He did his set at a Playing With Fire show in Omaha and then followed up by playing at the Afterburn show at local bar on a borrowed guitar until 1 am. This latest Delmark release by vocalist Willie Buck is very much influenced by Muddy Waters and the classic 1950s Chicago sound. Buck is backed by the Rockin’ Johnny Band with Johnny and Rick Kreher on guitar, John Sefner bass, Steve Bass on drums, the excellent Barrelhouse Chuck on piano and Martin Lang and Bharath Rajakumar sharing blues harp duties.

‘Doin’ Good And Bad At The Same Time’ opens the disc; it’s a Buck original employing a very Hubert Sumlin-ish guitar riff from Johnny. ‘Darling I Miss You So’ is here credited to Ted Taylor, but I believe Tiny Topsy and Lillian Offitt cut this song before Taylor. The versions by Topsy, Lillian Offitt, and in fact Taylor himself are credited to M. Babb who is apparently Morgan Babb, aka The Reverend Morgan Babb (thanks Mike!). Whatever, Buck and Co. give it a neat shuffle treatment, harp lays out but Chuck is strong on piano, and Buck’s vocal is impressive.

The Muddy influence is obvious on covers of ‘Strange Woman’, ‘I Don’t Know Why’, ‘Two Trains Running’, ‘Going Down Main Street’, ‘Streamline Woman’, ‘What’s The Matter With The Mill’ (aka ‘Can’t Get No Grinding’), ‘My Eyes Keep Me In Trouble’, and ‘Blow Wind Blow’. ‘Strange Woman’ utilises a ‘Help Me’ bass pattern, on ‘Two Trains Running’ Willie’s vocal is supported by Johnny’s acoustic guitar on a country blues-styled version. ‘Streamline Woman’ features Johnny’s skittering Muddy-style slide and Bharath Rajakumar on harp allied to a tough vocal treatment from Buck. ‘My Eyes Keep Me In Trouble’ pretty much follows the original version, as does ‘Blow Wind Blow’ with Martin Lang playing blues harp and Barrelhouse Chuck solid on piano behind Buck’s in-the-pocket vocal.

The fine original, ‘Cell Phone Man’, features the twin harps of Lang and Rajakumar on a song that owes a debt to the classic late ‘50s Wolf sound. However, Magic Sam is the reference point for the bouncy original, ‘Two Women Talking’. ‘Tow Truck Man’ is also Muddy style, utilising a rhythm pattern similar to ‘I Want To Be Loved’. The Buck original, ‘Tried To Work Something Out With You’, is definitely my pick of the litter, a bouncy shuffle with Rajakumar switching to guitar and Lang on blues harp allied to a sweet vocal from Willie Buck. ‘I Wanna Talk To My Baby’ is another acoustic country blues, with Willie’s vocal backed only by Rockin’ Johnny’s guitar.

By now you may have pegged Willie Buck as just a Muddy Waters imitator, and for sure he is heavily influenced by Muddy, but there is more to him than that. He plays old school ’50s Chicago blues the way it was always played. Nothing slick, no soul-blues posturing, no rock-blues, just the real deal, rough as a bear’s arse blues of the kind we don’t hear too much of these days. /Phil Wight, Blues & Rhythm

Those of you who are not familiar with French singer and guitar player Mr. Tchang will now have the chance to discover him, and be caught by his warm and passionate blues by listening to this new album released by French label Bluztrack Productions.

His knowledge of blues has allowed him to back such amazing musicians like Big George Brock, James “Super Chikan” Johnson, Nico Wayne Toussaint and Malted Milk among others. He also leads different groups and, this time, his band is Bluz Explosion, which includes Sylvain Tejerizo on sax, Antoine Escalier on bass and Pascal Delmas on drums, together with excellent guests like Spanish musician Víctor Puertas on Hammond, piano, harpsichord, harmonica and vocals, Arnaud Fradin on rhythm guitar and Catherine Girard on washboard. All of them perfectly match with Mr. Tchang’s explosive and powerful style, which gives a magnificent support and brightness to the whole recording.

Thirteen songs that move between Chicago West Side blues and soul spiced ballads the group perform on a very actual, energetic way but, at the same time, with a breath of cool fresh air. 21st century blues lovers will surely enjoy this ‘explosion’ of intense and passionate blues that Mr. Tchang and his Bluz Explosion present in this more than recommendable album. /La Hora Del Blues

The Fabulous Thunderbirds is a familiar name for anyone into contemporary blues and blues rock. This is the band that created classic albums like T-Bird Rhythm and Tuff Enuff, powered by hits like the title track and “Wrap It Up,” Tuff Enuff went platinum, selling more than one million copies. Led by founding member Kim Wilson, the Fabulous Thunderbirds have been nominated for Grammy Awards six times and for Blues Music Awards more than 20 times.

Formed in 1974, the band celebrates their 50th anniversary with the release of their first new studio album in eight years - Struck Down. Struck Down features 9 original new songs co-written by Hamilton bluesman Steve Strongman & Kim Wilson and a stellar cover of Memphis Minnie’s song “Nothin’ in Ramblin. The album was produced by Kim Wilson, Steve Strongman & Glen Parrish, recorded in New Jersey and Hamilton, and mixed by Shelly Yakus (John Lennon/U2/Tom Petty).

A major inspiration to generations of improvising musicians, Albert Ammons is best remembered as an exciting pianist who inaugurated the Blue Note record label by hammering out blues and boogie duets with Meade “Lux” Lewis, and as the father of hard bop tenor saxophonist Gene Ammons. Born in Chicago on September 23, 1907, he learned the rudiments of piano from his parents and neighbors and began cultivating an ability to play the blues when he was 12 years old. His main influences were Jimmy Blythe, Jimmy and Alonzo Yancey, Hersal Thomas, and Clarence “Pinetop” Smith, who personally encouraged the aspiring pianist. At the age of 17 Ammons met Meade “Lux” Lewis while they were both drivers for Chicago’s Silver Taxicab Company. The two men honed their skills by pounding the ivories on an upright at the depot and by gigging publicly after hours, sometimes doubling up for boogie-woogie piano four hands. By 1934 Ammons was leading his own little group at the Club De Lisa on the South Side. A powerhouse stride pianist who had stylistic traits in common with Fats Waller (the two would have made a formidable duo had anyone ever thought to bring them together), Ammons became strongly identified with the boogie-woogie style after recording “Boogie Woogie Stomp” and “Swanee River Boogie” for Decca with his Rhythm Kings in 1936. Ammons next decided to take himself to New York, where he gigged regularly at Café Society (Downtown and Uptown) with Meade “Lux” Lewis and the Kansas City contingent of Pete Johnson and blues shouter Big Joe Turner. In 1938 the four created a sensation at the Spirituals to Swing concert in Carnegie Hall, establishing boogie-woogie as a crowd-pleasing trend that made good money for most of the popular big bands in the nation, including those led by Benny Goodman, who actually jammed with Ammons, and Tommy Dorsey, who never hesitated to take advantage of a good thing. Ammons, who had cut a few sides for Vocalion in 1938, recorded a series of solos and duets with Meade “Lux” Lewis on January 6, 1939, now established as the very first titles in the catalog of Alfred Lion’s newly founded Blue Note label. Ammons was also the backbone of the Boogie Woogie Trio, a hot little unit that recorded a stomp called “Woo Woo” with trumpeter Harry James for the Brunswick record company on February 1, 1939. On April 7 he recorded several blues and boogie improvisations in the company of guitarist Teddy Bunn, bassist Johnny Williams, and drummer Sidney Catlett as the rhythm section of a quintet alternately led by trumpeter Frankie Newton and trombonist J.C. Higginbotham, then with both horns to form a sextet presented by Blue Note as the Port of Harlem Jazzmen. Ammons recorded a passel of duets with Pete Johnson for Victor in 1941, but then ceased performing for a while after accidentally severing a fingertip while fixing up a sandwich. In 1944 Ammons recorded for Commodore as a soloist and with a solid little band that had a front line of trumpeter Hot Lips Page, trombonist Vic Dickenson, and tenor saxophonist Don Byas. He also performed a duet with Meade “Lux” Lewis in Boogie Woogie Dream, a motion picture starring Lena Horne. During the years 1945-1949 he returned to Chicago, held down a steady gig at the Bee Hive, and periodically recorded for Mercury, backing legendary blues woman Sippie Wallace, collaborating with guitarists Lonnie Johnson and Ike Perkins, and, on April 8, 1946, sharing a memorable session with his son Gene Ammons. His final achievements consisted of Decca recordings with Lionel Hampton and a special performance at the White House in the nation’s capital for Harry Truman’s second-term inauguration. Illness forced Albert Ammons off the scene and when he passed away on December 2, 1949, he was only 42 years old. Tragically, Gene Ammons would follow his father’s example by passing away at the age of 49, in 1974.

Ammons was born in Chicago, Illinois. His parents were pianists, and he had learned to play by the age of ten. His interest in boogie-woogie is attributed to his close friendship with Meade Lux Lewis and also his father's interest in the style. Both Albert and Meade would practice together on the piano in the Ammons household. From the age of ten, Ammons learned about chords by marking the depressed keys on the family pianola (player piano) with a pencil and repeated the process until he had mastered it. He also played percussion in a drum and bugle corps as a teenager and was soon performing with bands in clubs in Chicago. After World War I he became interested in the blues, learning by listening to the Chicago pianists Hersal Thomas and the brothers Alonzo and Jimmy Yancey. In the early to mid-1920s Ammons worked as a cab driver for the Silver Taxicab Company. In 1924 he met up with his boyhood friend Meade Lux Lewis, who was also then a taxi driver. Soon the two players began working as a team, performing at club parties. Ammons started his own band at the Club DeLisa in 1934 and remained at the club for the next two years. During that time he played with a five-piece band that included Guy Kelly, Dalbert Bright, Jimmy Hoskins, and Israel Crosby. Ammons also recorded as Albert Ammons's Rhythm Kings for Decca Records in 1936. The Rhythm Kings' version of "Swanee River Boogie" sold a million copies, and their 1936 recording of "Boogie Woogie Stomp" has been described as "the first 12-bar piano based boogie-woogie, [which] was imitated by many jazz bands." Ammons moved from Chicago to New York City, where he teamed up with another pianist, Pete Johnson. The two performed regularly at the Café Society, occasionally joined by Lewis or by other jazz musicians, including Benny Goodman and Harry James. On December 23, 1938, Ammons appeared at Carnegie Hall with Johnson and Lewis in From Spirituals to Swing, a concert produced by John H. Hammond, which helped launch the boogie-woogie craze. Two weeks later, the record producer Alfred Lion, who had attended the concert, started Blue Note Records, recording nine Ammons solos, including "The Blues" and "Boogie Woogie Stomp", eight by Lewis and two duets in a one-day session in a rented recording studio. Ammons' grave at Lincoln Cemetery In 1941, Ammons's boogie-woogie music was accompanied by drawn-on-film animation in the short film Boogie-Doodle, by Norman McLaren. Ammons played himself in the movie Boogie-Woogie Dream (1944), with Lena Horne and Johnson. As a sideman with Sippie Wallace in the 1940s Ammons recorded a session with his son, the tenor saxophonist Gene Ammons. Although the boogie-woogie fad began to die down in 1945, Ammons had no difficulty securing work. He continued to tour as a solo artist, and between 1946 and 1949 recorded his last sides, for Mercury Records, with the bassist Israel Crosby, and took on the position of staff pianist with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra. In 1949 he played at the inauguration of President Harry S. Truman. During his last years, Ammons played mainly at the Beehive Club and the Tailspin Club in Chicago. Four days before he died, he had been at the Yancey apartment listening to Don Ewell and Jimmy Yancey play. Ammons could play only one song, having just regained the use of his hands after a temporary paralysis. Ammons died of natural causes on December 2, 1949, in Chicago, at age 42. He was interred at the Lincoln Cemetery, at Kedzie Avenue in Blue Island, Illinois.

It comes as little surprise to hear that Albert Washington's 1973 album, Sad and Lonely, combines blues and soul, much as his slightly earlier sides for Fraternity did. The only difference is that the music sounded a little bit more polished, in an early-'70s sort of way. It was perhaps also tweaked a bit by being recorded in Memphis, some of the arrangements including backing by the Memphis Horns and backup vocals by the woman singers the Girls.

However, in all it's a respectable but ordinary set, without the songs or the quite top of the line vocal and guitar to lift Washington above journeyman status. "You're Messing Up My Mind" bears the heavy influence of James Brown's funk, and there are echoes of the Memphis soul of the likes of Otis Redding here and there. But for the most part it's a more relaxed endeavor, "My Mother's Prayer" making the artist's gospel leanings most explicit.

Indeed, the album probably came along a few years too early for Washington to fully benefit from it - his somewhat laid-back blues-soul fusion wasn't terribly widespread at the time, but would become more commonplace in blues music in the final decades of the 20th century. The 2004 CD reissue on Westbound adds a previously unreleased outtake from the sessions, a cover of Jimmy Hughes' classic "Steal Away." /Richie Unterberger, AllMusic

Over four decades, William Crawford aka Willie Buck has raised a family, worked as an auto mechanic, played a bit part in the film Hoop Dreams, and occasionally stepped on-stage in Chicago as a blues singer. Only his rarest recordings have ever been issued, but Delmark Records has finally seen fit to issue a full-length CD, with studio tracks and five live performances, all from the early to mid-'80s. Directly derived from his mentor and main man Muddy Waters, Buck's singing has that lean and tough, clear as a bell, direct edge so typical of his hero, as he covers Mud's tunes and adds a few of his own to this mix. You also hear traces of Magic Sam, Jimmy Reed, and Little Walter, all acknowledged influences over Buck's career that has languished in obscurity.

While Buck's voice bears the unmistakable stamp of Waters, it is a bit less pronounced, not quite as gritty, and more soulful. The studio tracks feature many famous Muddy Waters numbers like "She's All Right," with a bit of a Howlin' Wolf sound sneaking in, the lecherous "She's Nineteen Years Old," the stompdown "I Want to Be Loved" (incorrectly titled "I Want You to Love Me"), and the evergreen, upbeat "Got My Mojo Workin'." Help from premier bluesmen like guitarists Louis Myers and John Primer, bassist Dave Myers, and keyboardist Big Moose Walker push the music onward.

The five tracks recorded at Robert's 500 Room on 63rd Street in Chi-Town are thin as far as the recording. Buck's voice is in the background as opposed to the instruments, and these tracks are little more than a curiosity, as there must be more well-documented live sessions from Buck somewhere. Overall this is a welcome release, as the world gets to discover a vibrant and talented Willie Buck ostensibly for the first time. /Michael G. Nastos, AllMusic

Mike Zito, president of Gulf Coast Records, announces the signing of powerhouse blues and soul singer Lara Price and the release of her label debut album, ‘Half & Half’. Now based in Austin, Texas, Lara Price recorded the album partly in Texas and partly in the San Francisco Bay Area, hence its title.

“Half & Half was a way for me to honor the San Francisco Bay Area music family, because without them I wouldn’t be able to keep up in this Austin music scene,” said Lara Price. “The other ‘half’ is a representation of what I have learned so far, as I have soaked up eight years- worth of Austin music. I feel like I am just scratching the service as to what the Austin music scene is about and I look forward to putting that experience on my next album. Technically, the album was recorded 60% in Texas 40% in California with 22 musicians and three studios in two states,” she added about the recording sessions.

“Lara Price has been a fantastic artist for years,” said Mike Zito in announcing her signing. “She’s so deserving of a national audience. Her voice is soulful and righteous and I expect our fans to fall in love with her.”

To celebrate the 35th anniversary of the film Road House, The Estate of Jeff Healey, Sony Music and Mondo Music proudly presented, Road House: The Lost Soundtrack. The complete, previously unreleased Jeff Healey Band soundtrack to the 1989 cult classic film was made available for the first time ever. This release features all twelve songs used in the film itself (eight of which were previously unreleased) as well as seven additional bonus tracks - songs recorded during the Road House sessions, that had never before been released in any format.

Balta Bordoy is an elegant guitar player from Mallorca, now based in Barcelona, who precisely masters styles like the most genuine blues, swing or jazz. Authentic blues with a live feeling! One of the hottest blues bands from the far north, the Alba Blues Band from Hitzacker on the Elbe, writes its own blues stories. With "page one" they present their first CD album with completely original compositions of blues, a pinch of folk and authentic blues rock. Originally released in 1997 on their own Wang Recording label, The Nightporters' debut album "Feelin' Good" caused a sensation on the continent. Within months of its release, The Nightporters were headlining festivals throughout Europe. The album was one of the top selling blues CDs of the year. The general consensus was that here at last was a great British R&B outfit in the fine tradition of fine bands such as The Yardbirds, The Rolling Stones and Dr. Feelgood, and not only that, but a band that could swing and rock out to rival any contemporary American act.

The Nightporters recorded the "Feelin' Good" album at the legendary Sawmills Studio in Cornwall. This was the studio where British band Oasis had recorded their debut CD. The band played mostly live in the studio and the eight tracks here were recorded and mixed in four days flat. From the opening swagger of "Mellow Down Easy", through the seven and a half minute tour de force that is "Hip Shake", the album never lets up, capturing all the explosive energy and excitement of one of The Nightporters' live shows. For those familiar with the British blues scene of the 1990s, The Nightporters and The Big Combo are not unfamiliar names. Guitar player and singer Vince Lee has been a mainstay on the South West music scene for decades. In 1996 he formed The Big Combo, a band that has almost become legendary in the Cornwell area. Bassist Al Wallis was all this time on his side. The Nightporters were a band who at the time was a guarantee for an evening of "fun" of the highest order. But in 2002, at the highlight of the band and after a very succesful tour in Canada, they split up.

Around 2003 Lee and Wallis came together with Martin Vowles (guitar) en Kevin Crowe (drums) of the Nightporters and they formed The Wildcards, a 4 piece band with a a combination of deep blues, West Coast swing, rockabilly, surf, boogie, jump and jive, rock 'n roll. Already in 2004, they threw their debut album 'On Fire' on the market. In 2006 they toured with Gary Primich and they had plans to do this all over again in 2007 but Primich's unexpected death prevented a new tour. 2007 followed with the successful second album "Raising Hell", full of good songs with a blistering rendition of 'St James Infirmary' and posthumously dedicated to Gary Primich.

In 2010, they delivered their third shoot "When The Moon Shines Bright"; nasty, horny and gritty are the keys to this album. Again a great mix of various styles, rockabilly, hints of reggae and ska, rhythm & blues, West Coast jump and even a touch of surf. In 2008 Vince Lee had met his partner Becca Langsford and since then they have performed together in various band settings. He produced and played most of the instruments on Becca's debut album 'Big Surprise' in 2011. Martin Vowles and Kevin Crowe returned to the re-established Nightporters for a one time European tour and in 2014 they joined female harmonica player Dana Dixon and the Big Kats.

Although assembling a band as renowned as the members of The Blues Brothers Band would be tough, B. Christopher did one heck of a job trying. The maestros on this project include: the album’s producer and band leader B. Christopher on guitar; Eddie Testa on lead vocals; the legendary Anton Fig on drums; Nick Douglas on bass and backup vocals; Blues Music Award winner Bruce Katz on keys; Grammy Award winner Andy Snitzer on tenor and baritone sax; Ryan Keberle on trombone; original Blues Brother Band member Tom “Bones” Malone on baritone sax; Studebaker John on harmonica; and Sharlotte Gibson on backup vocals.

Things kick off with that classic drinking song whose title contains the words that many of us have uttered lots of times – “Hey Bartender”. Telling you nothing you don’t already know, the song is indeed a sing-a-long, dance floor filling smoker. With all the horns, including the Mississippi saxophone, in play; the keyboard wailing – as you might expect in a Floyd Dixon song; this rhythm on this one, led by heart thumpin’ beats from Anton (drums) and Nick (drums); is totally ablaze. With that all pumping them up, Eddie and B. are killing it on the vocals and lead guitar.

Just like the band did in the movie, not a beat was missed between the end of the last track and the start of this one – “Everybody Needs Somebody To Love” (B. Berns/S. Burke/J. Wexler). Also, not much has changed as well, it’s another full throttle performance by everyone involved. Having never heard of Eddie Testa before, I’ve got to tell you, he’s quickly making a fan of me. His vocals, along with the deep bass backups of Nick and the contrasting soprano style harmonies of Sharlotte, combine to make this one hell of a well sung song.

Why stop now, when you’re on a roll? This is the perfect spot to do a seven-minute ass kickin’ rendition of “Sweet Home Chicago” (R. Johnson). With the instrumentation on this disc, and the talented players on those instruments, it is so easy to sound redundant. So yes, this is another rhythm fueled smoker. Individual highlights feature Eddie making me shout “hell yes” every time he belts out the line ” C’mon baby, don’t you want to go…..”; ferocious drum work from Anton; barrelhouse piano runs from Bruce; sizzling tenor sax and trumpet leads from Andy and Tony, respectively; and some killer (sweet home) Chicago style blues licks from the boss man on guitar.

With it having won Henry Mancini an Emmy, two Grammys, and being inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, “Peter Gunn” is most likely one of the best, and most recognizable TV theme songs of all time. From a sheer musical point of view, being an instrumental with nothing but masterful musicianship, it’s number one on my list. From the very aggressive opening rhythm beat, to the fierce horn section leads, to the rhythm guitar runs, the guys did this one justice by pretty much playing it note for note and sounding as good as the original version.

One of the album’s, and the movie’s as well, most energetic performance is “Gimmie Some Lovin” (S. and M. Windwood/S. Davis). Making Rolling Stones top 500 songs it was the Spencer Davis Group’s biggest hit and started off what would become a most amazing career for the then fifteen-year-old Stevie Windwood. Again, since this is a tribute album and making covers your own never comes into play, the guys did this – and every other track – justice by keeping it very real. With the whole band in a fierce jam mode behind him, Eddie, with strong backup from Sharlotte, puts on the album’s most compelling vocal presentation. Other tracks on this excellent release by The B. The Stephen Barry Band has long been established as one of Canada's finest blues and folk-blues ensembles. A native Montrealer, Stephen Barry has assembled some of the city's best blues musicians and they have been performing steadily for the last thirty-eight years. The Stephen Barry Band has performed on every blues stage in Quebec, Ontario and the Maritimes and taken their show further abroad, performing both in Europe and South America.

In 1996, the band was awarded the best Blues Band in Canada at the Jazz Report Awards, as their record "Happy Man" was voted the best recording at the same ceremony. In 2001, Stephen Barry was voted Bass Player of the Year by the Toronto Blues Society. Stephen Barry has also been honored at the Lys Blues 2004 in recognition of the contribution he has made to the Quebec Blues scene over his 35-year career.

The band's repertoire encompasses a variety of styles ranging from folk-blues to swing to modern electric blues, and is further complimented by their original material. The band also offers a show entitled "The Blues Anthology", tracing the history of the blues from turn of the century acoustic blues through to the electric sounds of the 40's, 50's and 60's.

Over the years the Stephen Barry Band has had the privilege of performing with such blues legends as John Lee Hooker, Bo Diddley, Pinetop Perkins, Hubert Sumlin, Big Mama Thornton, Buddy Guy, the notorious Johnny "Big Moose" Walker, Oliver Jones and more recently Susie Arioli. He also has accompanied legendary blues/R&B Hall of Famer Harry Vann "Piano Man" Walls in concert and on the CD "In the Evening".

Floating Bridge was from Seattle, Washington and formed in 1967 then disbanded two years later in 1969. The members were as follows: Rich Dangel, Joe Johansen and Denny MacLeod on guitar, Pat Gossan as vocals, Michael Jacobsen ~ Electric Cello, Saxophone, Joe Johnson ~ Bass, Andrew Lang ~ Trumpet and Michael Marinelli on the drums. Most of the members of the band are now deceased. Their music is a mix of blues rock, acid rock and psychedelia worth checking out.

The long-awaited album launch from Bendigo’s favorite time-travelling ragtime-playing rapscallions is finally upon us! Saturday 27 April at The Old Church on the Hill. The Nightporters formed as a group in 1993 and have continued with the same stable line-up to the present day. Their home base is South Devon in the South West of England - a tourist based region with no particular music scene or musical heritage. Isolated from the mainstream Blues scene of London and other British cities, The Nightporters have gradually developed a unique sound all of their own.

All four members of the band have a mutual interest in blues, 1950s Americana and British R&B. Like most British kids of the same age, they had grown up listening to Ska / Two-Tone, the early 80s Rockabilly stuff and good time Punk Rock! This, naturally, has had some bearing on their chosen musical direction. The Nightporters rapidly became a popular attraction in the pubs and clubs of the South West but national recognition grew following a showcase appearance at The Great British RnB Festival, Colne, Lancashire in 1996. In 1997, The Nightporters recorded their first radio session for the Paul Jones Blues Show on Radio 2. Their electrifying stage performances were now the talk of the British blues scene.

Their first CD "Feelin' Good" was recorded in just four days at Sawmills Studio, Cornwall. This "retro" style studio had become very popular with a younger generation of British guitar bands. Oasis, Stone Roses and Supergrass had all recorded there, to name but a few. An eight track album of non-originals, "Feelin' Good" was released on the Wang label in the summer of 1997. By now, the band had given up their day jobs. Europe beckoned when "Feelin' Good" became a surprise top selling Blues CD in Belgium. During 1998, The Nightporters toured constantly. They were now a headline act at many European Festivals.

In 1999, The Nightporters signed a long term world-wide album deal with Indigo Records, thereby securing their position as one of the UK's premier Blues acts. The "Rollercoaster" CD was released on 20th September 1999 to critical acclaim. It was recorded at Applestone Studios, Torquay, Devon between January and March of that year. The CD contains thirteen tracks, six of which are original compositions. Special guests on the album were Ben Waters, who played piano on three tracks and Johnny Dyke, who played Hammond B3 organ.

For those familiar with the British blues scene of the 1990s, The Nightporters and The Big Combo are not unfamiliar names. Guitar player and singer Vince Lee has been a mainstay on the South West music scene for decades. In 1996 he formed The Big Combo, a band that has almost become legendary in the Cornwell area. Bassist Al Wallis was all this time on his side. The Nightporters were a band who at the time was a guarantee for an evening of "fun" of the highest order. But in 2002, at the highlight of the band and after a very succesful tour in Canada, they split up.

Around 2003 Lee and Wallis came together with Martin Vowles (guitar) en Kevin Crowe (drums) of the Nightporters and they formed The Wildcards, a 4 piece band with a a combination of deep blues, West Coast swing, rockabilly, surf, boogie, jump and jive, rock 'n roll. Already in 2004, they threw their debut album 'On Fire' on the market. In 2006 they toured with Gary Primich and they had plans to do this all over again in 2007 but Primich's unexpected death prevented a new tour. 2007 followed with the successful second album "Raising Hell", full of good songs with a blistering rendition of 'St James Infirmary' and posthumously dedicated to Gary Primich.

In 2010, they delivered their third shoot "When The Moon Shines Bright"; nasty, horny and gritty are the keys to this album. Again a great mix of various styles, rockabilly, hints of reggae and ska, rhythm & blues, West Coast jump and even a touch of surf. In 2008 Vince Lee had met his partner Becca Langsford and since then they have performed together in various band settings. He produced and played most of the instruments on Becca's debut album 'Big Surprise' in 2011. Martin Vowles and Kevin Crowe returned to the re-established Nightporters for a one time European tour and in 2014 they joined female harmonica player Dana Dixon and the Big Kats.

b. Mahalia Lucille Jenkins, 23 June 1938, Bolton, Mississippi, USA. Spann sang gospel to start with, both in Mississippi and later in Chicago, where she lived in her early teens. In the 60s, she met the great blues pianist Otis Spann, and they began a musical partnership and later married. They recorded together, but tragically their collaboration came to an end with Otis’ early death in 1970. Lucille continued to work in music and made a number of further recordings.

Mojo Blues Band is centered around Erik Trauner, representing a music community of musicians who are passionate for the blues, and they have made the exotic language of the blues to their own. Comparitive to a second hand mother language with all their dialects are the traditional Chicago Blues just as well as swinging R&B and rolling boogie woogie.

The band attempts to create a homogeneous sound. Not the endless soloing of the individual musician, but the question/answering dialogue between the instruments, have priority. A concert with the Mojo Blues Band is always a dynamic suspenseful, hot to cold tub of feelings, with humor in between.

Although the respect towards the endless idols of the Blues, like Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed, Sonny Boy Williamson or T-Bone Walker, the most important thing is to find your own musical path. Blues is not only a form of music, it is the expression of a life style. That is the opinion of Erik Trauner who says, "It's all about developing your own handwriting, there is no room for jiving. If you have not lived you have nothing to tell. Like fine wine, the older we get, the better we get."

We only discovered Misty Blues Band; and their enigmatic singer Gina Coleman three years ago; but they’ve been going a lot longer as this magnificent 25th Anniversary celebration proves.
Most acts would cobble together some form of Greatest Hits package; but not the prolific Ms Coleman …. we get another 11 new songs for our delectation, and as usual it’s ‘all killer – no filler!’
The album opens with Gina crooning Seduction By The Blues over a haunting harmonica, making it sound like a Gospel Song of sorts, and maybe it is; then halfway through the band kick in with a vengeance …. the drumming is like a missile strike, the guitar – a machine gun and the saxophone is a musical instrument of mass destruction all of its own!
Thankfully things slow down again for track #2, the soulicious title track, Silver Lining where Gina makes her voice bounce around the octaves in a way I don’t think I’ve ever heard before, and at one stage guitarist Early Times channels his inner Prince on a scary solo.
Obviously there’s a clue in the bands name, Misty Blues Band that tells you that these cats (and kitten) are a Blues Band; but after all these years they know when and how to add Soul, Funk and even Boogie to the package while never diverting to far from yer actual Blues, 21st century stylee.
For such a prolific songwriter Gina Coleman can still take a universal theme and turn it into something dynamic and even fascinating, which is where I will direct you to Enough Loving For Two, The Upper Hand and the mellifluous Nothing’s In Vain (Steve Beastie’s Song) which nicely dips gently into Aretha territory.
A few months ago Gina sent me a copy of her son and resident drummer, Diego Mongue’s latest album under his own name and I liked it a lot; so was nicely surprised to see a collaboration between the Mother and Son here on the co-write Blues Never End a neat blend of olde American Blues and charming African rhythms while Gina virtually chants the chorus like a Queen.
As regular fans will be pleased to hear; there’s still plenty of classic Rhythm and Blues here to satisfy even the most pedantic of her followers; with Shake These Blues and the swinging How Will I? Taking us on very satisfying journeys at opposite ends of the contemporary spectrum.
To some degree I could stick a pin into the track listing and pick a song that I could argue was ‘my Favourite,’ sizzling Sofrito My Blues is a prime example; but there are also another two very special songs here; or at least I think so.
Chasing Gold, featuring Matt Cusson adding some extra special keyboards to the already heady mix, is the type of song when played live could easily stretch for ten minutes or more and they would go by in the blink of an eye.
The other, That’s My Cross that felt like a punch to the heart the first time I heard it as it could easily have ben written about an experience I had in my life several years ago; and I guess will resonate with many other listeners too; which more or less tips the balance for it to become my Favourite Song on a really special album.
A ‘special album’ it indeed is; it would be all too easy for a band like this to go through the motions and use some kind of template for an album 25 years after forming; but that certainly doesn’t apply at all as this is as exciting and interesting as if it was their collective debut album.
