Formed in Montreal in the mid 1960s as Les Gants blancs, the band went through a variety of names (including "7e Invention", "Grandpa & Company", "Offenbach Pop Opera", and "Offenbach Soap Opéra") before settling on Offenbach in 1969. The band initially consisted of vocalist and lyricist Pierre Harel, guitarist Johnny Gravel, organist and singer Gerry Boulet, bassist Michel Lamothe (son of country singer Willie Lamothe), and drummer Denis Boulet (Gerry's brother).

Offenbach Soap Opera released their debut self-titled album, Offenbach Soap Opéra, in 1971. Although the band's material was primarily in French, that album also included two English songs, "No Money No Candy" and "High But Low".

Denis Boulet left the band in 1972, and was replaced by Roger (Wezo) Belval. In November of that year, the band performed a "Mass for the Dead" at Saint Joseph's Oratory, which was released on album as Saint-Chrone de néant.

In 1973, Pierre Harel left the band to pursue a career as a filmmaker and the band toured France. They were based there for the next two years as they toured Europe extensively. Several performances from this era were documented in the concert film Tabarnak, directed by Claude Faraldo. In 1975, the band returned to Montreal.

Lamothe and Belval left in 1977 and were replaced by Norman Kerr on bass and Pierre Lavoie on drums; Jean Millaire also joined the band that year as a second guitarist, but left within the year and was replaced briefly by Doug McCaskill, then permanently by John McGale. Kerr and Lavoie departed in 1978, and were replaced by Breen Leboeuf on bass and Robert Harrisson on drums.

In 1976, the band recorded its first of two English albums, Never Too Tender, and toured across Canada to promote it. They subsequently released three more French albums, Offenbach, Traversion and "En Fusion", before their second English language album, Rock Bottom, was released in 1980. Traversion won the band its first Félix Award for rock album of the year in 1979.

In 1979, Offenbach toured Quebec with the Vic Vogel Big Band. A recording of their concert at the St. Denis Theatre was issued in 1980 as Offenbach en fusion, which won the Félix Award for rock album of the year in 1980. The band also received Félix Awards in 1980 as group of the year and for show of the year, the latter honoring a concert on April 3 in which Offenbach became the first Québécois band ever to headline at the Montreal Forum.

In 1982, Harrison left the band and was replaced by Pat Martel. The band released three more albums of new material, as well as the live album À fond d'train (documenting a successful tour with Plume Latraverse), Gerry Boulet recorded his first solo album in 1985 and started planning a solo career. The band performed final shows at the Colisée de Québec and the Montreal Forum that year; the Montreal concert was released on album as Le Dernier show and as a concert film.

Mike Van Eyes Big Band - Ain't That Loving You, Baby

Album: Ain't That Loving You, Baby

7. All Or Nothing At All (4:08)
8. Hoe Down (3:18)
9. St. James Infirmary (5:21)

Vancouver’s soul and blues heavyweight Mike Van Eyes has long been considered one of the city’s most formidable piano forces, and there is no doubt that his place in the musical heritage of the city was assured from a very young age. With a father who was a senior musicologist at the University of British Columbia and founder of the Vancouver Folk Music Society and the Vancouver Folk Festival, and a mother who was a fine folk singer in her own right, his future destiny was in very little doubt.

Once Mike emerged from his own musical grounding, he spent subsequent decades building his own legacy as he immersed himself in the roots of rock’n’roll and rhythm and blues, playing with bands such as The Epics and The Trespassers who became institutions in the Vancouver scene. He also toured with the Herald Nix Band, where he even shared stages with The Clash in Edmonton and Calgary and sat in with Howlin’ Wolf’s band, finding a unique vantage point at the musical intersection where punk, blues and soul all collide. He has also collaborated with artists such as Colin James, The Yodells, GI Blues, Copyright, The Undertakin’ Daddies and Peewee Clayton, thereby cementing his own place in the history of West Coast roots music.

With all this behind him, Mike Van Eyes finally steps forward into the limelight in his own right with his new album, Ain’t That Loving You, Baby. On this album Mike is backed by his full 24-piece Big Band, a heavyweight lineup whose résumés stretch across classic soul and rock history, including musicians like celebrated electric guitarist Tim Porter, powerhouse saxophonist Jerry Cook, Vancouver jazz-rock fixture Chris Nordquist, Chris Davis on trumpet and Dave Say on alto-sax, who themselves have collaborated with the likes of Keith Richards, Robert Plant, The Isley Brothers, Michael Bublé, The Temptations and The Supremes, to name but a few.

The album is essentially a tribute to some of the greats from all these musical genres with each song carefully chosen with a particular artist in mind. It was recorded at the legendary Mushroom Studios (now Afterlife) with Juno Award-winning producer and engineer Erik P.H. Neilsen, who was on a mission to capture the vintage warmth that emanates from the original songs but all with a sharp, modern mix that is possible with the technology that is now available. And boy does he succeed!

Ain’t That Loving You, Baby is an album that takes you right back to a bygone era when the dance halls were swelling with people, the atmosphere was shrouded in smoke, the rhythms were vibrant, the brass sections were tearing down the walls, and the joints were literally jumping. With Mike Van Eyes at the helm, once again cementing his place as one of Canada’s most enduring and unmistakable voices in traditional rock ’n’ roll, jazz and rhythm and blues, this is a band who effortlessly bridge generations by bringing the vintage warmth of old school jazz and blues standards into a modern landscape with spectacular results. /Ian Corbridge, Louder Than War

Singer, piano player and composer Debra Power is well known both in Canada and United States, thanks to her energy to approach songs, as well as her bright piano attack. Her father led a dance orchestra during the golden age of swing back in the forties, so Debra learned very soon to play the eighty-eight keys, founding her first band when he was still in high school. Despite she has got a great popularity in the Calgary blues scene, it has not been up to now that Debra Power has released her first album.

This is a very good work that shows a woman in high spirits, but at the same time bright, unique and incomparable, showing it along the ten album songs covering from blues to funk, gospel and rhythm and blues with good reliability and professionalism. Debra’s voice and piano are backed by Mike Little on Hammond B-3, Russell Broom on guitar, Chris Byrne on bass, Kelly Kruse on drums and Mike Clark on tenor sax. All together succeed to create a warm casual atmosphere with songs full of rhythm, groove and delightful moments. /La Hora Del Blues

Debra Power - I'm Not From Chicago

Album: I'm Not From Chicago
Size: 102,3 MB
Time: 44:25
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2022
Styles: Blues, piano blues
Art: Full

1. Magnificent Heart (3:17)
2. Hardwired For The Blues (4:48)
3. What Colour Is Love (Feat. Keesha Pratt) (4:32)
4. New Shade Of Blue (4:26)
5. Slow Love (4:21)
6. I'm Not From Chicago (4:34)
7. The Last Time I Saw Memphis (4:17)
8. The Woman With The Hole In Her Heart (5:45)
9. Put Down The Baggage (4:26)
10. Debra Marie (3:55)

Anyone who has witnessed this red-headed fireball deliver her brand of the blues live can never forget her. And yes, with 2,618 kilometres between Calgary and Chicago, she’s not anywhere near the Windy City - yet her music can transport you instantly. A wicked piano-player, powerful vocalist and all-round nuclear explosion of a personality, Power is also a budding lyricist and capable songwriter - with only one non-original across ten songs. Blasting off with “Magnificent Heart”, the word ‘dynamic’ doesn’t quite cover the ball-busting, in-your-face experience, pushing her vocals slightly. Guitarist Steve Pineo’s “Hardwired For The Blues” proves the perfect cover for her as a slightly subdued Power bites into it utilizing a slower, more soulful approach - piano always in the foreground, joining Pineo’s slide and Mike Clark’s tenor sax.

The Mississippi-based Keeshea Pratt joins Power for the hard-hitting, soulful duet, “What Colour Is Love” - with its elevated message, delivered with sisterly gusto. The deeper blues groove of “New Shade Of Blue” is Power at her best - as she melds with her band (Chris Byrne, bass; Kelly Kruse, drums; Mike Little, B3; Pineo & Clark - including a much-loved shot of harp from Harpdog Brown) as Power’s more relaxed pace brings out her best playing and singing. Likewise, “Slow Love” is another slow burn and strong band number, as Power offers a strong, pleading vocal with strong accents from Clark’s tenor sax and Little’s B3.

“I’m Not From Chicago” brings Harpdog back into the fold and moves things much closer to Chicago, thanks to his distinctive brand of mid-‘50’s, Chi-town blues while, Pineo takes a step forward with a stronger guitar presence. Power’s vocal and front-and-centre piano style abounds. A true story-song, “The Last Time I Saw Memphis”, spins a tall tale that, in Power’s hands, sounds entirely believable, aided by Pineo’s slide, a mood-building band performance and another stand-out Harpdog cameo, adding harp and the voice of Elvis’ ghost. One of the album’s greatest moments comes with the highly personal “The Woman With The Hole In Her Heart”. While it tackles depression - if not the stress brought on by the isolation of the last two years - its strong piano arrangement and compelling vocal is entirely uplifting, with great B3 and slide guitar adding to the overall effect - a real show-stopper.

The bouncy, infectious “Put Down The Baggage” is yet another demonstration of Power’s effortless range and specific piano skills, incorporating jazzy barrelhouse, stride and good ol’ boogie woogie at will, as the band drives home its tight rhythmic core. Mike Clark’s tenor sax is on parade while Power struts her stuff, offering one of her most-focused piano solos. Originally written to crack up her mother with reminiscences of her childhood, “Debra Marie” provides a universal glimpse into childhood and the precious relationship we carry with us. At the same time, this highly personal song is a showcase for Power’s innate sense of humour while it helps to provide a backdrop to a true, consummate entertainer. /Eric Thom, Toronto Blues Society

Debra Power - Unapologetically Me

10. Mr. Red Shoes (4:01)

The city of Calgary, Canada, has established itself as one of the epicenters of blues in the country. It has produced fundamental artists of the scene such as James "Buddy" Rogers, the Gunn Blues Band, Brett Spalding, and Debra Power who has just released her new album, Unapologetically Me. Known as Calgary's piano virtuoso, Debra Power presents her fourth album, successor to the celebrated I'm Not From Chicago (2022), a work that earned her numerous nominations at the Maple Blues Awards and the International Blues Challenge in Memphis.

Power's music has deep roots in tradition: her father led a big band, and that legacy is clearly perceived in her sound, which naturally moves through blues, boogie woogie, barrelhouse and some nods to dixieland, elements that clearly emerge in this new album. Since her 2016 debut, Even Redheads Get the Blues, her powerful voice and expressive piano playing have been hallmarks of her style.

On Unapologetically Me, we find a more mature artist, deeply connected to the lyrics of the album's ten songs, supported by arrangements that respect the musical tradition upon which she has built her career. This, her fourth album, presents an honest Debra Power with identity and skill, settled in a moment of creative maturity that invites us to closely follow what is to come in her career. /Historias Del Blues

Pat Finochio - Out of the Blue

8. Karma (2:33)
9. No Love (2:42)
10. Marilyn (4:14)
11. Angel in Disguise (2:42)

Out of the Blue is a very apt title for this album. Jack de Keyzer was just starting out in Hamilton and Pat Finochio was a fellow student of the blues. They lost touch and only recently reconnected when Finochio asked if he would produce an album on him. Jack discovered that the songs Finochio had written were so good he had to record them. So here we get Finochio on vocals & drums with Jack and his band in a program of well-written, traditional blues that more than justifies Jack’s decision. That band is Alan Duffy on bass, Nick Succi, keys and Richard Thornton, sax. They just smoke on the rocking opener “Medicine Man” – he’ll be the cure for her broken heart. You’ll also like “Big Old Broken Heart”, a fine slab of 50’s rock ‘n’ roll. An attractive rhumba rhythm graces “I Need You in My Life”, with Steve Marrinerguesting on harmonica and Jack on acoustic. “Love Gone Blind” is a fine slow blues. With Marriner guesting on a couple more songs, the result is an album of ‘honest, well-lived Chicago-style blues’. Pat Finochio was unknown to me before this album and it doesn’t appear that he has a web site that I can send you to. These songs and this album should raise his profile considerably. And, of course, with the Jack de Keyzer Band playing this well, you will need this one anyway.

Blue Moon Marquee - Bare Knuckles & Brawn

Album: Bare Knuckles & Brawn

8. Big Smoke (3:10)
9. 52nd Street Strut (3:33)
10. Wayward (4:09)
11. Lost & Wild (4:08)

Upon reading the title Bare Knuckles & Brawn, from Canada’s Blue Moon Marquee, one might expect a CD full of hard-driving numbers that prove Saturday night’s all right for fighting. Imagine this reviewer’s surprise on finding eleven original songs that bring back the big-band sound of the 1940s, complete with horns, ragtime beats, and lead vocals reminiscent of Louis Armstrong’s. The lyrics also hearken to earlier days, expanding upon song names such as “High Noon,” “The Red Devil Himself,” and “52nd Street Strut.” Those who prefer their blues on the raunchier, meatier side won’t find much to chomp on, but those who like it smooth and hot will simply adore this album. It’s also great fuel for inspiration in quiet moments, meant to silence mental chatter and let one’s thoughts flow.

“This album, to me, represents a combination and evolution of our last records,” says front man A.W. Cardinal. “I believe it features some of our best recorded work, and we were able to do it with some of the best possible musicians.” Bassist and vocalist Jasmine Colette adds, “We recorded [it] in three days. I like all the grit and pulp with my music, so the warm sound of the tape made it come together. All the songs were written…in the last year of our travels, in relation to the air of the times, characters we meet, cities we walk in and the weather we feel.” Blue Moon Marquee currently makes their home in an island shack on the coast of the Salish Sea in British Columbia. Joining Cardinal and Colette are guest musicians Darcy Phillips on piano and Hammond B3; Jerry Cook on tenor sax, baritone sax, and clarinet; Jimmy “Hollywood” Badger on drums; Jack Garton on trumpet; and Paul Pigat on guitar for “The Red Devil Himself.”

“Big Black Mamba” starts things off, a unique meditation on the snare of fossil fuels: “I asked for water; she brought me gasoline. That’s the meanest gal I’ve ever seen. Big Black Mamba, you got me moaning low, dirty mis-treater from the stars of Texaco.” Up-tempo love ballads “Smoke Rings for my Rider” and “Fever Flickering Flame” follow, guaranteed to make even the dead rise from the grave and dance. Cardinal’s guitar is cardinal on both, a prime example of his instrument of choice conversing with listeners via musical notes. “Hard Times Hit Parade” slows things down, the perfect background music for a film noir scene. Dig Darcy Phillips on his Hammond and the melancholy horn solo, echoing in one’s ears like a night breeze.

“As I Lay Dying” contains the album’s title in a pithy piece of lyrics: “The world was built [with] bare knuckles and brawn.” A.W.’s vocals are at their Armstrong-iest here. Earworm “High Noon,” according to the band, “is a reference to Black Elk, a holy man of the Oglala Lakota people and the perseverance of Native peoples.” The next two tracks will make guitar lovers swoon, especially “Big Smoke” for traditionalists. “52nd Street Strut” is a rat-a-tat tribute to Billie Holliday, featuring Jasmine Colette’s velvety voice. “Wayward” and “Lost and Wild” close things out, with the final song wistfully bringing “What a Wonderful World” to mind. Blue Moon Marquee has demonstrated that their name should be in lights once more with the classic sound and big-band bravado of Bare Knuckles and Brawn! /Rainey Wetnight, Blues Blast Magazine

The 24th Street Wailers - Where Evil Grows

Album: Where Evil Grows
Size: 84,3 MB

Had a really rough day? Want to just relax, reboot, and get happy? If so, then the new 24th Street Wailers album, Where Evil Grows, is just the ticket. The album is the much anticipated follow-up to last year’s well received Wicked, and it doesn’t disappoint.

Sometimes, when music is described as “vintage” so-and-so, there is a connotation of being staid, perhaps even stale. The 24th Street Wailers aren’t having any of that. Their animated offerings are always a good time, full of spunk and passion. This outing features 10 tracks written by drummer and vocalist Lindsay Beaver, plus three covers. Like their previous album, Where Evil Grows is produced and engineered by Billy Horton at his Fort Horton Studios in Wyldwood, Texas. As with all their albums, the mix and sound are excellent. The band is made up of Canadian and American members including new guitarist, St. Louis native Elliot Sowell, who fills the vacancy left by Emily Burgess’ departure last year.

Beaver’s vocals, a delightfully robust cross between Brenda Lee and Etta James, are wonderfully strong, nuanced, and convincing. The band is tight, and they continue to draw us in with their joy and enthusiasm. Standout tracks on Where Evil Grows include the rocker “Cursed,” and “Just Wait,” which features sweet tenor sax soloing by Jon Wong. Pianist Jessie Whiteley, and Wong, both lay down fine solo work on “All I Think of Is You,” and a simply killer version of “I Found A Love” definitely takes one back in time. Mike Archer’s bass work is spot on throughout, and the band really gels as a unit.

If you enjoy your “vintage,” or if you prefer, “retro” jump blues, with some kick instead of a lame imitation, this album is for you. /Barry Kerzner, American Blues Scene

Personnel: Lindsay Beaver (vocals, drums, percussion); Elliot Sowell (guitar); Michael Archer (bass, backing vocals); Jesse Whiteley (piano, backing vocals); Jon Wong (tenor saxophone); Billy Horton (vibraphone).

Nick Earle is quickly becoming one of the most electrifying names in Canadian rock. Hailing from St. John’s, Newfoundland, Earle has spent over a decade honing his craft on stages across North America, first as one half of the award-winning blues duo Earle & Coffin, before shifting gears into something bigger, louder, and unmistakably his own. Between the two acts he has earned 21 MusicNL awards and 2 Canadian Folk Music Awards.

Now leading Nick Earle & The Reckless Hearts, he’s bringing a fresh surge of energy to rock ‘n’ roll; balancing sharp songwriting with show-stopping guitar work that’s as technical as it is explosive. Their live show is a high-octane, no-apologies blast of guitars, sweat, and swagger - earning them spots alongside the likes of Nickelback, Matt Mays, The Trews, and Third Eye Blind.

Nick Earle & The Reckless Hearts are channeling something raw, real, and recklessly alive - bringing East Coast Rock to the masses, one hook at a time. Now signed to 745 Music Management (founded by Jay Emmons of The Glorious Sons), Earle is leveling up with a national spotlight, including a slot opening for ZZ Top at the 2025 Iceberg Alley Festival.

Whether it’s a smoky bar room stage or a summer festival crow, Nick Earle is channeling something raw, real, and recklessly alive - bringing East Coast Rock to the masses, one hook at a time.

JUNO-nominated and Maple Blues Award winning Canadian artist Miss Emily returns with her new album The Medicine. The album is produced by Grammy winner Colin Linden (Keb’ Mo’, Bob Dylan, Lucinda Williams, Gregg Allman, Diana Krall), and is accompanied by the release of the focus track and title song “The Medicine.” The title track is an empathetic plea to understand one of the most complex issues of our time. Written after a family member of an overdose victim reached out to Emily, the song represents the victims and families affected by overdose, offering compassion and solidarity through music.

The new album blends soul, blues, and roots with an all-star line-up of musicians including players from Bob Dylan and Keb’ Mo’s bands. Pairing her thunderous voice with songs of truth and resilience, Miss Emily channels over two decades of raw experience into music that heals and uplifts. Miss Emily’s powerful voice has long been her signature. She is unpredictable, unfiltered, and devoted to her community. For more than 20 years, she has turned her personal struggles into an open invitation for others to connect, share, and heal through music. Whether confronting domestic violence or life as a single mother and working musician, she has always met adversity with honesty and hope.

The Medicine is just that – a collection of soulful, Americana-inspired blues recorded in Nashville with producer Colin Linden and a hand-picked team of musicians. The record features Linden on slide and electric guitar, Keb’ Mo’s keyboardist Michael Hicks on Hammond B3, and George Receli, whose twenty-year run as Bob Dylan’s drummer made him a favourite of Keith Richards. /Blues Matters

Al Walker aka Wailin Walker is a singer-songwriter-guitarist from Vancouver, British Columbia whose music borrows from the sounds of 50s and 60s rock with a dash of blues thrown into the mix. He most definitely knows his way around his guitar as he offers employs various tones, as well as wearing his influences on his sleeve. Mister Walker is also in possession of an effective nicely rough-hewn voice. The two bass players occasionally contribute lead vocals as well. The remainder of the band-drums, keyboards and horns are up to the task. As no liner notes are supplied, all songs appear to be written by Walker’s own hand.

He surely has an affinity for early rockers like Little Richard and Chuck Berry, but by infusing their sound into his, not by imitation. The Richard vibe makes an appearance in “She Can Rock” with its’ musical structure very similar to “Good Golly Miss Molly” and “Long Tall Sally”. His pleasing voice is used to good effect along with his blazing guitar. Chuck Berry’s ghost rear its’ head on “All Fired Up”.

His admiration for early 60s guitar instrumentals come in to play as well. The Ventures tone is put to good use on the instrumental “Freedom Rock” with its’ “Secret Agent Vibe”. Link Wray spars with Jerry Cook’s wailin'(no pun intended) sax on “Mambo Wray”. The Ventures meet blues-rock on the exuberant “Devil’s Ride”.

“Cherry Red” is a hard arena rock rocker with brief uncredited harmonica. “Tired Of Begging” is a bit tamer rocker featuring slide guitar and boogie-woogie piano. They show more versatility by doing the 50s-ish rocker “Hold Me Baby”. They rockabilly it up on the authentic sounding “The Stuff I Use”. These guys can really do it all, witness the charging boogie blues-rock of “Smarten Up”. The slow blues-rock guitar instrumental “Napkins Noir” conjures up some of the great smoldering classics of the seventies. The simmering guitar rides atop an organ cushion.

Their influences help them create something refreshingly new. Al is very much a guitar wiz as he masters many styles. Al and the other two vocalists are on the mark, but unfortunately there are no liner notes to tell who is doing what, but it is all good. If you like music that is well played you have come to the right place. /Greg "Bluesdog" Szalony, Blues Blast Magazine

Merryweather was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and began his career in Toronto during the early 1960s, performing under the name Bobby Neilson.

Nikki Wozzo, & The Bad Whiskey - Bad Whiskey

Size: 171 MB
Time: 27:21
File: Flac
Released: 2021
Styles: Rock & Blues
Art: Front

1. Wild Rose (3:51)
2. Bad Whiskey (4:00)
3. Lovers Song (3:51)
4. Ain't She Something (3:33)
5. Old Man (5:14)
6. Rowdy (3:58)
7. All Night Long (2:51)

I think my favorite song on the album is probably the upbeat, rock ‘n roll tune, “Rowdy.” It has that authentic, dirty rock ‘n roll grit. His voice even has this rawness to it in the track and I can only imagine the energy at a live show when this song is performed live.

Wozzo has always been inspired by music. After high school, he attended the School of Audio Production & Recording Arts (APRA) in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, where he focused his studies on production and recording arts in film and music. Following his secondary education, he chose to pursue professional performance and attended the sister school of Berklee School of Music, Selkirk College in Nelson, BC, Canada.

Following Selkirk, Wozzo traveled overseas to the United Kingdom to join the British heavy metal band, Serpents Kiss, from Middlesbrough, England, as their lead vocalist. Although Wozzo had been working in his dream industry, he felt he needed more than just music in Canada and the U.K., so he applied to Musician’s Institute in Hollywood, California, to expand his knowledge production, music, business, as well as studying to become a touring performer.

Since 2019, Wozzo has been living in California and working as a Stage Manager/Production Assistant at the world-famous Whisky-A-Go-Go.

Nikki Wozzo & the Bad Whiskey are Nikki Wozzo (lead vocals/guitar/harmonica/keys); Ray Miller (bass/backup vocals); Mike Mallais (drums – “On,” “Lovers Song,” “Ain’t She Something,” “My Old Man,” “All Night Long,” “Music Row,” “Mom and Dad,” and “Hungover”); and Blair Shotts (drums – (“On,” “Bad Whiskey,” “Wild Rose,” and “Rowdy.”)
