Art: Full

09. Classical Christmas (2:09)

Lynyrd Skynyrd: Johnny Van Zant (vocals); Rickey Medlocke, Hughie Thompson (acoustic, electric & slide guitars, background vocals); Gary Rossington (acoustic, electric & slide guitars); Billy Powell (keyboards); Leon Wilkeson (bass); Kenny Arnoff (drums); Dale-Krantz Rossington, Carol Chase (background vocals).
Additional personnel includes: Charlie Daniels (vocals, guitar); .38 Special.

Recorded at The Castle, Franklin, Tennessee.

A Southern rock Christmas album? Hey, it makes as much sense as Run-DMC's "Christmas in Hollis," and the good news is that the Lynyrd Skynyrd boys--along with special guests the Charlie Daniels Band and .38 Special--truly get into the spirit with a nice mix of seasonal standards (rock and otherwise) and originals. Among the latter, the Daniels Band provides a frankly terrifying "Devil Went Down to Georgia"-derived take on "Santa Claus is Coming to Town," while Skynyrd crunch through Chuck Berry's "Run, Rudolph Run" with Stones-like aplomb. On the originals front, .38 Special score big with "Mama's Song," a Southern rock power pop hybrid in their best '80s style, although it must be said that these self-proclaimed wild-eyed Southern boys have a sentimental streak a mile wide (and when their song is followed by Skynyrd's near-obscene "Santa Claus Wants Some Lovin'," it's a tad disconcertin'...). In any case, the album concludes, nicely, with a little harmonizing by the entire Skynyrd family (kids, relatives, road crew, dogs, etc). Fun stuff. ~AMG

Lynyrd Skynyrd: Last of the Street Survivors Farewell Tour Lyve! was recorded at the band’s hometown performance in Jacksonville, Florida, on September 2nd, 2018.

Ahead of the 17-track album’s release on November 1st, the group previews the set with a video of “What’s Your Name” filmed onstage at TIAA Bank Field.

Opening with the famous riff from guitarists Gary Rossington and Rickey Medlocke, the performance finds singer Johnny Van Zant (who took over lead vocal duties after his brother Ronnie Van Zant and two other band members died in a 1977 plane crash) mugging for the cameras and acknowledging his audience with finger points and cheers. But Skynyrd will always be a guitar-focused band, and the interplay between Rossington, who underwent heart surgery in August necessitating the postponement of two shows on the tour, and Medlocke is particularly electrifying in front of a home audience.

The horrific 1977 plane crash that wiped out members of Lynyrd Skynyrd and their entourage, including the man who had led the group across the best part of a decade, the inimitable Ronnie Van Zandt, was at the time seen as the end of the group. Other members had been seriously injured in the tragedy and having only weeks before released what turned out to be the ironically title Street Survivors album, this album was seen as a fitting swansong and the group disbanded. Those surviving members reunited only once to perform an instrumental 'Free Bird' at Charlie Daniels' charity event Volunteer Jam V in 1979, otherwise the group went on hiatus for the next 10 years, with four ex-members performing and recording as the Rossington-Collins band between 1980 and 1983, choosing a female lead vocalist to avoid claims that they were merely a rebooted Skynyrd. through this period. In 1987 however, Lynyrd Skynyrd reunited for a full-scale tour with five major members of the pre-crash band; survivors Gary Rossington, Billy Powell, Leon Wilkeson and Artimus Pyle, along with guitarist Ed King - who had left the band two years before the crash - and with Ronnie Van Zant's younger brother, Johnny, taking over on lead vocals and as primary songwriter. Due to Allen Collins' paralysis from a 1986 car accident, he was only able to participate as the musical director, choosing Randall Hal as his stand-in. As part of his plea deal, Collins would be wheeled out onstage each night to explain to the audience why he could no longer perform. The reunited band was meant to be a one-time tribute to the original lineup, captured on the double-live album Southern by the Grace of God: Lynyrd Skynyrd Tribute Tour 1987. The fact that the band chose to continue after the '87 caused legal problems for the survivors, as Judy Van Zant and Teresa Gaines (widows of Ronnie and Steve, respectively) sued the others for violating an agreement made shortly after the plane crash stating that they would not exploit the Skynyrd name for profit. The new line up however were back on the road in 1994 and, with the exception of Pyle, all original reunion members were in place, along with Mike Estes on guitar and Owen Hale on drums. The show presented on this CD was performed at The Lakewood in Atlanta, Georgia, on August 24th, when the band performed a dynamic set featuring many LS classics alongside a superb new composition in 'Devil In The Bottle,' which has gone on to become a live favourite.

Lynyrd Skynyrd is an American rock band best known for popularizing the southern hard-rock genre during the 1970s. Originally formed in 1964 as the The Noble Five in Jacksonville, Florida, the band rose to worldwide recognition on the basis of its driving live performances and signature tunes "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird". At the peak of their success, three members died in an airplane crash in 1977, putting an abrupt end to the band's most popular incarnation. Lynyrd Skynyrd was the definitive Southern rock band, fusing the overdriven power of blues-rock with a rebellious Southern image and a hard rock swagger.

This concert was performed in at the Capitol Theatre, Cardiff in 1975 and features some of their greatest hits, from their first three albums.
