Originally titled King Does the King's Things, here's Albert King adding his own touch to a batch of Elvis Presley tunes. Because King's style is so irreducible, the concept actually works, as he fills this album with his traditional, high-voltage guitar work and strong vocals. That isn't surprising, since four of the nine tunes on here originally started as R&B hits covered by Presley, including an instrumental version of Smiley Lewis' "One Night." No matter what the original sources may be, though, this is a strong showing in King's catalog. /Cub Koda, AllMusic

Just wait till you see him live! A pro since age of 12, Chicago-born boogie blues man Alan Gerber has developed an international fan base across the U.S., Canada, Europe, Japan, and Australia. Master of his craft, Gerber writes songs that brings people to their feet and dancing in the street, as the Montreal International Jazz Festival knows well from their 2000 event. Thousands of adoring fans pressed against the stage as Alan wrapped up his set. Fans screamed for more. Gerber and the band were urgently ushered from the scene, security urging: 'You better get out of here before the crowd tears down the stage.'

Gerber's career spans three decades, starting as front man of the group Rhinoceros many years ago. He toured along side BB King, John Lee Hooker, Procol Harum, The Moody Blues, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Canned Heat, Jeff Beck. He has written songs for Bob Dylan's film 'Renaldo and Clara' and Written and directed scores for children's productions. Alan Gerber's current efforts include the recording of several solo albums. ('Chicken Walk', 'Fools That Try', 'Boogie Man' and 'Alan Gerber Live For A Limited Time Only'.) These albums scored 5 stars and the 'Top Pick' seat in Hour Magazine with heavy airplay on radio worldwide.

His performances cover wide spectrum of styles and grooves within the blues arena. Gerber's skilled 'finger dance' upon the frets, fiddle, or ivory, served up solo, duo, or in a band, can produce a blues cocktail filled with, fun-hitting, fine boogie tickling, and breath catching performances. Holger Petersen. renowned host of "Saturday Night Blues" (CBC Weekly Radio Show), "Natch'l Blues" (CKUA Radio Show in Alberta) and the president of Stony Plain Records says: "Seeing Alan Gerber perform live is a joyous experience. You can tell he loves to be in front of an audience and truly whips them into a frenzy. He's amazing!"

One disc 57 minutes in length approximately. The sound is good for recordings of this age - clean and fairly crisp. The tracks recorded in prison suffer somewhat in comparison to the studio recordings, but are okay, and they have a feel all their own. This set contains the complete (20 tracks) recordings done by White in the period 1930-1940. There are other collections that say "complete" (most notably Sony's "Complete Bukka White"), but they usually omit 6 or so tracks, which makes this the set to own. It's a shame that music of this caliber is becoming harder to find, so pick this up soon from one of the few sellers that have it in stock.
Bukka (real name-Booker T.Washington White) White was one of the most important pre-war blues singer/guitarists of that era. His voice was rough and immediate sounding, and combined with his National steel-bodied guitar (oftentimes using a slide) style, which sounded like he was attacking his instrument, made for a very visceral listening experience. White was one of a small group of performers (Lighnin' Hopkins was another) who could make up a (good) song while he played it. Like many blues singers of the time, his song themes were about personal remembrances, death, religion, and prison, where he spent time for shooting a man. Two of the tracks heard here, "Sic 'Em Dogs", and "Po' Boy", were recorded during his incarceration in the infamous Parchman Farm by the great chronicler of indigenous music John Lomax.
There are a couple of tracks where White is accompanied by a second guitarist - Napoleon Harrison, and a couple with "Miss Minnie" (possibly Memphis Minnie), two more tracks with an unknown guitarist, and the remaining 14 tracks have the underrated Washboard Sam accompanying him on (what else?) a washboard. Sam is not known widely, but he recorded quite a few tracks of his own, which are worth hearing.
All of these tracks are pretty equal in worth, so picking out favorites is useless - you either like his style or you don't. ~Stuart Jefferson

Eugene "Buddy" Moss (January 16, 1914 – October 19, 1984) was, in the estimation of many blues scholars, one of two the most influential East Coast blues guitarists to record in the period between Blind Blake's final sessions in 1932 and Blind Boy Fuller's debut in 1935 (the other being Josh White). A younger contemporary of Blind Willie McTell, Curley Weaver and Barbecue Bob, Moss was part of a coterie of Atlanta bluesmen, and among the few of his era who had been involved in the blues revival of the 1960s and 1970s. A guitarist of uncommon skill and dexterity with a strong voice, he began as a musical disciple of Blind Blake, and may well have served as an influence on the later Piedmont-style guitarist Blind Boy Fuller. Although his career was halted in 1935 by a six-year jail term, and then by the Second World War, Moss lived long enough to be rediscovered in the 1960s, when he revealed his talent had persevered throughout the years. He was reputed to have been cankerous and mistrusting of others, the extent to which this is a case is subjective.

In later years, Moss credited friend and band-mate Barbecue Bob with being a major influence on his playing, which would be understandable given the time they spent together. Scholars also attribute Arthur "Blind" Blake as a major force in his development, with mannerisms and inflections that both share. It is also suggested by Alan Balfour and others that Moss may have been an influence on Blind Boy Fuller, as they never met and Moss' recording career ended before Fuller's began — Moss's first recordings display some inflections and nuances that Fuller had not put down on record until some years later.

Duke Robillard is one of the founding members of Roomful of Blues, as well as one of the guitarists who replaced Jimmie Vaughan in the Fabulous Thunderbirds in 1990. Between that time, Robillard pursued a solo career that found him exploring more musically adventurous territory than either Roomful of Blues or the T-Birds. On his solo recordings, the guitarist dips into blues, rockabilly, jazz, and rock & roll, creating a unique fusion of American roots music. In 1967, Duke Robillard formed Roomful of Blues in Westerly, Rhode Island. For the next decade, he led the band through numerous lineup changes before he decided that he had grown tired of the group.

Robillard left the band in 1979, initially signing on as rockabilly singer Robert Gordon's lead guitarist. After his stint with Gordon, Robillard joined the Legendary Blues Band. In 1981, the guitarist formed a new group, the Duke Robillard Band, which soon evolved into Duke Robillard & the Pleasure Kings. After a few years of touring, Duke Robillard & the Pleasure Kings landed a contract with Rounder Records, releasing their eponymous debut album in 1984. For the rest of the decade, the band toured America and released a series of albums on Rounder Records. Occasionally, the guitarist would release a jazz-oriented solo album.

In 1990, Robillard joined the Fabulous Thunderbirds. Even though he had become a member of the Austin group, the guitarist continued to record and tour as a solo artist, signing with the major label Point Blank/Virgin in 1994 for Temptation. Duke's Blues followed two years later, and after one more album for Virgin, 1997's Dangerous Place, Robillard signed to Shanachie for 1999's New Blues for Modern Man. Conversations in Swing Guitar followed later that year, and the prolific guitarist returned in mid-2000 with Explorer.

Robillard switched to the Stony Plain label with 2002's Living with the Blues, and began a steady run of releases for the imprint, including a second pairing with jazz guitarist Herb Ellis for More Conversations in Swing Guitar (2003). Exalted Lover followed later that same year. Blue Mood, a tribute to T-Bone Walker, and New Guitar Summit (which teamed Robillard with guitarists J. Geils and Gerry Beaudoin) both appeared in 2004. Guitar Groove-A-Rama was released in 2006.

Robillard continued to explore the jazz and jump blues path with 2008's A Swingin Session with Duke Robillard. He returned to his early R&B influences for 2009's Stomp! The Blues Tonight. His next album for Stony Plain, Passport to the Blues, saw him returning to the blues in all its gritty glory. In 2010, he delivered the '40s and '50s blues covers album Low Down and Tore Up, followed by Independently Blue in 2013. In April 2013, Robillard joined Bob Dylan's road band as lead guitarist after Charlie Sexton left the group. Three months later, Robillard left the group, and returned to playing solo gigs. In 2015, the guitarist once again celebrated his love of rootsy American music from the '20 to the '40s with The Acoustic Blues & Roots of Duke Robillard. In September 2016, Robillard returned with a new album, Blues Full Circle, which included guest appearances from Jimmie Vaughan, Sugar Ray Norcia, and Kelley Hunt. The following year saw the release of Duke Robillard & His Dames of Rhythm, a collection of swing tunes from the '20s and '30s with Madeleine Peyroux, Maria Muldaur, Elizabeth McGovern, and Catherine Russell. ~ by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

This album marks Sue Foley’s return to her solo career. It is her eleventh studio album and first for Canada’s Stony Plain Records. A native Canadian Foley has nicknamed herself “The Ice Queen”. Foley first appeared on a 1992 compilation called “Antone’s Women”, featuring women that played the famous Austin night club; recorded while she was still a student at The University of Texas. That same year Foley released her full length debut “Young Girl Blues” also on the Antones label.

Foley has also recorded for the Warner Music, Koch, New West, Shanachie, Ruf and Blind Pig labels. In 2001 Foley won a Juno award, Canada’s equivalent of our Grammies. She has also earned seventeen Maple Blues Awards. An accomplished guitarist Foley’s last studio recording as a solo artist was 2007’s “Time Bomb” a collaboration with Deborah Coleman and Roxanne Potvin. While in a duo with Peter Karp, Foley received a 2011 Blues Music Award nomination for “Traditional Blues Female Artist of The Year” a.k.a. The Koko Taylor Award.

Foley returns to her Texas stomping grounds to record at The Firestation Studios in San Marcos, part of the greater Austin metropolitan area. The album is produced by organist Mike Flanigin who is also a member of The Jimmie Vaughan Trio, and of Billy Gibbons and The BFG’s. Included are Foley guitar and vocals; fellow guitarists Vaughan, Gibbons, Derek O’Brien, and Charlie Sexton; bassists Chris Maresh, Billy Horton and Johnny Bradley; drummers Chris Layton, George Rains and JJ Johnson; and The Texas Horns including Mark “Kaz” Kazanoff, Al Gomez, John Mills, Jimmy Shortell and Randy Zimmerman. These are Austin’s best.

Foley has written or co-written ten of the twelve tracks. The opener features Sexton playing slide on the swampy “Come To Me” with its Bo Diddley beat. “The Lucky Ones” is a vocal and guitar duet with Vaughan. “Fool’s Gold” is another duet featuring Gibbons’ vocal and harmonica. The title track has a John Lee Hooker vibe.

Flanigin plays organ on half the tracks including the Bobby “Blue” Bland styled “If I Have Forsaken You” featuring the Texas Horns; and on “Gaslight” featuring a different horn section including two more of Austin’s finest; Ephram Owens, trumpet, and Elias Haslander, tenor sax. “The Dance” is a flamenco flavored tune.

Foley also includes two fabulous covers that are sure to garner a lot of airplay; Bessie Smith’s “Send Me to The ‘Lectric Chair” and A.P. Carter’s “Cannonball Blues”.

Foley is a triple threat as she is songwriter, guitarist and vocalist. “The Ice Queen” is the finest Canadian blues act working today. ~Richard Ludmerer

For his new album “Back to bad“ Richie Arndt has re-recorded some earlier songs, recorded two cover songs – certainly a bit unusual for a blues band, but very important to him – and wrote some new titles. After several acoustic albums, he went back to the electric guitar with all its possibilities and sounds! Blues, Americana, Rock and a pinch of Country with a new band and recorded in the new studio. After more than 20 years with the “Bluenatics“ it was time for new input. And winning the “German Blues Challenge“ with the new Richie Arndt Band in June 2018 shows, that this step was a step forward!

Sascha Oeing, formerly in the band of Gregor Hilden and the Kai Strauss band, plays the bass and Peter Weissbarth, who already played the drums on the last two CDs “At the End of the Day” and „Mississippi”, is the drummer of the Richie Arndt Band.

Backslide Cats - Only Good For The Blues

From Örnsköldsvik comes Roger Häggström who has made this record at home and written all the tunes himself. He also manages the singing in a satisfactory way. Backslide Cats consist besides Roger of Jan Ivarsson: guitar bass, Jim MacCarty: drums and Mikael Bergström: Hammond organ. Good musicians all of them, no doubt about that; the Hammond organ is handled in a way worthy of imitation. The fact that it is a home recording where you have unlimited recording time makes the sound a little too stiff and perfect here and there, but that's not only a bad thing. This dish is very personal and gives you some associations to "The Blues Band" and the choice of tunes is thoroughly varied. Here you find ZZ Top-inspired rock blues like for example "Everywhere" - groove of a caliber! Canned Heat boogie in "Living Our Lives Alone", slow handsome blues in "Heartbeat Away", jazzy blues in "Soothing". The last-mentioned is a pearl, very nice delivery.
It's always fun for me to hear home recordings, they are often more honest compared to expensive studio products and the contributors decide themselves how it shall be. This is a pleasant CD; there is just enough variation and it never gets dull. To be a home recording made under simple circumstances they have managed to create a tight and snappy sound. ~Göran Svensson

Jimi Bott - Bott & Paid For!

Jimi Bott (drummer for The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Rod Piazza & The Mighty Flyers etc.) and Portland's finest, is a modern day Super Session. Recorded all on one rainy night in Portland (imagine that), this CD represents just a small portion of this huge well of talent and hopefully is just the beginning of what will become a series that will bring “Blues From The Great NW” to the rest of the world.

Blues enthusiasts will be sure to recognize the great Paul Delay, master of the harmonica and vocalist extraordinare. While displaying the best of tradition and finesse, Paul is one of the few harpist’s who have also truly created his own cutting edge phrasing, sound, style and flavor that has yet seen rivalry. Dave “Long Distance” Kahl, also an Oregonian, has been nominated for blues bassist of the year by the Cascade Blues association at least five times. A staple in the Paul Delay Band for 3 years he is never sick at sea and by far one of everyone’s favorite bassists to play with in town.

Originally hailing from Eugene OR, Aaron “AC” Porter has been an integral part of the Portland blues scene for 24 years. His influences are clearly BB and the likes of Duke Robillard, Ronnie Earl & Hollywood Fats. Though many guitarist’s aspire to these great players and the high standards they set, few come as close as Porter to obtaining the intensity they project. Long time CA transplant Suburban Slim has been in Oregon since 1981. During this time he has astonished crowds with his unbelievably soulful voice while baffling other guitarists with his crushing, mellifluous and seemingly endless ideas on his instrument. Phil Wagner, aka Suburban Slim, is a true modern day guitar slinger/songwriter with soul!

Unbelievably Marco Savo has never been showcased on any recordings until now. Originally from Pacific Grove CA, Marco’s self taught Guitar approach stems from a world of stone cold jazz and the purest of blues. Swinging with an innate sense of rhythm, time and taste he is fueled by influences such as Jr. Watson, Chris Cain, Tiny Grimes & Cannonball Adderlay. Truly a master of his six string instrument and equally talented on four, here he works double duty taking on the bass chair for The Suburban Slim Band.

Also on the harp and vocals is Jim Wallace. Originally from Newport CA, he is heavily steeped in Chicago’s electric blues of the 50’s and 60’s. All would agree that Wallace is Portland’s finest embodiment of the great Little Walter, George “Harmonica” Smith & Walter Horton to name a few. Also featured here are his skills as a seasoned songwriter.

Elsewhere, National Heritage Fellowship Award winners Elizabeth Cotten and Doc Watson, who has won six Grammy Awards to date, are represented. Of the 29 tracks on the album, a full 21 appear on CD for the first time, all newly remastered by Grammy winner Pete Reiniger.
Bookended by actual recordings of trains from the 1950s, the compilation evidences the continuing influence of these essential American ballads, work songs, blues and broadsides. "Midnight Special," represented here by Lead Belly, has been covered by Creedence Clearwater Revival, Paul McCartney, and Van Morrison. Alt-country band the Old 97s named itself after "The Wreck of the Old 97," which has been interpreted by Johnny Cash and John Mellencamp, among many others. The compilation also includes iconic American songs "Rock Island Line," "John Henry," "Wabash Cannonball," and "Railroad Bill," all presented here in riveting performances. Bluesman Furry Lewis, who sings about the legend of "Kassie Jones," actually lost a leg to a railroad accident in 1917.
Grammy winner Jeff Place compiled and annotated Classic Railroad Songs from Smithsonian Folkways, which also contains rare photographs from the Library of Congress.
Classic Railroad Songs from Smithsonian Folkways is the ninth entry in the label's Classic Series and serves as a doorway into Folkways' incredible catalog of recordings. The Classic Series, which has covered blues, bluegrass, folk, and mountain music, among other genres, also illustrates the role Moses Asch and his Folkways label played in preserving a vital piece of American history. December 6, 2005 marks the 100th anniversary of this American documentarian's birth.

Boogie Woogie Hall of Famer Kenny 'Blues Boss' Wayne's new release includes guests Billy Branch on harmonica, guitarist Duke Robillard and BB King's long-time bass player Russell Jackson. The zoot suited 'Blues Boss' tours Russia, South America, and Europe, in addition to playing various North American clubs and festivals. Living Blues Magazine named him the "Most Outstanding Musician (Keyboard)" for 2015. "There's no boogie-woogie-blues piano man out there today who pounds the 88s with his conviction." - Chicago Sun-Times

Inspired by the Blues is Kenny’s fourth album for Stony Plain Records. His 2011 first album for the label, An Old Rock On a Roll, garnered him a nomination for the Pinetop Perkins Piano Award from the Blues Foundation, as well as being awarded two 2012 Living Blues magazine awards, one for “Best New Contemporary Blues Recording of 2011” and one for Wayne as “Most Outstanding Musician (Keyboard).”

Kenny “Blues Boss” Wayne is a veteran blues and boogie piano player and also a three-time Juno Award nominee (Canada’s Grammy), including a win for his Let It Loose CD. His main influences are Fats Domino, Ray Charles and Chuck Berry’s long-time piano player Johnnie Johnson, as well as Amos Milburn, Bill Doggett and Johnny Otis, king of the West Coast blues sound of the ‘50s.

He was raised in Los Angeles, San Francisco and New Orleans, but has been a long-time resident of British Columbia. A touring musician from his teens onward, Wayne settled in Vancouver some 30 years ago, and is now based in Kelowna, BC, but is rarely home — thanks to extended tours in Canada, the U.S. and Europe. His bass-heavy boogie piano work, as well as his original songs, makes for powerful live performances, enhanced by the flashy splendor of his boldly colored, French custom-tailored stage suits.

13. No One's Coming Home (4:28)
14. Albatross (3:20)

Brian Fraser’s fourth album Passing The Time heralds a new band and a new sound. Fraser’s trio incorporates harmonica, percussion, lap slide guitar and didgeridoo. The result is his best work to date. The Brian Fraser Trio weave their music around ancient tribal rhythms. The album finds Geelong-based Fraser moving away from his traditional fingerpicking technique to embrace the slide steel guitar, his style suggesting that of 1920s Bluesman Blind Willie Johnson.

Mick Reid, on harmonica and backing vocals, hails from Boston, USA and has 20 years of blues harmonica experience behind him. Benny Owen, on percussion, didgeridoo and backing vocals, has previously toured with Blues legend Matt Corcoran and has performed with Ash Grunwald.

“The addition of lap slide guitar, percussion, harmonica and three vocalists has added a depth to my music that’s exceeded my expectations,” says Fraser. “It’s rare to find musicians who complement my music so well. Benny is simply ferocious on percussion and Mick’s playing creates a haunting atmosphere,” says Fraser.Passing The Time is drenched in dark, pensive tones absent in his previous work. A rendition of Bobby Blue Bland’s Ain’t No Love laments a cold and brutal world. Back Up Against The Wall paints a portrait of a life going nowhere. Fraser’s version of Blind Willie Johnson’s Nobody’s Fault But Mine is a tense glimpse at religious paranoia. The Cap Fits and Bo Diddley’s Can’t Judge A Book By Its Cover injects the album with buoyant pearls of wisdom. The album’s finale, No one’s Coming Home, is a cathartic release of nervous tension.

Originally inspired to take up playing the blues in our teens, we've both been playing ever since - in bands, jams, solo, duos - and sometimes just the two of us together. Living at opposite ends of the country, we don't get to play together as often as we'd like, but when we do, the result is the kind of thing you hear on this album - a mixture of old favourites and new discoveries. It's also a homage to the men and women who first shaped the blues, and a journey through the country blues, vaudeville and jug band music of the 1920s and 1930s, to the post World War 2, electric blues of Chicago.
Recorded in a single session, and mostly in single takes (with some overdubbing for additional vocals and jug), we set out to capture the spirit of one of our live sets, meeting the blues like an old friend - but one full of surprises.

Michael Roach, one of thirteen children born to Ted and Sadie Roach of Washington, D.C., USA, sings and plays guitar in an East Coast style of blues that dates back to the 1920s. After spending several years learning directly from such well known figures as John Jackson, John Cephas and Jerry Ricks, Michael Roach has developed his own style and is now an exceptional performer. He interacts with his audience and entertains as he plays.

For the past 25 years, Michael has conducted numerous workshops throughout the USA and Europe. As a cultural arts performer, Michael has promoted African-American culture through the use of blues music. He has lectured for the Smithsonian Institute (USA), Oxford University (UK) and more recently at the University of Metz (France). In July 2004, he was involved in the organization of a conference held at the University of Gloucestershire (UK) called ‘Overseas Blues–European Perspectives on African American Music’. The University Press of Mississippi published the papers from the conference in 2007.

Michael is the founder of the European Blues Association and currently serves as its Director of Development and Secretary. He is the Director, Guitar Instructor and Vocals Teacher for the annual Blues Week 2000 – 2017 program (a week of lectures, guitar, harmonica, piano/keyboards and vocals tuition) at Exeter University (2000/2004), the University of Northampton (2005/2013), the University of Worcester (2015), the University of Northampton (2016) and Hartpury College (2017). Michael also presented ‘Deep Blue’, a three part series on blues music featured on BBC Radio 4 in March 2003. It is Michael’s communication skills together with his musicianship that has enabled him to bring about a greater understanding of blues music and the Black experience.

The band described their catchy single “Lay Your Weapons Down” as “inspired by early rock ‘n’ roll from the ‘50s and ‘60s, in the same city that one of rock ‘n’ roll’s pioneers Fats Domino was born and raised”.

The blues has never been far from Tony Joe White’s sound. Best known as a swamp rocker and, with early hit “Polk Salad Annie,” somewhat of an off-kilter pop/soul man, White’s dusky baritone voice, laconic delivery, shadowy harmonica and snakelike guitar were never more than a few chords away from a bluesman’s approach. It’s no coincidence that Eric Clapton, Etta James, Joe Cocker, and Robert Cray have covered his songs.

But this is considered White’s first full-fledged blues release. Where he once waded ankle deep in the genre, he fully submerges himself in the muddy Mississippi delta, covering songs made famous by blues legends John Lee Hooker (“Boom Boom”), Lightnin’ Hopkins (“Awful Dreams”), and Jimmy Reed (“Big Boss Man”). White, who has recorded sporadically since 1969, doesn’t need to bolster his organic bona fides. Yet this album’s near primal recording setting (in his barn), with songs played either solo or with occasional skeletal drums and bass backing, scales back White’s already stripped down vibe to its core.

The opening title track, along with a comparatively frisky cover of Charley Patton’s “Down The Dirt Road Blues,” is the singer-songwriter at his most rhythmically propulsive. The majority of songs, such as the muggy Southern summer dog day vibe of “Sundown Blues,” pulse with slow hypnotically repeated riffs, perfect for White’s dry, husky, talk-sung drawl, punctuated by his Dylan-on-downers harp. The approach shifts from unaccompanied solo acoustic guitar on classics “Baby Please Don’t Go,” “Big Boss Man” and arguably the most chilling version of “Heartbreak Hotel” ever recorded, to a fuller electric yet still nakedly intense “Boom Boom.”

No one breaks much of a sweat here. White’s distinctive mumble seems like it was recorded while drifting in and out of a narcotic-induced coma. Nevertheless, this music resonates with the dark, ominous, rootsy authenticity Tony Joe White has always exuded. ~Hal Horowitz

My earliest mentors were the boogie woogie masters Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson, and Meade Lux Lewis. I discovered guitar blues with Josh White, who led me to Big Bill, Leadbelly, Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry, and eventually to the Rev. Gary Davis, whom I took to churches where he preached and sang in Harlem. Eventually I performed with him in concert and on radio in a show that launched Bob Dylan's career (reviewed in the NY Times).
I've opened for Rev. Davis, Brownie and Sonny, and performed with many others in the blues and folk music scene of the 1960s and 70s. Making my home now in Columbus, Ohio I've opened for Dave Van Ronk and Jerry Jeff Walker, and in March,2002 won second place in the River City Blues Competition in Marietta, Ohio, "kicking the butt of 16 bands," in the words of the president of the Columbus Blues Alliance. I've performed in the 2000 and 2002 Traditional Blues Festival in Columbus, with Ann Rabson, Lloyd Spiegel, Mr. Downchild, Bierdorf and Kolbe, and Little Toby Walker.
Blues Makes Me Happy is my second solo album.

The good news is that Fathead is back and this live workout from Toronto's Silver Dollar provides 16 good reasons why their return is essential to party-friendly Canadian blues. A sometimes odd amalgam of forces come together in this band to consistently produce standout recordings: the oft-decorated, always engaging vocalist John Mays is steeped in R&B to Al Lerman's authoritative, Chicago-weaned harp and horn contributions; Teddy Leonard grafts rock to blues guitar, all driven forward by one of the tightest rhythm sections around.

The album takes a few songs to ignite until Bobby Charles' "Why Are People Like That?" drop-kicks the groove into serious overdrive. Mays' showpiece "Hard Times" blossoms into a guitar and harp-driven jam that resonates well beyond the room. A favourite track is the uppity "Am I Wrong?", a song that nails the band's unique blend of blues to funk-based R&B, an infectious combination that distances them from the nearest competition.

The triple threat of Lerman's harp, Mays' voice and Leonard's lethal guitar help make "Livelier Than Ever" Fathead's full house, an all-important fifth disc that underlines the band's hard-earned reputation as a crack live powerhouse with more than their fair share of soulfulness. /Eric Thom

Personnel: John Mays (lead vocals, tambourine); Al Lerman (harmonica, tenor saxophone, vocals); Teddy Leonard (guitar, vocals); Omar Tunnoch (bass, vocals); Hayden Vialva (drums).

In May, The BBC World recorded the band for a worldwide television broadcast on Destination Music. On Southern Livin', Gibson returns to the studio with his tight blues rhythm section consisting of former Albert King band members David Bowen (guitar) and James Jackson (bass guitar), along with Cedric Keel on drums and special guest Charlie Wood on keys. With clever songs by both Bowen and Gibson, the band sounds better than ever and exudes a confidence some musicians possess, but few earn. In addition, Gibson's acrobatic harmonica riffs are absolutely astounding.

Chief Schabuttie Gilliame - Snakes Crawls At Night

Born in Eqypt in 1925, the Chief was the first son of a tribal Chief and was raised in the tribal traditions. He moved to America in 1969 and began singing in a place called Momma Leones in New York. After that he moved to Arkansas and ended up getting a job singing with Charlie Rich. He loved singing country music but it was in Dark Hollow, Arkansas where he heard the “Blues” and his destiny was clear. He got a job working as a roadie for Arkansas Larry Davis and Albert King. One night he filled in singing for Albert King , who had laryngitis, and his Blues career was born.

He moved to Tucson in 1981, where he met harmonica player (and producer) Bob Corritore and developed a friendship that has eventually resulted in the recording and release of ‘Snakes Crawls At Night’. The music comes from four sessions of varying musicians in Clarke Rigsby’s Tempe studio in 2001 and 2002.

In 1989 he moved to Phoenix and quickly made friends with local legends, Bob Tate and Dennie Hartnet., who helped him learn about the music business. The Chief has performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival, The Celebrity Theatre and many other venues around the Valley.

He has been a mainstay of the Phoenix blues scene for the past 23 years. A stout, jolly man who calls Voodoo his religion, Chief is a lover of women and he claims to have 7 wives and 17 children.” Ain’t that a man?

The Chief performs ten of his original blues backed by four distinguished electric band ensembles, giving the listener a double treat: not only in the excellent blues of Chief Schabuttie Gilliame and the bands backing him, but also in providing a most interesting exercise in blues redux—what would the great Howlin’ Wolf have sounded like backed by differing blues bands that played other styles than his classic West Side Chicago band sound of guitar, sax and piano?

For this set, Corritore has assembled some of the best musicians on the current blues scene, including heavyweight guitarists like Kid Ramos, Junior Watson, Rusty Zinn, Kirk Eli Fletcher, Louisiana Red, Teddy Morgan, Johnny Rapp and Buddy Reed; the drummers include Richard Innes, Paul Fasulo and Chico Chism; Tom Mahon and Matt Bishop provide piano, whilst Corritore is featured with his own superb harp.

With a line-up like that it would be difficult to fail, but Gilliame more than holds his own in such illustrious company, being the possessor of a gravelly voice, permeated with humour, that was always intended to sing the blues. Gilliame possesses one of those great, deep blues voices that cuts right to the bone. The Chief is known for his wild stage antics and his gargle-with-gasoline-and-rinse-with-asphalt voice.

The music here is tough, vintage blues circa 50’s era Chicago/Southern blues and like the best of that music features excellent ensemble playing from all involved.

10. Since You've Been Gone (Feat. Darcel Wilson) (2:59)

Love Makes a Woman is The Knickerbocker All-Stars 4th recording. When two phenomenal vocalists such as Darcel Wilson and Thornetta Davis get together for a session, it’s going to be special. Love Makes a Woman was inspired by the great female soul and R&B singers who popularized the genre. These carefully selected tunes barely scratch the surface of the sacred music of early Soul and R&B. This recording spans a wide range of emotional and musical content including an instrumental that allows the band to let loose.
Darcel Wilson has one of the more sensual and engaging voices, especially when she serenades her listeners as performed on “Talk to Me.” She has worked as an instructor of theory, ensembles and voice at Berklee College of Music in Boston since 1998. Darcel’s contribution to this album was invaluable.
For blues enthusiasts, Thornetta Davis, Detroit’s Queen of the Blues, needs no introduction. Thornetta is an internationally recognized vocalist and songwriter and has won 30 Detroit Music Awards. Her voice is confident, vibrant and sends a clear message of the meaning and emotion of her songs. There are very few singers who can perform Bonnie Raitt’s “Nick of TIme” with similar compassion and tenderness.
As Duke Ellington announced at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival, “I hope you will enjoy these things – we’ll start by Just Scratchin’ the Surface.”

Gaetano Pellino gained notice from the moment he first played guitar in 1978 at the age of 17. A native of Naples, Italy, it was only a short time, about four years, after Pellino picked up the instrument that he became a session musician touring with international pop sensation Franco Simone, appearing on Italian national television RAI1 and RAI2 with Simone.
By 1984, Pellino was working as a sound engineer and producer, leading to his creation of ‘Fandango Band’ in 1988. This powerful trio was well recognized and led to a multi-year tour of nearly 1000 shows in just six years. In 1993, Fandango Band produced the rock blues album "Il Leone e Il Suo Mercoledi," and became the opening act for ‘Deep Purple’ in Forli. In 1995, Gaetano moved to Perth, Australia, where ‘Fandango Band’ won the Bridgetown Blues Festival Award as ‘Most Outstanding Electric Band.’ Upon returning to his native country, Pellino opened his own recording studio. Here he further perfected his skills as a sound engineer and producer, working in many productions, from pop to hard rock, soul, hip-hop, television, and a successful independent movie. As a producer, Pellino won a Golden Disc and a Platinum Disc in 2004 and 2007, for his work on two of his brother’s compact discs. Returning to live performance of his signature rock-blues music, Gaetano published "Kick'd Out From Heaven" (2005), "Watermelon Slices" (2006) and "First Love" (2008), “2nd Century Blues” (2013) and “On The Other Hand” (2014) - double cd featuring the tremendous talented vocalist Soul Sarah - for which he was the writer, producer, and sound engineer. During the same time, Pellino toured extensively across Italy and Southern Europe. In May, 2009, he performed as the headliner at the internationally recognized ‘Playing With Fire’ Concert Series in Omaha, Nebraska. In July 2012 Gaetano gained a large consense at the International Blues Festival in Mont Tremblant, Quebec, Canada. In August 2014 Gaetano Pellino was invited in Omaha, NE, again, to play, along with several blues artists from all over America and Europe, at the benefit concert. On that occasion Gaetano has been recognized as one of the best guitarists on stage. Back to Nebraska in March and April 2015 he hired a recording studio in collaboration with some well known local musician, to record his latest work “Against Any Wind” that contains many original songs and is set for release soon. Pellino’s trademark powerful guitar, bluesy voice and wide rhythms make for an unforgettable performance.
