Both find Esther in her jump blues/slow-burn belter phase, before she changed her name to Esther Phillips and explored genres like country-blues and soul. Though neither collection includes her earlier work for Savoy (for whom she recorded some hit singles), stuff like the Johnny Otis collaborations "Crying Blues" and "Hold Me" (both on 1951) or 1952's barreling "Hollerin' and Screamin'" and "Saturday Night Daddy" and the duet with Little Willie, "Turn the Lamps Down Low," show Esther in fun, fiery form. ~Johnny Loftus

WELCOME to the latest instalment of our "Adventures in UK Club Land" exploring the "Club Beat" - the roots of R&B, Ska, Gospel, Jazz, Soul, Mod and, in this chapter, BLUES. THE BLUES evolved in the late eighteen hundreds from a melting pot of homespun black music performed to small audiences across the American South. It wasn't until the 1920s, after the migration to cities such as Chicago that the genre was christened the Blues, a term initiated by the record industry, designed to appeal to a black audience. The blues continues to evolve today and, like it's original counterparts, gospel, jazz and R&B, it plays a leading role in popular music, the roots of which can be heard in our unique 25-track compilation.

Various - Risque Blues Vols. 1 & 2

A blues collection designed for the over 18s only! Here for your listening pleasure are fifty examples of what were once known as "party" records. Since the dawn of the cylinder, semi pornographic songs were an integral part of the pleasure to be derived from the audio experience. It's parental guidance all the way! There's lots of euphemisms and metaphors on display so it doesn't take much imagination to figure them out. Whichever way you cut it this dirty blues pie is chock full of double entendre with a side order of just plain bad language. Great stuff!

The Historic Rhythm & Blues Extravaganza That Rocked The 1970 Monterey Jazz Festival

The blues never has been, to my recollection, the occasion for a more joyous celebration of its uniquely vibrant spirit than on a certain day in the late summer of 1970, when Johnny Otis brought his entire azure-indigo caravan of giants to spread their talents over an afternoon on the fairgrounds at Monterey, California. Here was the consummate proof that where today's music may set up communication and generation gaps, the blues destroys them. On stage, where Shuggie Otis, 16; rhythm guitarist Jim (Supe) Bradshaw, 23; singers Margie Evans and Delmar "Mighty Mouth" (no relation) Evans, both in their 20's; and the rest of the singing and blowing battalion representing every decade on up to Pee Wee Crayton and Big Joe Turner, both in their very late 50's, and Roy Milton, who's up there at the Social Security borderline.

The same with the roaring receptive, over capacity audience. Those who stood up on their seats hollering and testifying, or boogalooed along the aisles, were mostly in the 15-25 bracket, while others, less extroverted, exchanged reminiscences about the first time they had heard the call of the blues, perhaps at some half-remembered dance in the 30's, or on a 78 record player at high school in the 40's and 50's. That's what this album is all about. This is no gallery of museum pieces set up to rekindle a lost past, no futile exercise in nostalgia; instead it is a meeting ground were ages, races, and backgrounds coalesce, where grooving together is all that matters. /Leonard Feather

Various Artists - Voodoo Voodoo: Feisty Fifties Females (3 CD)

Compiled by R&B and rock & roll authority Dave Penny, the 90-track 3 CD set Voodoo Voodoo pays tribute to the distaff side of 1950s R&B music that would inform the rock ’n’ roll explosion of the latter half of the decade, from the last shout of the 1940s big band “thrushes” such as Ella Johnson and Dinah Washington, through the fearsome vocal power of the likes of R&B trailblazers such as Big Maybelle, Ruth Brown, LaVern Baker and Big Mama Thornton, to the early experiments of the mainstream pop singers such as Ella Mae Morse, Kay Starr, Peggy Lee, Lillian Briggs and Jaye P. Morgan.

That ages old question, who cut the first rock ’n’ roll record?, will never be answered as the style evolved over several years, and in any case everyone has their own idea of what constitutes rock ’n’ roll. By contrast the question, who was the first white performer to successfully utilise the black R&B style and mould it into a sound that could convincingly be labelled “rock ‘n’ roll”?, sounds more straightforward: surely it was Elvis Presley or Bill Haley? But was it? There is a compelling argument that the women beat the men to the punch when it came to assimilating black music for white consumption in the 1950s and while it might not have been the TKO that history tells us was delivered by Presley or Haley, it was still a mighty blow that deserves to be better documented. Indeed, rather than the black vocal harmony groups that originated “Fool, Fool, Fool” and “Money Honey”, it is now suggested that Elvis was influenced to record these songs in his early years from the cover versions by Kay Starr and Ella Mae Morse.

So prepare yourself for a whole lot of rhythm and rock from 65 feisty females on Voodoo Voodoo, a compilation that is happy to embrace singers from across a range of styles – R&B, big band and pop – just so long as they deliver the goods vocal-wise. Ice water at the ready! It’s a hot one, we’re tellin’ ya.

Various Artists - Ain't Gonna Hush: The Queens Of Rhythm & Blues (3 CD)

From the mid-50s to the early 60s, R&B belonged not just to men with guitars, but to women who sang with hungry voices on stages and in studios across the US. Their roots were planted in the blues of Ma Rainey, Mamie Smith, Ida Fox and Bessie Smith, the gospel of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the jazz of Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington. Their legacy lies in the recordings collected on "Ain’t Gonna Hush" by journalist (Mojo, Record Collector) and R&B authority Lois Wilson.

Selected because of their collectability and popularity on the club scene, the 76 tracks on the 3 CD set "Ain’t Gonna Hush" include contributions by crowned queens of soul Etta James and Aretha Franklin, and other luminaries like Big Maybelle, Ruth Brown, Little Esther, LaVern Baker and Betty Everett. But lesser-known names are also well represented, whose recordings, like most of the songs collected here, sold poorly, but fetch huge prices today. Their lack of success was not due to ability, performance or quality of songwriting; every artist here (including Kentucky-born rockabilly musician Joyce Harris) shouts, screams and hollers as if their lives depend on it, every song is perfectly crafted. But due to bad luck, lack of promotion or simply the fact that with a market flooded with choice, the competition was tough and these 45s fell through the cracks. Here those unfortunate turns of fate are redressed with a collection that compiles the forgotten alongside the famed. Ain’t Gonna Hush reasserts the eminence of revered voices and proposes the coronation of a larger cast of R&B Queens.
