Award-winning Canadian roots music guitarist and songwriter JW-Jones blends the old with the new and creates a lively, contemporary sound on his new record Everything Now.

The new platter comes out May 26th, 2023 on Solid Blues Records, distributed by Stony Plain. The sessions happened in Austin, Texas with the multi-platinum Gordie Johnson (Big Sugar) producing and in Ottawa, Canada with producer Eric Eggleston. Special guests on Everything Now include Texas blues guitarist Jimmie Vaughan, The Texas Horns, Rob McNelley, Stanton Moore, and Aaron Sterling.

JW wrote the entire album with fellow Canadian legends Johnson and Dick Cooper and firmly believes in the merit of the new material. “I am incredibly proud of these songs, and this music,” says Jones. “It is 100% original roots and blues with a variety of grooves, feels, and personal lyrics. This is a snapshot of who I am as a person, and where I am as an artist today.”

JW-Jones has received much acclaim in the last few years, both as a solo artist and as part of the Canadian roots band HOROJO Trio. He won Best Guitarist at the 2020 International Blues Challenge and HOROJO Trio won Best Band there, too. He’s a JUNO Award nominee and a Billboard Top Ten Blues artist. He has performed live in 23 countries, sat in with Buddy Guy, and opened for George Thorogood. He’s one of Canada’s top blues and roots acts and has the respect of all the right people.

The opening track of Everything Now is its title song “Everything Now.” It’s an upbeat soul/blues song with a strong chorus and a pop-ish bridge. Master New Orleans drummer Stanton Moore of Galactic contributes a beautiful groove to this bone-shaker and your day will get better the moment you feel it. Jones sings engagingly and puts down more than a few sweet guitar lines, as well.

“Keeping Me Up” is a moody and minor rock song about getting funny vibes from your partner’s sleep talking. It’s a cool, mid-tempo song with a lot of nice guitar work on rhythm and lead. Fans of a certain age will recognize the vintage power pop influence the tune flaunts, combining tight hooks and dirty guitars like genre innovators Cheap Trick and The Knack. It’s a great sound and it’s good to see it being brought back around.

The true-to-life dysfunction of “Papa’s In The Pen” is a giant slice of real-world noir that tells the tale of someone growing up with some pretty sketchy parents. It’s a dramatic song that definitely delivers the goods. The tag line “Mama’s off the rails again and Papa’s in the pen” tells all about how this kid feels and pulls you into his difficult situation. It’s one of the strongest cuts on the album and will linger in your mind.

Texas guitar king Jimmie Vaughan drops in to jam on the rollicking and rolling “Take Your Time.” Vaughn and Jones both light this one up on guitar and sound fully alive playing off of each other. Jimmie is a living legend and he sounds as amazing as ever here. Like the whole album, this is a well-written tune that hits its target and will quickly get lodged in your playlists. Jones definitely has the touch.

The mellow “When You Left” features The Texas Horns, which is always good news. The track is an honest, soulful ballad dealing with love’s demise and Jones relates the story of a sudden breakup with genuine emotion. The Texas Horns ice the cake of the arrangement and make this another unforgettable selection.

JW-Jones steps out big-time on Everything Now and the set is going to do a lot to raise his already-high profile. He has that ideal balance between being a guitar guy and a singer-songwriter that so many others fail to achieve. Each note and word is in the right place and you’ll want to listen to every song. Highly recommended. ~Mike O’Cull

Fresh off the heels of winning ''Best Guitarist'' at the 2020 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Jones was stoked for a huge year before COVID-19 hit and halted his tour schedule. ''I knew I had to do something productive to stay positive, so I turned isolation into inspiration!''

JUNO-nominated Jones, whose searing axemanship has been praised in recent years by legendary blues artists Buddy Guy and Chuck Leavell (The Rolling Stones). From original music to previously unreleased songs, ''this album sounds bigger and wider-than-ever'' says Jones. It features a 17-piece band with a 13-piece horn section, plus additional tracking of vocals, guitars, and studio effects that led to a most appropriate title, Sonic Departures. After releasing ''Live'' less than two years ago, the frequent resident of Billboard's Top 10 Blues charts and roots radio favorite continues to accelerate his career momentum to new heights, whether it's as a personally-requested sit-in with the likes of 8-time Grammy winner Buddy Guy, opening for blues-rock icon George Thorogood, or entertaining thrilled audiences in 23 countries and four continents.

JW-Jones, the young Candian guitar slinger, singer, songwriter and bandleader, just gets better and better with each new album. JW-Jones, the guitar player, stands in the tradition of blues greats like Albert Collins, Lonnie Mack, Ronnie Earl, and Jimmie Vaughan. He can rock, too, although rock/blues is not his thing. Without ever sounding old-fashioned or even outdated, JW is mixing his blues roots with rock guitar sounds from the 1960s. We love him! 'Seventh Hour' is a fantastic album that will open many new doors for Canada's hardest working blues band.

Modern blues comes from throughout the world, but Ottawa, Canada, is not a locale that immediately comes to mind when you think of the aforementioned musical genre. However, JW-Jones is proof once and for all that you can never pin down where bluesmen hail from, as evidenced by his fifth release overall, 2008's Bluelisted. Admittedly, the album is more similar stylistically to Stevie Ray Vaughan (minus the guitar hero solos) and the Fabulous Thunderbirds than to authentic blues artists. But still, with the majority of modern day pop and rock music about as far removed from the blues as you can get, it's a treat to hear such bluesy ditties as "Double Eyed Whammy" and "Somebody's Got to Burn," as well as the rockabilly raver "Mad About You." And from a blues standpoint, you've got to respect the special guests who drop by throughout -- Little Charlie Baty, Junior Watson, Richard Innes, and Larry Taylor. From beginning to end, JW-Jones does the blues with class and style throughout Bluelisted. -- Allmusic.

What could a teenager possibly know about the blues? Traditionally the blues are about years of hard living and paying a hard price for it, and about serious lovin' and serious loss. Parodies, which frequently are based on kernels of truth, tell us that a bluesman worth the name must know about women, whiskey, and jail, and not necessarily in that order. But all these assumptions and kernels of truth fly right out the window when it comes to the youthful Canadian blues guitarist known as JW-Jones (and yes, the hyphen is in the right place). Born in Ottawa, he wasn't yet 20 years old when he triumphed in a hometown competition known as the Blues Guitar Riff-Off in 1999. Jones built on his early success and with a band he had pulled together the previous year of musicians who were about as young as he was or younger, the guitarist and his JW-Jones Blues Band set out to record an album. He debuted with Defibrillatin' in 2000. The CD features some numbers that were recorded at home, some that were laid down in a studio as demos, as well as a couple of live numbers. While some critics groused a tiny bit about the quality of the release's sound, they quickly followed the complaint with superlatives for Jones' talent. His band is comprised of "Southside" Steve Marriner, the champion in 1999 of the Blues Harp Blow-Off in Ottawa, on harmonica; Pierre Chretien on organ and piano; drummer Steve Hiscox, and upright bass player Nathan Morris. Jones penned seven of the debut album's tracks. Chretien wrote one song, as did Marriner. Before turning to the guitar, Jones was initially interested in the drums. A change of heart brought him to the guitar after he found himself intently listening to and watching an Ottawa guitarist named Tony D. The guitarist's moves so impressed Jones that he hammered questions at Tony D after his shows. The working musician took the time to answer the teenager's questions, provide tips, and recommend a list of recordings. The switch to guitar from drums was cemented when Jones' grandparents gave him an electric guitar late in 1996. Keyboardist Chretien is credited with bringing a jazz influence to Jones' and the band's sound. Jones met Marriner through the Johnny Russell Band when both played with the outfit, as they still do. In 2001, the Maple Blues Awards honored Defibrillatin' with a nomination. The following year, the Maple Blues Awards listed Jones as a nominee for New Artist of the Year and named Marriner as a finalist for Harp Player of the Year. He followed those achievements up with 2002's Bogart's Bounce, featuring help from Fabulous Thunderbirds Kim Wilson and Gene Taylor. ~Linda Seida

The road that led JW-Jones to Nashville to record with Grammy-winning producer Tom Hambridge (Buddy Guy, George Thorogood, Susan Tedeschi) for the legendary Blind Pig Records was challenging, and the result is Belmont Boulevard — his most intimate and explosive album yet. Each song plays like a round in a heavyweight title fight and Jones emerges a winner, playing with fire hotter than those that burned him. These songs contain powerful, personal stories (“Cocaine Boy,” “Thank You”) that capture the edge and energy of his live shows, filled with snarling, screaming guitars (“Magic West Side Boogie”) and grit and groove (“What’s Inside Of You”). Belmont Boulevard is the story of a battle-tested artist not only absorbing the punches but fighting back, towering above his troubles, ready to hit the road to take on whatever comes next. ~Josh Hathaway

No longer a teenage prodigy, Canadian blues guitarist JW-Jones is pushing 30, and on his sixth album, Midnight Memphis Sun, he has decided to emphasize his fidelity to tradition, partially recording the disc in Sun Studio in Memphis, TN, and having veterans Charlie Musselwhite and Hubert Sumlin guest on three tracks each. Like many latter-day blues revivalists, Jones doesn't hew to any one style of the blues, preferring to move from one subgenre to another on each song. "Off the Market," the opening track, with its punchy horns, initially suggests that he might have wanted to record in the Stax Studio (if it still existed) instead of the Sun Studio; Lowell Fulson's "Love Grows Cold," which follows, is in a jump blues style; "Right on Time" has a ‘50s R&B sound; Jimmy Reed's "I Don't Go for That" recalls Howlin' Wolf-style Chicago blues; "Mean Streak" nods to Delta blues; and "Make a Move" is arranged like a B.B. King song. The majority of the compositions are Jones originals, although the tunes are so steeped in tradition that it's hard to think of them as new. With his co-writer, Tim Wynne-Jones, Jones seems to have been reading the newspapers since his last album, 2008's Bluelisted, as he tries to steer clear of the housing crisis in "Off the Market," singing, "Don't wanna go sub-prime," and devotes "Born Operator" to condemning Wall Street criminal Bernie Madoff and his "Ponzi schemes." As usual, Jones is more of a guitarist than a singer, not because his voice is bad, but because, with its clear tenor sound (which often recalls Edgar Winter), it sounds more like a pop voice than a blues voice. But then, this is a musician who thinks it's possible to turn fellow countryman Bryan Adams into a blues artist, treating the hit "Cuts Like a Knife" as if it were a blues song. Ten years into his recording career, Jones remains a talented mimic in search of his own style. ~William Ruhlmann

Recipe for the blues: Take one loud and aggressive, raunchy guitar player, stir in a rock solid rhythm section, add a dash of special guest players and singers, sprinkle with horns, and mix well (preferably by a producer like Kim Wilson of the Fabulous Thunderbirds). Let them cook through a selection of originals and a few well chosen covers. Remove the lid (don't worry if you forget this part. . . they'll prob'ly blow it right off) and let simmer for a few days. . . just so you get to know it. Serve hot!

That's the meal set up on the JW-Jones Blues Band's new CD. My Kind of Evil is produced by that sizzling harp player Kim Wilson, and the very first thing you notice is the sound of JW-Jones's guitar. It's raw, and loud, pushy, overpowering, just the way I like it. Sure, on a couple of tracks he shows a bit more self control. . . but who needs self control anyway? It's a blues album! The band is comprised of Nathan Morris on bass (acoustic and electric), Bill Brennan on drums and Geoff Daye on keyboards. And they provide a sympathetic and strong foundation. The Wind Chill Factor Horns do their duty propelling things along with three saxes and a trumpet. Kim Wilson joins on vocals on a couple of tracks, and harp solos too. Canadian blues-rocker Colin James takes lead vocals on two tracks.

The songs are fairly standard blues structures, with lyrics that essentially carry on from the titles. Think about them: "Shake That Mess," "Ain't Gonna Lie," "Cheating Woman." You get the idea. The covers include "Blue Monday," a Fats Domino tune, and Johnny Otis's "What You Do To Me." No surprises, but heck, who wants surprises on a blues album that follows the recipe? As long as the band rocks and the soloists sizzle, that's pretty much what you're looking for, isn't it?

My Kind of Evil has been getting steady play in the car, with the top down and the windows rolled down, as I drive along Highway 6, headin' towards Caledonia! And that, my friends, is what I want in a blues album! Well done, JW! ~David Kidney

Thanks to Marc.

One listen to JW-Jones new one, Kissing In 29 Days could lead one to think JW stands for 'Jive Wildly', as it evokes the rambunctious sounds that spilled out of Kansas City speakeasies during the 1940’s. The vocals, guitars, horns, and full-blooded arrangements take their cues from this mythical time. The result is a non-stop party cruise. One listen should raise your blood alcohol content by 50 percent!

Swinging releases are JW's forte, yet his fourth one on NorthernBlues seems the most high-spirited. Chock full of boogie woogie piano, big R&B horns, and especially boppin’ T-Bone indebted guitar. The title track opens things, setting the mood with its bodacious lyrics, joyful groove, and intoxicating gaiety. Another dance instigator is All My Money, although it incorporates a big band sound similar to Beale Street in the early 50's. A sure bet! There are other geographical influences, such as those high flying Johnny Otis shows hugely popular on the mid-50’s Los Angeles scene, as captured on Parsimonia which also features saxophonist legend David 'Fathead' Newman who also guests on Hallelujah I Love Her So (he played behind Ray Charles on the original) and Here She Comes. That burnished West Coast lounge sound was the cat's meow in sophistication deal back then, and this Jazz/Blues hybrid gets proper dues on Standing In Line. Those down-and-dirty Chicago Blues shuffles are brought to life on Got Me Chasin’; while Texas roadhouse meets Ike Turner’s whammy bar on the torrid No Love. Enough said! Little Milton passed away one month before scheduled to record together with JW, but Jones gets to honour this Soul giant on Hey Girl! Better yet, just forget locations, as Kissing In 29 Days should make JW-Jones the toast of any town. - Gary Tate

The JW-Jones Blues Band sophomore effort is one incredibly fun album. JW-Jones has has pulled all the stops for this album - first he managed to get Gene Taylor from the Fabulous Thunderbirds to come and play piano, then he got his friend Kim Wilson to guest on three tracks, and then he got Tortoise Blue to play organ, and his friend Roxanne to do a vocal, and before you know, he's produced a gem!

Bogart's Bounce is non-stop fun! Both JW-Jones and Southside Steve showcase their incredible talents - JW with his beautiful swing guitar, and Southside Steve with his fantastic harmonica chops. Combine their exquisite playing with fantastic sound quality, the special guests mentioned above, the great cover art of Michael Wrycraft, and you have a world-class album! Enjoy!

Like Jimmy Witherspoon, T-Bone Walker, and Dave Specter, J.W. Jones is the sort of person who likes a lot of jazz in his blues. Defibrillatin', the Canadian guitarist/singer's debut album, doesn't cater to bop snobs -- Jones doesn't spend all of his time trying to show you how fast he can play John Coltrane's "Giant Steps" or Sonny Rollins' "Oleo," but he does sound like the sort of bluesman who has spent a lot of time listening to guys like Jimmy Smith and Jimmy McGriff (not to mention T-Bone Walker). And he plays the sort of jump blues and blues-jazz that comes naturally when you like to blow and improvise; Jones' fondness for jazz comes through on the vocal numbers as well as the instrumentals. The closest that Jones gets to bop on this CD is "Dizzy Spells," an instrumental that was obviously named after trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie. Although likable, the vocal numbers point to the fact that Jones is more of a guitarist than a singer -- in fact, he didn't start singing until he was advised that doing so would increase his commercial appeal. Defibrillatin' isn't earth-shattering, but it's a decent, if derivative, debut. And to his credit, Jones handles most of the writing himself instead of inundating listeners with overdone blues standards. ~Review by Alex Henderson
