One of the four Neville Brothers, Cyril Neville was the youngest, born on January 10, 1948, in New Orleans, LA. Cyril picked up his love of music from his parents and his older brothers at an early age, but it wasn't until 1967 (at the age of 19) that Cyril began singing professionally, as he united with brothers Art and Aaron in the outfit Art Neville and the Neville Sounds, playing the New Orleans club circuit on a regular basis. Cyril and Aaron eventually left the group, forming another outfit, Soul Machine, shortly thereafter. 1970 saw the release of Cyril's debut solo single, "Gossip" b/w "Tell Me What's On Your Mind," which included backing music by brother Art's new outfit, the Meters. Soul Machine relocated to Nashville, then New York, but both moves failed to help put the group over the top. It just so happened at this time that the Meters were looking to expand their lineup, and asked Cyril to join in on vocals and congas -- contributing to such albums as 1972's Cabbage Alley and 1975's Fire on the Bayou, while the Meters opened up for the Rolling Stones during a sold-out 1974 U.S. tour.

Just as the Meters splintered in 1976, Cyril became enraptured with reggae music (thanks to Bob Marley's landmark Natty Dread album), as all four Neville siblings formed the Neville Brothers group, issuing numerous subsequent recordings. In addition to his work with the Neville Brothers, Cyril has formed other bands over the years, including the Endangered Species Band in 1983 and the Uptown Allstars Band, while he also found time to launch his own record label, Endangered Species. Cyril also founded the New Orleans Musicians Organized (NOMO), which helps musicians who need business advice with their careers. Cyril Neville has issued several solo albums on his own over the years, including 1995's The Fire This Time, and a pair in 2000, New Orleans Cookin' and Soulo. Plus he has guested on various other artist's recordings over the years, including albums by Edie Brickell, Jimmy Buffett, Dr. John, Bob Dylan, Daniel Lanois, and Willie Nelson, among others. ~Greg Prato

The theme of friendship has carried Mitch Woods along through his career and has led him to this, his current duets and trios project…. Friends Along The Way. Featuring Guests: Van Morrison, Taj Mahal, Elvin Bishop, Charlie Musselwhite, Ruthie Foster, Joe Louis Walker, Maria Muldaur, Cyril Neville, Marcia Ball, John Hammond, Kenny Neal, James Cotton, John Lee Hooker and more… Mitch Woods has delivered a career spanning tour de force. What you hear on these songs is a simple duo or trio of musicians each expressing their innermost feelings and emotions through their instrument….the voice, piano, guitar, harmonica, tambourine…anything that can communicate the feelings, the rhythms of life to the audience. Friends Along The Way finds Mitch reaching into his historical sense of music. He reaches backwards to the roots rather than forward for his inspiration. This shines through on the first single “Take This Hammer” featuring a stunning vocal performance from Van Morrison and backed on guitar by Taj Mahal and of course Mitch Woods on piano. With Friends Along The Way, Mitch wanted to get a chance to play with some of his contemporaries in an intimate and mostly unplugged environment. The piano as an instrument lends itself to this format so perfectly. Mitch can play rhythm, lead, bass, and sing while accompanying some of his friends, who happen to be today’s blues and musical greats. It is a great instrument for bringing out the best of these awesome artists who are keeping the blues flame burning for generations to come. Some say music is a gift. It is a gift, not only to the person who performs it but to the world. The musicians you hear in these songs have spent a lifetime doing what they love to do….play music. Enjoy…this album is Mitch Wood’s gift to you.

On Saturday, May 3, 2014, a group of esteemed musicians and friends joined together for “The Musical Mojo of Dr. John: A Celebration of Mac & His Music” a special concert event taping that honored this musical icon. The star-studded concert took place at New Orleans’ Saenger Theatre, with Dr. John joined by a stunningly diverse assortment of notable guest artists, who perform 22 songs written, recorded and/or popularized by Dr. John during his prolific six-decade career, honoring his large and still-growing musical legacy.

“It was very moving to have all these people paying tribute to me, but I just treated it like it was another show,” Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and six-time GRAMMY®-winner Dr. John says of The Musical Mojo of Dr. John: A Celebration of Mac & His Music.

The performers include Bruce Springsteen, who duets with Dr. John on the 1973 smash “Right Place Wrong Time”; Jason Isbell, who delivers a heartfelt “Blow Wind Blow”; John Fogerty, who performs the raucous Crescent City anthem “New Orleans”; Mavis Staples, who brings gospel fervor to “Lay My Burden Down”; Widespread Panic, who lend musical muscle to “Familiar Reality”; and Ryan Bingham, who delivers a haunting “Back by the River.”

Fittingly, The Musical Mojo of Dr. John also features memorable performances by several New Orleans legends, including Allen Toussaint, Irma Thomas, Terence Blanchard, John Boutté, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, George Porter Jr. and Zigaboo Modeliste of the Meters, and Aaron, Charles and Cyril Neville. Bassist Don Was served as the project’s musical director, leading an all-star house band that also included Allman Brothers Band/Rolling Stones keyboardist Chuck Leavell, renowned NOLA pianist John Gros, Funky Meters guitarist Brian Stoltz and journeyman drummer Kenny Aronoff, as well as Dr. John’s longstanding musical compatriot, trombonist Sarah Morrow.

Being the youngest of the Neville Brothers would never prevent Cyril Neville from being the person he is, carrying on in the tradition of his more famous siblings. In fact, he not only embellishes on the historic New Orleans sound, he adds a little spice, psychedelic rock & roll, and deep blues. Cyril Neville may be a less rough-edged singer than his elders, not to the extent of senior Aaron Neville, but he is more instrumentally inclined as he dishes out roots/party-style piano on this feel-good compilation from his small discography for the M.C. label. Of course there are many gems, like the finger-poppin' bass-driven tribute to Professor Longhair, "Tipitina"; the pure pop "New Orleans Cookin'"; and the famous "Fortune Teller," a live ballad talking about "heroes and sheroes," penned by Naomi Neville, the alias of Allen Toussaint. A hard funk version of "Foxy Lady" scorches the earth instrumentally, but Neville takes it much slower vocally, while Bob Dylan's "The Times They Are A-Changin'" is done as a gospel soul tune. The remainder of the material is typical Neville, ranging from Latin plus funk to shuffle, a Native American Indian tribute, choral, commercial dance music à la disco, and even multi-layered rap ("Projects") and smooth jazz before the disc ends. The first number, "The Blues Is Here to Stay," might throw you off in its individual get-down blues, a lyric reference to Elmore James, and Taj Mahal's cameo appearance on harmonica. Certainly Cyril Neville has his pick of the litter as sidemen, including Toussaint, the Soul Rebels Brass Band, Marva Wright, Big Chief Iron Horse, saxophonist Tim Green, and no less than six fellow Nevilles. You'd be hard-pressed to find a better short stack of recognizable numbers or surprises from this first family of Crescent City icons, led by the least-known but well-reared one of the bunch. ~Michael G. The date is October 24th, 2012. The place is the Crossroads Festival in Bonn, Germany. And the vibe is pure electricity, as modern rock’s musical dream-team tear it up for the legendary Rockpalast TV show. It’s surely no coincidence that the Royal Southern Brotherhood kick off their set that night with Fired Up! In the words of that song’s chorus, Devon Allman, Cyril Neville, Mike Zito, Charlie Wooton and Yonrico Scott are undoubtedly “fired up and ready to go”…

Released in November 2013, this new CD takes listeners along for the ride, fusing a blistering Brotherhood set with the pin-sharp sound and production values you’ve come to expect from Ruf Records’ celebrated Songs From The Road series. Past releases have included everyone from Jeff Healey to Luther Allison – and now the spotlight turns on the southern supergroup who have lit up the post-millennial scene. It’s hard to imagine a band more deserving of the live-album treatment. If there was chemistry afoot when the five members first convened in New Orleans over the summer of 2010, then it’s only been strengthened by the self-titled debut album that followed in 2012, and the subsequent world tour that has seen RSB raise the roof across twenty-plus countries. “We’ve got to see the world with this band,” says Devon, “and I love it.” Given that intensive bonding session, it follows that Songs From The Road finds the collective at the peak of their powers, trading on the kind of chemistry that can only be forged through miles on the clock. Devon drips molten soul from his Gibson Les Paul. Behind the congas, Cyril is a groove in human form. Mike strokes and scorches the frets, while Charlie and Yonrico are a rhythm section locked down to the point of telepathy. “We have fun and we play as hard as we can,” says Mike of the band’s high standards onstage. “If you’re not there, you better get there… or we’re gonna knock you over!”

The unofficial sixth member that night in Germany, of course, was the Crossroads crowd, still pinching themselves at getting up close and personal with this A-list band in such intimate surroundings. “It was such a beautiful evening,” says Mike of the vibe in the house, “with an amazing audience that really got into the music. They lifted the band up and made us feel good. It was such an honour to perform for Rockpalast.”
