The San Francisco based Anthony Paule Soul Orchestra is the 2007 brainchild of guitarist/songwriter Anthony Paule. Inspired by authentic Blues recordings of the ’60s and ’70s, this dramatic horn driven powerhouse took shape. Known for having top tier singers like Frany Bey and Wee Willie Walker, the Anthony Paule Soul Orchestra invites newest member, vocalist Willy Jordan to the stage. Having worked with Elvin Bishop’s Big Fun Trio, Willy’s commanding vocals and unpretentious stage presence give audiences an honest fresh and heartfelt experience. Past recordings have garnered the Anthony Paul Orchestra seventeen Blues Music Award nominations. This new album is their sixth for Blue Dot Records. The Orchestra has their own captivating sound but comparisons can be made to Bobby “Blue” Bland, Bobby Womack, Otis Redding, Tyrone Davis and Al Green.

Produced by Anthony Paule, his wife Christine Vitale, Larry Batiste, and Willy Jordan most songs are written by them in various combinations. The album opens with a great vocal from Jordan with a guitar solo by Paule; throughout the album Endre Tarcy plays bass, while Kevin Hayes plays drums. Also included through the album is the four-piece horn section of Derek James, trombone; Ethan Pires, trumpet; Charles McNeal, tenor saxophone; and Bob Sudduth, baritone saxophone. Also featured through the recording are backing vocalists Omega Rae, and Nona Brown.

The album kicks off with the chilling “You Ain’t Old Til You Cold”. The title track “What Are You Waiting For? follows; the song possesses a familiarity that makes it friendly and relatable. “One Way” includes Jordan crooning the lyric “I’m gonna’ buy you a ticket, and make it one-way”. ” You’re Somebody Else’s Baby Too” includes Lufrano on keyboards as Jordan sings “I saw you last night and I knew you’re somebody else’s baby too”.

On “Back Up Plan” with the great four-piece horn section Jordan chimes “baby here I am, I’m gonna be your man, that’s my backup plan. “Where Is Justice” is written with the addition of M. Smith. “Bruised” features an infectious beat as Jordan sings “it started way back when…what did you do, I’m so confused, you left me bruised”. On “Love Out Loud”, Jordan chimes “what do you do when you wake up with love…yesterday is gone…open your heart, love out loud”, with some more great sax from McNeal and Sudduth. On the follow-up Jordan sings “that’s how I remember it , baby, “That’s Not How The Story Goes”.

“No ToFu” is a funky tune featuring the background vocalists, The Sons of The Soul Revivers; Dwayne, Walter, and James Morgan, in a ‘call and response’ with Jordan singing “bring me some barbeque, I don’t want no tofu”.
“After A While” is a song solely written by Vitale, which was the first song she heard Jordan sing, and it inspired this fabulous album “after a while, when we meet I’ll say hello, when we meet, oh baby, I’ll be fine, I’ll feel the new day, after a while”.

The Anthony Paul Orchestra shares observations of life’s hopes without finger wagging or preachy rhetoric. Jordan glides through this varied musical landscape with captivating confidence. The release date of October 25th should re-establish the Anthony Paule Soul Orchestra as the best little big band in the land. ~Richard Ludmerer

Frank Bey—a staple of the Philadelphia music scene—has teamed up with long time Bay Area guitarist Anthony Paule. Together they have recorded this tour de force of ten choice, live performances ranging from old school soul to blues. All tracks were recorded live on July 20, 2012 at Biscuits & Blues nightclub in San Francisco. Paule’s seven piece band is comprised of the Bay Area’s finest musicians and the results are stunning. Musicians are Anthony Paule; Guitar, Paul Revelli; Drums, Paul Olguin; Bass, Nancy Wright; Tenor Sax, Mike Rinta; Trombone, Tony Lufrano; Keyboards, and Steffen Kuehn; Trumpet. The audio quality of the recording is excellent…something which can be elusive in a live recording. All tracks are previously unreleased.
Frank Bey began his singing career performing gospel at the tender age of 4. Along with his brother and two cousins, their group The Rising Sons toured around Georgia making live appearances as well as radio broadcasts. At age 17 he joined the Otis Redding Revue working as the opening act for several years. During his time with Otis Redding, Frank honed his singing and performing skills to a world class level. After a long hiatus from the music business during the 80s and 90s, Frank is back on the scene in full force, wowing audiences around the country.
Anthony Paule has been a mainstay of the Bay Area music scene for many years touring and recording with luminaries such as Boz Scaggs, Charlie Musselwhite, Maria Muldaur, The Johnny Nocturne Band, Mark Hummel, and others. Anthony has released two solo CDs and can often be heard fronting his own group. This recording puts Paule in full stride with this eight piece soul band setting, finding him in his element backing up a fine singer.
This release will be receiving an intense press and radio promotion campaign which will include key publications and programs around the U.S. as well as internationally. Promotion of this release will include extensive touring of the U.S. and Europe.

11. Don't Ask Me How I Feel (4:37)

Not Goin' Away is the third release from the critically acclaimed Bey Paule Band. Their previous release Soul For Your Blues received 2 BMA (Blues Music Award) nominations, and wound up on the Downbeat Magazine critics poll as well as the Living Blues Magazine Best of 2013 list. This resulted in two European tours, and a many prestigious festival appearances throughout North America in 2014. With this success the band started writing songs for this latest release. Ten of the twelve tracks are original and they are bound to tickle the fancy of any fan of traditional soul, blues, and R&B music. Although the music from this eight piece power house is reminiscent of Otis Redding, Bobby Bland and B.B. King, they have managed to put their own stamp on this style of American Roots music.

The Frank Bey and Anthony Paule Band, eight pieces of soul-blues musical genius, has been mesmerizing West Coast audiences since 2011. Two CDs released in 2013, You Don’t Know Nothing and Soul For Your Blues earned the band two Blues Music Award nominations, and an acclaimed show-stopping performance at the prestigious awards ceremony. All this well deserved attention has paved the way for two International tours during the summer of 2014. Frank Bey’s hypnotic vocals and Paule’s lofty guitar playing, keep their band on a shelf all by itself. However, if comparisons need to be made, they would be likened to Bobby Bland, B.B. King, Ray Charles, and Otis Redding. They are currently working on their third album set for an early 2015 release.

Born and raised in Millen, Georgia, Frank Bey began his singing career performing gospel at the tender age of 4. Along with his brother and two cousins, their group “The Rising Sons” toured around The South making live appearances as well as radio broadcasts. At age 17 he joined the Otis Redding Revue working as the opening act for several years. During his time with Otis Redding, Frank learned to captivate and mesmerize an audience with a song. After a long hiatus from the music business during the 80s and early 90s, Frank came back better than ever.

Anthony Paule has been a driving force of the Bay Area music scene for many years and has previously released two solo CDs. In addition to fronting is own band, he’s toured and recorded with Boz Scaggs, Charlie Musselwhite, Bo Diddley, Maria Muldaur, Barbara Lynn, Norton Buffalo, The Johnny Nocturne Band, Mark Hummel, and others. The release of the two CDs with Frank Bey, “You Don’t Know Nothing” and “Soul For Your Blues” finds Paule in his element, in full stride with this eight piece soul band... backing up a fine singer.

13. I Left My Heart In San Francisco (2:15)

I just received the newest release, Soul For Your Blues, by Frank Bey & Anthony Paule Band and a not only clever but appropriate name. Opening with I Don't Know Why, a smokin' soul track featuring great heartfelt vocals from Bey and great horn backing from Mike Rinta (trombone and tuba), Nancy Wright (sax) and Steffen Kuehn on trumpet. I'm Leavin' You maintains the sould feel but crosses over closer to the blues with a solid bottom by Paul Olguin (bass) and Paul Revelli (drums). Anthony Paule lays out some really hot guitar riffs on this track again with backing from the dynamo horn section. I Just Can't Go On, written by Christine Vitale, has a really solid soul feel and conjures images of Bey's earlier employer, Otis Redding, who died 45 years to the day of the completion of these recordings. Paule steps up with a nice guitar guitar solo on this track which isn't overpowering but pinpoint on. Super job by all. Don't Mess With The Monkey is a high stepping R&B style track and one of the most memorable tracks on the release with it's catchy melody and hook. Rick Estrin adds cool harp riffs to this already fun track. Buzzard Luck has a real old style club blues swing feel. One of the best tracks to feature Bey's vocal smoothness, also features a different side of Paule on guitar. Real nice. On straight up blues ballad, You're Someone Else's Baby Too, the band really gets a strong groove on, with Bey leading belting out the lead. The warmth of the horns on this track is really super and Paule plays some particularly articulate and melodic guitar lead on this track. I Want To Change Your Mind is another strong R&B track again with Bey leading strong and with rich backing vocals from Lisa Leuscher, Larry Batiste and Ron E. Beck. BB King like blues riffs flow from Paule's fingers adding a nice blues touch to the mix. Instrumental track Smokehouse lets the band get into a New Orleans style blues jam. A really hot trombone solo from Mike Rinta, cool key work from Tony Lufrano and trumpet work from Kuehn are great adds to Paule's lead guitar work. On Percy Mayfield's Nothing Stay's The Same Forever, Rinta plays the lead intro on tuba, something I rarely hear and it's cool, with Bey following closely on vocal. Turning with a funky beat, this is a strong track on every facet. The band is well mixed with just dabs of sound from each member. This is a great track! Wrapping the release is a swinging instrumental version of I Left My Heart In San Francisco. Paule pulls out all the stops leading the way with clean guitar lead. The horns keep the track full and Revelli on drums make this track rock. ~Review by Bman
