The late Brian Knight was one of the most respected and important figures in British blues history. He was an influential vocalist, slide guitarist, harmonica player and founding member of The Rolling Stones. In the early '60's Brian met Brian Jones on West London's blues circuit. Jones was forming a band, and asked Knight to sing. Geoff Bradford joined the line-up on guitar along with pianist Ian Stewart, bassist Dick Taylor (later of The Pretty Things) and a succession of drummers. It was the beginning of The Rolling Stones.

"Good Time Down The Road" was Brian's first solo album, recorded after he'd spent several years away from the UK Blues/R&B circuit. He teamed up with a strong studio band for the album including session guitarist Jon McLoughlin, bassist Ray Bailey and drummer Steve Bray. "Good Time Down the Road" features original material mixed with some "no frills" cover versions of standard blues tracks like "High Heel Sneakers," "Hoochie Coochie Man," "My Babe," and "Meet Me at the Bottom."

Despite receiving good reviews the album only made a minor impact due to bad timing problems by record distributors. It is sad that Brian never got the credit he deserved. On his trademark copper topped guitars, he was innovative in his guitar technique, and was one of Britain's greatest slide players. The 2003 CD re-issue includes four live tracks recorded with guitarist Toni Vines, at the 1995 Buxton Alexis Korner Memorial Concert.

Saga Blues is a 50-album collection that proposes an incredibly varied journey through this inheritance, and it goes out to meet all the creators, styles and temples of Mecca that have made this music so rich for over one hundred years, music today recognized for its universal power of attraction.

The aim of the collection is to decline this eclecticism by means of two album categories: on the one hand, recordings devoted to the artists who contributed to write the history of this music; and on the other, anthologies (often unexpected), that are centered on regional trends, instruments or specific schools, and the great themes attached to the blues repertoire.

In this second domain, Saga Blues explores the blues’ talents for telling everyday stories in offering a brand-new, often moving portrait of America in the first half of the 20th century. We begin by taking an interest in the first Black song minstrels (The Songsters Tradition – Before the Blues), before moving on to explore the privileged ties linking the former-slave community with the Amerindians (Cherokee Boogie – Indians and the Blues).

We visit the plantations where tenant-farmers continued to be unfairly exploited long after the slaves had gone (Plantation Blues – Cotton Patch and Tobacco Belt Blues), and pursue our wanderings through the Old South (Traveling Man – A Blues Travel Guide), halting in New Orleans, where blues with more rhythm to it made its appearance after the war (New Orleans Rhythm & Blues – Good Rockin’ Tonight), before moving on again, in the company of itinerant harmonica-players, along the natural way leading from the Delta to the great industrial cities of the Midwest (Harmonica Blues – Blowing from Memphis to Chicago).

Rules are there to be broken. Expectations are there to be defied. Glass ceilings are there to be shattered. Having spent the past decade carving out her own unique space in the male-dominated world of blues-rock, Ally Venable’s combative sixth album, Money & Power, demands more of both – for herself, for women around the world, and for anyone else who thought they weren’t worthy of a seat at the table. “Money & Power is such a strong statement, especially for women,” says the award-winning Texas gunslinger of her Nashville-recorded new release, on which Ally’s crack-squad band is joined by A-list guests Shemekia Copeland and Christone ‘Kingfish’ Ingram. “All the songs on this album showcase the theme of what it truly means to be a force to be reckoned with. I want this record to wake people up,” continues Ally. Money and power make the world go round. But in the right hands, music can be every bit as potent. Right now, on the heels of 2023’s acclaimed Real Gone – an album that hit #1 on the Billboard Blues Charts and was still in contention a year later – Ally is rated amongst the best young singer-songwriters in American roots, saluted by Total Guitar magazine in its poll of Top 100 Blues Guitarists. “With her heels, sequins and Les Paul growling on a leash, she’s one of Ruf’s most head-turning young artists,” wrote Classic Rock, “and while the instrumental prowess can be taken as read, Real Gone marks a growing maturity in the Texan’s songcraft.” In February 2024, with the dust still settling from Real Gone, the Money & Power sessions saw Ally and producer/drummer Tom Hambridge push through the doors of Nashville’s famous Soundstage Studios. And while the studio band was strictly A-list, as always, Ally’s new songs are the real stars. That attitude is palpable on opener “Brown Liquor,” Ally’s battlecry decorated by a stinging guest guitar solo from the Mississippi hotshot Christone ‘Kingfish’ Ingram. “Maybe Someday” is a blissful moment of redemptive soul, carried along by horns and barbed lyrics aimed at an old flame. Next up is the white-hot title track, with Ally’s guitar set to scorch and a seething message. “Money & Power shouts to the masses,” she explains, “that women are not to be doubted in their ability to thrive in the world.” Vital right to the end, Money & Power plays out with “Stepping Stone’s” earthy roar of empowerment, the shuddering, spooky, tremolo-soaked groove of “Feel That Sting,” and the dust-blown rocker “Unbreakable,” where Ally goes toe-to-toe with New York powerhouse Shemekia Copeland. “That song spreads a message of women that have been oppressed,” she says, “to rise to the occasion and break above it all.” Money & Power is a modern roots record that plays by its own rules and marches to the beat of its own drum. The same could be said for Ally herself. “I’m thrilled to release this album,” she says. “For me, it’s a sonic embodiment of a woman’s unstoppable ambition, and showcases my musicality on all fronts. I’m looking forward to seeing where this one will take me.”

Neil Sadler - Past To Present

8. What Goes Round Comes Around (6:48)
9. 40 Miles Of Bad Road (4:20)
10. Feel Like A Wolf (6:12)
11. No Rush (5:01)

Neil Sadler’s ‘Past To Present’ is a guitar friendly rock-blues compilation album which draws on old and newer material with some re-jigged lyrics. His songs drip with luscious tones framed by imposing sonic landscapes and are shot through with a reflective feel. The album is an extension of the man himself, who for 30 years was a multi-instrumentalist and studio owner and whose production work informed some of Larry Miller’s best work. His guitar playing also brought flair, substance and feel to the likes of Blue Touch, The UK Blues Project and a solo project with Dennis Siggery, on ‘Past To Present’ it is the central driving force. It also frequently occupies the role of a second voice to fill out an number of story telling narratives, an instrumental and autobiographical songs. The latter provides him with the deeply moving album highlight ‘I Ain’t Gonna Cross No River’. It’s a meeting of song-craft, musical excellence and a fine production, on which he resolves to fight with his partner to beat their respective cancer problems. It also provides the outright song quality to match his enveloping soundscapes. A combination of piercing guitar notes and emotive phrasing helps him get inside some heart wrenching lyrics: “I’m not ready for the night to fall, darkness all around, I’m just not ready, I ain’t crossing to the other side, its come too soon, you know I’m just not ready.” This leads into the self affirmative chorus: I ain’t gonna cross no river, I don’t want to see you cry, got to get me a lot of living, baby before I die.” On ‘By The End of The Night’, he switches to a more dirgey drone riff led approach to musically evoke the grip of the blues: “I got the blues its like a deep dark hole,” to which he adds defining line: “by the end of the night you’re gonna know my name.” It’s another example of how his solo attack and different tones draw us into lyrical emotions. Not everything works quite as well. Despite being bathed in shimmering tones and topped by a sumptuous slide leading to an emotive volley of big toned notes, the vocal on ‘No Love Left, No More’ lacks sufficient light and shade to make an emotional connection with the lyrics. No matter; Sadler’s musical versatility makes ‘Past To Present’ a fine rock-blues album which balances subtlety with bluster. He adventurously veers from atmospheric rock-blues towards some anthemic moments, full of wide ranging tones in a locked-in layered production. The broken relationship song ‘You Ain’t Gonna Get Me Next Time’, opens with echo laden dobro, brush stroke percussion and a contrasting shrill guitar tone. The autobiographical ‘A Bad Case of Company Blues’ gives him room to pair acoustic and electric guitar with a gritty vocal, on a bluesy stomp which recalls the end of his rock and roll dream and settling for a day job. ‘Past To Present’ has an essential flow which is built on a willingness to experiment with sounds and arrangements which give the album a vibrant feel. When you listen to the dobro and slide inflected stomping beat and catchy hook of the celebratory ‘Let Your Hair Down, Honey’, or indeed the grainy toned ZZ Top style intensity and pulverising drums of ‘40 Miles of Bad Road’, you can feel the essential energy of the album. He goes back to his Blue Touch days for a layered version of ‘When The Levee Breaks’, which relies on subtle dynamics rather than a sledgehammer approach. The flinty lyrics of ‘What Goes Round Comes Around’ builds from an acoustic intro via distorted drums and psychedelic squalls into another atmospheric track.Sadler’s forte is the way he seamlessly fuses things together to explore changes in mood and feel within a song which he then presents as a coherent whole.Even on the more prosaic riff driven ‘Feel Like A Wolf’ he pulls out something different. He combines a Howlin’ Wolf vocal snarl with two contrasting solos, the second of which is a searing solo with a rich tone, leading to a distant howl on the outro. The closing instrumental ‘No Rush’, owes much to Gary Moore in terms of tone and arrangement, but the feel is wholly Sadler’s own.His cleverly switches from a clean to a slighty distorted tone on a melodic blues instrumental. His subtle use of vibrato with an effortless touch and tone helps make an emotional connection with the song.Whether the title is a Zen like declaration or simply inviting us to smell the roses, only Neil will know. He leaves us to make our own choices. What is self evident is that his heartfelt singing, fluid guitar playing, interwoven tones and honest song-writing is an admirable representation of what makes a very good rock-blues album.

You might hear the tunes of the Misery Mountain Boys drifting from behind a rotating bookcase of a 1930’s speakeasy. Harkening back to a simpler time, the MMB’s create a collaborative soundscape infused with tongue in cheek wit, playfulness, and nostalgia. With a mix of catchy originals and contemporary songs reimagined in driving swing, the band’s performance delivers as both classic and fresh, offering a generous variety of sweaty jazz numbers, velvety love songs, and swingin' jump-blues.

Born in the remote, river-laced hills of Northern Alberta (Peace River to be exact), the Misery Mountain Boys is the black sheep brainchild of frontman Steven Gevenich. Through its iterations, the band has been delivering top quality musicianship and a high energy performance for over 12 years. Walking bass lines (Daniel Watson), shuffling drums (Ethan Markwart), meandering clarinet & saxophone (Joe Semple), and Gevenich’s own skillful jazz/blues guitar and gentle, gravely voice form the musical landscape of the Misery Mountain Boys.

Born and raised in Wikwemikong First Nation, on Manitoulin Island, in Northern Ontario, Crystal Shawanda was introduced to the blues by her eldest brother and to old-time country by her parents. “I was also into other styles of music that led me to the blues,” she says, citing everything from Elvis Presley’s “Hound Dog,” written by Big Mama Thornton, to R&B-pop star Monica’s “Misty Blue,” by Dorothy Moore. And yet Crystal’s first foray as a professional singer was in country music, not blues. She was in her early 20s and had immediate success after signing a U.S. record deal with RCA Nashville. 2008’s Dawn of a New Day, featuring the single “You Can Let Go,” reached No. 1 on the Canadian Country Album chart and No. 16 on the Billboard Top Country Albums, the highest charting album by a full-blooded Canadian Indigenous country artist (in the SoundScan-era).

The following year she left the label and created her own, New Sun Records. Her first release was the holiday album I’ll Be Home For Christmas. Her next country album was 2010’s Just Like You, which won a 2013 Juno Award for Best Aboriginal Album, before she made the change to the blues with 2014’s The Whole World’s Got The Blues. Two years later, in quick succession, came 2016’s Fish Out of Water and 2017’s Voodoo Woman, then recognition as a bonafide blues talent with 2020’s Church House Blues, which won the 2021 Juno Award for Best Blues album.

Their house-rockin' shows feature original material in a variety of styles. And, of course, no blues show is complete without a few tunes by such blues greats as Stevie Ray Vaughan, B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Little Walter, Buddy Guy, Paul Butterfield, Albert Collins, Jonny Lang, Little Charlie & the Nightcats to name just a few.

They put Blues Plate Special together in 1995 and have been doin' their best to keep the blues alive and well in the Southern Tier of New York State ever since.

Matt Schofield Trio - Many Moons Vol. 1

British Blues Hall of Fame guitarist Matt Schofield spends a lot of time running masterclass workshops on both sides of the Atlantic. So it’s no surprise that his latest release, Many Moons Vol. 1, is, in itself, a masterclass in blues guitar. Everything from slow blues, through shuffles to blistering solos, this album is a must-have blueprint for the modern blues player. Schofield, who is ranked among the top 10 British blues guitarists of all time, launched his tenth album with a deliberately stripped-down trio. The title reflects the fact that it’s been 20 years since his first record came out and “many moons” since he’s worked with the original trio of Jonny Henderson on Hammond B3 organ and Evan Jenkins on drums.

Speaking about the album, Schofield told Blues Rock Review, “For me and a lot of my fans there’s nothing quite like the chemistry between me, Jonny and Evan. So I wanted to revisit that because we haven’t done a record in a long time with that lineup.” He pointed out that the album is pure trio, with guitar, organ, drums and singing. “It’s just us, as if we were playing live, but we recorded it in Peter Gabriel’s studio, Real World, over a few days. The room has an amazing ambient sound and that sound is all over this record,” he added. Schofield isn’t wrong – the production value of the album is first-rate. “I’m pretty happy with this record and I don’t always love my own recordings. It’s the hardest thing for me because I am an improviser and you have to accept that, once the track is down, this is the version.”

During the discussion with BRR, Schofield pointed out that a lot of contemporary blues guitarists come from his era. “Me, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, John Mayer, Eric Gales, Kirk Fletcher, Joe Bonamassa and Josh Smith, (who has played with both Bonamassa and Schofield) were all born around 1977.” He speculated, “Something happened to create an era of modern blues guitarists. I suspect that the influence of Stevie Ray Vaughan is the unifying factor as he was killed around the time we were coming of age.” On his website, Bonamassa noted, “Matt Schofield is a phenomenal player and should be regarded as such!” Endorsements like that solidify Schofield’s place among those peers and punctuates the importance of his work, including Many Moons Vol. 1. /Bob Liddycot, Blues Rock Review

For years now, Wildmen Bluesband has been working on their way in the Dutch blues scene in a passionate manner. Their repertoire, with many own compositions and a cover now and then, clearly indicates this is not a standard blues band. The way Wildmen Bluesband give their music their own twist, shows great creativity of these five musicians. Just that one extra chord, minor note here, seventh note there, makes Wildmen Bluesband an absolutely unique band within the Dutch blues scene.

During the performances of Wildmen Bluesband, the audience gets a musical spectacle that is unparalleled. With Saskia's clear, flawless voice with a volume that amazes you, she guides her men and certainly the audience through a blistering blues afternoon and/or evening. Together with top guitarist Jos, she is the eye-catcher of the band. With on the other side keyboard magician Ruud and behind her 'Ginger Baker' Rob on drums and 'masterpicker' Mark on bass guitar, the band goes wild in no uncertain way.

With unbridled energy and enthusiasm, the audience is torpedoed, as it were, with all kinds of musical and vocal blues forms. That is an art in itself and also the power that Wildmen Bluesband radiates on stage. Because make no mistake, it is not just 5 musicians making music. They are an exceptionally well attuned, tight unit that carries out their mission with full, visible emotion. As for the repertoire - just go like hell to a Wildmen Bluesband gig to experience what this band does to you.

Personnel: Saskia de Nijs (vocals); Jos de Wilde (guitar); Rob Meijran (drums); Mark van Lieshout (bass); Ruud Vuijk (Hammond, piano).

Busker Si Cranstoun pounded the pavement for 20 years before being literally signed up on the spot by a Warner executive who discovered him performing in the street. Born and raised in Caterham, Surrey, the son of a music promoter, he and his brother Tyber grew up with the sounds of reggae and ska, and as children wrote and performed their own songs for their parents. After graduating from London's prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the brothers formed their own ska band, the Dualers, in 1999.

Starting as a duo before expanding to a full-band lineup, they performed on the streets for several years and toured heavily, eventually building enough of a fan base that their debut single, "Kiss on the Lips," released in 2004, went to number 21 in the U.K. chart. A second single, "Truly Madly Deeply," was released the following year and went to number 23; it was later used on the soundtrack of the romantic adventure film Fool's Gold, starring Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson. The Dualers self-released more than ten albums and toured the U.K. in support of the Blockheads.

Alongside his work in the band, Cranstoun also performed solo; he was once given 30p by British Prime Minister Tony Blair, and even met his future wife while busking on the streets of Croydon. He eventually left the Dualers in 2010 to focus on a solo career, with material heavily influenced by rockabilly, doo wop, and American R&B singers of the '50s and '60s. He self-released several solo albums, building a loyal following among fans of the "vintage" music scene, before being spotted in 2013 by a Warner executive and signed to a million-pound record deal. Dubbed "the new Jackie Wilson," he was booked to play in Las Vegas with Little Richard, and his major-label debut album, Modern Life, dropped in October 2014, peaking at number 30 in the U.K. album chart. /Biography by John D. Terry Hanck - I Still Get Excited

Album: I Still Get Excited

1. I Still Get Excited (4:02)
2. Smooth Tyrone (4:20)
3. Early In The Morning (Feat. Chris Cain) (7:49)
4. Here It Comes (3:33)
5. Come On Back (Feat. Rick Estrin) (5:45)
6. Rosita (5:31)
7. Why People Like That (3:41)
8. Howlin' For My Darlin' (5:34)
9. Spring (Feat. Tracy Nelson) (2:54)
10. Hold It Right There (3:41)
11. Feel So Bad (6:53)

Terry Hanck is a three-time BMA winner for his sax playing and on his latest disc, he demonstrates what a versatile player he is, as the music includes elements of New Orleans, R&B, blues and jazz. Recorded at Kid Anderson’s Greaseland Studio, the disc has five originals and six covers, Terry handling the lead vocals and sax with his regular band plus guests including Rick Estrin, Chris Cain and Tracy Nelson.

The title track leads the way with great rock and roll piano from Jim Pugh and amusing lyrics about getting older but still relishing what life has to offer. In complete contrast, "Smooth Tyrone" tells the tale of a sax player who always steals the girls, Johnny ‘Cat’ Soubrand’s guitar and Terry’s breathy sax adding to the jazzy feel with fine solos. Chris Cain guests on a lengthy treatment of "Early In The Morning", his B.B. King influenced guitar suiting the song with Kid on double bass and Jim switching to organ before three more originals: "Here It Comes" is a mix of early rock and roll with a Mexican border feel; "Come On Back" is an upbeat shuffle with Rick Estrin on harp and the gentle instrumental ballad "Rosita", credited to Terry, Kid and Jim, is the final original.

Tracy Nelson duets with Terry on the country/rock and roll "Spring" and the rest of the album revisits classic tunes. The New Orleans funk of Bobby Charles’ "Why People Like That" gets a minor lyrical update with reference to stealing “your laptop and phone”. Howling Wolf’s "Howlin’ For My Darlin" is terrific with Terry and Cat playing the core riff in unison, Eddie ‘Cleanhead’ Vinson’s "Hold It Right There" adds an R&B dimension and Lightnin’ Hopkins’ "Feel So Bad" closes the album in fine style with plenty of space for Terry to blow his sax. Plenty to enjoy here for fans of classic blues and R&B and a likely contender for the end of the year ‘Best Of’ lists. /John Mitchell, Blues Matters

“Parisian Mambo” is the second LP by “Cecilya & the Candy Kings”. The entire album is a tribute to the city of Paris, which has made the Catalan singer grow musically since she settled in the capital of love. The 11 songs on the album will take you back to the 50s by the hand of a woman with a powerful and luminous voice committed to the causes of her time.

The lyrics of Cecilya not only speak of love and celebration as rhythm and blues did at that time. They also speak of dreams (broken or not), internal struggles, healing, emigration, her native Mediterranean, the luck of being a free woman, the superficiality of the world we live in and the nostalgia for better times.

The music, signed Rodolphe Dumont, has been produced in detail to enhance the personal universe of Cecilya. Retro soundscapes and catchy melodies will take listeners back to the days of Elvis and Marilyn Monroe. "Parisian Mambo" captures the essence of Golden Age rhythm and blues - a blend of blues, rock and roll, boogie-woogie, mambo and more.

Personnel: Cecilya Mestres (vocals); Rodolphe Dumont (guitar); Sax Gordon (saxophone); Olivier Cantrelle (piano); Abdell B. Bop (double bass); Denis Agenet (drums).

I owe 99% of how I learned to play from Gary Smith, the Godfather of the South Bay Area blues scene. Gary took the time to show me the how-to's and the don't-do's of the Blues harmonica, along with the approach to the music I love.I also spent a lot of time going to see Charlie Musselwhite everywhere he played in the Bay Area. I finally got the nerve to ask him for a private lesson (I really was wrapped around the axle on third position) and imagine my surprise when he said “yes” and showed up at my parent’s house. Charlie patiently played guitar to my caterwauling harp until those 3rd position mechanics started to sync in. I'm forever grateful for that time with one of my true heroes. Charlie continues to inspire me to this day. People who strongly influenced my musical direction were Paul Butterfield, Muddy Waters, Charlie Musselwhite, Lee Oscar, The Band (Levon Helm), Robert Montes and Bob Gomes. Robert and Bob are childhood friends who were playing music in bands way before I started playing. Their band Jackson Street Band (w/ Dave Gonzales) opened up regularly for the touring bands coming through the Bay Area. Through them, I was able to hang out stage-side to Freddie King, Albert King, Albert Collins and many, many, more. LOT'S of great nights at the BODEGA, Campbell! A up close musical education I would not trade for anything.

The 1980's and Joshua's Blue Monday Parties During the early 1980’s I formed my own band, Bar-B-Q Barnes and the Rib-Tones. We had a regular slot at JOSHUA'S, San Jose. It was a downstairs venue and always had a pretty big crowd. We also had an on-going slot at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz. The band featured Hap Scott on bass and vocals (rest in peace, Hap), Larry Calley on lead guitar (Larry, I miss you're playing!), rock solid Robert Montes on drums, Bob Gomes on the B3 and Sid Morris on piano. That was a damn good band if I say so myself. A B3 with Leslie and a stand-up piano. What a sound and what an aching back every single gig was like moving an apartment! For a number of gigs, I was able to get Sonny Lane and Johnny Waters to come in from Oakland. For the 2nd Fountain Blues Festival in San Jose, Sonny helped me enlist Francis Clay (Muddy Waters Band, James Cotton Band) and Luther Tucker (Little Walter Band, James Cotton Band.) The night they played with my band at Joshua's was like "Fathers and Sons". God, I was thrilled. Both Francis and Luther were easy going, no airs despite their legacies, and real gentlemen.

Sonny Lane and I became close friends. It wasn't until you get to an age where one starts to look back and reminisce that I realized what Sonny had done for me by getting these guys to play with my novice ass and allowing me to be on stage with them. I'm forever grateful Sonny. You really are royalty. I also performed as “The Duo” with Greg Hartman. Simplified and easy. A guitar and harp. Greg is a purveyor of the "Piedmont" style of guitar playing and sing's with a mature. Playing with Greg stretched me to expand my harp playing and to play music that could be said was obscure at that time, but is front and center right now.

Vinyl and CD's In 1980, I had the pleasure to cut a 45 with my own songs, “Blues for Breakfast” and Close Call”, on my own label Rib-Tone Records. This session included the great Little Willie Littlefield on piano (Google him!), Ron Thompson on vocals and slide, Junior Watson on guitar, Bill Stuve on bass and Robert Montes on drums. Little Willie Littlefield held court at the Red Stag in San Jose taking requests and covering a lot of Nat King Cole standards. I doubt any of the patrons were aware of his true stature in the music world. I spent time chauffeuring Little Willie to many of his gigs and we became good friends. I learned some valuable insights into the music business as well as an appreciation for his outlandish behavior. He was chief character amongst a cadre of characters! A couple of years later, more vinyl, an EP called “Bar-B-Q Barnes and the Rib-Tones” with more original songs. Once again Robert on drums, Junior on guitar, Bill on bass and the addition of Sonny Lane on guitar, Bob Gomes on B3, Hap Scott on vocals and the legendary Mark Naftalin on piano. (God, I love that piano and B3 combination.... )

I have remained friends with Mark. My wife and I traveled to Cleveland when he was inducted into the 2015 Rock‘N Roll Hall Of Fame along with the other members of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. It was Mark, who let me use one of his drawings for the cover art and cd title for “Bald Guy With A Lot On His Mind”. The 2014 "Hyde and Seek" Project includes reworking of songs from the New Orleans great, Alan Toussaint/Lee Dorsey, some Gospel classics, and even a rocker (“Ain’t Not Rest For The Wicked” Cage The Elephant) that I wanted to rework with a Gospel approach. The session featured Earl Thomas, Lady Bianca (Sly and the Family Stone, Frank Zappa, Van Morrison), Ron Thompson (John Lee Hooker band leader), Rev. Paul Smith (Ike & Tina Turner, Natalie Cole), Oshmin O. Oden and Winfred Williams.

Present Day Currently I am spending a lot of time focusing on creativity in the studio. The juice for me is in choosing the material and the musicians, going in and exchanging ideas around an original song or reworking a cover into something of our own and then getting it recorded. My recent projects include producing and playing on the “Lady Bianca Sings, Hold On Just A Little While Longer / Gonna Have A Mighty Good Time” digital 45. This was a full on Gospel production and I am very proud to have been involved. In 2020, I released a CD under my own name, “Bald Guy With A Lot On His Mind”. This includes some of my originals and reworking of some wonderful obscure songs form Chuck Berry to Ray Charles. The sessions were done at Greaseland Studios, Hyde Street Studios and Jon Atkinson’s Big Tone Records. They recordings include all the A-Team of the Bay Area: Kid Andersen (Rick Estrin and the Nightcats) , Sid Morris, Johnny Cat Soubrand, June Core (Charlie Musselwhite band), Mike Phillips, Vance Ehlers, Robi Bean, Lauren Halliwell, Kyle Jester and Ron Thompson (R.I.P) The latest project, "A Summer Day At Greaseland" is a Limited Edition 2-Song "Digital 45". Both songs were a collaboration with Mighty Mike Schermer. It doesn't get much better than that. Recorded at Greaseland USA with Mighty Mike on guitar, slide guitar and vocals on "Hatin' On Love", Dennis Dove on drums and vocals on "See What I'm Sayin' ", Kid Andersen on bass (yes, I said bass!), Chris Burns on piano, clavinet and Fender Rhodes. Lisa Leuschner Andersen adds some killer vocals to "See What I'm Sayin' ". That brings us to today and I'm still striving to make and play legitimate roots music.

Led by guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Donnie "Mr. Downchild" Walsh, the Downchild Blues Band is the premier blues band in Canada. Their saxophone-driven jump blues provided a major inspiration for Dan Aykroyd and the late John Belushi's Blues Brothers, who included Walsh's tunes "Everything I Need (Almost)" and "Shotgun Blues" on their 1978 debut album, Briefcase Full of Blues. Formed in 1969 by Walsh and his brother, Richard "Hock" Walsh, the Downchild Blues Band endured continuous personnel turnover. More than 18 musicians came and went, including Gene Taylor, who went on to play with the Fabulous Thunderbirds, and Kenny Neal, who joined after leaving the employ of Buddy Guy and relocating to Toronto.

Conflict between the Walsh brothers resulted in Hock Walsh being fired from the band shortly before work began on their third album in 1974. Although he returned to work with the band in 1977 and 1985, his hard-living caught up with him on February 1999 when he succumbed to an apparent heart attack. Since the early '90s, the Downchild Blues Band has benefited from a more stable lineup. Vocalist/songwriter Chuck Jackson, who joined in 1990, received a Maple Blues Award as Best Male Vocalist of 1999 and a Blues with a Feeling Award from the Toronto Blues Society for his "achievements during a distinguished career."

A former member of '60s rock band Rhinoceros, Michael Fonfara received a Maples Blues Award in 2000 as Piano/Keyboards Player of the Year. Mike Fitzpatrick has played drums with Big Joe Turner, Sonny Rhodes, Hubert Sumlin, and Bob Margolin and has recorded with such blues artists as Snooky Pryor and B.B. Odom. Gary Kendall, who played bass on the band's earliest recordings, returned after a 12-year break, during which he booked concerts at Toronto blues club the Silver Dollar. The recipient of a Toronto Blues Society Blues with a Feeling Award in 1993, he received Maple Blues Awards as Bass Player of the Year in 1997, 1999, 2000, and 2002.

The signature sound of the Downchild Blues Band continues to emanate from saxophone player Pat Carey. A member of the band since 1985, Carey previously worked with the Winnepeg Symphony, the Jimmy King Golden Boy Brass, Tony Faim & the Dukes, and Richard "Hock" Walsh. In addition to providing horn arrangements for such Canadian artists as Jack DeKeyzer, Big Daddy G, Sonny Fournier, and Chuck Jackson & the All Stars, he has recorded with Rita Chiarelli, Fathead, the Unity Band, Danny Brooks, and Curley Bridges. The recipient of a Maple Blues Award as Horn Player of the Year in 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002, he recorded the album Starlight with his group, Pat Carey's Jazz Navigators.

Raised in Northern Ontario, where their parents ran a resort hotel, Donnie and Richard "Hock" Walsh relocated to Toronto in their teens. Together with the Downchild Blues Band, they recorded one of the first independent albums to be released in Canada. Recorded in two nights in a small makeshift studio at Rochdale College, the album, titled Bootleg, was picked up for distribution by RCA Victor and re-released in Canada and Japan. Their second album, Straight Up, released in 1974, included the band's only hit, a reworking of Joe Turner's "Flip, Flop and Fly." /Biography by Craig Harris, AllMusic

StratCat Willie Hayes is an old-school bluesman who has been writing and playing for over sixty years. Some of his earliest influences included T-Bone Walker, Mike Bloomfield, B.B. King, Johnny Winter, and Duke Robillard.

In 1995, after several years of gigging in local clubs and fronting many cover bands, his affinity for and love of the blues led him to form a band that would allow him to focus exclusively on the blues. “Blues Plate Special” was a harmonica driven blues band that covered everyone from Little Charlie & the Nightcats to the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, as well as writing and recording original songs.

With Blues Plate Special, he worked hard to keep the blues alive in the Southern Tier of New York, recording three studio albums along with one live album. In 2019, in an effort to explore other styles of the blues, he pulled several players together that had been with him for many of those fifty-plus years to form “StratCat Willie & the Strays”.

Tony Holiday has been at the center of a Memphis soul blues revival anchored by a contingent of young, savvy, well-schooled musicians who have a "family-like" attitude and a strong belief in one another. Over the past couple of years, Holiday and his talented young band have been touring hard, taking spells in between to write and record with Producer Eric Corne in Memphis and Los Angeles.

The result is Keep Your Head Up, an album that covers a tremendous amount of territory over eight pithy tracks. It features a nice array of special guests including Eddie 9V, Kevin Burt, Albert Castiglia and Laura Chavez, last year's Blues Music Award winner for 'Guitarist of the Year’.

Throughout the record Holiday demonstrates an impressive command of styles, moving fluidly through Texas, Chicago and hill country Blues with plenty of Memphis soul and even a touch of Afrobeat. He also shows why he's one of the finest harmonica players on the scene today, despite electing not to play the instrument on over half the songs on the album. There's something in the water in Memphis, and Tony Holiday has tapped into it to contribute to an exciting new chapter unfolding in this storied region.

Ray Collins' Hot-Club is without doubt one of Europe's hottest 50's jump-blues bands ever. And after experiencing them, you can say with certainty that they are one of the best in the world. As near a perfect 50's sound as you can get. It's all about swing and rhythm and blues of the highest quality, good-time music with a strong beat.

It's rare that a band of today's lineage is able to generate such an original sound and also manage to capture the spirit of the classic old legends from the 1950s such as Tiny Bradshaw, Joe Houston, Big Jay McNeely, Joe Liggins, Johnny 'Guitar' Watson, Wynonie Harris and Ike Turner & The Kings of Rhythm.

Memphis guitarist Preston Shannon's debut as a bandleader, Break the Ice is a showcase not only for the singer/guitarist's considerable talents, but for his influences as well. Heavily influenced by the Kings, Albert and B.B., Shannon puts down a blazing version of the former's "Crosscut Saw," as well as covering two songs by Jimmy McCracklin (the songwriter who gave B.B. "The Thrill Is Gone"). Truly one of the strongest talents on the modern day Memphis blues scene, Shannon and his band do much to transcend their influences and add an original sound on the 12 songs collected here. ~ Steve Kurutz

Since Charlie Musselwhite planted roots on the West Coast decades ago, San Francisco has evolved into a hotbed of sensational harmonica players, most notably Rick Estrin, Mark Hummel and the late Norton Buffalo. But as most locals already know, there’s a new reed-bender in town, and he’s ready to make a name for himself on a broader scale.

Born in Mumbai, India, and only working as a musician full-time for the past six years or so, Akarsha “Aki” Kumar is the real deal if you love traditional blues harp with an extra dose of originality. As a teen, he studied keyboards and tabla (Indian drums) before picking up a tremolo harmonica, instrument commonly used in popular Hindi music. Now in his mid-30s, Kumar emigrated to the U.S. in 1996 to study software engineering, settling first in Oklahoma City before transferring to San Jose State University, where he earned a degree that landed him a job in the industry.

Aki’s love for the harmonica eventually lead him to the San Jose School of the Blues, where master instructor Dave Barrett quickly turned him onto to the works of Little Walter Jacobs, George “Harmonica” Smith and James Cotton. Kumar burst onto the West Coast scene in 2009, fronting one of the Bay Area’s favorite bands, Tip Of The Top. He now fronts his own tight ensemble and also does service with Little Jonny And The Giants. ~~Marty Gunther

Although they had played together in various combinations for a number of years, it was in early 2014 that the musicians of the Pete Harris R&B All Stars came together as a unit to perform at the Swanage Blues Festival, where, with the addition of young female vocalist Jeradine Hume, they took the festival by storm. Subsequently, they have performed at venues throughout the South of England, building an enviable reputation as an exciting and entertaining live band. The album Live at the Talking Heads was recorded at the Southampton venue on 10th October 2014, with no edits or overdubs, and is a faithful representation of the band’s live performances, combining elements of Uptown Blues, Swing, Funk, And Old- school R&B.
