It started with three classmates who started a band in high school. Since then, Mönsterås Blues Band has played countless gigs, started their own festival and made a big name for themselves in Swedish blues music – a name the band did not choose themselves. This year they are celebrating 50 years with a new album and a party at Kalmar Theatre. Thanks to a diary entry, there is an exact date: May 2, 1974. The day the Mönsterås Blues Band saw the light of day. At that time, the then classmates Calle Engström, Mats Grönqvist and Peo Fahlström were no more than high school age.

Paul Geremia is a guitar-picking veteran, a true blues scholar blending jazz and acoustic country styles for over 40 years. Called “one of the finest blues artists” by Rolling Stone, he is a husky, soulful singer and a master of both the six and twelve-string guitar as well as a first-rate harmonica and piano player. He has an innate sense of the humor and drama of the blues, delivering rollicking songs of loving and living with a wink and a smile. Paul’s background isn’t typical for a bluesman. He is a third generation Italian American who, as he laughingly puts it, “was born in the Providence River Delta.” Growing up in Rhode Island, he bought blues albums at the Salvation Army and heard R&B and jazz from recently relocated African Americans who had moved up from the southeast coast. His first instrument was a harmonica, and in his teens he started fooling around on a friend’s electric guitar. Paul’s dad had an acoustic guitar (a plywood Stella) that he never played, and when he left for college, he took it from behind the couch where it had been gathering dust. It was in college that he really started to focus on the instrument, learning to play from fingerpicking friends who were fans of Chet Atkins. During the early part of the Sixties folk revival, Paul got a taste for acoustic blues. At various folk festivals, he heard a lot of young white guys playing blues, guys like Tim Hardin and Tom Rush. Before long, he had the opportunity to hear the great black blues players, men who had recorded in the Twenties and Thirties and were being “rediscovered” by a new generation. Pretty soon Paul was living and playing in the middle of a thriving blues community and had the opportunity to meet some of the greatest players. As his style shows, he’s learned something from every musician he’s met, including Pink Anderson, Fred McDowell, Blind John Davis, Carl Johnson, Skip James, Son House, and Howlin’ Wolf. Paul has recorded eleven solo albums, and has been featured on numerous anthologies, including Preachin’ the Blues: The Music of Mississippi Fred McDowell (Telarc), which earned a Grammy nomination in 2002. His superb recordings have made him a critical favorite and place him firmly among the legends who inspired and influenced him over the past three decades. Two of his Red House releases, Gamblin’ Woman Blues and Self Portrait in Blues, were both nominated for W.C. Handy Awards. His new live collection Love My Stuff captures Paul at his best—on a stage in front of an audience, giving powerful and soulful performances. Paul’s performances are a smooth blend of blues styles and traditions. “The whole thing, in a nutshell, is you just absorb as much as you can,” he explained in Acoustic Guitar. He is remarkably well-versed in the music of the great players: the Delta slide of Robert Johnson, the ragtime style of Willie McTell and Blind Blake, Leadbelly and Lemon Jefferson’s Texas sound, the uptown blues of Scrapper Blackwell, and Lonnie Johnson and Teddy Blum’s jazz. In his interpretations as well as original pieces, Paul incorporates the techniques of these legends into a distinctive style that is very much his own. It is no wonder that his list of admirers includes such guitar legends as Bonnie Raitt and John Hammond.

A treasured actor and blues musician, Jim Byrnes began his love with acting and music when he was still a small child. In college he found acting jobs easily until the draft sent him to war instead of to Hollywood. Byrnes kept his dreams, and himself, alive, and returned to follow his original goals as best he could after his tour of duty was over. A car accident put his acting career on hold again, so he turned his full attention toward music. Over the next few decades, he recorded a number of albums, and even found his way back to acting, both in films and television. In 1995 he landed a well-deserved spot in the British Columbia Entertainment Hall of Fame.

James Thomas Kevin Byrnes was born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1948. Byrnes started his musical training with piano lessons at the tender age of five. Even that early in his life, things were never easy for him. An illness almost ended not only his budding musical skills, but his life. By the time he entered high school, he had taught himself to play the guitar. He also gained an interest in acting around that time, and began taking drama classes that continued when he started college. Being drafted into the Vietnam War put a temporary hold on his career around the end of the turbulent '60s.

Around 1970, Byrnes moved to Toronto, Canada, and launched into acting and music again. Just when he seemed to be getting a foothold in some kind of career, fate knocked him down again, this time with a serious car wreck that took almost any chance of acting away from him. He still had his music, and put his heart into it. He landed gigs wherever he could, touring with other bands through Canada and into the United States. Before the '70s ended, he put together a band of his own called the Jim Byrnes Band. It was while working with them that he recorded his debut album, Burning. It was released under the Polydor Records label in 1981. A year later, he received his first big music nomination for Most Promising Male Vocalist from the Juno Awards.

Byrnes' sophomore album, I Turned My Nights into Days, didn't appear until 1987. That same year he landed his first recurring role in a television series; the name of the show was Wiseguy. He spent nearly four years working on the series. He also did a number of guest shots on other shows, and even some work in films. In 1993 he was cast as Joe Dawson on the popular Highlander television series and later in its spin-off, The Raven. With Highlander helping his fame, Byrnes recorded a third full-length album, That River. It was released under the Stony Plain Records label in 1995. In 1998, Stony Plain pulled his last two albums together and released them as a combination CD. After releasing Love Is a Gamble on One Coyote Music in 2001, he signed with Black Hen Music in 2004. That year's Fresh Horses opened up a series of albums for the label that, as of the release of Long Hot Summer Nights in 2017, numbered at seven. /Biography by Charlotte Dillon, AllMusic

Phil Guy didn't eclipse his older brother Buddy's status as a blues superstar, and in reality, Phil's funky brand of blues was not captured correctly for posterity. But he remained an active attraction on the Chicago circuit, following in his sibling's footsteps and patiently waiting for his own star to rise up until his death.

Like his sibling, Phil Guy played with harpist Raful Neal (for a decade) before leaving the Baton Rouge scene for Chicago in 1969. There he played with his brother's high-energy organization as well as behind harpist Junior Wells (Phil handled guitar duties with Sammy Lawhorn on Wells' underrated mid-'70s Delmark album On Tap). Phil Guy cut albums of his own for JSP; they were generally lacking in originality if not spirit. Boz Scaggs considers Out of the Blues to be the final installment in a (primarily covers) trilogy that began with 2013's Memphis and continued with 2015's A Fool to Care, excellent outings that reflected Scaggs' desire to reach back into the cradle of inspiration. This set looks back to his 1965 debut album Boz (a solo acoustic covers set released only in Sweden by Polydor) and 1997's criminally overlooked Come on Home, a woolly, house-rocking collection of (mostly) vintage R&B and soul-blues covers, for its foundation. While these early recordings don't necessarily sound similar, they make use of the work of a particular set of performers and songwriters - including Jimmy Reed and Don Robey (credited with many of Bobby "Blue" Bland's hits) - who have always provided inspiration and grounding throughout his lifetime.

Whereas Scaggs' two previous offerings were produced by Steve Jordan, Boz opted to co-produce Out of the Blues with Chris Tabarez and Michael Rodriguez, creating an impression of intimacy and loose immediacy that ranks with the swampier feel of Come on Home. His band here includes holdovers bassist Willie Weeks, Jim Cox, and rhythm guitarist Ray Parker, Jr. as well drummer Jim Keltner (the kitman on Come on Home), and guitarists Doyle Bramhall II and Charlie Sexton; there is also a selectively and impactfully used three-piece horn section.

The set includes two Robey tunes closely associated with Bland: the souled-out nighttime groover "I've Just Got to Forget You" (with its gorgeously charted horns) and the organ-drenched jazz-blues of "The Feeling Is Gone" (whose horn section sounds like the Jazz Crusaders). And while the vibe on those two numbers is more sultry that raucous, that bill gets filled with an uptempo fingerpoppin' version of Reed's "Down in Virginia," with Scaggs delivering a punchy I-IV-V progression to rival the master's, and Jimmy McCracklin's swinging jump blues "I've Just Got to Know," with a burning guitar break from Sexton.

Interestingly, these tracks, fine as they are, are not the album's high points. Opener "Rock and Stick" is one of four tunes written or co-written by Jack "Applejack" Walroth, a compadre of Scaggs since the 1960s who has worked with everyone from Elvin Bishop to Mike Bloomfield, from Steve Miller to Cash McCall. Its shuffling, smoky, seductive futuristic West Coast blues is elevated by the composer's harmonica and Bramhall's evocative, slippery guitar solo. The punchy six-string riff on the composer's "Radiator 110" is played in tandem by Scaggs, Walroth, and Steve Freund with a lonesome highway harmonica break that rises like steam heat from the middle eight. Scaggs and Walroth co-wrote the thumping Chuck Berry-esque "Little Miss Night and Day," with lead breaks from both Sexton and Bramhall.

The set's outlier is a moody, deep-blue read of Neil Young's "On the Beach," where Scaggs' trademark croon invests its minimal melody with a dark passion. Out of the Blues may be an excellent final chapter in this roots trilogy, but stands on its own as one of Scaggs' most sure-footed releases. /Thom Jurek, AllMusic

Nacomi Tanaka or sometimes simply referred to as Nacomi is a Japanese blues singer, guitarist and songwriter. She often expands her boundaries beyond blues music into sounds of American roots and Japanese pops sung in Japanese. She is currently based in Kobe.

Life and career Nacomi was born in Kyoto. Influenced since youth by her father who loved foreign music, she grew up listening to American music such as country and jazz. She picked up an acoustic guitar when she entered middle school, and formed her own band during high school days.

She studied at Doshisha University, and while she was a student there, she entered an amateur band contest "8.8Rockday" with Karasuma Shako, an R&B band she had formed with friends she met at the college music club, and they proceeded to the finals.

She found work after college graduation and retired from performing then, but in 2000, she returned to the music scene. In 2001, she met Shinji Shiotsugu, a renowned blues guitarist, and joined his band where she stayed for the next two years. After she left the band, she formed her own.

In 2007, she made a CD debut with album Grabbed My Heart. The following year in 2008, she appeared at the Taipei International Blues Bash in Taiwan for the first time, and she continued to play at the event for the next 7 years. She has been proactively performing overseas appearing at events outside Japan such as the Little Walter Music Festival in Alexandria, Louisiana (three times after 2014), and a festival in Shanghai.

In 2015, she released an album with covers of Little Walter titled Nacomi Sings Little Walter with her blues band Nacomi & The Blues Temple.

In 2019, she took part in Johnny Burgin’s album recording session done in Japan. It was released the following year by Delmark Records titled No Border Blues. P-Vine Records released it in Japan under the Japanese title ブルースに国境はない which is a direct translation of the original.

In 2021, P-Vine Records released Nacomi's best compilation album Onward And Upward containing three new songs. An original album The Nacometers followed from the label in 2023. The Nacometers is another band led by Nacomi apart from the Blues Temple. With this album, her sound is more towards American roots music.

Nacomi announced that Nacomi & The Blues Temple would break up in December of 2024 after 11 years since its formation. Pierre Ochiai, the guitarist of the band’s physical strength limitation was the reason given

Renovation Blues Band is a dedicated project presenting upbeat & cutting edge blues to enthusiastic audiences. Swingin' grooves, shufflin' beats, funky rhythms are the calling card. An engaging band that has been featured at the Vancouver Island Blues Bash and the Nanaimo Summertime Blues several times, as well at many Island pubs and music venues - they just love to entertain.

Playing a variety of blues-influenced music, rooted in the Chicago, Texas, and West Coast traditions, the vocals, deep rhythms, and hot solos never quit. "Muddy Side Up" is the debut recording and was recorded live and produced by the band, with mastering done by the able Zak Cohen at The Woodshop studio.

B.B. King was an American blues singer, electric guitarist, songwriter, and record producer. King introduced a sophisticated style of soloing based on fluid string bending and shimmering vibrato that influenced many later electric blues guitarists. King was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, and is considered one of the most influential blues musicians of all time, earning the nickname "The King of the Blues", and one of the "Three Kings of the Blues Guitar" along with Albert King and Freddie King. King was known for performing tirelessly throughout his musical career, appearing at more than 200 concerts per year on average into his 70s. In 1956, he reportedly appeared at 342 shows.

(Note: Haven't found any specific info on the origin of these remastered tracks. My guess is that this is yet another one of many un-official digital releases around. Still, it's hard to go wrong with B.B. King.)

In 2015, she released an album with covers of Little Walter titled Nacomi Sings Little Walter with her blues band Nacomi & The Blues Temple.

In 2019, she took part in Johnny Burgin’s album recording session done in Japan. It was released the following year by Delmark Records titled No Border Blues. P-Vine Records released it in Japan under the Japanese title ブルースに国境はない which is a direct translation of the original.

In 2021, P-Vine Records released Nacomi's best compilation album Onward And Upward containing three new songs. An original album The Nacometers followed from the label in 2023. The Nacometers is another band led by Nacomi apart from the Blues Temple. With this album, her sound is more towards American roots music.

Nacomi announced that Nacomi & The Blues Temple would break up in December of 2024 after 11 years since its formation. Pierre Ochiai, the guitarist of the band’s physical strength limitation was the reason given.

Active from the mid-40s, when she sang with the Al Smith band in Chicago, Tiny Topsy also made a number of well-received R&B records under her own name during the late 50s and early 60s. Among her recording sessions are some for Federal Records, from one of which came ‘Aw! Shucks, Baby’/‘Miss You So’, billed as by Tiny Topsy And The Five Chances, and which featured tenor saxophonist Ray Felder and vocal group the Charms.

Also for Federal she made ‘Come On, Come On, Come On’/‘Ring Around My Finger’, ‘Waterproof Eyes’/‘You Shocked Me’, ‘Western Rock’n Roll’/‘Cha Cha Sue’ and ‘Just A Little Bit’/‘Everybody Needs Some Loving’. Of these, ‘Just A Little Bit’ was later covered very successfully by several artists, including Rosco Gordon and Jerry Lee Lewis. She also released ‘After Marriage Blues’ and ‘Working On Me, Baby’, recorded in 1961 for Argo Records.

For some years ‘Tiny Topsy’ was believed to be a pseudonym used by singer-songwriter Bernice Williams (who wrote ‘Western Rock’n Roll’) although this is now largely discounted. Just who Tiny Topsy was remains unknown. /Biography by AllMusic

Born in Greensburg, IN, on June 9, 1949, singer and songwriter Billy C. Farlow grew up in Alabama, Indiana, and Texas, relocating to Detroit with his family in the early '60s. By this time he was already a proficient guitarist and harmonica player and began sitting in with the likes of John Lee Hooker, Sippie Wallace, and Big Joe Williams at various Detroit-area coffeehouses and blues clubs. He formed Billy C & the Sunshine in 1966 with pianist Boot Hamilton and guitarist Larry Welker and began working with legendary Butterfield Blues Band drummer Sam Lay. Soon Farlow was also sitting in regularly with Ann Arbor-based Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen, and when the band relocated to Berkeley, CA, in 1969, he officially joined the group and made the move with them.

The band recorded several albums with Paramount and Warner Brothers and had a major hit in 1972 with "Hot Rod Lincoln" before disbanding in 1976. Farlow stayed on in California and formed his own rockabilly and Western swing outfit with pianist Billy Philadelphia and guitarist Tommy Thompson. Farlow returned to Alabama and the South in the mid-'80s and began a long association with Nashville producer and guitarist Fred James, releasing five albums over the next dozen years for a variety of labels. In the early '90s he reunited with Sam Lay for a trio of albums. Good Blues Rock comes from all corners of the world. It’s what’s so remarkable and universal about the Blues and its many sub genres. Case in point Nacho Salmeron. Hailing from Jerez de la Frontera in southern Spain, a town known for Flamenco music, Nacho gives us in his 3rd solo release Blues Therapy a take on the Blues that is as much influenced by Steely Dan as it is Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Nacho Salmeron is a talented guitarist with liquid chops and a pension for writing clever slightly out of the box Blues riffs. Tunes like the instrumentals “Alf’s Line” (featuring Jesus Lavilla on organ) and “The African” have a 90’s Fusion Jazz vibe. Resplendent with synchronized full band turn around runs and flashy stabs of rhythm guitar playing all kinds of substitution chords. “Down for Good” achieves a push pull between strong riffing Blues and Aja informed smoothness.

Blues Therapy also Rocks, at times hard. “Lockdown Blues” seems to distill all Nacho’s COVID angst into a chugging ZZ Top meets Black Crows melt down. While the swaying lope of instrumental “Hey” crunchly marches. The chug of opener “Easy If You Try” and the uptown swing of instrumental “Blues For Jimmy” offer really well executed hard hitting traditional Blues.

Coming from the home of Flamenco it’s not surprising that Nacho has a tune called “Flamenco Dreams.” This instrumental dream is not much Flamenco but more Fusion Rock. With a slow burn, “Flamenco Dream” billows out with ever expanding sheets of guitar riffing. This highlight performance really shows Salmeron’s six string prowess.

Salmeron has a tight 4 piece band on Blues Therapy and the music is rewarded by the consistency. Alfonso Fernandez on bass, Ismael Colon on drums and Oscar Enrique Plazaola on keyboards support Nacho’s leadership well. It is because the band is so tight and flexible that the, at times, whiplash switches in styles work keeping Nacho’s singular guitar tone at the center. Nacho Salmeron was clearly using this record to wrestle with his feelings about the pandemic. It’s to his credit that his public Blues Therapy is an enjoyable and ultimately positive ride.

Bluesman B.B. King was no stranger to releasing live albums, during the 1960s and '70s. He released eight in that decade, among them, some of the most acclaimed records of his career, including Live at The Regal, Blues Is King, Live & Well, Live In Cook County Jail, and Live In Japan. In France: Live at the 1977 Nancy Jazz Pulsations Festival adds significantly to that list. The 14-track show appears as the second release from Zev Feldman's cooperatively owned Deep Digs label. The first was Sister Rosetta Tharpe Live in France. The tapes were sourced from Office de Radiodiffusion-Télévision Française (ORTF) and are in excellent sonic condition.

King played with a septet that included trumpeter Eddie Rowe and alto saxophonist Cato Walker III had been with him for several years as had guitarist Milton Hopkins. Organist James Toney joined King in 1968 and remained for decades, as did tenor saxophonist musical director and nephew Walter King. Bassist Joe Turner and drummer Calep Emphrey Jr. (he also played with Freddie and Albert King, the only musician to play with all three) were new additions to King's orchestra. These 14 tracks were sequenced and arranged expansively for the festival. They reveal themselves every bit as capable as previous backing band Sonny Freeman and the Kingpins. Arguably, this band is better. Evidence of their prowess can especially be heard on the three instrumental workouts in the program's second half - "I Need My Baby," "When I'm Wrong," and "Have Faith."

King throws a curveball after his introduction with a medley of Thelonious Monk's "Blue Monk" and Louis Jordan's "Caldonia," the latter an evergreen to the end. The orchestra's swing on the former tune is drenched in jazz-blues while the latter is jump blues/R&B barnstormer. With great breaks from both guitarists, honking saxophones, bright trumpets and unshakeable grooves from the rhythm section. Further, in his song choices, playing and especially sing, King drenches the concert in vintage soul reflecting the twin influences of Motown and Stax/Volt on his music during the 1970s. Check the version of "I Like to Live the Love" studio recorded in 1973 for To Know You Is to Love You, it glides, grooves, shakes and shimmies with infectious B-3 runs, bumping bass, and King's raw, resonant signing.

There's also a driving, blues funky version of that album's title track with burning horns and guitars. The reading of "The Thrill Is Gone" here surpasses the one found on Live In Cook County Jail. It starts loose, like a rehearsal version with King finding the bassline and walking slow and low in his opening solo. When he begins singing, the band falls in behind him, creating a platform for his voice. Later, "Sweet Sixteen" gives the audience a rightious taste of Chicago blues, while "To Know You Is to Love You" is a soul-blues choogler with jazzy horns, driving organ and bass and biting guitars in cut time. Though released for Record Store Day, In France: Live at the 1977 Nancy Jazz Pulsations Festival is destined to become one of the more cherished live albums on King's shelf. /Thom Jurek, AllMusic

Tomislav Goluban is a Croatian harp player. Crooked Eye Tommy is a west coast guitar player. So why not get together to create an album called Nashville Road? Goluban (which translates to Little Pigeon and is his nickname) was weaned on Slim Harpo and Sonny Terry, so it was only natural harmonica blues were in his future. And Ventura, California gave rise to Tommy and the sound of blues rock by him and his band. When Goluban heard them, he wanted to get together with them and they did. First in Croatia and then in the States, their music became intertwined and an album was just destined.

Recorded at Jasco’s Music Lab in Nashville, the album is all original music. Goluban wrote all but the final track which was penned by Crooked Eye Tommy Marsh. Anamarija Nekíc wrote the lyrics for “Life Is Good.” The Little Pigeon handles vocals on tracks 3 and 7 and harp throughout the album. Marsh is on vocals for five tracks and handles guitars, and on the first 8 cuts Eric Robert is on keys, Doug Selbert is on bass, and Alphonso Wesby is on drums. Jesse Duende is on guitar on the first four tracks, Bill Gillman is on upright bass for the final track and Grady Clark is on slide for that last cut, too.

“Hard Run” starts things off. Goluban gets some dirty harp going and Marsh lays out some good licks and the piano adds some cool boogie in there, too. Theres a rocking groove laid down to move things along as the group gets the ball rolling fast with a great opening instrumental. Next is “Rock Dog” with some slightly distorted harp and vocals. This one’s a mover and shaker with a driving beat and sold work by the back line. “Up Is Down” has some boogie woogie piano and gritty vocals. Lots of solo harp here in another driving song.

“Bad Choice Makes Good Sense” follows with a lesser, more thoughtful pace. Marsh sings emotively and Goluban adds a tasteful solo as does Marsh right after it. Then it’s “Hip Hop Shake” where the bass and drums get it rolling and Tommy’s guitar then lays out a boogie over them until the Little Pigeon’s harp comes in as the final layer. Some piano is then added before the harp takes charge and leads the instrumental onslaught. Harp and piano solo for us to savor; pretty cool stuff. “Hard Candy” features guitar and harp as Marsh sings about a woman who is hard candy. Piano tinkles, a little slide on the guitar neck for fun for a jumping slick track.

“Keep On Moving On” has more greasy harp, some nice organ helping out and Goluban’s gritty vocals. Up next is “Life Is Good” a slower paced number with Marsh singing and and Goluban responding on harp. Robert does a nice solo and then Marsh adds a good one of his own. Goluban takes us home on harp with a prolonged outro. “There Is A Train” completes the album with a 6 plus minute acoustic cut with lap steel added by Marsh for fun. Slow and cool, with the acoustic sounds, harp and steel guitar giving us a dirty and imaginative sound. /Steve Jones, Blues Blast Magazine

Amazingly, Bo Diddley's third album - containing classics such as "Cops and Robbers," "Run Diddley Daddy," and "Mona (I Need You Baby)" - has only been reissued on vinyl, and even that's out of print. More than one British Invasion band learned what they needed to know about American rock & roll from the songs on this record (the Stones cut "Cops and Robbers" at their earliest recording session, and later released a killer version of "Mona," though the most interesting British version of the latter was done by an all-girl band with an attitude called the Liverbirds).

This record is every bit as raunchy as Diddley's first two albums (the guitars may even be crunchier, and the singing shows more range), and has more than enough to recommend it to collectors and fans. This is the album that began the funny cover photos on Diddley's records. /Bruce Eder, AllMusic

British blues guitarist Mick Clarke began his career with Killing Floor, part of the British blues boom of the late 1960s and contemporaries of Free, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. The band backed Texas blues guitar star Freddie King and toured with legends Howlin' Wolf and Otis Spann. The album "Killing Floor" was later listed as one of Classic Rock Magazine's twenty top British blues albums of the time. In the 70s Mick's band SALT built a strong following in the UK, playing at the Reading Festival 1977 and opening for Muddy Waters in London.

The Mick Clarke Band was formed in the early 80s and has toured in the UK, Europe, USA and India, where Mick was the winner of the "best international act" from artistaloud.com. Mick has appeared on numerous festivals with artists including Joe Bonamassa, Johnny Winter and Rory Gallagher, and the Southern California Blues Society called him "One of the finest blues players to come out of England".

Pressed at R.T.I. on 180 Gram Vinyl! One of the Three Kings of blues guitar along with B.B. and Albert, Texas-born Freddy (Freddie) King influenced everyone from Eric Clapton and Peter Green in the UK to Jerry Garcia and Stevie Ray Vaughan in the States. But even his staying up all night playing poker with Grand Funk wasn’t enough to prevent his seminal King/Federal albums from staying out of print on vinyl for decades — until Sundazed came to the rescue. The reissue campaign that began with meticulously mastered editions of King classics Let’s Hide Away and Dance Away with Freddy King, Freddy King Gives You a Bonanza of Instrumentals, and Freddy King Goes Surfin’ continues with his rare 1963 offering, Bossa Nova and Blues. In the tradition of his surfing album, which wasn’t really surf, Bossa Nova and Blues had no bossa nova — but the advertising was at least half true, and hey, there were two cuts that had “bossa nova” in the title. Though King was best known for blues instrumentals, “Bossa Nova Blues” and “The Bossa Nova Watusi Twist” (dig the dance craze threesome) were actually the only two instrumentals on an album otherwise dedicated to bluesy ballads. But of course, Freddie made it work — churning out bonafide classics like the karmic “Someday, After A While (You’ll Be Sorry)” (later covered by John Mayall and the Blues Breakers on A Hard Road, also reissued on Sundazed mono CD/LP), the emotive “The Welfare (Turns Its Back on You),” the soulful “It Hurts to Be In Love,” and the more uptempo, New Orleans-flavored “You’re Barkin’ Up the Wrong Tree.”This Sundazed mono edition reproduces the original artwork and presents the original 12-song LP on 180 gram vinyl mastered from the original analog reels and pressed at Record Technology Inc.

The Nightlosers are a romanian ethno-blues band, mostly remarkable for their ability to find common roots between country-rock, American blues and Eastern Europe genuine folk, thus conveying the same message through complementary ways of expression. Their sound is chameleonic - to induce the rock/blues/ethno state of mind, the blend is a well-measured recipe with a bit of passion, a bit of subtle self-humor, a lot of technique in whatever device that produces some sort of sound, from overdriven guitar down to popular leaf ... and a good dose of temper.

Nikki Jones Band consists of Nikki Jones, Brandon Logan, Bruce Mackay. They made the band in October of 2017, when Nikki Jones was only 23. They then added their main drummer; George Robnett, in 2019 for the Journey To Memphis Competition to represent the Cascade Blues Association (CBA). They have competed twice since 2018. In October 2022, the group added Mr. Robert Cooley on bass.

The band has traveled all over Oregon and Washington, to the Canadian border for main Blues festivals, to making their first album “Battle me up”, and making the top 3 bands preforming at the Waterfront Portland Blues Festival in 2019 for the Journey To Memphis competition. Inspiring artists are Marcus King, Ray Charles, Danielle Nicole, Led Zeppelin, Sam Cook, Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin, Stevie Wonder, Allman Brothers, Eric, Clapton, B.B. The Fabulous Thunderbirds play an energized fusion of blues, rock & roll, and R&B that sounds like it came straight out of a Texas roadhouse. During their heyday in the early '80s, the band was one of the most popular attractions on the blues bar circuit, cutting no-frills albums like 1979's The Fabulous Thunderbirds and 1980's What's the Word. This eventually led to a breakthrough to the pop audience with their 1986 album Tuff Enuff. The mass success didn't last too long, and founding member Jimmie Vaughan left in 1990, but under the leadership of harmonica ace and vocalist Kim Wilson, the Fabulous Thunderbirds remained one of the most popular blues acts in America during the '90s and onward, occasionally making their way into the studio to cut albums like 2016's Strong Like That and 2024's Struck Down.

Guitarist Jimmie Vaughan formed the Fabulous Thunderbirds with vocalist/harpist Kim Wilson in 1974; in addition to Vaughan and Wilson, the band's original lineup included bassist Keith Ferguson and drummer Mike Buck. Initially, the group also featured vocalist Lou Ann Barton, but she left the band shortly after its formation. Within a few years, the Thunderbirds became the house band for the Austin club Antone's, where they would play regular sets and support touring blues musicians. By the end of the decade, they had built a strong fan base, which led to a record contract with the local Takoma Records.

In 1979, the Fabulous Thunderbirds released their eponymous debut on Takoma. The record was successful enough to attract the attention of major labels and Chrysalis signed the band the following year. What's the Word, the group's second album, was released in 1980 and it was followed in 1981 by Butt Rockin'. By the time the Thunderbirds recorded their 1982 album T-Bird Rhythm, drummer Mike Buck was replaced by Fran Christina, a former member of Roomful of Blues.

Although the Fabulous Thunderbirds had become favorites of fellow musicians -- they opened shows for the Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton -- and had been critically well-received, their records didn't sell particularly well. Chrysalis dropped the band following the release of T-Bird Rhythm, leaving the band without a record contract for four years. While they were in limbo, they continued to play concerts across the country. During this time, bassist Keith Ferguson left the band and was replaced by Preston Hubbard, another former member of Roomful of Blues. In 1985, they finally landed another record contract, signing with Epic/Associated.

After the deal with Epic/Associated was complete, the T-Birds entered a London studio and recorded their fifth album with producer Dave Edmunds. The resulting album, Tuff Enuff, was released in the spring of 1986 and, unexpectedly, became a major crossover success. The title track was released as a single and its accompanying video received heavy play on MTV, which helped the song reach the American Top Ten. The success of the single sent the album to number 13 on the charts; Tuff Enuff would eventually receive a platinum record. "Wrap It Up," a cover of an old Sam & Dave song, was the album's second single and it became a Top Ten album rock track. Later in 1986, the T-Birds won the W.C. Handy Award for best blues band.

The Fabulous Thunderbirds' follow-up to Tuff Enuff, Hot Number, arrived in the summer of 1987. Initially, the album did fairly well -- peaking at number 49 on the charts and spawning the Top Ten album rock hit "Stand Back" -- but it quickly fell off the charts. Furthermore, its slick, radio-ready sound alienated their hardcore following of blues fans. "Powerful Stuff," a single from the soundtrack of the Tom Cruise film Cocktail, became a number three album rock hit in the summer of 1988. It was included on the following year's Powerful Stuff album, which proved to be a major commercial disappointment -- it only spent seven weeks on the charts.

After the two poorly received follow-ups to Tuff Enuff, Jimmie Vaughan left the band to play in a duo with his brother, Stevie Ray Vaughan; following Stevie Ray's death in the summer of 1990, Jimmie pursued a full-time solo career. The Fabulous Thunderbirds replaced Vaughan with two guitarists, Duke Robillard and Kid Bangham. The first album from the new lineup, Walk That Walk, Talk That Talk, appeared in 1991. Following the release of Walk That Walk, Talk That Talk, Epic/Associated dropped the Fabulous Thunderbirds from their roster.

During the early '90s, the Fabulous Thunderbirds were in limbo, as Kim Wilson recorded a pair of solo albums -- Tigerman (1993) and That's Life (1994). Wilson re-assembled the band in late 1994 and the band recorded their ninth album, Roll of the Dice, which was released on Private Music in 1995. High Water followed in 1997 with a live album in 2001. (1997 also saw the death of original bassist Keith Ferguson at the age of 50.)

In 2004, Wilson reassembled the band yet again adding retro blues sensation guitarist Nick Curran and equally talented West Coast guitarist Kirk Eli Fletcher. The newly anointed group released Painted On, produced by Steve Berlin of Los Lobos, on Tone Cool records in 2005. It would be 2013 before the T-Birds issued their next studio album. On the Verge saw Wilson working with guitarists Johnny Moeller and Mike Keller, with Randy Bermudes on bass and Jay Moeller on drums. Wilson took his latest incarnation of the Thunderbirds -- Johnny Moeller on guitar, Kevin Anker on keyboards, Steve Gomes on bass, and Wes Watkins on drums -- back to the studio to make 2016's Strong Like That, which included additional guitar from Anson Funderburgh. Former bassist Preston Hubbard, who played with the group from 1985 to 1993, died on August 17, 2016, at the age of 63, and keyboardist Gene Taylor, who was in the band from 1993 to 2005, (and also recorded with Canned Heat and the Blasters), passed on February 20, 2021, at the age of 68. In June 2024, the Canadian Stony Plain label issued Struck Down; With Wilson and Johnny Moeller, this version of the Fabulous Thunderbirds featured Bob Welsh on keyboards, Steven Kirsty on bass, and Rudy Petschauer on drums. Struck Down also included a handful of guest stars, including Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, Bonnie Raitt, Elvin Bishop, Mick Fleetwood, and Taj Mahal.

Peter Green is a legend, hardly any British blues guitarist has influenced subsequent generations of guitarists with his subtle style like the founder of the Fleetwood Mac blues line-up. This includes Gregor Hilden, who since his debut album Guitar Deluxe (1994) now has an enormous back catalogue of his own albums. In addition to his own compositions, there is at least one adaptation of a Green title on each of his albums.
