It had always been a dream of the Bluescats to bring them all together: Brenda Boykin, Tommie Harris, Ralf Grottian, and saxophonist Bernd Winterschladen. Together with organist Dirk Schaadt, with whom Jens Filser plays in his Organic Blues project, they wanted to return to the origins of the blues. This led to the idea of recording a CD consisting exclusively of Willie Dixon's compositions.

Willie Dixon decisively shaped the development of the blues in the 1950s and 60s. He was not only the house bassist at Chess Records in Chicago but also a veritable song factory for the artists signed to the label, such as Muddy Waters and Sonny Boy Williamson, to name just a few. However, it was bands like the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and Eric Clapton who truly made his songs famous in the 1960s and 70s.

The Bluescats belong to the generation that thought "Bring It On Home" was a Led Zeppelin song, Jim Morrison was the Backdoor Man, and Mick Jagger was the Little Red Rooster. It took them a while to get to the roots and explore Willie Dixon and the many other blues greats of his generation. Brenda and Tommie inspired them in this search and shared their experience with them. The CD was recorded in a single day at Rockcity Studio in Solingen. The song selection, the arrangements – everything happened spontaneously, guided by a single principle: the sheer joy of playing the blues together.

Personnel: Brenda Boykin, Tommie Harris (vocals); Jens Filser (vocals, guitar); Till Brandt (bass); Bernd Oppel (drums); Ralf Grottian (harmonica); Bernd Winterschladen (saxophone); Dirk Schaadt (organ).

An inhospitable weekend in January 2019. Tommie Harris and the Bluescats meet for the first time. Within a rehearsal day, the Bluesman from Alabama and the band from the Rhineland are developing a program with which they will give a concert the following evening: Live in Haus Eifgen, Wermelskirchen.

"Ride with Mule 5" brings together 12 songs of this outstanding Blues encounter. Including blues classics, which Tommie has heard as a little boy in the Juke joints of the American South, as well as newer original compositions that his "funky state of mind" account.

One of the highlights is the title track of the CD: a homage to Tommie Harris, who Till Brandt composed especially for the concert: If the Blues hits your life, ride mule 5!

For more than 30 years, we are performing with our friend TOMMIE HARRIS, who just celebrated his 80th birthday.
In his long career as a musician, he wrote about 150 songs - for the present CD we hand-picked our favorites and recorded them; pianist Dave Ruosch arranged the music and played on most of these; additionally, we dug deep in our archives and added a few live recordings from the past years.
Our band R&B Caravan has been touring Europe for almost 20 years, and there is heavy contribution from all the members and guests to the tight sounds of our combo: pianists Dave Ruosch and Andi Sobczyk, saxphonist Tom Müller, guitarists Kai Strauss and Dave Blenkhorn, and the band founding rhythm section of Peter Müller and Dani Gugolz.
