The Juke Joints - Going To Chicago

Album: Going To Chicago
Size: 120,3 MB
Time: 51:33
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2010
Styles: Harmonica blues, rocking blues
Art: Full

1. This Is It (3:05)
2. Magic Shoes (2:54)
3. Stax Sound (3:20)
4. Goodbye Baby (4:22)
5. Two Hearts (4:35)

7. Bad Bad Feeling (5:50)
8. Time Will Tell (4:13)
9. Strollin' On Lincoln Av. (4:20)
10. Addicted To The Blues (3:17)
11. Rock My Soul (3:18)
12. Make A Stand (Feat. Ana Popovic) (3:03)
13. Going To Chicago (Feat. Ronnie Baker Brooks & Eddy 'The Chief' Clearwater) (5:24)

When Juke Joints' lead singer and drummer Peter Kempe visited the 2008 Chicago Blues Festival, he was so impressed with Eddie "The Chief" Clearwater's performance there, that he simply had to have a word with him after his show. This resulted in an invitation to their Kwadendamme Blues Festival in 2009. Eddy fired on all cylinders and The Juke Joints excelled as his backing band. This cooperation led to mutual enthusiasm, more shows around Europe and the determination to record together as soon as possible.

The contact with Eddy Clearwater, whose latest album "West Side Strut" was recorded in the Rax Trax Studios with renowned producer Ronnie Baker Brooks, opened up the doors to that same studio for The Juke Joints and in June 2010 they made the long-awaited trip to the home of the blues, Chicago. There they recorded what surely must be The Juke Joints' magnum opus, with a collection of songs that of course includes plenty of the high energy rhythm 'n' blues, and shuffles and boogies that have earned them so much praise. However, there are also ventures up, until now, un-trodden paths.

Stand out tracks include "Stax Sound", which has that inimitable Stax soul groove that Peter Kempe experienced when visiting the legendary Stax studio. There is a heartbreaking ballad, "Goodbye Baby", with some beautiful acoustic guitar and driven on by a massive Hammond organ sound, a track that will no doubt enthuse large, lighter-toting audiences. Guitarist Michel Staat shows his wizardry in the enthralling slow blues "Bad Bad Feeling", and "Strollin' On Lincoln Avenue" is a jazzy instrumental, highlighting Sonnyboy van den Broek's awesome talents on the chromatic harp.

Female blues guitar slinger Ana Popovic shines on slide guitar on "Make A Stand" which evokes fond memories of John Lee Hooker. Absolutely top-notch is the closing track "Going To Chicago", written by Ronnie Baker Brooks especially for this album, with Eddy Clearwater really letting loose on electric guitar. Producer Ronnie Baker Brooks belts out some great guitar solos here as well, and provides solid support on vocals and rhythm guitar. A highly diverse album it has become indeed, which should win The Juke Joints global recognition as one of the most energetic rock rollin' blues bands around.

Dutch blues-rockers and winners of the 2012 Dutch Blues Foundation Award for Best Dutch Blues Band have been setting fire to international stages for no fewer than 32 years. Last year alone has seen them firing away in, amongst others, Spain, Norway, Switzerland and at the legendary Harvest Time Blues Festival in Ireland. That is why the title of their new studio album has been so aptly chosen: ‘Heart on Fire’, which is exactly what they have been doing all these years, setting hearts on fire. On their 9th studio album the masters of rock rollin blues have like never before succeeded in translating the steamingly hot energy of their live shows into a brilliant studio sound.

‘Heart on Fire’ contains 10 infectious Juke Joints originals. The rhythm section, consisting of drummer and vocalist Peter Kempe and bass player Derk Korpershoek, provides their customary fireproof foundation, Michel Staat steers his guitar increasingly outside oft-trodden paths and Sonnyboy van den Broek continuously pokes up the fire with his tighter than tight harmonica prowess. The Dr Ross classic Cat’s Squirrel and crowd favourite-to-be Funny Little Valentine, penned by Australian rockabilly singer/guitarist Louis King, receive the passionate, greasy Juke Joints treatment and seamlessly fit in the coherence of the album. The album was recorded in the Westmaas Studios in Holland and was produced by René van Broekhoven and The Juke Joints. It includes guest appearances by Roland Bakker (Julian Sas Band) on piano & keyboards and Ben van den Dungen on saxophone.

A Juke Joint is an Afro-Americans, often clandestine, organized establishment where, until the first half of the twentieth century, black bluesmen entertain a drink and dance audience with boogie and blues. Besides Barrelhouse, the Zeeland combo The Juke Joints took their name from these often infamous tents.

I once saw them play in a dismantled radiators factory, a youth club, a brown pub. In addition to a permanent place at the festival in their home port Kwadendamme, The Juke Joints visited the stages of almost all Dutch and Belgian blues festivals as well as the large and medium-sized events in Europe and even in the US. In the musical cradle they searched their roots in Memphis and Chicago.

The Juke Joints have been 'on the road' for 35 years and that was celebrated at the end of last year in a packed De Piek in Vlissingen with a steaming concert. Meanwhile, the Zeeland blues rockers form a tightly operating team. From behind his drum kit singer Peter Kempe sends his hard-working companions through a solid rocking on boogie and blues grafted repertoire. Kempe is not exactly the most talented singer, the combination with energetic drumming is not evident, but the unbridled effort in combination with contributions from guitarist Michel State and the solid bass beat by Derk Kopershoek make up for it.

The performances of harmonicaman Sonnyboy vd Broeck form a decisive part of the Juke Jointssound from the beginning. A solid intro with his own work forms a run-up to the Born In Chicago, known by Paul Butterfield. Those rhythmic harp shoots on a tightly rocked underground strongly remind of those other 'bad boys of the blues', The Nighthawks. Incidentally, they are conceived with a flashy interpretation of Backstabbin 'Woman.

The great musical hero of Kempe remains Rory Gallagher, during the interpretation of Bullfrog Blues Peter strums on the mandolin. For Out On The Western Plain a traditional of Ledbetter that the Irish guitarist adopted at the time, the drum kit is pushed aside again and in the haunting marshy areas of Louisiana Do not Give It Up girded Sonnyboy the pouch and we stay on the side shores of the Mississippi with scorched slides on a soggy boogiebeat in Let It Roll.

The guitarist goes extensively in the long drawn-out instrumental squeezer Nataly The steamy bass used Stax Sound refers to an inspiring visit by The Juke Joints to Memphis with soulfully colored string slicks and unison debut harmonica shoots. Then effortlessly switched to sultry Chicago blues with pointed strings.

This live registration, which has been awarded for 35 years of hard work, forms an excellent overview of The Juke Joints, the energetic outsider in Dutch blues rock. (Google translation)

I was first introduced to the music of ”The Juke Joints” back in 1995 when their album ”Tin House” arrived to me at the radio station. I was immediately impressed by both the quality and selection of music contained on that CD and the following week I played a couple of tracks from it on my show. On this new album ”Live in Ireland” all styles of blues are represented, from the acoustic Big Bill Broonzy´s ”Bankers Blues”and ledbelly´s ” Out On The Western Plain”, both firm favourites of Rory Gallagher and ”Going To My Hometown” on which Peter Kempe, the band´s lead vocalist, steps out from behind the drums to play the mandolin.

The Juke Joints have recorded three live albums so far, and five studio albums, and now this, their latest, was recorded in my country Ireland! Although they have toured Ireland several times, it was only this year on their 4th trip to Ireland, with lots of their loyal fans travelling with them, that they finally made it to JJ Smyth´s, Dublin´s ”home of the blues”, where to of the tracks for this project were recorded and indeed my first time to see them live. I knew it was going to be a great night of blues, that night last March when they opened up with ”The Blues Had A Baby”, the Kilkenny version is on this CD, other recordings took place in Myrtleville, Youghal and Midleton. The opener ”Soul On Fire” is a new original that swings along, Boogie Mike contributing a fine guitar solo as does Sonnyboy on the harmonica, good solid bassguitar too from Peter van Merode and check out the Zydeco flavoured original ”Don´t Give It Up” with Sonnyboy this time switching to the accordion that he bought in Dublin. Well if you´ve been sitting down, which I doubt, while this CD´s been playing in the background, ”My Baby” is sure to have you up dancing, as will Dave Alvin´s ”So Long Baby, Goodbye”, the closing track on the album. Of course all you Juke Joint fans know that the best way to enjoy their music is to see them perform live ~ Charlie Hussey.

20 years of Juke Joints, 20 years of Rock Rolling blues, 20 years of setting stages on fire all over the world, that calls for a suitable celebration. There´s the release of this double CD plus the release of the DVD of their thunderous concert at the Moulin Blues Festival in Holland, May 2002!
Disc 2 of this double CD is an exquisite survey of the 20 years in which these ambassadors of Dutchblues, still led out by the original members Peter Kempe (lead vocals/drums/mandolin) and ”Sonnyboy” van der Broek (harmonica/vocals/accordion), have been conquering the world.

The present line-up also includes Michel ”Boogie Mike” Staat on lead guitar and Peter ”Repete” van Merode on bass. It was nearly 10 years ago that the band managed to create a succesful breakthrough on the other side of the Atlantic. This initiated a host of invitations to renowned festivals, on which they shared stages with BB King, Bonnie Raitt, Dr. John, Little Feat, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Walter Trout and many other luminaries of the blues.
So far the band has released 9 albums, 4 of which are live CD´s. From each album those tracks have been selected that best capture the specific atmo-
sphere of that album. As the band has gathered it´s impressive reputation and ditto fanbase first and foremost from their fiery and highly energetic live perfor-
mances, it is a small wonder that indeed 9 tracks have been culled from 3 of the live albums. Of course concert staples like ”Betty Lee”, ”Shake It” and ”Out On The Western Plain” have not been omitted. And surely the two tracks form their highly sought after debut (LP only!) ”Dancing Shoes” are a real treat!
Disc 0 is an exclusive bonus CD, containing 7 exuberant live tracks that reflect memorable performances with special guests like Willy Foster, Mark Wenner of the Nighthawks and with a amazing Big Band (most of these tracks were never before released). This disc closes with a unique performance of their crowdplea-
ser, inspiration Rory Gallagher´s ”Going To My Hometown” in a studio in the Irish town of Kilkenny, followed by a highly entertaining interview with their host.
”Juke Joints 20 Years” is a most valuable document of a band that has created it´s very own synthesis of blues and rock and roll, an absolute must for their many fans and an impressive introduction for those who aren´t yet but no doubt will be soon. ~Bert van Kessel
