By the end of their two week tour of India and Nepal in 2010, the newly named Katmandu Survivors had truly lived up to their new moniker and these songs tell the true story of their experience; "Welcome to Katmandu!"
A spinoff of Finland's most venerated and respected Blues outfit, The Wentus Blues Band, leader/bassist Robert Hagnas, assembled a four piece band for the short tour of India/Nepal with outstanding guitarist Kepa Harkonen, vocalist, Juho Kinaret and harpman/ Ollie Ontronen, both strong drummers who can capably switch duties at the drop of a hat.
The Finnish band connected with American Blues guitarist/vocalist, Sean Carney, who also made the ill fated tour, along with the Himalaya Blues Festival promoter and his assistant.
The five musicians connected on and off stage, even as the tour of India began to unravel, with four concert dates in India suddenly reduced to one. Fortunately, The Himalaya Blues Festival was a successful (if chilly) evening of international Blues. Magic happened on stage and Hagnas and Carney made a plan to reunite the band a year later for a tour in Finland.
It so happened the musicians had 2 days off and got together to write songs for a planned recording session. The band naturally drew on their experiences in India and Nepal for all of the original songs on this recording, honestly (sometimes brutally!) telling the story of their unforgettable time in "the sub continent."
Songs like, "Big in Nepal," "Delly Belly Blues," and ad "Immune To Your Love" push into hot blues rock territory, with lyrics inspired by Indian culture and the trip of a lifetime, while "Our Love," and "Chicken Tika Masala," dig interesting new ground. There's even a cover from The Rolling Stones to draw listeners into some familiar territory as the unfamiliar story unfolds.
With this recording you'll journey back thirteen years and thousands of miles to Katmandu, where an international musical collaboration to document the journey of a lifetime was born! "Welcome to Katmandu!" Strap in!

Not even the chaos of 2021 could throw Blues For A Cure off track and we are incredibly proud to present the thirteenth volume of our Studio Jam Series, bringing never before heard combinations of world-class musicians jamming together for the very special purpose of battling cancer.

Some exciting connections have occurred at and through Blues For A Cure. One of those magical encounters happened when Mark Puskarich introduced Scotty Bratcher to Bart Walker, ensuing a red hot jam that led to the formation of The Desert City Ramblers, and I’m pleased to report, this very recording! I’m happy that we were finally able to get Scotty Bratcher onto one of these sessions, especially considering the fact that he appeared at our second ever event back in 2009, alongside the immortal Hubert Sumlin.

Matt O’Ree and his band have also been around BFAC since our second ever recording session and it’s been a pleasure to hear their sound evolve over the decade we’ve been working together. The addition of stellar vocalist Eryn O’Ree continues to pay incredible dividends as she brings new life to the favorite “Leave Your Hat On," and she’ll certainly have plenty of imaginations working over time with this sultry reading. Matt’s amazing, unique and ultra soulful guitar work has caught the attention of people like Jon Bon Jovi as he continues to travel the country increasing his audience.

Ohio born and bred Noah Wotherspoon has been a brother in BFAC for nearly a decade as well and his IBC credentials placed him in a well deserved international spotlight that has continued to bring his sound to prestigious venues in Europe and the USA. A guitarist’s guitarist, Noah is a sensitive artist who always explores the less traveled routes to the heart and soul, and he takes the low and dirty road down south on “Going to Mississippi” and ultimately delivers us to the promised land!

I was so excited to be present at The Orpheum Theater in Memphis when Bart Walker and his band won The International Blues Challenge in 2012, and it was even more of a thrill for me to watch my friend on his regular gig, several years later, as guitarist for Hank Williams, Jr. in front of 10,000 people. Bart has used his new connections to secure signed instruments for BFAC from people like ‘Keb ‘Mo and Dolly Parton - Bart’s generosity is as immense as his stunning musical talent.

The pairing of Bart Walker and Scotty Bratcher is a blues rock one-two-punch full of electricity, dynamics, tension and release, and overall guitar artistry and their camaraderie inspires everyone on this session to not only play their very best, but to maybe even take some wild chances.

It was a long time coming and after several attempts, we were finally able to bring Nick Schnebelen back to Blues For A Cure. Trampled Under Foot swept the 2008 IBC and they were the core of the band on our first three volumes of this series, and eight years later Nick brings his super fine band, Adam Hagerman on drums and Cliff Moore on bass.

Lenny Paul returns with rock solid bass work that we’ve come to love and rely on, as well as a memorable original tune with an inspired vocal.

Tony’s Treasures, with producer Mark Puskarich and engineer Cody Romshak at the helm, has hosted this series for a decade now (with the first three volumes recorded at Central City in Columbus). The studio is a comfortable home away from home for all of us musicians who we’ve come to appreciate as a sort of “fantasy camp” where we can truly disconnect with the distractions of city life to immerse ourselves in the music in a first class recording studio with all of the modern comforts and the latest recording technology.

This is a exciting collaboration of blues musician Mr. Downchild and singer-songwriter Kasimira Vogel featuring Sean Carney.

Mr. Downchild is a singer, guitarist and harmonica player who has been a fixture on the U.S. blues scene for more than two and half decades. Born Stephen Brazier in South London in 1950, he learned to sing and dance from his mother, a singer and dancer, and his great aunt, an opera singer.

Kasimira, «Kassy» has been singing for as long as she can remember when her mother sent her to a voice coach at age 9. Her parents had a vast collection of albums that included Jazz, R & B, Folk and Blues that certainly influenced her greatly. By the time she was age 17, she had been on the theatre stage and graduated to studying music at The Dana School of Music. To her dismay, opera was the only option for vocalists. Secretly she went with friends in the Jazz program to the local Jazz clubs. When her voice teacher caught her performing at a downtown event, not singing opera, he confronted her saying «Miss Vogel, the reason I can not get from you the operatic qualities is because you are listening to that Jazz music.» Shortly after that she decided to make her own path and designed a degree thru the University for Musical Theater, the first of it's kind there. Always searching for great female artist for inspiration she soon discovered Etta James, Big Mama Thorton and Koko Taylor ergo discovering The Blues. Life has never been the same.

2010 marked year four of Blues For A Cure and our first event at the historic Lincoln Theatre in downtown Columbus. To celebrate that distinction, we welcomed Blues Music Award winner Duke Robillard and his wonderful band from Rhode Island as our headliners. I first saw Duke perform in Columbus in the early '90s at The Big Bear Rhythm & Food Festival, and he quickly became one of my very favorite guitarists – I’m not the only one.
We kept our International Blues Challenge tradition going by welcoming 2005 IBC/Albert King Award winner Jonn Richardson back from Houston, Texas (Jonn’s third year of BFAC!) and expanded upon the “international” theme with a very special appearance from Italian guitarist Enrico Crivellaro. We also decided to include Central Ohio blues legend guitarist/singer Ray Fuller who has been playing the blues in Columbus for well over 30 years. Duke Robillard was incredibly gracious and generous with his time, agreeing not only to hang out all weekend and join us in this recording session, but also to host a Blues Guitar Master Class at The Jazz Academy the next night.
Of course, Blues For A Cure isn’t all about the guitar, and this year we invited two outstanding harmonica players to participate. Young Chicago bluesman Omar Coleman (thanks to Honey Bee Records) has been a part of BFAC since the very beginning, and he’s not missed one yet. Although, this is the first time his schedule has permitted him to record with us. San Francisco based Phil Berkowitz also joined us with his swinging brand of harp work. Hammond B-3 organ boss Jon Eshelman performed with us for the first time, along with veteran drummers Louis Tsamous and Jan Roll. The bassists on this recording are The Sean Carney Band’s Steve Perakis and my dad, Larry Carney.
Our first two Blues Cures recording sessions took place at Central City Recording Studio in Columbus, but due to relocating the studio, we opted for Tony’s Treasures Recording Studio in Cadiz, Ohio. Mark and Cody have done an incredible job with Tony’s Treasures. The studio proved a relaxed and warm atmosphere, following the snowy drive from Columbus that nearly had us pulling the plug!
We went with a guitar “tag team” approach on most of the tunes, pairing guitarists in some masterful combinations on an incredibly varied set of material that ranges from lowdown to uptown and touches all of the bases between. With an abundance of vocalists on hand, this recording offers even more variation, allowing every one of our singers to take the microphone for at least one song, at times taking on a Johnny Otis style revue feeling that truly offers something for everyone.
I started writing these notes with the intention of highlighting a few inspirational moments, but was left with the conclusion that each and every track is magical in its own way. There were just too many moments to recall. I will, however, say that it was a true bucket list item for me to record with Duke Robillard! We selected an old Big Joe Turner classic, “Cherry Red,” as a tribute to our late, mutual friend Jimmy “T-99” Nelson. I also particularly enjoyed Ray Fuller and Omar Coleman going acoustic on Muddy’s “Whose Gonna Be Your Sweet Man When I’m Gone,” a one take thing of beauty that had all of the musicians in the studio on their feet! I’m sure you’ll have special moments of your own as you enjoy this recording. Make sure you search for us on YouTube and Facebook to find the videos of the recording session, so you can experience the songs as they were tracked.
Blues Cures Studio Jam Vol. 3 is an incredible addition to a recorded legacy that already includes such stalwarts as Jimmy Thackery, Henry Gray, Trampled Under Foot, J.P. Soars, “King Saxe” Gene Walker, Bill Stuve, Steve Gerard, Ricky Nye, Micah Kesselring, The Matt O’Ree Band and some of the players on this volume. The collective passion of these musicians, and all involved in this project to battle a dreaded disease, is what brought us together. That love is apparent in each and every one of these tracks. ~Sean Carney

It’s no accident that Sean Carney’s career has been arcing steadily upward. The Columbus, Ohio bluesman has it in his family genes, with jazz horn players in the previous two generations. He’s put in at least his share of work and dues laying the foundation as he enters his third decade as a pro. Onstage locally he mastered his craft backing a wide array of local and national R & B greats such as Christine Kittrell and Jimmy “T-99” Nelson and making it known that he was a skilled and tasteful guitarist and vocalist. In 1998 he recorded his debut CD Provisions (re-packaged in 2007 with the inclusion of Kittrell’s last recordings). He gained exposure and experience serving as vocalist Teeny Tucker’s musical director and co-writer. Offstage he was a tireless advocate for those same artists, the blues and jump they represented and the area’s musical heritage, writing articles, being a dj, promoting concerts and serving three terms as President of the Columbus Blues Alliance.

Sean’s profile has gotten a major boost in the last five busy years, and in fact is decidedly international these days when European tours often in the company of major historical figures have become almost routine for him. Drummer Eric Blume, who performed with Sean for over a decade, and Sean founded Nite Owlz Records in 2006 and issued Sean’s CD Life Of Ease. It was a welcome surprise and a triumph of substance when The Sean Carney Band won the Albert King Best Guitarist and took first place at the 2007 International Blues Challenge in Memphis. Opportunities and touring increased dramatically. His 2007 and 2008 Blues For A Cure shows and CDs raised over $50,000 for the cause. In 2009 his 2007 Canadian recording Live Blues On Whyte was released. He has performed worldwide with Big Joe Duskin, Duke Robillard, Charlie Baty, Columbus standby Willie Pooch, Hank Marr, Joe Weaver, Johnnie Bassett, “King Saxe” Gene Walker, Sir Mack Rice and Hal Singer as well as his own group. As his visibility has grown, so has the growing realization that Sean is a noteworthy, sophisticated master of tone and taste with a broad appreciation for the music before him and around him and a knack for turning out interesting songs. His discography has shown a solid, well-considered approach and, as he puts it, “solid songs and tight arrangements.” And his reputation as a talent, a respecter of tradition and a humble and gracious person has become deservedly widespread.

With recent studio recordings with Duke Robillard and Jimmy Thackery, Sean Carney reaffirms his importance and value as a part of the blues scene he has supported so tirelessly for so long. It’s extra easy to root for him because of all the good he’s done and the road he’s taken. But even someone who knows nothing about him is bound to take notice of this grounded, savvy and rewarding musical affirmation of so many great things about Sean Carney and the blues. ~Dick Shurman

In early February 2007, the Sean Carney Band captured the title at The Blues Foundation’s International Blues Challenge, with Sean also being named the Albert King Most Promising Guitarist of the event, too. It was Carney’s third trip to the IBC, having twice landed third place with the Teeny Tucker Band. Barely two weeks after the competition in Memphis, Sean and drummer Eric Blume were already in Canada performing a couple nights in Calgary first and then as a featured act for a week at Edmonton’s Blues On Whyte.

During their trip to Canada, Sean and Eric hooked up with keyboard player Graham Guest and bassist Chris Brzezicki, recording their shows in Edmonton now available on disc as Live Blues On Whyte. The performances captured are nice examples of the same energetic, passionate display presented at the IBC, with outstanding solos delivered by each of the musicians.

For those familiar with Carney’s repertoire the selections included on this live recording are staples of his shows. Original numbers such as “Life Of Ease,” “All These Worries” and “Bad Side Baby” clearly show Carney’s adeptness at songwriting, and the eight-plus-minute opus “What Can I Say” offers Sean’s sensational guitar licks intermixed with Guest’s driving piano. There are also outstanding offerings of covers by artists such as Jimmy Witherspoon and Willie Dixon that only add extra fuel to the fire behind these live takes.

Though this disc may have been recorded two years ago, it does nothing to belie the exceptional live performance musicians that both Sean Carney and Eric Blume (the heartbeat of the band) are every time they step onto a stage. Always an act that is worth making the extra effort to witness, even if it means driving a little further than normal and this new live release is one that should receive extended time on your players as well. IBC winners for certain, but Live Blues On Whyte proves that they are champions every night out! Add this one to your must-buy list.

A Columbus, Ohio native and veteran of the scene, like Carney, drummer Eric Blume has been performing with Carney in Columbus venues for over a decade, backing blues and R&B artists Christine Kittrell, Hank Marr, Jimmy “T-99” Nelson, Willie Pooch, Big Joe Duskin, Joe Weaver and Johnnie Bassett. In his early twenties, Carney’s passion for the Blues extended beyond the stage as he bolstered the scene in his hometown, organizing concerts featuring the likes of Jimmy Witherspoon and Charles Brown, writing blues-related articles, co-hosting a radio program called Spontaneous Combustion on WCBE 90.5 FM, organizing fundraisers for ailing artists and serving three terms as President of The Columbus Blues Alliance. When Hubert Sumlin and Henry Gray were recently in need of a backing band at The Soul Shine Blues Festival in Bascom, Ohio, organizers knew to look no further than The Sean Carney Band for professionalism and musicianship. Producer/guitarist Scott Cable also selected The SCB as backing band band for pioneering R&B vocalist Nappy Brown for a number of 2008 festival dates - unfortunately, it was not to be as the blues world recently lost Mr. Brown following a lengthy illness.

“Provisions - A Second Helping,” features the original CD re-mastered with three bonus tracks also recorded in 1997 with the same lineup that featured local luminaries John Popovich, David West, Edwin Bayard and Columbus’ Jazz Ambassador Gene Walker.

“Provisions – A Second Helping,” features the late Nashville R&B Queen, Christine Kittrell performing her final studio recording, “True Love Untold.” , her own composition. Kittrell, who passed away in Columbus in 2002, was a key figure of the Nashville R&B scene of the 1950’s and was recently featured in a major exhibit at The Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, Tennessee.
In addition, Willie Pooch, guitarist Ray Fuller and pianist Tommy Thomas, a veteran of the 1950’s Harlem music scene, guest on the CD.

“Carney possesses a working knowledge of T-Bone Walker’s music – its intricacies and dynamics – rivaling that of masters twice his age. I admire him sticking to his guns and being recognized on his own terms for the music he so obviously loves and respects… A strong recording for those blues aficionados who appreciate respectful detail to the way things used to (and still should) be.” – Vintage Guitar Magazine

“Like something from a hip time capsule. Excellent song selections help make Provisions top notch: Carney’s vocals are happening and guest shots from Willie Pooch and Christine Kittrell are something special. This band has it goin’ on!” – Blues Revue Magazine

“This set of tunes is hot and simmerin’. The cuts run the gamut from Lowell Fulson and Elmore James through Ike Turner’s Matchbox, and J.B. Lenior’s, I’ll Die Tryin’, and Johnny “Guitar” Watson’s, Oh Baby, follow in suit to give this disc that uppity, jumpin’ stylization. Carney’s guitar, the excellent horn arrangements and the chosen material push the jazzy, revue-like nature of the music. Good hoppin’ tunes with a swingin’ execution… not a bad tune on this biscuit!” - Big City Blues
