Meena first played in a band when she was fifteen. She developed into a wanderlust type and studied in Africa, the United States and Vienna, among other places. In the US, Chicago stole her heart for its atmosphere and blues music. Because of her temperament and good voice, several people wanted to make her a second Tina Turner or Janis Joplin, but when Thomas Ruf came across her it was the blues that would determine her life. On the CD 'Try Me' we hear a singer with a beautiful, sometimes somewhat melancholy voice. Most of the songs have a calm and compelling tempo. The title song is a good example of this. There are also several beautiful guitar solos on this CD by Coco Montoya, Eric Sardinas, Joanne Shaw Taylor, Erja Lyytinen and Chris Fillmore. These kind of solos are always very pleasant to listen to and never get boring. A well-known cover on this disc is 'I'd Rather Go Blind'. It may not be the most beautiful version I know of this song, but this version is very beautiful and penetrating. 'Try me' is a CD that is more than worth listening to.

Eric Sardinas - Devil's Train

Source: CD
Size: 122,2 MB
Time: 52:17
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2001

Art: Full

01. Piece Of Me (3:04)
02. My Sweet Time (4:13)
03. Texola (3:35)
04. Aggravatin' Papa (3:54)
05. Killin' Time Blues (4:24)
06. My Kind Of Woman (4:36)

11. Be Your Man (3:26)
12. Sidewinder (5:48)
13. 8 Goin' South (4:01)

Sardinas led a trio through a high-energy set of rocky roadhouse blues-rock on his second album. Given how tired the format sounds after being exploited by innumerable performers for many years, and also how much better the best of such practitioners are at the format, it's questionable whether another entry in this overcrowded field was unnecessary. Sardinas' skills as a technically accomplished, if somewhat bombastic and unimaginative, blues guitarist are undoubted. His hoarse, blustery vocals are another matter, as is the over-the-top macho posturing of his original songs. It's better when, as the cliché goes, he just shuts up and plays his guitar, as on the instrumental "Texola," or when he tones down the throaty strain of his vocals at least a little, as on the uncharacteristically laid-back closer, "8 Goin' South." Perhaps fans of George Thorogood looking for something in a more headbanging vein may dig this, but here's voting that Sardinas is more properly placed as a sideman than a frontman. He duets with Mississippi bluesman David "Honeyboy" Edwards, incidentally, on "Gambling Man Blues." ~Richie Unterberger

Pinetop Perkins & Friends - Pinetorp Perkins & Friends

Year: 2008
Bitrate: MP3@320K/s
Time: 41:30
Size: 96,1 MB
Styles: Chicago blues, piano blues
Scans: Full

1. Take It Easy Baby (3:12)
2. Got My Mojo Working (3:30)
3. Down In Mississippi (3:56)
4. How Long Blues/Come Back Baby (5:23)
5. Hoochie Coochie Man (4:10)
6. Barefootin' (3:06)
7. Look On Yonders Wall (4:29)
8. Anna Lee (4:28)
9. Sweet Home Chicago (3:49)
10. Bad Luck Baby (5:23)

These superstar guest "friends" affairs can get awfully tiresome, but this one is better than most. It was recorded over a two and a half year period when the irrepressible Chicago blues and boogie pianist was 92-94 years old, yet he seems decades younger. The songs are generally Chicago blues standards such as "Got My Mojo Working," "Hoochie Coochie Man," "Look on Yonders Wall" and, Lord help us, "Sweet Home Chicago."

Still, if anyone has earned the right to give these chestnuts another go-round it's Perkins. Even though he's played nearly all of them thousands of times, he's as enthusiastic and invigorated as if he'd just written these well-worn classics. The piano man is spry on the 88s, tinkling the ivories like he's half his age, especially on the jaunty "Take it Easy Baby," the lively opener. Even though producer Doug B. Nelson overdubbed many of the higher profile parts, the set sounds open and natural, avoiding the stiffness that usually results with projects such as this.

Only Eric Clapton, Jimmie Vaughan, and B.B. King can be considered major stars with the rest of the "friends" lesser known blues stalwarts such as singer Nora Jean Brusco and bassist Willie Kent (Kent passed before this disc was finally released in June, 2008). Thankfully Perkins is in such bracing form that except for King, who trades quips with him on "Down in Mississippi," nobody overwhelms or even steals the spotlight from the album's star.

On the slow blues "Anna Lee," Perkins sounds positively lascivious, but in a charming, non-threatening way. He's also inspired by "Hoochie Coochie Man," with Vaughan assisting, laughing at the end like a child. Hotshot slide guitarist Eric Sardinas redeems himself for his own over the top albums with zippy work here on "Barefootin'" and especially "Mojo..." Pinetop is so loose, upbeat, and cheerful for these sessions, you'd think he had another 94 years left in him. /Hal Horowitz, AllMusic

Eric Sardinas & Big Motor - Boomerang

Released: 2014
Size: 78.9 MB
Time: 34:17
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Styles: Blues, Rock
Art: Front

1. Run Devil Run [3:44]
2. Boomerang [2:27]
3. Tell Me You're Mine [3:59]
4. Morning Glory [2:29]
5. Bad Boy Blues [4:43]
6. If You Don't Love Me [4:36]
7. Trouble [3:04]
8. Long Gone [2:43]
9. How Many More Years [4:31]
10. Heavy Loaded [1:57]

If you throw a boomerang the right way, it will come back. “And life is similar to this game with a boomerang – you sit there with a broken heart, and yet at the same time know it must go on, that you must move forward. You take a few steps forward and then a few back. That basically in some ways corresponds to the principle of a boomerang,” explains Eric Sardinas about the intention of the title of his Album, “Boomerang”. That’s what it’s about in the title song, but also in many of the other tracks that take on the topic in different facets and from different perspectives, and then come together and make a whole. Incidentally, the song was long under the working title “Comin’ and Goin’”, which very much expresses the intention of the new title.

“Boomerang” brought a whole new experience to the 1970’s born musician, who live in Los Angeles, when he is not somewhere in the world on tour. “We recorded the songs in between tours, not all at once, as we had always done before. There was no other way, we had no choice, because our schedule was so jam-packed in the past few years with performances all around the world. We couldn’t even clear a block of time in between for a few weeks, in order to retreat to the studio. On the other hand, it gave us the advantage to take our stage energy into the studio with us. It was all only possible though, because I wrote my songs on the road – when I come home, I have a pile of papers, napkins and other little snippets, on which I have kept my ideas and then at home I bring them all together. But that’s how I get plenty of inspiration, which expresses the reality of my fans, in which they can find themselves in. I don’t have to come up with grandiose lyrics, but rather can scoop them up from real life. And I am sure, that many song ideas came from Germany, where I have toured for many years.”
