Alberto Colombo is a Italian guitar player from Milan. Our first meeting was during the ‘StreetFest’ in Toronto, Canada. Colombo was playing there together with David Rotundo and stood out thanks to his intriguous look, nice guitar and good playing. A couple of months later Colombo sent his first solo record and after having heard it a couple of times, I have to say it’s a very nice record that’s worth listening to.
This blues guitar player is influenced by many artists, like BB King, Albert King, Freddie King, Albert Collins, Charlie Christian, T-bone Walker, Tiny Grimes, Wes Montgomery, Kenny Burrell, Duke Robillard and Ronnie Earl. Not a bad collection of artists. However, his inspiration also comes from regions and countries in this world.
All these influences are packed together on ‘Never Look Back’. Hasta Luego Cabron is a very nice and happy instrumental song that contains some clear Latin and Mexican sounds. Together with Octopus Jump Again, Never Look Back and La Bruja y La Luna, this is my personal favourite and one of the highlights of the record. It’s no coincidence that all these songs are instrumental, a genre that I really like.
The record contains twelve songs and has a duration of 51 minutes. Thanks to the variation and the number of music styles on it, this record never becomes dull. All songs are written by Colombo. On a couple he’s accompanied by Jumpin’ J. Sansone and Lynwood Slim, who are both doing the vocals. The drums are played by Gio Rossi and Roberto Stefani.
There’s also Luca Tonani on bass, Walter Tosin on upright bass, Fabio Buonarrotaon trumpet and Walter Calafiore on tenor and bariton sax. Not only fashionable Italian names, but also very good musicians. Next to the blues, you can hear rock ’n roll, jazz, soul and latin on ‘Never Look Back’, and it’s a record worth recommending to everyone.
