J.J. Milteau gathers around him some talented accomplices, Michael Robinson, Mike Andersen, Harrison Kennedy, Carlton Moody, under the guidance of Johan Dalgaard to surf on a soundtrack soaked in blues and all the music he has been programming for over twenty years in his show “Bon Temps Rouler”.

“My whole life has been determined by buying my first harmonica when I was fifteen. For me, it truly was The Key To The Highway. Whether it’s Little Walter’s version in 1958, the one, captured on the fly, by Clapton and Duane Allman in 1970, or the one wrongly considered the original by Big Bill Broonzy and Jazz Gillum, the song “Key to the Highway” is undoubtedly considered a classic, even an anthem! Studies on the Blues tend to demonstrate that the lyrics are often to be taken with a grain of salt.

But here we are squarely facing the obvious: the common aspiration for each individual to break free from their circumstances and find a personal and rewarding path. Even though I never thought that the humble “lip destroyer” would serve such a purpose, I must honestly acknowledge that all the encounters that have shaped my life have occurred more or less directly thanks to the Marine Band 1896/20. The little harmonica has been for me, The Key to the Highway.”

Personnel: JJ Milteau (harmonica); Mike Andersen (vocals tracks 1,6); Harrison Kennedy (vocals tracks 2,8); Carlton Moody (vocals tracks 4,7,10); Michael Robinson (vocals tracks 3,5,9); Johan Daalgard (keyboards, percussion); Raphael Chassin (drums, percussion tracks 7,10); David Donatien (congas, percussion); Toma Milteau (drums, percussion track 4); Laurent Vernerey (upright bass).

French bluesman Jean Jacques Milteau delivers an earthy tribute to a city steeped in the "tradition" on Memphis. Recorded at Royal Studio in the city in question, Memphis features Milteau's muscular harmonica along with such blues luminaries as Mighty Mo Rodgers, Little Milton, and Mighty Sam McClain. Whining and growling through such stellar original tunes as the second-line funk of "Bon Ton Café" and the driving Motown-sounding title track, the real revelation here is how Milteau and company reinterpret pop tunes as blues. Rodgers turns Neil Young's "Heart of Gold" into a rustic and soulful plea, while Milton gives Sting's "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free" an ominous edge. This is mainstream blues at its best. /Matt Collar, AllMusic

J.J. Milteau is France's leading blues harmonica player and "Live, Hot N' Blue" is his follow up to the highly praised "Fragile" album released earlier this year.

Recorded live at several venues across France in 2005, J.J. and his two regular group members are joined by a venerable crew of American musicians who have been favourites on the French blues circuit for some time: bassist Felton Crews (Miles Davis, Junior Wells and Otis Rush), drummer Mark Mack (James Cotton), and singer-guitarist Andrew "Junior Boy" Jones, a Texan who'd learned his trade alongside the great Freddie King.

"I've always been fascinated by the way great bluesmen mastered time. For this album I wanted a rhythm section and soloists with different horizons, so we could share this time-notion coming from different cultures." (JJ Milteau) /Amazon

Jean-Jacques Milteau - Blowin' In The Past (2-Disc Set)

Le Chant du Monde decided to reissue the recordings I made for them between 1973 and 1983. 4 LPs (2 CDs)! I won’t comment the musical quality but it reminded me a lot of souvenirs, good ones and great encounters too. Note: The second Cd contains mostly blues recordings.

Jean-Jacques Milteau has travelled many different roads in both the geographical and musical sense of the term. From China to South Africa, from Nashville to New Orleans, or Ireland to Mexico, he is a musician whose curiosity knows no limits ; he’s forever searching for new encounters, open to others, ready for every new musical experience that might cross his path.

Lead Belly could have improved the slogan of France—a country he visited shortly before his death—in such a way. For lack of true equality between the poor, illiterate Black individual that he was and the fluctuating entourage drawn by his talent over the years, he fought his whole life for dignity as a human being and, even more so, as an artist. Liberty probably was young Lead Belly’s original aspiration, as he toiled in the segregated South of the turn of the 20th Century. No doubt, the murderous fights that led to his incarceration on several occasions were the result of his injured dignity. Endowed with an uncommon talent, he generated around his person a sense of fraternity that awarded him the protective help of the Lomaxes, favored artistic collaborations with Pete Seeger and other liberals in the 1940’s, aroused the empathy of the young audiences he loved to entertain. Dignity stands out in this humanistic trilogy as Lead Belly’s number one goal: the dignity of being considered an artist first and foremost, regardless of the color of his skin or his judicial past. His repertoire reflects his gift as a storyteller and entertainer ; it also reveals his need to testify. The depth of human feelings and sufferings, religion, social life, anecdotes… it seems his musical chronicles encompassed all topics. As is clear when listening to his live recordings, Lead Belly was wont to comment the tunes he sang, much like a journalist. Yet his main claim to fame is linked to his personal power and conviction as an interpreter. No one is left unscathed by Lead Belly’s voice, by the sound of his guitar, both distant and familiar. Only great artists showcase such timelessness while chronicling their times. Working with Eric on this project has been a real treat. Each and every song came to us in a natural and spontaneous way. The majority of titles present on this album were recorded live, with or without an audience, in order to preserve this freshness. A thousand thanks to Philippe Langlois for providing the original idea and bringing us together, I’m looking forward to more stage performances around this project. ~J.J. Milteau
