Various Artists - Blue Bay: Anthology Of San Francisco Bay Blues

As Charlie Musselwhite succinctly put it, 'blues is blues.' It can be the sweet ballad kind, or hard driving Chicago style, or even the low down country type. Whatever the kind, it's contained within this album - the feeling and depth of the blues being played today in the San Francisco Bay Area. For guitarist Hi Tide Harris, these sides are his very first solo efforts. As a member of the John Mayall Band, Harris recorded and toured Europe and Australia in 1974. Tide's guitar playing and singing rank him as one of the finest blues musicians to surface in recent years.

Gary Smith's career began with guitarist Robben Ford in 1970. The following year he formed his first band with bassist Steve Gomes whose solid backing has been a key to the band's success; they have been playing Bay Area clubs ever since. 'Solid Sender' is an instrumental in the vein of Little Walter. It's a showcase stopper that every harp player carries in his bag. Guitarist Ron Thompson was born in Oakland where the records of Jimmy Reed and Muddy Waters first provided him with a basic blues background. 'Blue Chariot,' a Delta influenced acoustic slide piece, is a classic that clearly exemplifies this young guitarist's abilities.

Robert Lowery was born in Shula, Arkansas, near the Louisiana border. His earliest influences were local bluesmen, however, he eventually fell under the influence of Sam Hopkins and Son Jackson. He moved to Oakland in 1956 and is known for his rather uncanny ability to duplicate the sound of Robert Johnson. 'Crossroad Blues' is performed in typical Johnson style, the slide work impeccable, the duplication incredible. Sonny Rhodes has been playing the blues in California since the early 1960s when he moved to Fresno from Smithville, Texas. In Texas, he heard a lot of blues, especially T-Bone Walker who remains Rhodes' deepest influence as a guitarist. 'Keep Holding On' is a Jr. Parker tune that Rhodes first heard in Texas, lending a unique interpretation, and featuring a biting West Coast-style guitar.

Luther Tucker is a veteran of numerous Chicago groups including the bands of Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson, Junior Wells, and James Cotton before finally settling in San Francisco. Born in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1936, Luther Tucker is one of the great lead guitarists in the blues today! 'Mean Old World' goes back to when Tucker worked with the Otis Rush band in Chicago. It has been the wish of these musicians to present this album as a joint effort, a cooperative recording in which the final product is an expression of all involved to be shared by all, and one which transcends commercial consideration and allows each performer his interpretation of the blues. /Excerpt from the liner notes by Tom Mazzolini

An unprecedented collaboration between three generations of the San Francisco Bay Area's blues harp masters - Gary Smith, David Barrett and Aki Kumar.
David Barrett started playing the harmonica at age fourteen. At age sixteen Gary Smith took Barrett as a private student. Smith also introduced Barrett to the local blues jam scene and even invited him to participate is some of the local harmonica blowouts. At age eighteen Barrett was studying music theory in college (De Anza College in Cupertino, California) and started teaching private harmonica lessons at local music stores and institutes in the California Bay Area. Since 2002 he has been teaching at his own School of the Blues in San Jose.
Gary Smith started playing music when he was in junior high school; he played drums and Gary continued to play drums in little garage bands in San Jose multi-ethnic bands, some white guys and some Mexican guys. They played Richie Valens and Buddy Holly stuff and a Jimmy Reed kind of snuck in there too. Smith actually switched to the harmonica in 1968 because blues was having the "blues revival". He was actually playing in blues bands at that point, playing drums. There were no harp players around and Gary got more and more into it. The day he threw away the drumsticks and picked up the harmonica was when he went to see the Monterey Jazz Festival Blues Day in 1968. He saw Muddy and George Smith was the harmonica player. He also met Charlie Musselwhite and Paul Butterfield and this was a turning point in his life. For three decades, San Jose harmonica player Gary Smith has been an influential figure in the San Francisco Bay Area Blues scene. His band was the first to grace the stage at the inaugural San Francisco Blues Festival way back in 1973.
Dynamic frontman & harp player Aki Kumar is a rising star among the next generation of SF Bay Area bluesmen. A master of the amplified Chicago blues sound, Kumar inherits his style from the harp legends of the 1950s and 60s. Aki has a unique voice in the blues, blending elements of blues harmonica pioneers and with a signature sound of his own.

Gary Smith started playing harmonica in his hometown of San Jose in the late 1960s. Charlie Musselwhite, who was by then living in the San Francisco Bay Area, was an early teacher and mentor. In 1969, Smith joined his first blues group. The early '70s marked the beginning years of the Gary Smith Blues Band. One of the best of those groups he put together included Alberto Gianquinto on piano, Mike Watson on guitar, and Steve Gomes on bass. This group headlined the San Francisco Blues Festival in 1973. They also toured Chicago and the mid-West that year, resulting in a three-month layover in Chicago, where Smith absorbed firsthand the flourishing Southside club scene. In 1974, the Gary Smith Band recorded its first record, an EP on Messaround Records, which quickly became a classic and a collector's item. By then, Smith was devoted to the hard, amplified Little Walter style, but by his own admission, his development of a tone would not be fully realized until much later. 'Rick Estrin helped me a lot,' elaborates Smith. 'Cotton was such an influence on everyone, with that big brassy tone, Rick had long picked up on it and taught me that tongue-blocking style. I was gone after that. Not only has Gary Smith become a master of the harmonica, but he has also become a legend both locally and throughout the blues world, where record collectors covet his 1974 EP as a quintessential harp classic. 'Up The Line' is the kind of blues album we have long waited for Gary Smith to record, reuniting original members Mike Watson and Steve Gomes, augmented by guest appearances by Charlie Musselwhite and Nick Graventies, who performs two gritty originals. Up The Line' is your basic tough, straight ahead blues album, the kind that all harmonica fans love. One thing is for sure, this record is a rocket ride!

Gary Smith - 2 albums: Mountain Top West Coast Blues Session Vol 1: Be Careful What You Wish For / Blues For Mr. B

"Over the past several decades, California has emerged as the harmonica blues capitol of the country. With the likes of Rod Piazza, Rick Estrin, Bill Clark, James Harmon, Mark Hummel, and Gary Smith, to name just a few, the West Coast has come to dominate the contemporary harmonica blues scene much like Chicago had in the early '50s and '60s.
