. This team started with Dave McCarthy - a man with more energy than a herd of hounds - on drums, and mild mannered but monstrous Andy Patterson on bass and double bass. Around this time, I was also recording an album with Mark Lewis - a great engineer, bass player, singer, and ‘musical polymath’ - who introduced me to Chris Hillman who constantly makes me smile with his fabulous phrases on pedal and lap steel. With gigs, starting to come through, more players were added to the list: a brace of brilliant Liams - Morson and Mullany on keyboards, Mike Sneyd playing great on his amazing bass stick; Al Grant adding tasty cool sax to the mix; on drums, the unflappable groove that is Alex ‘Toddy’ and shy minimalist Ruben Sheridan; Dan Hall adding some searing guitar, and last but defintely not least the legendary Bo Lee on bass. AND in warmer climes Enrico Giovagnola on keys & sax, the funkmeister Guido Pietrella on bass and Gianluca Meconcelli drums. These are my musical friends helping me to play my music. Thanks guys.
