The band’s 14th career album re-arms their mastery of the rockin’ roadhouse blues that has become their signature sound. Award-winning producers Terry Wilson and John Porter (Buddy Guy, Taj Mahal, Keb Mo) assembled highly skilled and seasoned players to once again stretch the boundaries of their Texas Blues roots with touches of soul and hints of New Orleans spice.

Augmenting the core unit of Teresa James (piano/vocals), Billy Watts (guitar), Terry Wilson (bass), Darrell Leonard (trumpet), Paulie Cerra (saxophone) and Tony Braunagel (drums), GRAMMY winning keyboard master Kevin McKendree appears on more than half the tracks, GRAMMY winner Jay Bellerose handles drums on two tracks, and keeping things in the family, James and Wilson’s son-in-law, Richard Millsap (John Fogerty’s touring drummer) adds percussion throughout. Session guitar master Dane Parks adds flavor to “Trouble in Paradise”, David P. Jackson, named California Country Music Association’s Best Instrumentalist in 1996, adds accordion to “Anytime is Alright”. The singular sounds of GRAMMY winning pianist Jon Cleary along with slide guitar from producer John Porter add a special treat to the title track.

James’ extensive musical career includes recordings with Walter Trout, Eric Burdon, Spencer Davis, Tommy Castro, Stephen Bruton, Randy Newman, LeeRoy Parnell, Neil Diamond, and lots more; plus live performances with countless others, including Marcia Ball, Levon Helm, Lloyd Jones, Delbert McClinton, and Eric Burdon & the Animals. Along with Terry Wilson, her partner in music and life, the pair have proven the perfect team, combining Wilson’s songwriting with James’ interpretation for undeniable synergistic success. James is a three time Contemporary Blues Female Artist Blues Music Award nominee. /Bluestown Music

Teresa James & The Rhythm Tramps - Rose-Colored Glasses Vol. 2

Size: 114.4 MB
Time: 48:54
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2023
Styles: Blues, Soul, R&B
Art: Full

01. I'd Do It For You (3:23)
02. Better Angels (4:22)
03. Lean On Love (4:39)
04. The Idea Of You (3:33)

07. Flip Flop (3:21)
08. The Heart Wants What It Wants (4:12)

10. Just Don't Think About It (4:32)
11. Brand New Flame (4:14)
12. Second Chance (3:25)

Those rose-colored glasses that Teresa James sports on the album cover of her latest release, Rose-Colored Glasses Vol. 2, are much more than just a clever prop and title. They represent the continuation of a vision that began almost exactly two years ago, when James and her musically exuberant Rhythm Tramps – fronted by her warmly soulful vocals – released Rose-Colored Glasses Vol. 1, finding the joys of love and life through the lens of their rose-colored musical outlook. In addition to being awarded two silver medals from the Global Music Awards and a Libera Award nomination for Best Blues Record, James also received her second Blues Music Award nomination (Contemporary Blues Female Artist) following the release of Vol 1.

Since those glasses were overflowing with that vision, those ingredients are back in place for Vol. 2, another dozen expressive songs hand-crafted by producer/bassist/songwriter/ husband Terry Wilson along with James and caressed into existence by James' honeyed voice that treats every song as an emotional rescue. Wilson notes, "So many times I thought I'd be finished with a tune, and then Teresa would come in, hear it, and teach me how it should be done, especially melodically and dynamically.”

The Tramps plus a few friends are their usual crackling good selves here, allowing James to blend her Texas roots with their present Los Angeles environs into crisp, swinging, countrified Southern California soul. James's expressive vocals are smooth and sensuous, with just a hint of romantic grit, and always right in tune with her message. The icing on the cake for the project was a trip to Malmsbury, England where James and Wilson had the opportunity to visit with and learn from their friend, grammy-winning producer and engineer, John Porter, while he completed the mixing and mastering of the album.

This adventure begins with the sultry opener's promise, “I'd Do It For You,” with the vow: “I'd take care of your bills, I'd give you your pills, I'd cure your ills....” “Better Angels” is an easy-rolling search for better angels with some honky-tonk undertones from keyboard wizard Kevin McKendree. “Lean On Love” is percussive, rock-steady advice on the emotional support available when leaning in the proper direction – toward love, of course.

“The Idea Of You” is a softly soulful ballad in a smaller combo setting that puts the emphasis on James' haunting vocal turn. “That's What I'm Talking About” is a gently swinging affair with a lovely liquid guitar run followed by a sensuous sax solo by Paulie Cerra. “I Don't Need Another Reason To Fall In Love” bounces to life with a touch of R&B driving James toward her man. James gets a co-writing credit on “Flip Flop,” with clever wordplay that highlights the dilemma of a love that's “got me in a hot spot ... catch you on the flip-flop....” “The Heart Wants What It Wants” is an eloquent lyrical gem as Wilson blends keys, guitar, and bass behind a poignant vocal turn.

“Ain't Nothing For Certain,” another track with James' name and style on it, highlights the will to survive: “Ain't nothin' for certain in the world we're livin' in, never give up, never give in....” “Just Don't Think About It” is a lighthearted ode to heartache. “Brand New Flame” serves as a torchy invitation: “I ain't lookin' for no one night stand, and I don't want no come and go man …. if you're lookin' for a brand-new flame, well I'm a hot one....” The closer, an upbeat “Second Chances,” throbs with the promise of rose-colored optimism: “I believe in second chances, I believe in love at first glance, I believe in true romance....“ Indeed. And that's the promise of this sparkling Teresa James & the Rhythm Tramps session, created with warmth and passion and musical genius. Those rose-colored glasses seem to be working just fine. ~Jim White

Teresa James - With A Little Help From Her Friends

10. Think For Yourself (3:31)

The Beatles songbook has been interpreted and reimagined in a multitude of ways, transforming the British invasion pop into big band jazz, bluegrass, funk, techno, classical and opera. For their own deep dive, Texas-born and Los Angeles based keyboardist, Teresa James, and her band, the Rhythm Tramps, take the music of the Fab Four on a coast-to-coast magical music tour. Produced by Terry Wilson and Kevin McKendree, With A Little Help From Her Friends, is a loving tribute to the songs of The Beatles and the musical styles of the great American landscape of blues, roots, and soul. Along with her partner, Terry Wilson, James recruited two new “Tramps” to join them on this journey, the acclaimed producer and keyboardist Kevin McKendree and drummer Richard Millsap, along with backing vocalists Lucy Wilson and Nicki Bluhm and a special appearance from rising star Yates McKendree.

The ten-track collection opens with a Texas Roadhouse soaked “Ticket To Ride,” featuring McKendree on barrelhouse piano. “Taxman,” from the 1966 album Revolver is given a full Haight Ashbury psychedelic treatment. First released as B-Side, “Don’t’ Let Me Down,” was credited to "The Beatles with Billy Preston”; here the Tramps smooth out the groove and add some southern slide guitar. The deep cut from Hard Day’s Night, “Happy Just to Dance With You,” is almost unrecognizable from the original as the Tramps remake it as a sweet 70’s Memphis Soul number with a touch of B.B. King.

James spars with Yates McKendree on the whiskey soaked take of “Oh Darlin’,” both eking out the emotions of a classic blues number. Originally an acoustic track, “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away” is given a fuller arrangement flavored with touches of Motown and Philly Soul. The swampy feel of “Everybody’s Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey,” is more akin to Muscle Shoals than Abbey Road and Wilson tosses in a Duck Dunn quote under the guitar solo. McCartney was going for the Motown sound when he wrote “You Won’t See Me” in 1965; James and the Tramps give the song a sultry sophisticated vibe smoothing its pop edges. Their cover of Lennon’s “No Reply,” from 1964 successfully mirrors the Brill Building sound of the same era by fusing together influences of Latin, traditional black gospel, and rhythm and blues, achieving what The Beatles often sought for.

The slinky swing version of “Think For Yourself,” closes out the set with James and the Tramps reimagining one of George Harrison’s first philosophical songs, released on the 1965 album Rubber Soul, as a Texas Blues shuffle. Regarded as the most influential band of all time, the music of The Beatles has been with us for 60 years. Veteran musicians Teresa James and the Rhythm Tramps have undoubtably felt that influence in their lives and share their affection with the world on this brilliant new project that her fans and Beatles fans will love. ~Rick J Bowen

This band has been performing 'live' in the LA area and around the world for over 20 years and have developed a very distinctive sound that is a blend of Texas roadhouse, southern blues, and Motown with a little touch of Louisiana mixed in. We are so happy to finally have a record that truly represents what we sound like live. Here is what one reviewer has said about the new release:

"It is hard to measure in actual quantitative levels the amount of joy one gets from playing music with great friends, but every ounce of that emotion comes ringing through on the new release from Teresa James and the Rhythm Tramps simply titled “LIVE!” The new tracks are a baker’s dozen of six original tunes and seven favorite cover songs from her two decades as a recording artist, including songs from her most recent Grammy-nominated album “Here In Babylon.”

"The album is a compilation of performances from four different shows at one of their favorite haunts, Bogie’s, with four different lineups of her touring band, thus creating a true representation of their live show. Anchored around her main partners in crime, Terry Wilson on bass and guitarist Billy Watts, the band is augmented by an amazing horn section featuring Lee Thornburg & Darrell Leonard on trumpet and Joe Sublett, Paulie Cerra, and Ron Dziubla on saxophone. Three award-winning drummers round out the Rhythm Tramps - Herman Matthews, Jay Bellarose and Tony Braunagel - each adding their own distinctive groove to the collection."

Just listen to a few of the samples - you won't be disappointed!

This is Teresa James & the Rhythm Tramps 10th cd..."Here In Babylon". Produced by Teresa and her husband/partner/bassist/songwriter Terry Wilson. The band features Billy Watts on guitar & vocals,Terry Wilson on bass & vocals, Jay Bellarose on drums & percussion, Mike Finnigan on B-3. Darrell Leonard on trumpet & trombone, Joe Sublett on sax. Horn Arrangements by Darrell Leonard. The cd features 12 original songs written mostly by Terry Wilson as well as several co-writes with Teresa and Terry....Terry & Gregg Sutton and one song by Gregg & Bill Livsey. Teresa and the band have a Rootsy, Texas Roadhouse soul that goes between Texas blues and rocking Southern roots. Teresa James was born and raised in Houston, Texas where she was introduced to music at an early age by her father and grandfather, both guitar players in the old tradition. She starting playing piano at 5 and hasn’t stopped since.
Called a singer’s singer by many. (When the SAG Singer’s Committee got together to honor composer Randy Newman, Teresa was chosen as the soloist to perform his favorite song to him.) She has recorded with Tommy Castro, Eric Burdon, Spencer Davis, Randy Newman, LeeRoy Parnell, Neil Diamond, Walter Trout, Stephen Bruton, and many others. She has performed live with lots of other artists, including: Al Anderson, Marcia Ball, Levon Helm, Delbert McClinton, Lloyd Jones, and the Derailers to mention just a few.
Blues Matters magazine in the U.K. is quoted “the girls voice does the talking alright with a knife edge when she wants rip your ears off or your heart out!”
The Pasadena Weekly said…”She is one of the most honest, gutsy, incredible singers you'll find. The Texas-bred James takes creative chances, investing amazing soul and spirit in her music.”
Levon Helm of "The Band" said "Teresa James is a true original. When she sings you can feel it in your bones."
Here’s a little of what Bill Bentley from Sonic Boomers said about Teresa and her recent “You Know You Love It” cd. “This is the stuff they don't teach you in school….. These are the keepers of the unknown language. Teresa’s voice is all-knowing, like she's been to the places most of us aren't able to go. It is a mixture of rejection and redemption, … be glad there are still people like Teresa James and the Rhythm Tramps who care enough to do this and share their spirits. Each and every one of them should receive a letter jacket with a big "S" for soul on it. Class dismissed. “ Teresa’s last 2 CD releases have both earned a hard to get 4 Star Review in Downbeat magazine.
Teresa and her band the Rhythm Tramps are a Los Angeles based band made up of players that have either played or recorded with such artists as Eric Burdon & the Animals, Bonnie Raitt, Delbert McClinton, Jimmy Reed, Lightin’ Hopkins, Jimmy Vaughan, John Martyn, Big Al Anderson (NRBQ), Johnny Nash, Dixie Chicks, Jennifer Warnes, Smokey Robinson, BB King, Joe Henry, just to name a few and have had their songs recorded by Paul Rodgers, Kathy Mattea, Eric Burdon, Tommy Castro, Marcia Ball and others. As one critic said, “there are no clichés in this band”. They move easily through Texas style grease and blues into Memphis soul or New Orleans flavored grooves and all points in between with fun and abandonment.
Teresa and the band have toured all over N. America and Europe and have played such music festivals as The Nottodden Blues Festival in Norway, Moulin Osprey in Holland, Tampa Blues Festival, iFest in Houston, Tx. Main St Arts Festival in Ft. Worth, Tx. Portand, Oregon’s Waterfront Festival and she has been one of the featured acts on Delbert McClinton’s Sandy Beaches Cruise for the past 16 years along with Delbert, John Hiatt, Keb Mo, Lyle Lovett…to name a few. She was nominated by the Blues Foundation in ’08 for “Contemporary Female Blues Artist of the Year”.

Following her 2008 Blues Foundation nomination for Contemporary Blues Female Artist, and two subsequent Independent Music Awards, Teresa James' new album -- her ninth -- features a depth of performance and material that covers a wide range of musical territory and emotions.
From the swampy rawness of the title cut to the urban strut of "Hollywood Way," Bonafide has something for everyone. Besides a bevy of wellconceived
original songs, the band throws in a couple of cover tunes: "I Like It Like That," the great oldie by the "5" Royales, and James’ muchrequested version of John Hiatt’s "Have A Little Faith." With performances by some of Los Angeles' top musicians, the album lives up to its name.
Originally from Houston, Teresa James and her band The Rhythm Tramps have been working in the L.A. area and at blues festivals and clubs throughout the U.S. and Europe for many years. For the past 12 years, the group has been a favorite on Delbert McClinton's Sandy Beaches Blues Cruise. James' last album, 2012's "Come On Home," was listed on many "best of" lists that year and received rave reviews.
She has performed live with such legendary artists as Levon Helm, Delbert McClinton, Eric Burdon, Marcia Ball and Tommy Castro, and her voice has been featured on albums by Randy Newman, Eric Burdon, Bill Medley and Walter Trout, among others. She has also sung for television and movie soundtracks, including Disney's "HOLES."

'Come On Home' has been getting a lot of airplay and some great reviews… Many thanks to Terry Wilson who wrote or co-wrote most of them and who painstakingly produced the CD - and we've got some of the best players around on it, too. Of course we have Billy Watts on guitar and vocals (one of the best guitar players ever who should also be much more well known but then we wouldn't ever be able to afford him - thank you Billy); the lovely Ms. Debra Dobkin lent us her considerable talents on percussion and background vocals; Jerry Peterson is all over the CD with his soulful sax; and on drums we have the best of the best: Jim Christie, Herman Matthews, and Tony Braunagel (Google them!). But wait, there's more... we've also got some special sit-in guests we're thrilled about: from New Orleans, the ever so funky Jon Cleary on piano; the amazing Mike Finnigan back on B-3 (he's played on several of our CDs but this time we get to sing a duet together); Lee Thornburg once again has lent us his considerable talents on trumpet and his superb horn arrangements, Leslie Smith joins us with his beautiful vocals, and, we are very excited to have the killer horn section from Mingo Fishtrap joining us on a track too. We even got the infamous David P. Jackson on accordion on one cut! And to top it all off, we were lucky enough to have the amazing Mr. John Porter mix it!! I really think that it is one of the best things that we have done and I can't wait for you to hear it! ~TJ

This CD - Teresa's 7th - is a powerful follow-up to the acclaimed 'Bottom Line' CD that garnered her a nomination from the Blues Foundation for 'Contemporary Female Blues Artist of the Year' for 2008. From the opening bars of the funky, down-home 'Hug Yourself', to the delicate and soulful, 'Sunday Shoes' and all the way to the raucous title cut that closes out the album, this is a great collection. An engaging mix of blues, Americana and the just plain rockin' attitude that this band is known for, this CD definitely deserves a listen.

Teresa and her band of seasoned players along with some close friends of Teresa's and the band (John Rabbit Bundrick from The Who on B-3 - Mike Finnegan from Etta James and Joe Cocker on B-3 - Tony Braunagel on drums from Taj Mahal, Bonnie Raitt as well as Herman Matthews from the Tom Jones Band, Tower of Power on drums)lending their musical talents have raised the bar on this melting pot blend of Texas blues, Southern roots Americana with one great song after the other here. One critic says..."There ain't no bad songs here...one great after the other". From roadhouse grease to soulful ballads, Teresa shows her Texas born and bred roots here and nails it with her best record to date. The Bottom Line shows you why she’s getting the acclaim and recognition she deserves and why she and her band, The Rhythm Tramps are getting booked 'round the world at music and blues festivals everywhere.
