London-based ‘Born Healer’ make an assured album debut with ”Til The Dawn’ which is out now on Spiral Sun Records. Eleven tracks – eight originals and three covers – featuring the outstanding vocal talent of Helen Turner.
Helen was previously lead singer of the Bare Bones Boogie Band, who produced 3 very good Blues-Rock albums between 2010 and 2013, and the new line-up includes two of her former bandmates – guitarist Iain Black and drummer Andy Jones. They are joined here by Marek Funkas on Bass. It was recorded at Soundmagic Studios in Essex by Steve Tsoi who also worked on the 3 BBBB albums.
The band collaborated on writing the original songs which are a mix of uptempo Blues-Rock and and some terrific slower numbers such as the title track ”Til The Dawn’, a superlative soulful blues which gives Helen’s voice full reign to captivate and to soar. The opener ‘Pressure Valve’ sets the bar high with an undulating rhythm, followed by a majestic version of Taj Mahal’s ‘Leaving Trunk’.
Highlights include a haunting ballad, ‘Never Gone’; a great rocker, ‘Brand New Day’ and a very good version of Rory Gallagher’s “Million Miles Away”. Their interpretation of Led Zeppelin’s classic “Since I’ve Been Loving You” brings this excellent CD to it’s close.
‘Til The Dawn’ is an impressive debut album from a band with a classic sound and a great future. ~By Jeremy Rees
