Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys/Trio - 2 albums: Turntable Matinee / Fly right With...

"Twenty-five years, hundreds of thousands of miles, and over 3,000 live performances; what a dream it's been!" said Robert "Big Sandy" Williams. "When I first got together for a garage rehearsal with a group of musician friends in the spring of 1988 in Anaheim, California, I never imagined that I would someday be celebrating the silver anniversary of the rocking little band that formed that afternoon".

Since forming 25 years ago, Big Sandy and his Fly-Rite Boys have toured continuously and become torchbearers of American roots music. As a singer, songwriter, bandleader, and entertainer, Big Sandy has few contemporaries. With the release of What a Dream It's Been, Big Sandy is at once acknowledging and celebrating the successes of the past 25 years, while setting the stage for further exploration and interpretation of the musical forms he is most passionate about.

Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys - 2 albums: Night Tide / Jumping From Six To Six

"Twenty-five years, hundreds of thousands of miles, and over 3,000 live performances; what a dream it's been!" said Robert "Big Sandy" Williams. "When I first got together for a garage rehearsal with a group of musician friends in the spring of 1988 in Anaheim, California, I never imagined that I would someday be celebrating the silver anniversary of the rocking little band that formed that afternoon" Indeed, Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys are beloved by many, with fourteen albums of undiluted joyful music pulled from rockabilly, rock & roll, honky-tonk, rhythm & blues, soul and doo-wop. What A Dream It's Been, out August 27 on Cow Island Music, is a collection of the band's favorite original numbers - all acoustic, reinterpreted with fresh new arrangements, rhythms, and instrumentation.

Despite Big Sandy's uncertainty about the band's future at that time, a new generation of Fly-Rite Boys emerged. Performing on these recordings are Jeff West on bass and harmony vocals, Joe Perez on drums and backup vocals, and Ashley Kingman, a 20-year Fly-Rite veteran, on guitar and mandolin.

Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys have added a stronger dose of rockabilly rhythm to a few cuts on their seventh album, It's Time!, but otherwise they haven't changed much -- and there's nothing wrong with that. Big Sandy and company have earned a richly deserved reputation as one of the best retro-country acts on the current scene, and It's Time! boasts 14 more examples of what makes them so much fun. Big Sandy has a big, warm voice that's well suited to vintage styles without ever sounding as if he's mired in the past, and his band understands that a light hand (which guitarist Ashley Kingman and pedal steel man Jimmy Roy have along with chops to spare) is what makes vintage country swing. And It's Time! gives the band a healthy variety of material to play with, including the Cajun-flavored "Bayou Blue," the jazzy "Money Tree," the rockin' "Chalk It Up to the Blues," and the swing-centric title cut, while the live-in-the-studio production by Joey Altruda captures the roomy but dynamic sound of a good live gig. In short, if you dig Big Sandy, It's Time! will chart high on your personal play list, and if you're not familiar with their uptown twang, this is a pretty good place to get started. ~Mark Deming

Big Sandy and his Fly-Rite Boys get tagged as “retro” and it’s true, but their expressed love for musical history marks them as not a gimmick, but formalists interested in a handful of very specific musical styles – early rock n’ roll, R&B, rockabilly and western swing. To mark their 25th anniversary playing music from this general field, they’ve decided against compiling their ‘hits’. Instead, on What a Dream It’s Been they’re revisiting and trying to revitalize songs from their whole career, from their 1990 debut album Fly Right With Big Sandy and the Fly-Rite Trio to 2006’s Turntable Matinee.

It’s a mainly acoustic album, which surprisingly at times make it sound a bit thin compared to their past studio albums. The oldest songs here are the ones best served by the new versions. In some cases the songs sound truly reborn, as with “Missouri Gal”, from their debut – this time quite hard-driving for the acoustic setting – or “Glad When I’m Gone” from 1992’s On the Go, their second album.

Overall, the band’s approach to these songs is a bit frivolous, or at least purposely light-handed. Still, the album is a nonetheless a fine overview of their material – generally, sad songs with an overt party atmosphere. That, in a sense, is a good description of popular music period, which makes them less a niche act than one with a good understanding of the bigger picture. ~Dave Heaton
