Blues artist Doug MacLeod earned an international reputation and won multiple awards for his tough, fleet-fingered guitar playing (typified by 2023's Raw Blues 1) and fluid bottleneck solos (the latter highlighted on 2015's Doug's Slide Guitar), as well as his impassioned and soulful vocal style. MacLeod most often performs on acoustic guitar, but he's also well-versed in electric styles (as on 1984's No Road Back Home) and a respected songwriter and magazine columnist. Doug MacLeod was born in New York City on April 21, 1946, and his family relocated to Raleigh, North Carolina shortly after his birth. MacLeod had a difficult childhood marked by abuse, and he had a severe stutter. As he struggled to overcome his speech impediment, he learned to play the guitar.

The Doug MacLeod Band released four studio records but these never captured completely what the band was about. In Doug's own opinion these live recordings do. Thanks to Jim Ho Lee who recorded the band live in the tradition of the Grateful Dead Deadheads this music lives on.

These songs are all written by Doug and were released on the albums including the unavailable German releases. The musicians on these tracks include Ed Czach, Mike Thompson, and Rich Wenzel on Keyboards. Eric Ajaye and Bobby Tsukumoto on Bass. And last but certainly not least Lee Spath on the Drums.

For A Soul To Claim, Doug teamed with legendary producer and engineer Jim Gaines (Santana, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Luther Allison, Steve Miller Band) in Gaines’ Tennessee studio, not far from Doug’s new home on the Mississippi River in Memphis.

Like the old masters who taught him, MacLeod’s music expresses life and times through an elusive quality that may simply be a keen sense of what matters most. “There’s humor in my songs, but also messages on how to make it through this life. That’s what I learned from the old guys.”

Through twelve new MacLeod originals, Doug and his trusty Waterloo guitar P-nut are joined by Memphis studio veterans Rick Steff/keyboards, Dave Smith/bass, and Steve Potts/drums for five tracks, six tracks feature Doug alone and one is a solo instrumental. Liner notes from Doug MacLeod and Deems Taylor award-winning journalist Dan Forte (Vintage Guitar), provide liner notes for the release.

The way Doug sees it, “Blues is about the journey, it’s about speaking honestly from your heart. It’s a music of hope. No matter what cards you have been dealt—either the cards you started out with in this life, or the cards you’re holding now—if it’s not a good hand, you can overcome it.”
A perennial Blues Music Award nominee and multiple Blues Music Award winner including Acoustic Artist of The Year and Acoustic Album of the Year, A Soul To Claim is Doug’s 22nd album.

Dubb is what George Harmonica Smith called Doug. He couldn't (or wouldn't) say Doug, so he called him Dubb. Like all the albums Doug has done since 1994 there are no over-dubs on this one. You hear a performance, a musical snapshot in time by one of the last torchbearers of the acoustic blues tradition. Doug doesn't like perfect records instead he likes the 'grease' and what he calls 'stretching of time'. To him, that's where feeling lives. This record contains 12 original songs and like his previous records it is produced by sound guru Joe Harley.

Doug MacLeod - Break The Chain

11. Going Home (1:43)
12. Break The Chain (4:06)

In this release, Doug MacLeod continues to explore the breadth and depth of the human condition. Recorded by Reference’s Grammy-winning engineer ‘Prof.’ Keith O. Johnson at Skywalker Sound in Marin County, California, Break The Chain brings twelve new MacLeod originals. Each song is extremely personal and at the same time, universal; covering subjects topical, humorous, and soulful; from the satirical to the sublime.

The title work, Break The Chain, composed and performed with his son Jesse, focuses on breaking the cycle of family violence and abuse. A powerful concern all too many are familiar with, Doug and Jesse confront this pervasive issue directly and personally, bringing it out of the shadows. Together, they share the healing, reconciliation and peace available to all who work to prevent the cycle from repeating and to “Break The Chain”.

The album is co-produced by Doug MacLeod and Janice Mancuso. Bassist Denny Croy, drummer Jimi Bott and percussionist Oliver Brown join Doug in duo, trio and quartet settings. Like all ‘Prof.’ Johnson’s sessions, Break The Chain was recorded live, in real- time, with no overdubs or effects. It is being released on compact disc with HDCD, as high-resolution and conventional downloads and later, as a premium 2-LP set.

A prolific singer, songwriter, engaging storyteller, and masterful guitarist, Doug is a perennial Blues Music Award nominee and multiple Blues Music Award winner including Acoustic Artist Of The Year and Acoustic Album of the Year. An active touring artist, MacLeod supports his beloved St. Louis Cardinals during baseball season and, when at home, enjoys cooking for wife Patti Joy.

The jazzy Rock It Till the Cows Come Home and You Got It Good (and That Ain’t Bad) bookend the eclectic sounding Exactly Like This, Doug MacLeod’s latest offering in a career that spans nearly 30 years. MacLeod considers Exactly Like This to be a tribute disc of sorts—the guitar riff in Vanetta is an obvious nod to John Lee Hooker, while Jerry Reed’s influence can be heard on Ain’t It Rough? Others songs, according to MacLeod, reflect the influences of his other musical heroes - Tony Joe White, Wes Montgomery, Louis Jordan and Duke Ellington. Recorded live in the studio with no overdubs, ExactlyLike This finds MacLeod and his band laying it down in the moment, or as MacLeod tells us in the liner notes, “So, since I never play the same song the same way twice, you folks listening to this album are the only people in the history of the world that will ever hear these songs EXACTLY LIKE THIS.”

We are preparing another great release ! Between 2002 and 2008 we released four great studio CD’s by Doug MacLeod on Black and Tan Records. But since the real magic comes out during his shows we also recorded a live concert in 2006. These live recordings were released on a limited edition concert DVD (The Blues In Me). The DVD is no longer available and we think it is time to make this great music available on other platforms. We edited the recordings and extracted eleven complete songs from the two live sets. This will be the first official (audio) release of Doug playing live as a solo artist.

miXendorp is the project of one man from the Netherlands, who’s dedicated to updating the blues for present times. His recent release on European label Black And Tan Records is prefaced with exciting potential: “The blues used to be party music; now it can be played again at the hippest modern parties, festival and clubs….. and still feel down home.”

The description for Black And Tan Edits reads a bit like an infomercial, and there are some cheese qualities here for sure. But the blues have been bastardized and neglected plenty in the present day, and these musical spins are at least unconventionally fun party music that remind one of the heyday of the genre.

miXendorp describes his mixes as “blues + beat”, and the combination is apt; he applies everything from house beats and new age percussion to classic singer-songwriter blues. Such modern day genre-mashing turns the blues into club-ready hits which feel so much like a merging of two worlds that it becomes important to remember that the originals are not relics of the past; they are in fact fairly recent, pulled from the past 14 years of releases by Black And Tan.

[5:41] 11. Ronnie Earl - Ronnie's Blues
[4:28] 12. Mighty Sam Mcclain - Somebody Help Me

This album is probably the best SACD recording released to-date. The air around musicians and instruments is simply jaw-dropping; it'll startle you from track 1's Get Up, Get Ready by Terry Evans. By the time you reach track 4 - Too Proud by Mighty Sam McClain, you'll probably be too drowned by the technical perfection of this disc and you'll be having goosebumps already. If you still manage to get to track 9 - 50 Pounds of Bone by Robert Lucas, you may be at the pinnacle of musical orgasm to the point of almost getting emotionally disturbed. I swear there was a moment when I can almost see Mr. Lucas inside the room! Down to the decay of the last note on the last track, when everything suddenly becomes dead silent, it'll take you about 2 minutes to realize that you are only in your room. ~Nick Salsamento

Doug MacLeod displays several sides of his artistry on this AudioQuest CD. His music ranges from solo folk numbers in the idiom of Leadbelly (but covering different subjects) to country blues with a trio, a few romps with the wailing harmonica of Carey Bell and two collaborations with the country fiddle of Heather Hardy. MacLeod's appealing voice is easy to understand, his lyrics are thoughtful and fresh (even when covering universal subjects) and his melodic guitar playing is versatile. MacLeod's well-conceived set should appeal to collectors of acoustic blues and folk music. ~Scott Yanow
